CAN A

MONKEY AND

CROCODILE BE FRIENDS?

FOLKTALE Panchatantra:

The Monkey and the Crocodile

Once upon a time, on the banks of a mighty river, there was a monkey, who lived on a magnificent tree. The tree bore fruits as sweet as nectar, and the monkey lived a happy, and content life. Once, a hungry crocodile swam up to the bank of the river. “Hello! Try out these fruits!“ called out the monkey, tossing the juicy fruits to the crocodile. Everyday, the crocodile would come to eat the fruits, and soon, they became great friends. But the crocodile’s wife was very greedy, and wanted to have the monkey for her supper. “I want to devour the monkey’s heart, for it will be as sweet as the fruit he eats,” schemed the wife. Next day, the gullible crocodile invited his dear friend to his house for supper. The poor monkey believed the story, and without hesitation, jumped on the crocodile’s back and off they went to the crocodile’s home on the other side of the river.

In the middle of the river, the crocodile began sinking deep. The frightened monkey screamed, “What are you doing?” The crocodile said, “Forgive me, my friend, but I have to kill you! My wife has heard so much about you, and now she wants to eat your juicy heart.” “Oh, silly friend,” baited the monkey. “Why didn’t you say so in the beginning itself? My heart is stored safely in the burrow of the tree.” “Really? Let’s go get it then,” said the silly crocodile, and he started swimming back to the tree. Once the crocodile reached the river bank, the terrified monkey sprang to safety, on a high branch. Once out of reach, the monkey yelled at the crocodile, “Your wife is a greedy crocodile and you a foolish one. I have only one heart and it’s beating inside me.” The crocodile was ashamed of what happened and swam back into the river, having lost a dear friend due to his foolishness.

What is the difference

between a llama and

an alpaca?

At the first glance, the two animals may look very similar - after all, they are cousins from the camelidae family. Other members of this family also include the camel! Let's start with their ears. A great way to tell llamas and alpacas apart is from the shape of their ears. Llamas have long, banana shaped ears, while alpacas have small, straight ears. Their faces are also different; as llamas have longer faces, while alpacas have smaller smushed faces. Llamas are also bigger than alpacas and can grow up to 400 pounds. An alpaca, on an average, grows only up to 175 pounds. It is for this reason, that llamas are used as pack carrying animals, as their bodies can handle the weight. Lastly, alpacas are famous for their soft fleece - which has a very fine fiber and comes in some amazing colours. In contrast, a llama's coat is quite coarse!

Alpaca my bags and we can go on vacation! I’m sorry, I just couldn’t help myself. See this handsome furry creature? It’s an alpaca! With their floppy furry tufts, doe eyes and goofy grins, they might just be the cutest of the Camelidae family. Besides their quirky good looks, these creatures also bear some of the silkiest, most versatile fibre found in nature, for which they are shorn annually. Alpaca fleece is described as being stronger than mohair, smoother than silk, finer than cashmere, and warmer, yet better-breathing than thermal knits. The alpaca originated from Peru. They were thought to be domesticated by the Indians of the Andes Mountains and live in the high mountain foot hills. Now however, they can be found in North America, South America, Australia as well as the UK. There are 2 types of Alpacas – suri and the huacaya. The suri has fiber that grows long and forms silky dreadlocks. The huacaya has a woolly, dense, crimped fleece — like a teddy bear. These gentle animals are herbivores and have 3 stomachs which help them process their food. They also have a relatively high life expectancy of about 20-25 years.

Healthy Me What are Seasonal

Allergies? When you have a reaction every time there is a change of season or pollen in the air, it could point towards you having a seasonal allergy. To understand what those are, let’s go over some of the symptoms you coud get – It could begin as tightness in the chest, followed by difficulty breathing or wheezing. More often, asthma begins in the childhood, in one form or another. More reactions happen during ‘hay fever’ season – during spring and autumn, when pollen is heavy in the air. The body reacts to the pollen and in turn causes tightening in the lungs and a difficulty in breathing. During these seasons, you may also develop rashes and itchiness on the body. Windblown pollen from trees, flowers and plants usually give you the sniffles. Mornings are an especially bad time if you have seasonal allergies as your nose runs and eyes water. Other allergens can also include dust mites (usually found hiding in home carpeting), pollution or smoke in the air, cold air, strong chemical fumes or smells and animal dander (which can include hair, skin, feathers or saliva).

einstien iyengar Water-The Super Drink!

The hot summer sun was beating down on Eeshan and his friends.

My throat feels so dry!

“Here, said Rahul. I have a cola drink.

7

Martin thanked Rahul and gulped down the bottle.

There is nothing like a cold drink in the hot summer of Allepey!

There is nothing like water!

8

What do you mean Eeshan? How can you compare a cold drink with water?

For starters, soft drinks contain caffeine, large amounts of sugar and phosphorus.

Caffeine has many harmful effects such as indigestion and insomnia.

9

Similarly, the sugar in the soft drink may give us instant energy, but its over consumption can lead to obesity.

And the phosphorus in the soft drink, depletes the calcium in our bones.

What about energy drinks or sports drinks? We can drink those instead of water?

These drinks are intended for people who exercise, because then we not only lose water, through sweating, but also a lot of essential minerals.

Water may not contain all the essential minerals but it is a better hydrating agent than sports drinks as one can absorb it easily.

Water can help control your calories Dholu, it is the only liquid on earth that helps reduce weight. And water helps to maintain the balance of fluids in our body.

11

Water improves our digestive system. Ailments like flu and cold can also be prevented with intake of water. If you are thirsty, it is our body’s way of telling us that it is already dehydrated.

Can I have a glass of water, Einstein Iyengar?

Here, take the whole bottle!

The Fir Tree

And The Thorn The lowly and contented state Is farthest from the wounds of fate. A fir tree upon a humble thorn From his high top look'd down with scorn. "For loftiest fanes we grow," she said, "Of us the tallest masts are made, While you, poor bramble, can't produce Nothing of ornament or use." "Great tree," the modest thorn replied, "When the sharp axe shall pierce your side, In vain you then may wish to be Unsought-for, and unknown like me."

My llama friend Pedro and I were off on an adventure! I just hadn't gotten round to telling my parents yet. Pedro and I had snuck out one morning, before the sun was up, loaded with fresh water and food. I had heard some travellers talking of a secret treasure high up in the mountains. To know or not to know, that is the question! Well, wouldn’t you prefer to know?

Fun Facts about Llamas Llamas are the camel’s cousins belonging to a group of animals called camelids. All camelids spit or stick out their tongues when they are annoyed. One of the ways llamas communicate is by humming. During the last ice age (10,000-12,000 years ago) camelids went extinct in North America. Llamas were first domesticated and used as pack animals 4,000 to 5,000 years ago in the Peruvian highlands. 13
