FACTS ABOUT HEDGEHOGS

FOLKTALE

Long ago, there lived a cunning blue jackal. One day, driven by hunger, he strayed into a village in search of food. On seeing him, a group of dogs ran after him. Terrified, he dashed into the house of a dyer and accidentally fell into a tub of blue dye. The jackal was stained blue from head to toe. Later, when he got back to the jungle, all the animals stared at him in shock. They had never seen such a strange and beautiful animal before. Seeing everyone confused, the jackal thought of an idea. He proclaimed that he was sent to rule over the animal kingdom and guard its animals. The animals fell for it and proclaimed him king. The jackal, as king, then appointed the lion as his advisor, the tiger as his guardian, and the

elephant as his doorkeeper. But, his work was not done. For fear of being recognized, he drove all the jackals out of the forest. The new king then ordered his subjects to hunt for him and do his bidding. The animals used to bring all kinds of fruit and meat for him and the blue king lived a life of luxury. One day, as the blue king was enjoying himself, a pack of jackals passed by and began howling. Unable to control his natural instinct, the blue king rose up and howled to glory. Hearing his cry, the jungle animals realized that they had been fooled. At once, they chased the traitor out of the forest and the cunning jackal never returned again.

Discover a new place

I’m in front of the Cloud Gate, at the Millennium Park, in Chicago! Also known as the Electric Kidney Bean, the Cloud Gate has been praised as one of the most unique and interesting sculptures in decades, and it was created by sculptor Anish Kapoor. When it was first unveiled, some called it unimaginative, and that’s how it got the name “The Electric Kidney Bean”. But soon, throngs of people were drawn to it, and “The Bean” became a new symbol of Chicago. It cost $23,000,000 to make this beautiful, shiny, 33 foot high monument. The sculptor named it Cloud Gate, because 80% of its shiny surface reflects the sky. And because of the way it bulges and looms over the viewer, it offers a magically distorted view of the surroundings to them, and some even call it a magical rift in the fabric of space and time. A walk under its nine-foot-tall arch can be a mind-bending experience. 3

einstien iyengar The Science of Food

Eeshan, do you know why bananas, potatoes and apples turn brown after some time outside? I can guess they undergo some kind of reaction.

Yes. Complex chemical reactions go on in these foods all of the time – even if you’re not cooking them. They all contain an enzyme which triggers the release of ethylene when they come in contact with air.

It ripens them and turns them brown with over-ripening. That is why I wrap them in plastic sheets- so they last longer. 6

Many kinds of food can be preserved by salting them. Salt extracts the water out of the food, making it dry and deters the growth of bacteria.

All this knowledge from just watching you cook! It’s incredible, Ma! Let me make you some pancakes for breakfast. Do you know why I mix the baking powder in them?

Eeshan shook his head.

Milk is acidic in nature. You told me that baking powder contains sodium bicarbonate. The base and the acid react to give carbon dioxide. That makes the pancakes nice and fluffy. Just like this.

7

Mrs. Iyengar served Eeshan a pancake and topped it with a little honey. Your cooking is anyway great, mother. Now I get to learn every time I see you cook and you can trust that I will only give you a positive reaction!

Pondering Corner

Why do Bees Buzz?

The buzzing of bees is produced because of different reasons. The buzzing sound generally comes when bees flap their wings at a super fast speed. Sometimes, the buzzing sound is also generated by a bee’s breathing - bees breathe in air through the tiny openings on their bodies which can produce a buzzing sound. The larger the insect, the slower is the speed with which it beats its wings and the lower is the pitch of the resultant buzz. Buzzing Factors The buzzing sound depends on the size of the insects’ wings and the speed with which they flap their wings. Insects having small wings can push very little air, so they have to beat them faster while flying. The insects having larger wings do not have to take the trouble of beating their wings rapidly; they can easily push a lot of air to move ahead while flying and have almost soundless flights. It is not just the bees that buzz; some other insects like wasps, flies, mosquitoes and beetles make buzzing sounds by flapping their wings rapidly.

My father and I would walk in the park every evening, sometimes we would get an ice-cream and other times, a tasty snack. One evening, we spotted a street magician setting up for a small show. While he was unpacking, he pulled out a hedgehog from his bag. Tears filled my eyes when I saw the hedgehog being treated this way. "Papa, papa," I said, pulling on the edge of my father's shirt, "We have to save him!"

Fun Facts about Hedgehogs A hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 quills which are raised or lowered using muscles along the back. They have very poor eyesight and rely on their sense of hearing and smell. Hedgehogs get their name from two things - hedges being their preferred habitats and the little pig-like grunts they make. A group of hedgehogs is known as an 'array'.
