FOLKTALE The Fox and

the Elephant

Once upon a time, a huge elephant lived in a forest. The elephant was very arrogant and cruel. He took advantage of his size and wrecked havoc in the forest. He roamed around in the jungle breaking branches and small trees with his trunk. He did not care about the fact that in this way he destroyed the nests of many birds and killed their babies. In the same way, he ruined many foxes’ homes by trampling over them with his huge and heavy feet. All the animals of the forest were terrorised by the elephant. Even the lions and tigers tried to keep clear of him. The animals had got so fed up of the elephant and his arrogant ways that they wanted to kill him but they could not come up with any way of doing this. One day, fed up of the destruction that the elephant was causing, the foxes held a meeting among themselves. They decided that the elephant must be killed so that the other animals of the forest could live in peace. This difficult task of killing the elephant was given to a particularly clever fox. The chosen fox made a careful study of the elephant’s behaviour and daily routine. Then, after much thinking, he made a plan. He went up to the elephant one day and said, “My Lord, I want to speak to you about some urgent business.” The elephant trumpeted and asked the fox, “What is it? Who are you?” The fox replied, “Your Highness, all the animals of the forest have decided to make you our king. They have sent me to you as a messenger. I have come to escort you to the place where all the other animals are waiting for your coronation ceremony. All the

preparations are in order. We are only waiting for you to arrive and then we will crown you as our king.” The elephant was very pleased. Becoming the king of the forest had always been his dream. He readily agreed to follow the fox. The fox led the way. On the way, there was a marshy area near a pond that the fox and the elephant had to cross. The fox was light so he easily walked over the swamp. But when the elephant tried to cross the swamp, he got trapped in the marsh because of his weight. The more the elephant struggled to get out, the deeper the marsh sucked him in. The elephant began to shout, “Help! Help! I’m drowning. Pull me out. Go and call all the other animals for help, quick!” The fox, who was standing calmly at the edge of the swamp, replied, “Nobody is going to save you. This is the kind of treatment that you truly deserve. You have always been cruel to other animals and have mistreated them. You have taken advantage of your power and broken down countless birds’ nests without caring about their eggs or nestlings. You have stomped upon foxes’ burrows and crushed many foxes under your heavy feet. You knew about all the destruction and misery you were causing us but you did not care to stop. You never paid heed to our cries for mercy and so today, nobody is going to have mercy on you." The elephant cried and apologised for behaving the way he had. He promised the animals he would never misbehave again. The animals accepted his apology and helped him out of the swamp. From then on, the elephant learnt to behave well and be kind to other animals.

stories in rhyme A Big,

round Potato

A big, round potato lay down on a clod In the shade of some burdock and tall goldenrod, And he dreamed he were king of the whole garden plot, With a palace and throne, and a crown with a lot Of jewels and diamonds and gold till it shone Like the front of a show when the lights are turned on. He had to be minded by all of the plants; When he whistled the radishes knew they must dance; When he tooted his horn the cucumbers must sing To a vegetable crowd gathered round in a ring. He made all the cabbages stand in a row While a sunflower instructed them just how to grow; The bright yellow pumpkins he painted light blue; Took the clothes off the scare-crow and made him buy new. He strutted and sputtered and thought it was grand To be king and commander o’er all the wide land. But at last he woke up with an awful surprise And found a blind mole kicking sand in his eyes.

Sam Visits the Maldives

The Maldives are magical in a true sense of the word. I am standing on a seashore in the Maldives and as you can see, under my paws, the whole sea shore is lit-up in twilight blue. This is no illusion! I’m standing on water that glows! In fact, this is a rather normal occurrence. This effect is created by microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton, or dinoflagellates. These tiny organisms emit light and glow when they are stressed, which happens when they are moved around by waves. When stressed, they produce a chemical called luciferin, which causes them to emit “cold light” i.e. less than 20% of the light generates heat. The effect is gorgeous, to say the least. The beautiful night sky, and clean, white sand beaches that look like a field of stars on earth are truly a sight to behold. It’s ironic that what causes them stress is actually a stress reliever for us. You guys just have to come here to check this out!

AMUSING NEWS

Koala Surprise

A family of three returned to their car after a shopping trip and were startled to find a koala bear relaxing in the airconditioned car. They had left their AC on for the dog who was waiting in the car while they bought groceries. Unsure of how the koala got in, it took them a while to convince him to leave.

einstien iyengar Jellyfish Stings

One summer day, Martin’s father promised Eeshan and his friends that he would drop them at the beach. He also told them that he would make Chinese for dinner. They stopped at a grocery store and bought the ingredients. Then, Martin’s father dropped them off.

Nitin kept urging everyone to go deeper into the sea. Eeshan tried to change his friend’s mind. Nitin didn’t listen to Eeshan’s warning and went ahead. After a while, he came running out of the sea water, screaming in pain.

We have this grocery bag to take care of. 6

Eeshan noticed tentacles and sting on his friend’s feet. They realised he had been stung by a jelly fish. Eeshan quickly took out the towel they were carrying from his bag. He carefully removed the tentacles after putting some beach sand on it. Oh my god! What are we going to do?

I am remembering the class we had on underwater science. We have to remove the poisonous tentacles before it makes the pain worse. It hurts a lot!

What are you doing?

Eeshan frantically ran towards the grocery bag and took out the vinegar bottle, an important ingredient in Chinese food. He poured the liquid on the sting. The pain subsided a bit. Martin’s father was on his way to pick them up. They took Nitin to the hospital where the doctors praised Eeshan’s presence of mind.

The acetic acid in vinegar neutralises the sting.

That was some quick thinking, Eeshan.

Too bad we can’t reward your timely action with a Chinese dinner, though. We’re out of vinegar, Eeshan!

As always!

You really did save me, Eeshan.

The words flora and fauna are used by the scientists to describe the plant and animal life in a region or area. The word ‘flora’ comes from the Latin word ‘flora’ who was believed to be the princess of flowers. Flora is a collective noun used to describe all the plants, trees, fungi and bacteria that may be present in a particular region. Fauna comes from two Greek words ‘faunus’, the

name of a Roman god and ‘fauna’, the name of a mythical Roman goddess. It is a collective noun that is used to describe all the animal life in a particular region. The flora and fauna present in the different corners of the Earth have made life possible on this planet. Both plants, as well as animals, help in maintaining the delicate ecological balance on Earth. The flora produces the oxygen which is taken in by the fauna. In turn, the fauna releases the carbon dioxide that the flora needs to live. So, one cannot live without the other, and we, humans, cannot live without either. The existence of one species depends upon the existence of the other. For example – Pandas eat only bamboo shoots. The destruction of the bamboo forests in China has driven Pandas on the brink of extinction due to food shortage and habitat loss.

I walked into my house one evening, after a long day at work. My arms were loaded with groceries and I could hear my dog barking loudy in the back garden. I set my groceries down and went to take a look. I was startled to find a koala bear lounging in the pond in the back!
