FOLKTALE Panchatantra: The
Donkey, Cat and Dog
Once, there lived a donkey who worked for a washer man. He was well fed and worked hard. The washer man used to feed the donkey well. The donkey also worked very hard for his master. But as time passed, the donkey grew old and was no longer able to work as hard as before. The cruel washer man stopped feeding the donkey. He felt miserable and decided to go to Calcutta to become a musician. On his way, he met an old dog that was crying uncontrollably. The donkey asked him, “What is the matter, my dear friend? Why are you crying?” The poor dog replied, “My master used to love me very much till the time I was young and alert enough to guard his house. But now age has caught up with me and I am not able to catch the thieves. So, my cruel master has thrown me out of the house.” The donkey replied, “The same thing happened to me. So I have decided to go to Calcutta to become a musician. Why don’t you join me?” The dog agreed to accompany the donkey and together they set out for Calcutta. On their way, they both met an unhappy cat. The dog and the donkey asked him, “Why are you sad?” The cat replied, “My master brought me to this house when I was very young. I could catch a lot of rats every day and my master gave
me lot of milk to drink. But now I have become old and cannot catch rats anymore. So my master has turned me out of the house. I am sad because of that.” The donkey and dog were very sorry to hear the cat’s story. They asked her to join them. The cat thought it was a very good idea and then the donkey, dog and the cat started walking towards Calcutta. By the evening, the friends got very tired of walking. They were feeling very hungry. They saw a light was coming from a big house. They found out that the house belonged to three robbers and they had a lot of food stacked up in the house. The four friends were starving by now, so they spoke to each other and made a plan. The donkey stood with his legs on the window. The dog stood on him and the cat stood on the dog. All of them started singing at the same time. The robbers who were inside mistook the animals for a strange looking ghost and ran away. The donkey, the dog and the cat went inside and ate to their heart’s content. They lived happily in that house and gave up the idea of going to Calcutta. At night, all of them used to practice music.

Stories in Rhyme
Old Father Time, one day In his study, so they say, Was indulging in a surreptitious nap, When from his drowsy dreams He was wakened, as it seems, By a timid but persistent little rap. He yawned and rubbed his eyes In indolent surprise, Then slowly he arose from where he sat; He opened wide his door, And nearly tumbled o’er The figure that stood waiting on the mat. A tiny little dog, With excitement all agog, And angry eyes that seemed to flash and glower.
A Valuable Gift His manner was polite, But he said, “I claim my right! And I’ve called, sir, to demand of you my hour.” “Your what?” the old man said, As he shook his puzzled head; And the pertinacious puppy spoke with force: “Well, sir, they often say, ‘Every dog must have his day,’ So a puppy ought to have an hour, of course!” The old man shook with glee, But he said obligingly, “The dog days are all gone, I grieve to say; But since you’ve come so far, And so mannerly you are, I’ll give you just an hour—to get away."

Who invented the automobile?
The history of the automobile is a rich and complicated one. To begin with, to simplify matters, we will be looking at the invention of a gasoline based automobile - which evolved into the cars we know today. There were many other types of automobiles as well - those powered by steam, simple hand-carts and electric ones too. They alone have too large a history to try and explain together. It is generally decided that the first practical automobile (which was run on gasoline) was created by several German inventors almost around the same time. The first of them was

Karl Benz, who was granted a patent for his automobile in 1886. They were horse-drawn carriages with an engine attached. He began production of these automobiles in 1888. Inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach followed in 1889 by building the first automobile from scratch, rather than the carriage with an engine attached. The first company formed exclusively to build automobiles was Panhard et Levassor in France, in the year 1889. It was followed by Peugeot two years later. By the beginning of the 20th century, production of automobiles expanded to Western Europe as well.
Generations ago, dogs were opportunistic scavengers who would eat anything that would satisfy their diet needs. Today, grass is the only available Grass? option. They eat grass for many reasons. To begin with, grass is chewy and tasty. Your dog gets the fiber or roughage that was missing from its food. Fiber gives energy to the cells inside your dog’s intestine and allows for proper functioning of the digestive system. Your dog could be lacking exercise and is jaded so it thinks chewing grass is similar to chewing a toy. If your dog is having stomach problems like bloating, she will eat grass. Less than one in four dogs vomit after eating grass, so don’t be worried. Only if your dog gulps down the grass, the prickly grass blade irritates the stomach, called gastric irritability. This causes your dog to vomit out whatever the stomach does not like – in this case, grass. However, check if your dog has redness on her lower esophagus, or pulls out her neck to swallow the grass; as then it could mean some serious illness.

Pros of Keeping a Dog at Home
The decision to bring a dog into your home should not be taken lightly – regardless of which kind of breed it is. It should be seen as a family responsibility, rather than heaping the duties upon one person. At a time when an increasing number of dogs are being abandoned by their owners, have a good think before you choose to adopt one. Playing with a dog is a natural stress-buster. Research has shown the positive effects that come with having a dog at home. When you're feeling stressed or worked up by something that has happened in school, a dog is a soothing companion that takes your mind off what has happened. Keeping a dog at home also makes sure you step outside more – be it to play or to take them for a walk. Having the responsibility of walking the dog also helps you understand the role they play as a part of the family. It will teach you to follow a routine and the responsibility that comes with caring for another being. Lastly, caring for a dog helps develop nurturing skills, teaching you to think about others as well. Being in charge of a dog also pushes you to be nurturing and caring, building a sense of empathy in you. Spending time with dogs also boosts your immunity, making you less prone to allergies and infections.

Akbar Birbal
Birbal Goes to Heaven Emperor Akbar was very fond of Birbal and would favour him a lot. This made the other courtiers jealous of Birbal. They would keep plotting for Birbal’s downfall, but would hardly succeed.
One such vicious plan was hatched against Birbal by the Emperor's jealous barber.
Sir, last night I dreamt about your father.
Really? What did he say to you?
Sir, he said that he was extremely happy in the paradise, but sometimes he feels a great absence of a quick witted man who can amuse him. On seeing the Emperor caught in a dilemma as to whom to send, he suggested Birbal's name. Akbar whole heartedly agreed with the barber.
The next day... Birbal, I firmly believe that you are extremely loyal to me and can sacrifice anything for me. Am I right?
Yes Jahanpanah! That is absolutely right.
Then Birbal, please go to the heaven to give company to my dear father.
Birbal did not take time to understand that this was another diabolical plan of somebody to get him killed. I will do so, but I need a few days to prepare myself to go to the heaven.
Yes, sure! I grant you one week to prepare yourself to go to the heaven.

Birbal went back to his home and started to think of a suitable plan to save his life and then, a nice idea struck him. He dug a ditch near his house which would serve as his grave, and thorough that ditch, dug a tunnel that opened in one of the rooms of his house.
Once everything was done, he reported back to the court... I am ready, His Majesty, but there two conditions.
Yes Birbal, it would be my pleasure to fulfill your last wishes. Tell me, what are your conditions?
Akbar readily agreed upon Birbal’s conditions. All the jealous courtiers and the barber were elated to know that soon they will get rid of Birbal.

So, a date was chosen and Birbal was buried alive near his house. After the burial, Birbal made his way to his house and lived there in confinement for six months. Meanwhile, he also came to know that the Emperor’s barber had masterminded the plan of getting him killed. After six months, he came out of hiding with a grown beard and shabby hair and presented himself before the Emperor.
Birbal, you are back! How is my father? Did he send you back or is there something else?
Your Majesty, all is well in the heaven. I was there with your dear father. He was so happy with my services that he gave me special permission to return to earth to entertain his favourite son.
Yes Your Majesty, there is not even a single Did he barber in the heaven. You send any can easily make this out message by looking at my grown for me? beard and shabby hair. So, he has asked to send your own barber to him immediately. Akbar understood everything. He handsomely rewarded Birbal and sentenced his barber to life imprisonment.

The day had finally arrived! My parents were taking me to the dog shelter to choose a dog for us to adopt. When we got to the shelter, there were so many dogs and puppies, I couldn't choose one. Just as I had begun to feel overwhelmed, I felt a wet little nose touch my ankle. It was a little brown and white dog!
