FOLKTALE Panchatantra: Two Fish and a Frog

no need of unnecessarily getting panicked.” Satabuddhi said, “You are a genius, Sahsrabuddhi! What you say is correct. There is nothing that accomplished men cannot conquer. Even the great Chanakya had single handedly killed the entire army of Nandas.” Then, Ekabuddhi, the frog, said, “Friends, I am not as learned or brave as you are. The only thing I know is to leave the place where there is an impending danger. So, I and my wife will leave this place tonight itself.” Accordingly, the frog left the lake immediately. Next day, the fishermen arrived early in the morning near the lake. They cast their net and caught a lot of fish, frogs, crabs, turtles etc. Satabuddhi and Sahasrabuddhi were also caught and killed by the fishermen. Ekbuddhi, who was watching all this from the distance mourned over the death of his foolish and overconfident friends.

Along time ago, two fish named Sahasrabuddhi and Satabuddhi used to live in a lake. They were friends with a frog whose name was Ekbuddhi. One day, as the three friends were having a good time together, they saw some fishermen near the lake. They were taking amongst themselves about coming to that lake the next day with their nets and catching the fish. The frog was very disturbed to hear the conversation of the fishermen. Ekbuddhi, the frog asked Sahsrabudhhi, “Dear friend, you just heard about the fishermen’s plan. Now, what should we do? Should we remain in the lake or go somewhere else?” Sahsrabuddhi replied, “Dear Ekbuddhi, you should not be scared by just words. The learned have said: ‘The world is still safe because the dreams of snakes and wicked men never come true’. The fishermen may not even come tomorrow! Even if they do, we will think of something to save you and ourselves. There is 1

The Fly

How large unto the tiny fly Must little things appear!— A rosebud like a feather bed, Its prickle like a spear; A dewdrop like a looking-glass, A hair like golden wire; The smallest grain of mustard-seed As fierce as coals of fire; A loaf of bread, a lofty hill; A wasp, a cruel leopard; And specks of salt as bright to see As lambkins to a shepherd.

Sam Visits Dubai's Miracle Garden

Discover a new place

I’m in a garden with around 100 million flowers!! I’m at the Miracle Garden in Dubai, and I have never seen so many flowers in one place!! Located next to Dubai Land in Al Bashra, the garden is spread over 72000 sq.mt and is the largest flower garden in the world. I cannot decide what I like more – the blooming pyramids and igloos, the floral heart archways, or the archways with a ceiling of colorful umbrellas! It’s like an exhibition of glorious botanical art. There are more than 70 varieties flowers here, most of them rare, and new to the Middle East. The garden was built by Al-Ain based Akar Landscaping and Agriculture Company as an outdoor attraction for residents and tourists alike. This place is a major crowd puller, around 30,000 on weekends! This garden is also known for its kilometer long flower wall. I haven’t even mentioned the butterfly garden yet. Would you believe it? Domes full of live, colorful fluttering butterflies! Need I say more? The most interesting thing about this garden isn’t the amazing display of flowers though. One would expect a place such as this to consume water and energy on a massive scale. Although by no means a minimal consumer of water and energy, the attraction has a sub-surface irrigation system that recycles waste water via drip irrigation while avoiding evaporation and saving up to 75% of water and energy!

Akbar Birbal

Back to Square One An astrologer was flaunting his knowledge of the solar system and the earth’s shape. You say that the earth is round in shape, so if one travels in a straight line, then he will come back to the same spot from where he started the journey. Isn’t it?

Yes, theoretically, it is correct Alampanah!

Because one will have to cross vast oceans, high mountains and dense forests to keep the path straight. 6

Why not in real life?

Well, that can be taken care of! Sail through the oceans, make tunnels in the mountains and use elephants to cross the forests.

No sir, still it is not possible.

It will take many years to complete the whole journey.

Why?

How many years, tell me?

I cannot calculate that! May be a hundred years or more.

Don’t worry about that. I will ask my courtiers. They have an answer for everything.

Impossible to calculate!

Around 25 years!

1000 days! Fifty years or less.

Birbal, I did not expect you to be so silent. Do you have no answer for this question?

Everybody said something or the other but Birbal kept quiet.

I was just calculating the time required to go round the earth.

Yes, I did! It will take just one day. And did you get the answer?

Just one day! Birbal, it is impossible! I wonder how you even came up with that answer. In one day, we will not be able to cross the territories of our own kingdom.

It is possible, Alampanah! Provided you travel at the speed of the sun!

Complete the Story...

Sigmund was a very lazy sloth. He spent his days lounging on the branches of a massive tree that was always cool, quiet and shaded. When it came time to look for some food, Sigmund would slooooowly rise and move around. He rarely got hungry, so it didn't matter to him if he took his time. One afternoon, as Sigmund was lounging, he heard a branch snap. He turned his head to see a very large and very hungry snake staring at him...
