Jiadong Qiang
I am a diploma fourth year student of Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA). Based on personal practical experience working on old city quarter renovation in China and architectural education sensibility in northern industrial city of Liverpool, I developed an interest in the archi¬tectural typologies especially for idiosyncratic British industrial form, deindustrialised landform/ landscape and post-war public housing ideology.

In terms of my architectural design process, pursuing my particular interest in the representation of art and architecture, I have established my own approach of architectural hand drawing and handmade model, it strives to investigate specific architectural, landscape, art, environmental and geographical theory/ type which subsequently forms a unique design process and an alternative architectural response. Project 2- New Cantina Valpolicella Negrar, Verona, Italy, 2014 This competition project is regarded as an experimental research rather than an opportunistic approach for award winning. The Cantina Valpolicella Negrar was once a complicated architectural and production composition which extended continuously without a mature articulation in terms of the whole building complex. However, this economic and functional based complex obtained the rural Italian ordinariness and vernacular follies that should be specified. It is an ordinary building complex which needs an alternative way of regeneration, which shall not be contextualism, opportunism and determinism. As a result of particular research, during the two extreme way of investigation, from general mass and circulation reform to delicate detailed architectural unit as “pole” and “beam”. An undetermined gradual abstraction of the whole complex appeared. In particular, the specific energetic geometry, simple line and the undefined plane made the whole scheme as an elevational investigation, which was given conviction for a strong compromise between the functional-opportunism architecture and art based abstract painting theory. Referred to Nasreen Mohamedi, is there an architectural form leads to constant reflection of limitation, contemplation and indeterminism? The Cantina Valpolicella Negrar is a demonstration of abstract form containing specific compositional, limitation theory and the innate ordinariness.

Project 3- Design for Life: Terrace Housing for Egerton Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, UK, 2014
The final degree project demanded an utmost specific redefinition and reinterpretation of terrace housing and should show a range of theories supporting the particular housing project. The project started with specific field investigation and abstract spatial experimentation in terms of particular character. The site for housing is regarded as a both physical and psychological boundary of northern residential area and Toxteth in Liverpool, the whole design approach intended to create particular urban model which fulfils the active event, flexibility structure and the specific compromise as well as juxtaposition between the “mundane” generic housing unit and event space waiting to be charged. The Upper Parliament street retained Georgian terrace facade is established to introduce varied events which refer to Cedric Price’s Fun Palace theory, the back “generic” housing tends to create as-found phenomenon in terms of external expression but the reconstruction and reinterpretation of spatial experience inside which corresponds to four different prototypes. Consequently, the follies experimentation with traditional English landscape as layers juxtaposed with front retained terrace skin and back housing unit, the integrated urban model shall demonstrate an alternative housing, social and cultural solution to British northern terrace housing regeneration programme.
Egerton transcript: spatial experience study, as found element study, movement study, urban reinterpretation. The astract record based on generic sketch and existing housing study intends to introduce urban related social/ cultural solution instead of simple housing design.
Type 3 housing is designed to hold the traditional English interior characters which refers to John Soane’s method of classical geometric shapes, harmony, richness and bit retrospective.
Type 4 is a vertical reshape of original back-to-back housing, heavy weight steel joist and steel staircase, suspended cantilever, Mies’s simplicity furniture and interior design method are incorporated.
Type 2 housing is designed for young family and professionals, the interior structure and design tend to be more artistic and unique, therefore, Mackintosh’s approach employing timber grid, decoration, natural shape and organic way of furniture is implemented.
Type 1 housing is designed for student, the interior structure and design tend to be more modern and energetic.
Aerial view of sectional model
This order of conglomeration is naturally formed during the process of the back-toback housing reinvention, the central party wall with service structure and system are emphasized. in terms of the height difference, the sunken gardens designed with more natural and organic shape fit the landscape. According to townscape concept, projection, set back, picturesque ideas are incoporated into this architectural composition.
Upper parliament street retained facade as connection/media transitional skin presents buffer zone and multifple functional fun area (Fun Palace)
North view of model
Sectional study is supposed to interpret the relation between space and landscape, height difference and frontage treatment. The double frontage draws a particular balance and compromise between the existing student accommodation on the north and the middle landscape.

Project 3 - St. James' Wedding Chapel: Made of Stone, Liverpool, UK, 2013
Model aerial view from south west
Made of stone: bricolage
The site is an empty derelict plaza in front of the Oratory of St. James' gardens, which could be regarded as a unique buffer zone to Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. The brief required specific starting point from materiality, and the Woolton Quarry sandstone as the principle material was selected. The whole design process begins from intuitive response of the site which particularly relating to stone materiality and then the rational stone texture investigation and several contemporary stone structure research.
According to the primary material research, the design scheme is therefore created due to the unique context of the whole site. Five principle stone elements (wedding chapel, circulation core, courtyard, amphitheatre and portico) were composited architecturally, which particularly in response to the typological effect of the whole site.
The whole design scheme could be addressed as a modern ruin with romantic stone elements composition and changing landscape. During 4 periods of time, the stone elements as human artefacts are unconsciously dissolved with vegetation. The ceremonial and symbolic space is formed and simultaneously introduces a natural extension of original St. James' Gardens.

Project 15- Falkner Square Garden, Liverpool, UK, 2012
It was asked to design a standard linear pavilion with multi-functions in the middle of Falkner Square, which is on the edge of Liverpool city, Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust is on the south of site. It can be indicated that the current situation is too private and enclosed with completely flatten space, therefore, employing different heights to the square view and creating the space with process from public to private are driving forces of the design. On the other hand, the colour experimentation was incorporated into the design, which deconstructs the existing elements and surroundings, it demonstrated the significant comparison between collective use and individual use.
The architectural bricolage. It expresses itself by means of a heterogeneous repertoire, which is extremely extensive and constructs unforeseen results.
