The educational system in Greece


is divided into three levels of education: •

Primary

Secondary

Higher


Primary education includes: ď Ź

a. Kindergarten: it lasts two years, from age 4 to 6 (preschool education) and

ď Ź

b. Primary: lasts six years, from the age of 6 to 12, attendance is mandatory.


Secondary education comprises two levels: 

a. Junior High school lasts three years and is mandatory.

b. High school has two basic types: 1. General Lyceum and 2. Vocational Lyceum (EPAL).

Attendance at General and Vocational Lyceum lasts three years, at the Evening Vocational Lyceum four years and is not compulsory.

There are also all-day primary schools, with extended opening hours and enriched curriculum, special schools (kindergartens, primary and high schools) and Integration Classes for pupils with special educational needs.

Moreover there are Christian, Sport & Music High Schools


Higher Education is: 

public and it is divided into:

a. Universities (AEI-Universities)

b. Technological Educational Institutes (TEI)


ď Ź

Students are admitted to these according to their performance in national examinations taken in the Third Grade of High School.


ď Ź

Furthermore there is the Hellenic Open University.
