Governor Dr. Juan F. Ortega • editorial One of the greatest privileges of being District Governor is having the opportunity to support the service of Rotary’s youngest generations: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE), and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). As a former Interactor, Rotaractor and RYLA graduate, New Generations have a very special place in my heart.
Interact is Rotary’s service club for youth ages 12-18. Interact clubs can be community-based or schoolbased. Individual Rotary clubs sponsor Interact clubs and provide them with support and guidance, but each Interact club is self-governing and self-supporting. The goals of Interact include developing leadership skills and personal integrity, demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others, understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work, and advancing international understanding and goodwill. Rotaract is Rotary’s service club for young adults ages 18-30. Universitybased clubs consist of undergraduate and graduate students who meet on campus. Community based clubs consist of young adults from various backgrounds, regardless of their professional or academic status. All Rotaract clubs are sponsored by a local Rotary club and conduct community and international service projects. Rotaract clubs also focus on leadership and professional development activities. Rotary Youth Exchange is Rotary’s
exchange program for youth and young adults. It allows students to spend up to a year living in a different country and learning a new culture. Students ages 15-19 can participate in a long-term exchange of up to one year, or they can choose a short-term exchange, which can last from several days to several weeks. New Generations Exchanges for young adults ages 18-25 can range from a few weeks to three months. Rotary clubs and districts sponsor exchange participants, who serve as ambassadors for their countries.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is Rotary’s leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants range from age 14 to 30, so most clubs and districts choose to focus on a specific age group, such as 14-18, 19-24, or 25-30. RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. The program demonstrates Rotary’s respect and concern for youth by providing an effective training experience for potential leaders, encouraging leadership of youth by youth, and publicly recognizing young people who serve their communities. Our Rotary clubs should be committed to involving youth and young adults in their vocational, community, and international service projects, and to providing programs and resources that support them. There are many ways to promote New Generations Service among club members, such as: • Including articles about New Generations in your club newsletter • Sharing details about New Generations projects on your club website and

through social networks • Contacting local media to cover Interact and Rotaract club service projects and sharing the stories with fellow Rotarians • Recognizing Rotarians who demonstrate outstanding commitment to New Generations September being New Generations month, it is a good time to remember that Interact was born in our very own District in 1962. The very first Interact Club was chartered at Melbourne High School and it was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Melbourne. Today, there are 16,742 Interact Clubs all over the world with a total of 385,066 service minded young people involved in Rotary club and district activities. The young people serving in Interact and Rotaract, the ones living a lifetime in a year through RYE, and the ones becoming the world leaders of tomorrow through RYLA, are the future Rotarians that will take our legacy to the next level. When we support them, we are empowering the future leaders of the entire Rotary world.

July 2014 To: 2014-15 District Governors Dear Governor Ortega: RI President Gary Huang is encouraging all clubs to Light Up Rotary in 2014-15 by hosting Rotary Days. The concept of a Rotary Day is simple: hold a fun, informal event in your community for both Rotarians and the general public and use it as an opportunity to introduce non-Rotarians to Rotary and drive interest in membership and other opportunities for engagement. These events are also a great opportunity to get Rotary Alumni and New Generations program participants more involved in their local club. Rotarians can refer to the Rotary Days brochure for ideas on how to structure and promote their Rotary Day events. We hope you’ll encourage your clubs to make Rotary Days a focus this year. To recognize clubs for their efforts, President Huang is offering an electronic certificate that you can print out and present to any clubs that undertake a Rotary Day. • Download the Rotary Days certificate (A4 paper size) • Download the Rotary Days certificate (Letter paper size) In addition, sponsoring or participating in a Rotary Day event is one of the required activities that will help clubs qualify for the 2014-15 Presidential Citation. We’re encouraging all Rotary Day organizers to share photos, videos, and stories of their events with the Rotary community and beyond. Here are just a few ways you and your clubs can publicize your impact: • Post photos of your event on Instagram using the hashtag #RotaryDay • Tweet promotional information and updates, also using the hashtag #RotaryDay • Post a video of your Rotary Day on YouTube and email a link and description to rotary.service@rotary.org. Videos may be featured in Rotary media and one outstanding video will receive a special award plaque from RI President Gary Huang. • Share your story with Rotary staff for possible inclusion in a blog, newsletter, or The Rotarian magazine. Contact us at rotary.service@rotary.org. • Visit the President’s web page to view a calendar of upcoming Rotary Day events or add your event to the calendar. We can’t wait to see all the creative approaches your clubs will take to Light Up Rotary in their communities. Best regards, Jesse Allerton Supervisor | Rotary Service Connections rotary.service@rotary.org

"Community Service Event" The Palm Beach Rotary Club Members “Josh the Otter Safe Water Program” Reads the children’s book “Josh the Otter” along with mascot to Coconut Crew day campers at the Breakers Hotel
Josh the Otter Swims by the Breakers On August 30, 2014, the Breakers hotel was pleased to have Josh the Otter come visit its Coconut Crew, which consists of children that are guests of the famed ocean view hotel. Josh the Otter, along with Rotary District 6930 District Governor Juan Ortega and the local Rotary Club of Palm Beach, came and read to the children a book about water safety as well as singing his favorite water safety songs. Josh then gave each child a book and CD to take home with them to remember its important message of swimming with a buddy! In the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1-14 (Source: CDC 2003 statistics released Fall 2005). And for each drowning death, it is estimated that 1 in 4 children suffers a serious nonfatal submersion event, many of which leave children with permanent disabilities (Source: Pediatrics, Vol. 112, No.2, Aug 2003, pp 440-445 Prevention of Drowning in Infants, Children, and Adolescents, Ruth A. Brenner, MD, MPH and Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention) Josh the Otter is a program developed in loving memory of Joshua Collingsworth who at 3 years old, slipped out of sight for a few brief moments during a family gathering and passed away shortly thereafter. His devastated parents, Kathy and Blake Collingsworth, began the task of educating both children and adults about drowning prevention and water safety which led to the creation of the Josh the Otter Program. This program consists of a children’s book that discusses the importance of swimming with a buddy as well as the potential risks of pools, rivers, lakes and oceans What better place for this gentle reminder than when on vacation in sunny south Florida this summer!

Governor Juan Ortega visits Rotary Club Boca Raton West
Juan Ortega has visited several clubs over the last month, including the Brazilian folks at the Rotary Club of Boca Raton West where Juan spoke about his experiences and key district projects. The club presented their various projects and activities, demonstrating how a small club can be active by taking a "divide and conquer" approach where club members take on responsibility to lead different projects counting on the club's support. Some of these projects included translating the Josh The Otter book to Portuguese and launching it in Brazil.

Tell Your Story
My name is Angelica Blakely and I will be at your service as Public Image Chair in our District. As part of Rotary’s new strategy we are trying to strengthen our image so that everyone will understand what Rotary stands for, how we’re different, and why it matters. I encourage all Public Image Chairs for each club to download from Rotary Brand Center the Messaging Guidelines Brochure, subtitled The Voice, and Visual Rotary Guidelines, to share with club members. In this brochure you will find powerful tools to do “What we need to do”, which is to tell our great story in a way that ensures our actions and supports our words. And if your club doesn’t have Public Image Chairs please ask your president to appoint someone. One of the best ways to bring our story to life is to simply tell about it. With this in mind we will have a space in the District newsletter called “Telling You Story”. It will be a forum for individuals to tell about the day they became a true Rotarian. Submissions will need to be no more than 400 words and, if possible, should include the author’s picture. Stories like these can inspire others and help to connect people to one another. Please, ask your P.I chair to send them to me at: anbblakely@hotmail.com 23- September 2014
