MESSAGE FROM K.R. RAVINDRAN

My Dear World Class, Today is an important day in our respective lives — perhaps the most important day — for today we embark on a voyage together that can be the starting point of an unforgettable year of service and fellowship. So let me begin by wishing you every success and know that He above will guide us as we do His work. I want to take this opportunity to remind you of a few matters at hand. Today, we launch the Rotary Global Rewards program. The program offers Rotary club members discounts on products and services for travel, entertainment, and merchandise. Make sure to promote this in your district when you are visiting clubs and talking to Rotarians. Every active Rotarian is automatically eligible to participate, and the program can be accessed atwww.rotary.org/myrotary. Please encourage your Rotarians to register immediately to take advantage of this most innovative program. Today, I also remind you of our presidential conferences in 2015-16 highlighting our Rotary areas of focus. Between January and March 2016, five conferences will be held around the world, each focusing on one area. All of the conferences are being led by local Rotary districts and are open to Rotary members and non-members. The conferences will feature engaging speakers, informative plenary sessions, and hands-on workshops. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with fellow leaders and take away new ideas and strategies to put into action. More information will be sent to you shortly but for now, visit the conference websites to learn more about each of the programs and register to attend: https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/document/2015-16presidential-conferences. Today, I truly look forward to the reality of a polio-free world. Maybe during our year in office we will be able to achieve the important milestone of interrupting the poliovirus completely. And we know, that reaching this milestone does not mean that we have reached the end of our work. Three years must pass before the world can be certified polio-free. During that time, we must continue to immunize children, continue to monitor the environment for signs of the virus, and to keep awareness high. In these most critical days, every one of us has a role to play in ensuring our success. I expect that during this year, your drive and passion for Rotary service will enable you to be aware of all of the above. For my friends, this is our time. It will never come again. Let’s Be a Gift to the World. Regards, Ravi Quest • Edition 01

DEAR CLUB, DISTRICT, & REGIONAL OFFICERS:

As part of several recent updates to My Rotary, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve added Delegation, a new tool that will help you carry out your responsibilities more efficiently. If you have a club, district, or regional role, you can now delegate your role-based access in Rotary.org with fellow Rotarians so that you can share tasks and responsibilities to better serve your club. A few key points about Delegation: Even though you are sharing your role-based access, no personal information, including your profile or My Rotary discussions, will be shared. You will not lose your role-based access if it is shared with another club member. You can only share access with someone under the same organizational umbrella. For example, club access can only be given to a fellow club member and district access can only be given to a member of the same district. You can end shared access at any time. Go to My Rotary to learn how it works. If you have questions, ask us at rotarysupportcenter@rotary.org.

International Literacy Day

Dear Club Presidents,

This year’s Rotary theme, “Be a Gift to the World” could not be more appropriate when it comes to literacy around the world. How will you and your club bring the gift of literacy? My goal as this year’s District Literacy Committee Secretary is to share information with you about literacy projects and vocational service projects your clubs may wish to explore. In addition, I’d like to encourage each of you to take pictures during each literacy event and share them through our online Quest publication. They may be submitted directly to the editor, Dini Hauser, at: ‘dini@heizer.us’

B L A C K

During September, which is designated by Rotary International as “Literacy Month,” many of us are busy with back-to-school activities, so it’s a great time to highlight literacy themed- projects. You may also want to consider hosting a special activity in recognition of International Literacy Day, which is September 8th! If your club is seeking to implement an innovative project, we hope you will find some inspiration in these periodic messages from the committee. On behalf of the District Literacy Committee, Yours in Rotary Service,

Marcia Hardney

IS YOUR FAMILY READY FOR A DISASTER?

Many people are concerned about the possibility of a public health emergency such as a natural disaster, act of terrorism or disease outbreak. However families can cope with disasters by preparing in advance and working together as a team. If something were to happen, how would you contact one another, how would you get to a safe place, and what would you do in different emergency situations? Planning what to do before a disaster strikes provides the best protection for you and your family.

Because you and your family may not be together when a disaster hits, it’s important to create a family communication plan to help you and your loved ones connect and get help. Complete a contact card for each family member and have them keep these cards handy in a wallet, purse, or backpack.

not be allowed in emergency shelters.

To help keep you up to date on disaster preparedness conferences, training and issues, as well as timely reports on regional and international disasters and how Rotary clubs can help, the Rotarians of the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas invite you to join our Disaster Network of Assistance Rotary Action Group – DNA RAG. The DNA RAG will work to develop an interactive network of Rotarians, Rotaractors, and their spouses, and affiliated Rotarian and other groups to assist with disaster preparedness, communication, and recovery on a worldwide basis. Its primary focus will be on disaster preparedness with an emphasis on communication between the affected area and potential assistance for long term recovery.

Different disasters may require you to go to different places, so make sure you identify a meeting place in your neighbourhood, a meeting place just outside your neighbourhood, and a meeting place out of town. Review these plans with all members of your family and don’t forget to consider what you would do with your pets who may

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

My name is Dini Heizer and I will be at your service as Public Image Chair in our district for the year. What is Social Media? “Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.” “Social media is not about what each one of us does or says, but about what we do and say together, worldwide, to communicate in all directions at any time, by any possible (digital) means. Michelle Chmielewski – Synthesio” Last year as part of our social media we all had the opportunity to read and get inspired through the voice of some Rotarians that shared their story in the program called “Telling your story”. Our storytelling program is an effort to share stories that not only involves the head and heart, but also moves people to use their hands and feet in action. Allow us to express our values not as abstract principles, but as lived experience to move others too. It is a common ground with your community that reflects the values that brought you here to work on building a better world! Also you had opportunity to learn about social media tolls in the training sections performed by the district team. This year we are going to work as a team to better serve you. You will be able to meet my strategic team on daily basis. Two of my strategic team is well known from you for their dedication and service to our district: Douglas Heizer and Angelica Blakely. Angelica Blakely will be in charge of “Telling Story Program” and Douglas Heizer of “Social Media. Tools”. Our team is working in and excited program to share some idea of what’s out there and what’s worthwhile. Also I invited Pedro Heizer, my son, to be part of the team to share to us his expertise in “Press Releases”. And last not least, you also are invited to be part of this team! Without your participation we cannot reach our goal to engage people to change the world!

Sincerely, Dini Heizer

OUR STORY Christine who will give up their own time, and risk their own safety to help others

In closing I would like to ask you what other organization can say they have people who have been members for 40 and 50 years. Not many. My only hope is one day I can say I have been a member that long. Make a difference become a Rotarian. Rose Arevalo Rotary Club Boca Raton Sunrise

I had attended some Rotary events with my girlfriend Marsha Gandy. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Marsha was always going somewhere or doing something with Rotary and the events seemed interesting and very community oriented. I decided to take the leap and join. I really did not know what to expect but was so pleasantly surprised. Whenever I listen to the news and see what is happening in the world today I realize how truly lucky I am. As a Rotarian I am able to show my gratitude and give back to those less fortunate . I ring the salvation army bells in front of Walmart allowing others to have a holiday. We volunteer to be personal shoppers for the back to school bash and provide school supplies and shoes to children who could not otherwise afford them. These children will start the school year with brand new up to date school supplies.

This is so important for a child’s self esteem. I could go on and on about the programs we are involved in. Rotarians thrive to help others. Recently I received an email from our President Hendrik DeMello from a Rotarian in France who was asking for help with an organization called DAY as she is a member. This woman was asking for donations as she was traveling to Jordan to help theSyrian refugees who don’t even have the basic essentials any human being should have. Upon reading this email I thought to myself this is why I am a Rotarian. I am so very proud to Say I am in an organization with people like Christine who will give up their own time, and risk their own safety to help others In closing I would like to ask you what other organization can say they have people who have been members for 40 and 50 years. Not many. My only hope is one day I can say I have been a member that long. Make a difference become a Rotarian. Rose Arevalo Rotary Club Boca Raton Sunrise
