EINLEITUNG INTRODUCTION Islay - die größte der inneren Hebriden Inseln vor der Westküste Schottlands, umspült vom nördlichen Atlantik. Berühmt durch 8 weltbekannte Whisky Brennereien, weniger wegen ihrer grandiosen Küsten und Landschaften. Die stetig wachsende Zahl der Islay FanGemeinde kennt die schönsten Plätze und Ort der Insel und ihre Einwohner. Will man Islay beschreiben muss man sich Zeit nehmen. Die Uhren auf Islay ticken anders. Lässt man sich darauf ein, erkennt man schnell, dass Islay ein Zusammenspiel von MOMENTEN aus LICHT und WASSER ist.

Islay - the largest of the Inner Hebrides islands off the west coast of Scotland, surrounded by the northern Atlantic Ocean. Famous for 8 world famous whiskey distilleries, less because of its magnificent coastlines and landscapes. The constantly growing number of Islay fan community knows the best places and place of the island and its inhabitants. If one wants to describe Islay have to take your time. All diese Elemente einzufangen war mein Ziel. Dieses Buch stellt jedoch keinen dokumentarischen Anspruch. Es soll das Wesen der Insel auf eine künstlerische Art und Weise vermitteln.

MEERLANDSCHAFTEN SEA & LANDSCAPES

Von keinem Punkt der Insel ist das Meer weit entfernt. Gerade an der Atlantikseite kann man es auch hören, selbst wenn ein Hügel den Blick versperrt. Tausende von Möglichkeiten das Zusammentreffen von Meer und Land zu bestaunen. Über Allem ein Himmel der diesem Szenario den passenden Rahmen gibt. Schnell wechselnd, sodass es nie langweilig wird.

From any point on the island, the sea is not far away. Especially on the Atlantic side you can hear it too, even if a hill blocks the view. Thousands of opportunities to marvel when sea meets land. Mahir Bay, Kilchoman

Weitläufige Sandstrände lassen Raum für ausgedehnte Spaziergänge. Meist trifft man keine Menschenseele, nur der Wind ist ein ständiger Begleiter. Wenn dann auch noch ein wenig Wasser von Oben kommt, wird man Eins mit den Elementen.

Spacious sandy beaches invite for long walks. Most of the time you are alone, just the wind is a constant companion. With some light rain, you will become a part of the elements.

Erweitert werden die Sinneseindrücke noch durch die Gerüche von Land und Meer. Beim Einatmen spürt man gleich den leichten Salzgeschmack und wird schnell süchtig danach. Tief durchatmen, den Blick schweifen lassen, dann die Augen schliessen und für einen Augenblick die Ruhe geniessen. Weiter gehen mit der Vorfreude auf Zuhause auf einen Schluck heimischen Single Malt - oder am besten gleich eine Taschenflasche mitnehmen und vor Ort geniessen.

The senses are enhanced by the smells of land and sea. When inhaled you will feel a slight salty taste and you will quickly become addicted to it. Take a deep breath, enjoy the view, then close your eyes and enjoy the silence for a moment. Go ahead with the anticipation of a wee dram of a local single malt - or at best take it along with a flask and enjoy locally.

ELEMENTE ELEMENTS Kaum auf der Insel angekommen fällt alles Unwichtige von einem ab und man ist empfänglich für die Dinge die die Insel in Überfluss bietet. ZEIT - ohne Hektik den Lauf der Dinge geniessen. LICHT mit und ohne Wolken, so wechselhaft wie das Wetter. WASSER - nicht nur um die Insel herum, sondern auch von oben. MOMENTE - innehalten für die kleinen Großartigkeiten der Natur.

ZEIT TIME

Auf Islay tickt die Uhr anders gegenüber dem Festland. Nicht schneller, nicht langsamer, eben anders. Es ist schwer zu erklären, weil es nicht nur etwas mit der Einheit Zeit zu tun hat, sondern z.B. auch mit der Lässigkeit der Menschen im Umgang miteinander, mit der Freundlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft. Jeder kennt Jeden, jeder grüßt jeden, auch beim Autofahren hebt jeder die Hand zum Gruß wenn man sich trifft. Dem kann man sich nicht entziehen und ehe man sich versieht ist die eigene innere Uhr auf die Islay Zeit eingestellt. Erst einmal auf der Insel angekommen, kann man sich dem nicht entziehen. Staunend werden Sie feststellen wie intensiv sich die Einheimischen mit ihrem Land und ihrer Kultur auseinander setzen. Tauchen auch Sie ein in diese Zeit, nehmen Sie genug davon und lassen Sie meine Bilder auf sich wirken.

Welcome to Islay time, which is the same as elsewhere, yet different. You can‘t waste it, it‘s just there, take it for a cup of tea, a walk at the beach, listen to the wind, join a dram in the dunes and watch a stunning sunset ... or stay around your cottage and turn down and open your mind for simple things. Let guide you by the Isle which has a song in it‘s heart and whisky in it‘s soul, No matter how beautiful a place is, in the end it‘s the people there and their way of living who makes you fall in love with that part of the world. May it be their friendliness, their open-mindness or just the way they happily ignore the hectic ruling of our modern life. On Islay, one cannot avoid finding these pleaseant qualities in most of the people. Be astonished how involved the Illeach‘s are with there island and culture and you will admire their various jobs, capabilities and hobbies. So welcome the Islay time and watch out your time on Islay and enjoy my pictures of those elements.

LICHT LIGHT Licht ist das Salz in der Suppe f체r den Fotografen. Ohne gutes Licht gibt es keinen guten Bilder. Von diesem Licht gibt es auf Islay jede Menge. Nie lange, da sich mit den schnell 채ndernden Wettersituationen auch die Lichtsituationen anpassen. Hier heisst es einfach nur Geduld mitbringen und es wird Licht. 13

Light is the icing on the cake for the photographer. Without good lighting, there are no good pictures. A plenty of this exists on Islay. It stays never long as the light is adapted to the rapidly changing weather situations. Here it means simply bring patience to it and it will come.

Hadere nicht mit dem Licht. Warte nur eine halbe Stunde und Du wirst sehen, dass es sich 채ndert. Dann ist Zeit f체r die n채chste oder eine bessere Aufnahme. Und will es gar nicht werden - macht nichts, Morgen ist ein neuer Tag nach der Islay-Zeit.

WASSER WATER Natürlich ist für eine Insel Wasser nichts besonderes, ist sie schließlich doch von ihm umgeben. Aber für eine Insel wie Islay, ausgesetzt den Launen des Nordatlantik und den Geschenken des Golfstroms, ist das Wasser dennoch etwas essentielles.

Auf Islay kann man sprichwörtlich aus allen Richtungen nass werden. Durch die Gischt des Meeres an rauen wie auch an ruhigen Tagen, ob bei einer Bootstour oder bei einem Spaziergang an einem der vielen Strände. Durch einen plötzlich auftretenden Regen welcher durchaus bei Wind waagrecht ins Gesicht spritzt. Oder man bekommt nasse Füsse da die Wanderschuhe dem voll gesaugtem torfigen Boden nichts mehr entgegen zu setzen haben.

On Islay you can be literally get wet from all directions. Due to the spray of the sea on rough as well as on a calm days, whether on a boat tour or take a walk on one of the many beaches. MOMENTE MOMENTS Es sind diese Momente des Zusammenspiels von Licht und Wasser, dem Geruch des Meeres und den Geräuschen der Natur, sei es vom Wind, dem Meer oder von Vögeln, die einen zur inneren Einkehr überreden und einfach nur staunend und dankbar sein lässt.

Sei es angespültes Treibholz, vielleicht von sehr weit her, oder das Auffliegen einer seltenen Krähenart über einer fast 200 Jahren alten Kirchenruine können solche Momente sein.

ORTE PLACES Ein Ort ist eine im Hinblick auf die Beschaffenheit besondere Stelle oder besonderer Platz. Soweit die Definition eines Wörterbuches. Solche Stelle und Plätze gibt es viele auf der Insel. Welche davon besonders sind muss jeder für sich entscheiden. Es kann eine besondere Begebenheit sein, eine Ortschaft, ein einsames Cottage, eine geschichtsträchtige Ruine oder auch nur eine einsame Telefonzelle im Nirgendwo.

Bowmore Bogha Mòr

Bowmore ist der Hauptort der Insel. Die 1768 gegründete Stadt hat eine markante Hauptstraße, die sich von der Küste durch die Stadt zieht und an deren Ende sich die auffällige Kilarrow Parish Church befindet.

Portnahaven Port na h-Abhainne

Die Ortschaft schmiegt sich um eine kleine Bucht. Ihr Hafen liegt gesch端tzt durch die wenige hundert Meter entfernt liegenden Inseln Orsay und Eilean Mhic Coinnich.

Port Charlotte liegt in dem Rhinns of Islay genannten S端dwestteil der Insel am Westufer von Loch Indaal. Die Ortschaft wurde im Jahre 1828 von Walter Frederick Campbell gegr端ndet und nach seiner Mutter benannt.

Das Wohnen auf Islay kann auf den ersten Blick recht einsam sein. Aber auch zu dem entferntesten Haus gibt es immer einen Nachbarn, auch wenn man ihn bei dem Blick aus dem Fenster nicht sieht.

Eine Mobilfunkverbindung ist in vielen Gegenden der Insel nicht gegeben. Dennoch ist diese öffentliche Möglichkeit der Kommunikation eine Seltenheit. Es gibt nur noch 2 öffentliche Telefonzellen, außerhalb von Ortschaften, an weit abgelegenen Orten auf der Insel.

A wireless connection is not the case in many parts of the island. However, this public way of communicating is a rarity. There are only two public phones, outside towns, in far flung places on the island. 28

EINWOHNER INHABITANTS Obwohl die Insel im Vergleich zu Anderen recht gut besiedelt ist, stehen den etwa 3.500 Einwohner z.B. mehr als 30.000 Schafe gegenüber. Zählt man noch andere Vierbeiner wie Rinder und eine große Population von Rotwild dazu, kann man sich denken, wem man am wahrscheinlichsten bei einer Wanderung begegnet. So stelle ich hier nicht den Menschen vor, sondern die tierischen Einwohner welche sich, egal ob wild oder gezähmt, den widrigen Lebensverhältnissen angepasst haben.
