This piece was designed to resemble the Chinese character “zi”, meaning child, written in its calligraphically form. If viewed from the front, the soft curves of the written character can be seen. Several different calligraphy fonts were considered during the planning process in order to find the most suitable font. Wood was chosen as the material best conveys the cadence and curves of the written character. If viewed from the back, the chair resembles the graceful seated posture of a woman’s back. The twists and curves were inspired by the curves of a woman, with the right side of the chair resembling an arm symbolizing a mother’s embrace. The user can recline and can also lean to the right to rest their head, making this chair all the more comfortable to relax in.

Inspirations Calligraphy is a written form of art. The art of calligraphy contains two major aspects: “Usage” and “Aesthetics”. Wood is used to convey the beauty of the calligraphy and the cultural quality of the piece, allowing the calligraphy to have a three-dimensional face while possessing a special hidden meaning. The Chinese character “zi” contains several different meanings. It can mean newborn, child, son, relative, nephew or niece, seed, fruit or ovum. In addition the character “zi” is also used in the names of many knowledgeable and scholarly people such as Confucius “Kong Zi”, Meniscus “Meng Zi”, and Master Zhuang “Zhuang Zi”.

The user can lean their whole body against the chair, not only relaxing their body but also freeing their mind of stress. By resting their head and neck against the backrest, they can find an escape, if only for a few moments, from the busyness and bustle of a work or living environment in the city.
Several layers of wood were stacked, cut and then sanded to create the smooth shape of this piece. Many different shapes can be formed using this method and if stacked correctly the finished project will have the appearance that it was cut out from a single section of wood.

Ergonomic Multiple books on ergonomics were consulted during the planning and crafting of this piece. The angle measurements of the backrest and seat are 100~110 degrees and the height, taller than a traditional chair, stands at 39~41 cm tall. The buttock-popliteal depth is smaller or equal to about 64.5 cm. extensive research was put into finding the perfect sitting angle for the average human body. During the manufacturing process, many people of different heights and sizes were asked to test the chair to find the most suitable and comfortable angle. When seated in the chair the user can recline and rest their head to the right, allowing the user to sit in a comfortable and relaxing position.

Process
A.First a 3D modeling software was used to set measurements. B. Then a model was made to compose the measured panels into a fixed unit. C.Each panel was then connected with wood dowels and glue to hold the shape of the structure. D.The body was laminated with a veneer.

E.Dowels were added to the inside of the structure to maintain stability. F. A grinder and sander were used to smooth the surface of the piece. G.A rasp was used to fine tune and make sure the surface was trimmed smoothly. H.Then planer knife was used to smooth out any rough areas. I. Lastly, Osmo polyx hardwax wood lacquer was applied as a finish.

Foxes by nature are nimble and witty animals. In Chinese there is an idiom that says, “reveal the fox’s tail” which means to reveal ones cover or reveal ones true motives. With a fox’s tail as a backrest, the user will appear as if they have a fox’s tail, giving this chair a fun and interesting aspect. Giving furniture a character and personality brings life to a home and increases laughter and warmth in the atmosphere.

Inspirations This chair is complete with a fox’s tail and a set of fox legs that both slowly deepen in color at the tips. Light brown beech wood was used to convey the color of the foxes coat and dark brown walnut wood to convey color of the feet and tip of the tail. Since beech wood and walnut wood are both inexpensive and easy to sand, they are great materials for making furniture.

Because "deer" and "salary" of Paul is a homonym, equal to today's salary. In ancient times, a government official in order to get the money to the court - the salary, it has been contained official position, officials intended. One hundred deer is, "Bluff" rich meaning. Families with deer works, but there are better images auspicious into Paul's!

Inspirations I designed this chair in the traditional Ming dynasty style. The furniture designs of the Ming dynasty had three special characteristics: First, the legs of the chair are smooth, round and tubular in shape. Second, the angle of the backrest can range from 100 degrees to 105 degrees, which is the most suitable angle for ultimate comport. Third, all four legs slant outward at the bottom giving a sturdy and comfortable impression. This chair is both technology and art embodied in one. The armrests, designed as reindeer antlers, are at just the right height to comfortably rest ones arms upon. The backrest was designed to represent the head of the deer, and the legs of the chair, slant outward in Ming dynasty style, resembling deer hooves.

This is the very first chair I designed as a woodworking student in high school. The legs of this stool, which resemble tree trunks, are the most important part of this piece. The legs were carved with a chisel carefully carving the twisted twine shape of a tree trunk, giving the legs the appearance of slowly creeping downwards firmly grasping the floor like a sturdy tree. In my opinion, the most important element for a chair to have is a set of strong sturdy legs. If the legs are too thin or placed incorrectly the chair is destined to fall over. However, if the legs are placed correctly, and the user’s application of force is taken into consideration, the chair will be able to bear the whole weight of the user. This aspect brought the thought of a tree supported by a sturdy trunk to mind. Just like a sturdy tree bears the weight of its branches and leaves, a chair with sturdy legs can bear the weight of a human.

I enjoy creating designs that have a special meaning or story behind them. This piece was designed to portray scattered leaves on a boulevard in autumn and a little fox playing amongst the falling leaves. Pieces of maple wood and walnut wood were used to create the checkered body of the box, which was then sawed into the shape of a maple leaf. Rosewood and beech wood were used to represent the two colors of the fox’s tail. The tail is in just the right position to appear as the stem of the maple leaf, and the fox’s head can be used as a handle to open the lid of the box.

Inspirations The use of a cute animal and the shape of a fall maple leaf make this box both interesting and unique. Whether used in the home to serve as a container for candy and nuts or in the office to serve as an office supply container, this box makes a great conversation piece.

Cellphone stands are one of the most commonly used office object of today. Cellphone stands are very useful objects that not only provide a safe place for your phone, but also easily allow you to see an incoming call or text. When a cellphone stand takes the shape of a playful curvy cat with movable joints and a bell on its tail, not a single phone call or text will be missed.

Inspirations The user can even choose the cat’s pose of the day to add charm and interest to the work atmosphere. This piece is not only a cellphone stand, but also a helping hand. When the phone vibrates the cat will rock back and forth, causing the bell to ring as a fun and whimsical reminder, alerting the user of an incoming call.

This puzzle was created for my high school art class’s three-year reunion art exposition. Three years after having already graduated from high school, this exposition not only brought everyone together again but also gave us an opportunity to show off the skills we had learned. I designed this puzzle using all sorts of different animals to show my thoughts about my graduating class. Just like a puzzle, each of us has their own special purpose, but all are equally important in their own special way. When we’re all together we are like one big happy family.

Inspirations My classmates all have their own unique personality and characteristics. Some are tall and slender like giraffes, others are round and cuddly like Pandas, while others are strong leaders like lions. Some are warm and friendly like rabbits, while others can be shy and timid like mice.

Lampshade
Lampshades are not only useful for softening light, they can also set a mood to the atmosphere of a room. This lampshade is hand carved with images of butterflies in flight and gathering nectar amongst flowers. Butterflies are often mentioned in Chinese poetry and verse in admiration of the connection and relationship between butterflies and flowers.

Inspirations
When the user returns home and turns on the light, the light takes the shape of butterflies. All four sides of the lampshade cast a different shadow into the atmosphere adding a touch of color and romance.
