Professor Thomas Tilluca Han 4th yr _ STUDIO SPRING 2021 THEME: Understanding Architecture as a Set of (4) Problems, Not as a Thing or a Solution We will do 4 Projects of Increasing Complexity. Teacher may add, or increase the parameter of the problem during the course of this semester, depending on the Students’ ability and interest General Objective – in 2 parts: 1. Identify and specify the architecturality in the assemblage of forms and materials. 2. Combine layers of architecturality to create a complex form of structuralized spatiality. Project 1: Architecture as a problem of Structured FORM Duration: 2 Weeks Question: How does Structure affect Form? Why is Form = Structure? Materials: Paper Board, Pearl Board Given: 4 Classes of VOLUMES: A, B, C, + X • Volume Footprint sizes (in cm) : 5x5 / 10x10 / 15x15 • Use the following PROPORTIONS: 1:1 / 1:2 / 1:3 / 1:4 • X = Unspecified Form — to be discussed in class Example: A: 5cm:: 5x5x10 (1:2) / 5x5x15 (1:3) / 5x5x20 (1:4) Objective: Assemble three (3) volumes to form an X-Y-Z structure using only the MINIMAL amount of structure to hold them. Required: 4 completed models ATTENTION!! The volumes CANNOT touch one another. They must be separated from one another by minimum of 1 cm, maximum of 3 cm.
Project 2: A as a problem of Materiality & Connection Duration: 4 Weeks Question: How do materials affect Form & Structure? Given: 3 Classes of VOLUMES: A, B, C. • Volume Footprint sizes: 10x10cm / 15x15cm / 20x20cm • Use the following PROPORTIONS:: 1:1 / 1:2 / 1:3 / 1:4 Example: B: 15cm:: 15x15x30 (1:2) / 15x15x45 (1:3) Requirements: 1 Model, and Orthogonal Drawings: Plans, Sections, 3-D Materials: 4 kinds from the following categories: Wood, Metal, Glass + 1 more Additional Element: To be announced in class Objective: Assemble three (3) volumes + (?) to form a free-standing X-Y-Z structure using only the MINIMAL structures necessary to hold them. The BASE is 90x90x20. Project 3: Architecture as a problem of Proportion, Number, Division, & Distribution Duration: 4 Weeks Question: How is Spatiality achieved as an extension of Distribution of elements? Requirements: Drawings: Plans, Sections, 3-D Materials: SKETCH-UP, RHINO, etc Method: RESEARCH + EMULATION + APPLICATION Objective: Design of an Inhabitable Structure Project 4: A as a problem of PROGRAM (Transforming Volume into Space) Duration: 4 Weeks Lesson: What is ‘Program’? How is to different from ‘Function’? Requirements: 1 Model, and Orthogonal Drawings: Plans, Sections, 3-D Materials: Same as Project 3. Objective: Design of an Inhabitable Structure
