Management Buy-out

I think what Alltruck should be most proud of is the success that they have had. I was told that most MBOs fail in the first 5-10 years, not only did we prove that wrong, we did it in a recession where a main competitor didn’t survive. It seems that we all want to progress and make the business even stronger to secure our futures. Scott Bailey 19 years at Alltruck

One of the most significant moments in the 25 year history of Alltruck plc. In May 2000, Paul Robinson, Debbie Halliday and Keith Revill led a management buy-out from the Bank of Scotland to acquire the rights to the name Alltruck plc, a few rental vehicles, a number of significant distribution contracts and a Leicester workshop with an ERF Service Franchise. The Management Buy Out saved the future of Alltruck plc and 100 employees’ jobs in the process..

Research shows that most management buyouts go bust within 3 years but within 3 years the team had paid back the £1,000,000 they had borrowed, Alltruck plc was alive, well and thriving. And the rest – as they say – is history…

My Alltruck highlight Getting promoted has probably been my Alltruck highlight and my progression and development as a member of staff. I worked hard, and when the opportunity became available I spoke to Deepak and he gave me the chance to work in a higher position.

Keith Liddle 3 years at Alltruck

When the accounts team won team of the year and when I won employee of the month last month too. It is really nice that we get some sort of recognition for the hard work we put in.

I was employed by Alltruck from September 07 to April 2012 and have now been back since November 2014. Personally my career when I previously worked here went from strength to strength. I started as HR/Payroll Administrator which was a lower level than I had previously worked. I took this role on due to the working hours and also because during the interview I got a good feel about the company. Not long into the role I feel I began to show my experience and was given the opportunity to support managers more and more and soon became Personnel Manager. I then became part of the Exec Team which is when I began to stretch myself and enter new experiences. I learnt a lot in these few years and can only thank the Directors for giving me the opportunities and being there to support me. I have now come back in a different capacity supporting Victoria but Alltruck have enabled me to work the hours I need to support my family and given me the opportunity to be back at work again.

1994

Moving to Leicester A landmark – metaphorically and literally – in Alltruck history! In 1994, Alltruck plc acquired the former site of British Shoe, including a 12 bay commercial vehicle workshop and connected office premises. The site became the head office of Alltruck plc in 2000 and has seen continued development and investment during that time; to the offices, the workshop and all the people within them through Alltruck’s commitment to training and development.

Alltruck in the community: Employee of the month

Alltruck first launched our Employee of the Month scheme in 2010 with the winner each month receiving a cheque to donate to a charity of their choice. This has been a fantastic initiative for the business, because it recognises the wonderful achievements of our employees but also gives staff the opportunity to support a charity or good cause which is close to their heart.

Since 2010 over ÂŁ10,000 has been donated to support good causes through the Employee of the Month scheme.

The highlight for me was the new beginning – the management buyout. There were people within the business at the time who did not have the right attitude and the work became a chore.

My Alltruck highlight

But the management buy-out was a fresh start. Yes, to start with it was extremely hard work but everybody helped each other out, did alternative roles and we made it work. It was exciting times! Scott Bailey 19 years at Alltruck

Pink week is where the board and management team have some away days off-site. We meet and look strategically at the business, we share ideas and discuss plans and proposals for the future. When I first attended this week, not only did it raise my awareness of the business but it also gave me greater understanding of where I want to be in my career too – it makes me feel part of the business and part of Alltruck’s success.

I can call my Alltruck work colleagues my friends. I can see them after work, and go out with them and they are my actual friends as well as my colleagues and that makes work so much easier. Rachel Deacon 7 years at Alltruck

In 2013 when the accounts team won Team of the Year and I won Employee of the Year at the Annual Presentation. We had worked really hard to raise the effectiveness of the accounts function and so it was a real highlight to be acknowledged by the rest of the business, in the presence of customers and suppliers. Great Trucks

1997

Our 1000th truck Starting with no trucks and no workshop in 1990, the business had come a long way by 1997 when we put our 1000th truck on the road – a shiny new DAF XF. With 2000 Alltruck vehicles on the road at any one time today, this was a real landmark in the history of the business.

“Great trucks”, it is a simple philosophy but one we take very seriously. We are committed to offering our customers the newest and best vehicles available and pride ourselves on the age and condition of our fleet and continue to be a pioneer when it comes to offering our customers industry firsts. Alltruck in the community: Joining forces with Leicestershire Cares

R ecognition of our support

It is hugely rewarding for us as a business and employees to support Leicestershire Cares in a wide range of activities. Which is why it has been extra special to be recognised for our support by Leicestershire Cares too: • Company of the Year in 2013 (and finalist in 2015) • Victoria and Gemma Volunteer of the Year nominee in 2014 and 2015 • The prestigious Golden Heart Awards for Debbie Halliday, James Ball and Gemma Humphrys

Alltruck has always been passionate about supporting the local community which we work in, as shown through our fundraising activity and sponsorship of local sports teams and clubs. So when Leicestershire Cares approached us in 2012 – it was the perfect fit for our business and our culture. Rather than donate money, Leicestershire Cares sees our employees volunteer their work time to support a wide range of community projects and initiatives, including: • Fundraising activity • Community regeneration projects • Collect for Christmas challenges • Employability skills development in schools • Learning support in primary schools • Community safety work placements

18

It has been a hugely rewarding experience both for Leicestershire Cares, but mostly for our employees who have had the opportunity to gain new experience, develop new skills and give something back to their local community.

My Alltruck highlight

Why Alltruck? As I have said before, that one for me is very easy to answer…because of the people, working at Alltruck does not feel like going to work, by that I don’t mean that we don’t work hard because everyone at Alltruck is committed to doing a quality job. I mean we share the same vision and beliefs, and know that with the support and guidance of the board and colleagues anything is achievable, “you can if you think you can”. The sky’s the limit and the opportunities are endless. Emma Sutton 7 years at Alltruck

11 months ago I was moved from the workshop to become a mobile technician and I was terrified of the level of responsibility needed to undergo my day to day work! My highlight was joining and finding so many people who were all so welcoming! The wealth of knowledge that has been shared with myself is incredible. Sukhraj Chhokar 1 year at Alltruck 20

I was shy and lacked confidence but Alltruck believed in me, they threw me in at the deep end and I floated back to the top with a bucket load of new skills. I can’t thank Alltruck enough for that.

Being a newcomer to Alltruck, when I started I found everyone welcoming and very helpful indeed. I was impressed with the team togetherness and how everyone interacts with their peers.

As part of our work with the public sector we supplied 14 purpose built Incident Support Unit vehicles on contract hire.

2008

Working with the public sector A vital part of looking after our customers’ commercial vehicles is managing the maintenance schedule to ensure the truck stays in top condition and working its best. This is something that the Alltruck fleet team has been doing since the day we opened our doors, so it made sense for us to apply this approach to other types of vehicles. In 2008 we began managing the maintenance for just 10 ambulances and through the tireless work of the public sector department – winning Alltruck Team of the Year in 2012 – we now work with six NHS Ambulance Trusts, managing 600 public sector vehicles nationwide.

I am tremendously proud of the public sector team and everything we have achieved over the years. We have been working with the public sector now for almost ten years and the knowledge and experience that we have developed during that time has helped to build a strong and successful working relationship with the ambulance Trusts. Coupled with this, our public sector customers tell us that they choose Alltruck due the high levels of service they receive from us, the close working relationship we give them and the product knowledge and technical expertise of our Fleet Controllers. Wayne Gratland, General Manager (Public Sector)

2013

An award winning employer Simply put, our staff are central to our success at Alltruck plc and that is why we promote a peoplefocussed culture that nurtures and develops talent within our company. Alltruck’s business doesn’t revolve around the vehicles we put on the road, it begins and ends with one thing – our customers. We operate in a competitive industry and it is our team of people that set us apart from the rest. At the heart of this is a talented and dedicated workforce supported by continued initiatives to boost staff engagement, training and development. This commitment and passion to an employee focussed culture resulted in us winning in the Human Resources category at the Leicester Mercury Business Awards 2013.

24

In the same year Alltruck plc were a shortlisted finalist for Employer of the Year at the National Business Awards. Again the award nomination was in recognition of our commitment to employee engagement and empowerment – with Alltruck plc a place where staff can genuinely develop and grow their careers.

25

My Alltruck highlight Being promoted from Technician to Workshop Controller in 2005 has to be my highlight. I began my Alltruck career as an apprentice technician and it was the first major leap forward in my career and since this time the business has given me the opportunities and the support to further develop and progress my career forward. Alex Rees 18 years at Alltruck

Joining Alltruck and the fantastic team within the public sector department, the ongoing training and support from the team and beyond makes settling into a new role so much easier.

Highlight of my career was more recent when I passed my International CPC qualification and took on the Transport Manager role for the DTE distribution contract at Ilkeston. The qualification was something I had wanted to do for a long time, and when the opportunity arose I jumped at it. Emma Sutton 7 years at Alltruck

The highlight of my career was having the idea to open up MOT testing facilities at Leicester. I approached the Board with the idea and to ask for over £300k of capital investment. The Board believed in my dream, they invested the money and they let me manage the project. Looking back I think they invested the £300k in me, not the MOT facilities. Wayne Nicholson 13 years at Alltruck

I remember the first Strategy Forum I attended. It really showed me that this is a business with heart and depth. It’s not just trucks that we do but it’s why we do trucks. Understanding the reason why gives you a sense of value about what we do. It makes the business more personal, it gives it a meaning and common goals which we are all working together to achieve. Alltruck Nottingham expanded the reach of Alltruck plc further into the Midlands and North of England, allowing us to better serve the needs of our growing customer base. £900,000 was invested in the acquisition and development of the Colwick site – another example of Alltruck’s commitment to investing in its people and facilties to deliver the highest levels of service to its customers.

Alltruck should be most proud of the fact that it has come through tough recessions, it has managed to grow and maintain stability, and at the same time keep the high standard and quality service for our customers.

What should Alltruck be most proud of?

2002

Women in transport award for Debbie Following the management buy-out in 2000, Alltruck plc had 150 vehicles,100 employees and a new Board of Directors. However, in terms of working processes and administrative procedures, Alltruck were starting from the beginning. As new Finance Director of Alltruck plc, Debbie Halliday set about creating an accounting and administrative function for the business from scratch, setting Alltruck plc on the path to the financially strong and stable business which it is today. Debbie’s achievement was recognised with an award for administrative excellence at the Women in Transport Awards in 2002; a proud day for Debbie and Alltruck plc.

With a passion for ‘Raising Standards’ Allfleet delivered a full portfolio of services including new builds, accident repair and refurbishment with the team working tirelessly to achieve ISO9001 and VCA accreditations. Allfleet Bodyshop closed its doors in 2015 but during its 8 years trading it built a reputation for high quality, customer focused bodyshop services working with some of the biggest fleets in the UK. In 2015, Alltruck plc created it’s own bodyshop division to ensure the continued quality of it’s supply chain.

The main thing that stands out is how Alltruck has grown people in their careers throughout its history‌ Two people who stand out as prime examples of this are Adam Stanton and Natalie Coates! Knowing I could have the opportunities to progress and grow in the next 25 years with Alltruck is inspirational indeed!

What should Alltruck be most proud of? Alltruck being nominated at the Motor Transport Awards and I was very proud to see our company name nominated with some of the biggest companies in the UK, at the evening in Park Lane.

I think the main thing Alltruck should be proud of is the way that it treats its customers. Many of the public sector customers cannot recommend us highly enough, and to be a part of that is a proud thing. Dan Valentine 2 years at Alltruck

What should Alltruck be most proud of?

It’s a successful and adaptable business. It has and continues to, like a chameleon, change to meet the needs and requirements of a changing climate and through its values helps employees to build on their experience in the workplace.

The management buyout in the year 2000 enabling Alltruck to re-engage with it’s entrepreneurial spirit. Alex Rees 18 years at Alltruck

Throughout its 25 years Alltruck has remained steadfast in its belief that the company’s real competitive advantage is its people. The continual training and development, the belief that it is better to try and fail than not try at all and the ‘no blame’ culture throughout the business encourages people to discover their true potential. I think Alltruck should be proud of still having a company built upon the same ethics as it started with 25 years ago and these have not changed even through growth.

Alltruck should be proud of their core values and principles, which we remain true to regardless of the economic climate. Alltruck have always believed in supplying the best spec’d trucks in the market and exceptional customer service. Matthew Coates 17 years at Alltruck

Business Partner of the Year at the 2011 Annual Presentation

partnership with Vistage In 2007 Alltruck plc began their hugely successful partnership with Vistage UK. Vistage is an organisation for Managing Directors to share insights and expertise with other business leaders. The real value for Alltruck plc however has been in the expert speakers and trainers which Vistage has given all Alltruck employees access to. This has been part of a wider commitment by Alltruck to the training and development of their employees: creating a talented, skilled and engaged workforce delivering the highest levels of service to customers.

As grand as it sounds, some of the Vistage sessions I have attended have been life changing. I have been fortunate enough to have seen speakers such as Grant Leboff and Marcus Child and what I have learnt from these sessions has not only had a huge impact on my work so far but will be learnings that I reflect on for the rest of my career. 48

The Leadership Gateway programme was born when Paul Robinson’s Vistage group identified a need to develop the skills and business understanding of their senior management teams. The initiative is designed to empower managers and give them the tools to have a genuine impact on the businesses they work in. This includes material such as leadership styles, effective delegation and presentation technique - all delivered by internationally renowned business speakers like Brad Waldron, Malcolm Smith and Roger Harrop. Over the last two years, six Alltruck managers have taken part in the programme, which has given the management team the ability to challenge ‘how things have always been done’ and deliver tangible results at a strategic level.
