Editors’ Remarks “Cultural Taichung”– this is a city that has been made beautiful by art. The Art Inheritance Taichung Artists’ Relay Exhibition was the first exhibition of its kind to be established in Taiwan. Following the merger of Taichung City and Taichung County to create an enlarged Taichung City, the number of artists seeking to take part in the Exhibition has grown dramatically. This year, the Exhibition is being held for the fourth time, with the 191st to 196th places being filled by Li Ts’ui-t’ing, Wu Wen-k’uan, Chang Yeh, Kuo Hsin-yi, Lei An-p’ing and Liu Ming-k’ai, with works that include distemper paintings, oil paintings, sculptures, watercolors, ceramic carvings, seal carving, etc. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the artists for their hard work and dedication, thanks to which culture and the arts continue to thrive in Taichung, providing spiritual nourishment for Taichung’s citizens. Taking the 191 st spot this year was distemper painter Li Ts’ui-t’ing. As Li sees it, art is created by a constant, ongoing process of deciding whether to strive for compromise, or reject compromise, in the relationship between tradition, history and the changing times. Li has worked to develop a new artistic lexicon for traditional Chinese painting, and has striven tirelessly to raise art to a higher, purer level. In the “Sound of Light” series, Li reinterprets the existing “texts” of traditional Chinese landscape painting from a female perspective, and in doing so refines her own individual “language of form.” Li’s “Existentialist Clockwork Spring Toy Series” adopts a humorous approach towards some of the serious issues that people face in their lives. Moving from the personal to the universal in the themes that they address, Li’s works are imbued with the positive forces of love and light, portraying complex emotional states in an intensely poetic way and presenting a direct, unaffected

view of the artist’s own inner world, while at the same time embodying an untrammeled East Asian humanist philosophy. This year, 192nd place in the Exhibition went to the oil painter Wu Wen-k’uan. The subject matter for Wu’s paintings is taken mainly from the “psychological theatre” of “Old Essence, New Vistas” Taking as his starting point the different thoughts and emotions that we experience during our daily lives, Wu uses everyday objects such as sunflowers, still lifes, violins, traditional ceremonial dances, and cats, to explore the mysteries of existence. For Wu, a cat’s personality symbolizes the complexity of human life, capturing the internal changes that people undergo and the difficulty of pinning down the character of any given individual, while at the same time the animal’s air of mystery embodies the complex range of emotions and desires that animate our lives. By using objects as metaphors for feelings, and then piecing these objects together in layers to create a textured, streamlined artistic lexicon, Wu is able to express his own unique aesthetic experience, in the form of spatial structures that permit multiple interpretations. This year, an installation artist has been invited to take part in the Exhibition, for the first time ever. Sculptor Chang Yeh, in the 193rd spot, excels at fusing together the spatial and temporal dimensions to portray the beauty of the individual moment; his work combines a latent internal dynamism with external expression that features pronounced variation in form. Chang believes that, while different natural phenomena can be approached from different perspectives, they all share a common characteristic in their ability to move people. The main thrust of Chang’s work involves internal reactions leading to sudden change, giving the viewer a sense of the beauty of the moment, together with detailed, realistic or expressionist depiction of external forms. The wide range

of subject matter tackled in Chang’s work constitutes a record of the artist’s subjective visual perception of the natural world. Another artist being invited to take part in the Exhibition for the first time, in the 194th spot, is the watercolor painter Kuo Hsin-yi. Exploiting both the expressive power of watercolors as an art form and its constant variation and uncertainty, Kuo’s work displays a passionate creative and exploratory enthusiasm. Kuo’s motivation for undertaking a painting usually derives from his having been deeply moved by something and wanting to share it with the viewer. Ordinary people and everyday events become the main characters in Kuo’s paintings, recording simple yet beautiful events and moments from our surroundings. Kuo’s recent work reflects his fascination with ponds and pools. In seeking to depict how water flowing into a pond becomes stilled, Kuo has discovered the signs of spiritual life force and of the motion of life; there is a sympathetic response with the artist’s own internal dialog, creating works that give the viewer a sense of peace while also inspiring deep reflection. In the 195th spot this year is ceramic sculptor Lei An-p’ing, who has recently been awarded the 2013 TaTun Master Craftsperson Award. Lei has taught himself the paper-cast sculpting technique, taking traditional sculpture methods as the basis for developing something innovative and new. His sculptures are characterized by their classical, refined color tones, streamlined shapes, and detailed, realistic textures. These multi-layered works are lively and varied, and are decorated with auspicious flower and plant motifs that seem almost to add a floral fragrance to the work as a whole. Lei’s tea service works are ideally suited for use in a refined, elegant tea ceremony, and represent the apogee of aesthetic sensibility in the ceramic arts.

The 196th place in this year’s Exhibition went to seal carver Liu Ming-k’ai. Describing himself as a “wild and unconstrained wielder of the seal-carver’s knife,” Liu revels in the interplay between sculpting knife and stone, exploiting the artistic potential to the full and allowing his spirit to fly free in the purity of the moment. Liu’s works incorporate a wide range of calligraphic styles from different periods of history, from the Oracle Bone Script of ancient China down through the style used in inscriptions on bronze vessels, the Chu script as used on bamboo slips and for writing on silk, the Qin and Han Dynasty styles, the styles favored in the Wei, Jin, Tang and Song Dynasties, the “Bird and Insect Script” of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the cursive seal script, right through to contemporary Chinese and Japanese graphic styles. With his smooth, flowing style, and showing himself equally adept at carving on stone, jade or ceramic material, Liu combines calligraphic beauty with the expertise of an expert sculptor, embodying the unique artistic approach of the master seal carver. The Art Inheritance Taichung Artists’ Relay Exhibition will continue to fulfill its mission of keeping the flame of art alive, in the hope that the sparks from this flame can ensure its continuation as an eternal fire. It is our earnest hope that, in the future, even more artists will take up the baton by participating in the Exhibition, helping to write glorious new chapters in the history of the arts in Taichung.
