England 1 (T.Howard) Germany 6 (F.Gunther, N.Pluta 3, K.Kiefer, L.Arndt) A hat-trick from Nicola Pluta put Germany back in contention in the Pool. Germany started the game with relentless pressure on the English defence from the starting whistle! England held off until the 11th minute when a scramble in front of goal saw Feline Gunther defect a rebound into the goal. Constant pressure by the German’s, hunting it seemed like a pack, saw them 4-0 ahead by half time. England did have some chances in the second half and clawed one back via a well worked corner, back to the injector Tess Howard who took no hesitation in firing home England’s only goal of the game. The game finished 6-1 and Germany’s Coach Markku Slawyk said he that today he was “Very happy with the performance and the result, the performance against Russia was good, but the result not.” He added that he was very happy with the number of goals that his team had scored. amount of pressure throughout. The Irish defence remained remarkably disciplined conceding just 1 green card the entire match. There was little Buckley could do in the Irish net for the first 2 goals as Germany swarmed in packs and were quickest to the rebound. Their precision saw them routinely shift the play from one end of the pitch to the other but Hannah McLoughlin did well to marshal the backline alongside Kerrie Burns. Ireland created several chances for themselves early in the second half, and the pace of both Niamh and Michelle Carey caught the German’s off guard. Irish effort was never in doubt as the Little Green Army chased down every ball and made every tackle for the entire 70 minutes. The victory for Germany see’s them into the semi finals while Ireland now move into Pool C alongside Russia, Poland and and Spain. U18 EuroHockey Championships Netherlands And Germany Will Contest The Final Germany 1 (L. Arndt) Belgium 0 Strong defensive game from Germany saw them battle their way into the Final of the EuroHockey Championships. A single goal in Arndt minute was the difference between the teams. GER 1-0 BEL Germany take the early lead thanks to a goal from Arndt, from a turnover in the midfield and an impressive run from Pia Maertens who passed it to Arndt on the base line, she scored from a seemingly impossible angle. Both teams had chances to change the scoreline, but the German defence remained rock solid. A PC in the dying minutes was Belgium’s best chance to go ahead but keeper Heyn saved and the score remained 1-0 on favour of Germany. Final: Netherlands 2 (F van der Elst 2) Germany 0 Two Fay van der Elst deflections were enough to see the Netherlands win the girls EuroHockey Youth Championships final with a supremely composed performance to defeat Germany 2-0. They controlled much of the play as their opponents sat deep for long periods, playing in half court an looking to pounce on the break when they good. But the orange tide were patient and eventually took their chances when they came along. Van der Elst broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when she got on the end of Gabrielle Mosch’s powerful diagonal pass from left to right into the circle. And the clinching effort came with 10 minutes remaining with one of the moments of a top quality tournament. Freeke Moes flicked the ball out of triangle of German players far out on the left wing to create the space and she spotted van der Elst racing into the circle. The pass was slightly the wrong side of her body for a natural deflection but, no matter, she redirected the ball the opposite direction, wong-footing Karlotta Lammers to find the bottom corner. It was a fittingly beautiful goal to match a strong tournament from the Dutch in which they improved rapidly from game to game. Indeed, their opening 4-3 win over Spain was their toughest moment, needing a last minute Yibbi Janssen goal to claim the points. They also struggled in the first half against Belgium before emerging victorious while their first clean sheet only arrived in the semi-final against England. There was no doubt about the final, however, as Marieke Dijkstra leads them a famous success.
