The school from the south-east simply absorbed the pressure and countered well enough to earn another penalty which Tector landed from the left for 11-0 just before the break. It was a hill that needed climbing quickly.
Instead, Kilkenny went straight on the offensive, Tector breaking strongly and Hodgins having the wheels to get on his shoulder for a fine finish in the 33rd minute. CBC were intent on a fightback, led by captain Liam Forster, to come within five metres before out-half Eoin Quinn chipped over the top for centres Adam Kilroy and James Finnegan to come close to claiming the bouncing ball.
It was as close as they came with Hodgins striking from distance to complete his hat-trick for replacement Dan O’Neill to add the extras. Kilkenny College players celebrate at the final whistle. Matthew Hodgins of Kilkenny College breaks away.
Matthew Hodgins was the hat-trick hero as Kilkenny beat Monkstown at Donnybrook to clinch their place in the quarter-finals. The full-back’s greatest strength was his support lines, showing up in the right place at the right time to put the finishing touches to the fine work of his three-quarters. The rangy Hodgins struck in the tenth, 33rd and last minutes in what was an athletic display of his ability and how his forwards caused the CBC defence to narrow by punching up the middle. Out-half Charlie Tector orchestrated their attack well and wing Adam Strong picked up the fourth try in an impressive performance. CBC were unable to register a score, which owed much to Kilkenny’s watertight defence, despite the best efforts of captain Liam Forster
