Yearbook 2014

Thank you It really doesn’t seem a whole year ago that we were writing the introduction for our last Yearbook, time really does fly when you’re busy and enjoying the rewards of working for the Northamptonshire Community Foundation. And what a successful year it’s been. Vital services During the past year we are thrilled to have

funded 261 community groups and individuals a total of £705,899 to enable them to provide vital services to the communities and the people that they serve. Thank you to our fund holders and donors; we have raised £1.3 million which includes donations for now and for the future. Not only are funds essential to keep enriching our communities, but endowment building is also the key to our own sustainability in helping to shape the future of our thriving communities in years to come.

Valuable partnerships We value our partnerships and are delighted to be the chosen grant giving charitable organisation as the ‘go-to-place’ for the effective distribution of local funds, selected by a variety of donors to support a wide range of themes. Our strength is with our partners and we value our relationships with our locally committed philanthropists, our County, Borough and District Councils, the family charitable trusts, our valuable business supporters, the professional advisers who refer and recommend our work and the strategic work with our voluntary sector colleagues.

Inspirational We’ve visited the groups that we’ve helped to fund;

food banks, youth groups, older people’s lunch and social clubs, pocket parks, allotments, resource centres, education projects, cricket clubs, football clubs, counselling groups, disability projects, multicultural and community events, community choirs, theatre groups…… we could continue but the list is too long. All we ask is that you turn the pages of the yearbook, read the inspirational and humbling stories of the people and the communities that we give to and let us know what excites you. And if you’d like to get involved or know more about our work, please get in touch. Whether you’ve time, or funds, or both, to quote the wise words of Anne Frank,

‘No one has ever become poor by giving.’ Victoria Miles, Chief Executive David Laing, Chair

This year we were pleased to have been awarded the third bespoke Quality Accreditation Framework for Community Foundations, which is a quality mark with standards recognised by the charity commission.

Matching resources with need Our Surviving Winter campaign raised £30,377 It is estimated that over 4 million households live in fuel poverty across the UK. Your donations along with funds from NCC Warm Homes enabled us to distribute over £30,000 to support the core work of 12 community groups working with older and vulnerable people in our county who demonstrably needed extra support. Those who are living alone or feeling isolated. These groups are committed to supporting those most in need by providing social activities that have a positive impact on helping relieve the isolation and loneliness that many older people experience, particularly through the winter months. Our grants helped groups identify those in most need, they helped provide hot meals, companionship, advice and support. Your donations are used where they have a significant impact. Here’s what some of our recipients told us: “With the funding we were able to work with volunteer energy advisors who provided advice, information and support to 70 older and vulnerable people affected by the cold winter.

Northampton Association for the Blind used the Surviving Winter grant to help fund the Enable service. This provides help, advice and support, usually in the home on aspects of living with sight loss from daily living skills to maintaining physical, mental and general health and wellbeing. “85% of our clients are elderly many living alone, without social support or family networks and many at risk of living in a cold environment by not switching the heating on to save money, not being confident to make a hot drink or generally struggling to manage on their own. In the region of 450 elderly and vulnerable people received support, with visits from community support workers who gave advice and ongoing support.” Serve Rushden were able to assist in all aspects of organising the transition of the sleeping arrangements from upstairs to downstairs for a gentleman living in the Rushden area. The sister of the gentleman said: “I am so relieved we had people there that could help us. We are alone with no family and could never have done it by ourselves. Thank you again for the heater you brought us, my brother can sleep much more comfortably downstairs now.”

“We worked with health experts from partner agencies to help people understand the links between fuel poverty and poor health, making them aware of the help that is available to ensure they keep warm and well. This project gave easy and simple methods of reducing fuel bills, reducing energy use and keeping warm.” Deepa Bakrania, Dostiyo

Northamptonshire food poverty network Northamptonshire food poverty network has continued to build on its activities to tackle food poverty in the county including holding a Food Poverty symposium, sharing good practice and information and the launch of a short film to highlight the services of food banks and other agencies tackling poverty. The network has also started to look at work addressing food waste locally and raising awareness on how local communities and food industries can reduce waste in partnership with other agencies. Rachel McGrath said, “The rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits are causing more and more people to come to food banks for help.”

The N100 Fund awarded £8,822 to five groups through the N100 grant giving panel. This enabled the support of projects including a bereavement counselling service, nutrition and play scheme for young parents, holiday activities for families on a low income, recreational activities for young people and a local women’s refuge. “The N100 grant enabled us to implement our Food ‘n’ Fun project

where children attended Food ‘n’ Fun sessions each week and learned

how to make and bake a variety of quick and healthy meals. The children learned how to make these meals from scratch and they took the recipes home and shared with their families.

“Carrying on the healthy theme, while the food was cooking youth

workers taught the children how to play traditional playground games

to encourage them to be active and work up an appetite. After lunch the children enjoyed a slower paced art and craft session linked to the food they had cooked earlier.”

Making an impact in 2014 Our approach to impact came from two key aims; firstly to build the monitoring and evaluation skills of the grassroots community groups that we fund on behalf of a range of donors and secondly to be able to have an impact tool that could help evidence and demonstrate the value of funding local groups. Previously we had evidenced our impact in terms of numbers of beneficiaries and volunteers supported through groups, anecdotal stories and project visits. Now we are able to ‘deep mine’ the impact of grants awarded and we can record this information in a smart and efficient way. Being able to capture the information enables us to also positively profile the value of the voluntary and community sector and its role in economic and cultural regeneration. We have formed an impact committee which will enable the Foundation to reflect on the performance of grant making delivery to educate, celebrate achievements and identify challenges. From this year Northamptonshire Community Foundation will also be working in partnership with Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire to better support the groundwork for voluntary and community activity to thrive in local communities. This will create opportunities for new groups and projects to help provide local solutions to the issues that affect our communities. Whether you are an individual, company, charitable trust or statutory organisation, Northamptonshire Community Foundation can help you make a lasting impact on an issue you feel passionate about. Making a lasting difference Community First is a matched funding scheme exclusively for Community Foundations that provides a great incentive for both new and existing donors. In the past year we have raised an impressive £594,000 with contributions from the Margaret Giffen Charitable Trust, the John Armitage Trust, Rachel’s Fund and the Wellingborough Relief in Need Fund. The matched scheme provided an additional £297,000, a real boost that will deliver grants to smaller, grassroots community groups across our county. Giving locally has never been more effective, with match funding, gift aid and tax rebates an initial donation can be significantly increased, allowing a donor to create a fund and give to the areas they are passionate about. “We are proud to work with several partners and this partnership work is key to our on-going success. Thanks to these relationships we are able to build a sustainable source of support.

Barry Rogers, Partner at Tollers and Chair of trustees, the Margaret Giffen Charitable Trust said, “As a Charitable Trust it can be difficult for the trustees to locate unregulated and smaller groups who would benefit from our support. The Foundation provides an effective means of accessing such groups and comfort that appropriate ‘due diligence’ has been undertaken.”

“Our donors recognise that their unique fund, supporting causes in line with the brand, or close to the hearts of staff, is an asset to the current business and an investment in financial sustainability. Being seen as a positive influence in the local area is important and businesses increasingly recognise the critical role of CSR policies to their overall marketing strategies.” Victoria Miles, Chief Executive

Making a lasting difference We have been working closely with the trustees of the Northampton Queen’s Institute Relief in Sickness Fund to establish a named fund through its transfer to Northamptonshire Community Foundation. The fund will remain restricted with a focus on health and well-being for the people and communities across the county. We have been able to increase the fund from £1 million to £1.5 million under the Community First endowment challenge. “Running a small charity is becoming increasingly onerous, with all the rules and regulations now facing us and the Northamptonshire Community Foundation has the professional support and expertise to enable it to deal with the daily management issues that confront us. The Foundation has expanded enormously since it was founded twelve years ago and has been a huge success story. The trustees of the Queen’s Institute are confident that this charity which has done so much to help the health of the inhabitants of Northampton will continue to prosper under the guidance of the team at the Community Foundation.” Michael Orton-Jones, Former Chairman, Northampton Queen’s Institute Relief in Sickness Fund

The Northamptonshire Community Foundation

Bringing donors and community groups together During the year we organise events, visits and grant panels providing opportunities for our donors to meet volunteers and representatives from community groups across the county. Our Annual Awards evening is a time to celebrate the work and achievements of our community groups and share these stories with donors and supporters of the Community Foundation. The official launch of the Northamptonshire food poverty network took place in October 2013. Lord Compton welcomed over 100 attendees brought together from across the county and including local charities, businesses and public agencies. The event showcased how local charities and food banks have been working together to tackle food poverty here in our county. A private tour of Althorp, donated to Northamptonshire Parkinson’s Charity auction was gifted to the Foundation by the bid winner David Laing. Earl Spencer who donated the prize, personally hosted the tour for our guests who also enjoyed a tour of the gardens with Althorp’s head gardener.

Throughout the year we visited many community groups including: The Northampton Food Bank, Blackthorn Good Neighbours, Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire, Northamptonshire Country Centre, The Phoenix Resource Centre and Equata. Fund Development Manager, Naomi Butters, accompanied by N100 members Janet and Kevin Marchand, took the opportunity to see community group Corby Deep Roots, Tall Trees when they performed at the Oakley Vale Community Centre, Corby.

Chairman, David Laing, generously sponsored two tables for the Foundation at the annual Rockingham Castle International Horse Trials where N100 members and their guests met for an enjoyable day. Trustee and High Sheriff Anne Burnett hosted a private dinner for guests of the Foundation at the Judges’ Lodgings.

Why I volunteer “Knowing the amazing work achieved by Northamptonshire Community Foundation, it was not hard when the invitation came to become a volunteer grants advisor. “In the time I have been in this role I have been able to work with the Community Foundation team who have a passion and understanding of grant giving including specific advice. I work with trustees and other volunteer grant advisors who bring a breadth of understanding to meetings. I have learnt about the numerous projects and activities mainly run by volunteers that need some form of funding. “Being a volunteer grants advisor has given me an insight into the amount of time given by others in order to support projects that ‘fill gaps’ or enhance activities already in place. “Volunteering with Northamptonshire Community Foundation is very rewarding. Along with others I have a strong feeling that I am playing a part to improve lives in Northamptonshire. To me it is a privilege to have a role to support others through the trustees, other volunteer grant advisors and Community Foundation staff.”

“Being a trustee is an incredibly rewarding role and one which I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to experience. Living and working in Northamptonshire I wanted to be able to use my professional knowledge, experience and contacts in a way that was not for my own benefit or that of my employer but for a completely different purpose. “It is important to me that I contribute toward the community and the county in which I live. Prior to becoming a trustee I had always struggled to find time to do that whilst working. Being a trustee allows me to work with the Community Foundation without impacting on my professional life. “Personally I feel it adds balance and perspective to my life. I enjoy playing a small part in the valuable work and assistance that the Community Foundation gives in Northamptonshire.”

Why I give “We joined the Northamptonshire Community Foundation,

Northamptonshire 100 because we wanted to be part of a network where we could connect with others who feel passionate about

Northamptonshire and have the added bonus of being part of a collective giving circle.

How to give

There are many ways to support us whether you are an individual, company, trust or local authority, we can provide the solution to your local charitable giving. We will help you make a lasting impact to the issues you care about across our communities. As a supporter, you can see for yourself the difference your support is making and we make giving simple, safe, tax efficient and cost effective. We make philanthropy affordable, easy to manage and as visible or anonymous as each donor requires.

We offer a bespoke philanthropic service and can give advice as to where your donation will make the maximum impact in the community.

Leaving a legacy

“After being an N100 member for two years, a named fund felt like a

“This year I have been fortunate enough to inherit some money, because I

feel so passionately about the work the Foundation supports, I decided to set up a named fund in my daughter’s name. The fund was matched through

Community First which means I have been able to create a bigger amount in the fund and leave a lasting legacy.

“Working with the Foundation has meant I’ve been able to choose the type of projects I would like to support and know the distribution of funds is in safe hands.” Alison Newcomb

We recognise that a legacy to Northamptonshire Community Foundation is a special kind of gift and all gifts, regardless of their size make a difference and help future generations. A gift will be used in accordance with your wishes and if you have a specific purpose in mind, we encourage you to discuss this with us. Your solicitor can best advise you and will ensure your intentions are recorded accurately and fully.

Our funds Our long term endowed funds allow our fund holders to choose to give across a broad range of causes or to direct their giving to a specific cause or issue. Many companies work with us in order to reach smaller charities and community groups within our county and there are two ways to direct your donation, either through an endowed fund or a flow through fund. Whichever option you prefer, we are utterly flexible and pride ourselves on setting up bespoke funds that perfectly suit our supporters’ wishes.
