II. REPORT SYNOPSIS Biochips Biochip or gene micro array is a small square of glass embedded with millions of strands of DNA, produced by using microlithography technique. Biochips were invented by gene scientist Stephen Fodor. Development of biochip utilizes multiple technologies such as sensor technology, micro arraying, signal processing, and biochemistry etc. The key part in the Biochip is the sensing component analysis system which transducts the actual sensing event into computer language and then analyzes the result into human-readable output. Multidisciplinary approach is regarded as the hindrance to the development of Biochip. The first commercially available biochip “gene chip” was introduced by Affymetrix and is used to detect genes related to tumors (p53) and breast cancer (BRCA1and BRCA2). A biochip is a combination of micro fabrication technology and life sciences in a miniaturized device. Small enough to fit the palm of the hand the so-called "lab on a chip" or micro total analysis systems (µTAS) employs miniaturization of biological separation and assay techniques to an extent that multiple and complex analyses can be done on a chip. Fundamentally, biochips are computer-chip look-alikes intended to speedily, reliably, and inexpensively perform biochemical procedures that together constitute a medical test. The far slower, more cumbersome, more expensive laboratory equipment can be replaced by their miniaturization and automation of laboratory procedures Their current applications lie principally in the analysis of genes for defects or sequence variations. They may soon facilitate screening of molecules for potential usefulness as drugs. The immediate goal is to enable them to serve point-of-care diagnosis. Biochips are similar to semiconductors, except that instead of having electronic circuits, they have biological material, DNA or RNA or protein, attached to the substrate which can be glass, plastic or silicon. A biochip is a collection of miniaturized test sites arranged on a solid substrate that permits many tests to be performed at the same time, in order to achieve higher throughput and speed. Surface area comparable to that of human finger nail has the potential to perform many biological reactions like decoding the genes, like a computer chip which can perform millions of mathematical operations in seconds. Thus, biochips may be regarded as engineered systems that effectively bring together three important and dominant technologies of the 20th century - microelectronics, biotechnology and information technology.

BIOCHIPS - THE INDUSTRY OUTLOOK Global Biochips market is projected to grow at 21.82% compounded annually from 2005 through 2020. This growth would be driven especially by application of biochips in Clinical Diagnostics, Drug Development. Biochips are expected to increase the number of drugs released by reducing the time involved in the drug development process, leading to savings in time and costs. Biochips are becoming an essential part of drug discovery process, bolstering efficiency and accuracy. The North America, the leading market (49.1% of global market share in 2006) for biochips presently is projected to manage the leading position throughout the analysis period with its share dropping to 46.48% by 2012. Due to the cost advantage and access to the latest technology, Asia-Pacific is emerging as the fastest growing (23.42% during 2005-2012) market for biochips. This region is potentially well poised to lay a significant role in development of biochips in the near future. Europe and Japan are expected to gain market shares while the North America may lose market dominance.

IV. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH The biotechnology industry is growing at an astonishingly rapid rate. The development of biochips has brought incalculable changes to it .The influence of this percolates into other streams of knowledge such as genomics, pharmaceuticals, computational biology, and proteomics. These new developments are giving hope to research scientists to look into the intricate biochemical processes that takes place inside the confines of cells. The research studies have a goal to reach in the upliftment of mankind through the eradication of diseases which plague human society. The semiconductor industry has been steadily perfecting the science of microminiaturization. The merging of these two fields in recent years has enabled biotechnologists to begin packing their traditionally bulky sensing tools into smaller and smaller spaces; onto so-called the world of biochips is opening new vistas into diverse fields from the diagnosis of diseases to combating bioterrorism. Screening of a large number of determinants is being analyzed at the shortest of time. Biotechnology is believed to have immense potential to bring about great changes. The research into the biochemical functions of cells, genes and proteins in the body of man is assuming a role of bringing solace to people. Through early diagnosis of diseases, targeting the right medicine in the right dose depending on the genetic makeup of the individual and even being able to identify the allergens by means of simple biochemical analyses. The majority of microarrays are presently comprised of glass or plastics which is designed in such a fashion that it is detected by optical sensors. Now the revolutionary concept is to usher in semiconductor chips that are combined with biology. This will open up new pathways for the advancement of science in the future. The concept of a computer chip which is low cost and at the same time reliable, appearing in all respects like a computer chip is no doubt a captivating proposition. Through this we see miniaturization, automation and acceleration of time consuming procedures involving bulky laboratory equipments. Apart from this the cost factor is quite favorable when compared with traditional methods. The uses of this new concept will

be to analyze genetic material to pin point the inherent defects, to investigate the sequence variations for purposes of diagnosis, forensics and therapeutics. Biological fluids could also be analyzed for diagnostic and therapeutic conclusions. A study of intermolecular interactions with the specific goal of drug lead screening is also a noteworthy potentiality. Another area which will be benefited is the assay chemistry of micro fluids. The minutest volume of liquids could be investigated and ultra-sensitive detections will be made possible. The advance in chip manufacturing processes for the exclusive use of bio-assay purposes is all set to bring in a complete radicalization in the developments in this field. Large corporate bodies are already evincing keen interest in the vast potential of biochips. They would like to use it as a point-of-care tool for diagnosis. They also intend to utilize it as a throughput screening platform for investigative drug lead identification. Researchers are putting maximum effort in developing a standardized chip platform that can find universal application similar to the modern day computer chips. DNA micro array a form of the biochip has revolutionalized biological enquiry This will eventually lead to simultaneous assessment of the various levels of gene expression, polymorphism and functional genomics also known as transcriptomic variation. This could all be accomplished experimentally while undertaking a complete survey of the genome in a particular organism. The main evolutionary consequence of the DNA microarray is the prognostic or more pointedly the diagnostic value of the biochip. Molecular biology has been revolutionized by DNA microarray. Now we are about to witness how the biochip is going to revolutionize molecular diagnostics. Broadly speaking the biochip is a measuring device that has a built-in recognition component. It could also work with devices that use the traditional techniques of microlithography and microarraying technologies. Biochips are similar to biosensors and only differ in the use of microlithography fabrication techniques in their production. Biochips are made up of microarrays which have high, medium or low density bioelectronics chips and capillary agarose chips. In short it is observed that microarrays are biochips but all biochips are not microarrays. If looked at from another point of view we could describe the biochip as an engineered device or system having a chip component and a biologically derived component. Thus we see that in this simplistic theory there lies a dominant theme which will capture the imagination of man in the 21st century. This theme brings together the three major juggernauts of the 20th century namely microelectronics, biotechnology and information technology. These technologies are wide and varied and converge to form a new union. The chip substrate may appear to be as simple as the glass slide of a microscope or it could project itself as complex as a fully integrated microfluidic system having association with microelectronics and MEMS devices. The biologically derived component could be molecular, organelle, cellular or even tissue based. The biologically derived component may be molecular (enzymes, antibodies, DNA), organelle (mitochondria, cell wall), cellular (neuronal cells, islet cells), or tissue (liver slices) based. With this diversity of options, biochips have emerged as a major field of study, active product development and commercial activity
