II. REPORT SYNOPSIS Every living being in the universe needs protein to grow. While it is true that water contributes to the largest percentage of body weight, protein is also an important contributory factor to it. This is because protein is present in every organ and muscle of the body. Protein that is present in the body does not come only from food that is ingested. In fact ingested protein is first broken down into amino acids that are then broken down into specific proteins necessary for growth. Enzymes and hormones present in the body that are responsible for specific body functions are also proteins. Amino acids are required by the body to carry out different functions that even include the functioning of the brain. Proteins are also responsible for activation and utilization of other macro and micro nutrients in the body. The amino acid can be described as a group of organic molecules that comprise of an organic R group or a side chain, which presents a solitary characteristic to the amino acid, an acidic carboxyl group represented as -COOH and a basic amino group represented as -NH2. If two or more amino acids combine the combination is known as a peptide. Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids that are linked and attached to each other with peptide bonds. There are twenty-eight such amino acids that play a vital role in maintaining the human body. While the body receives about twenty percent of these amino acids from the diet known as essential amino acids, eighty percent are made in the body itself known as non-essential amino acids. The liver is the organ responsible for the manufacture of these amino acids. All amino acids work together to provide the body with a continuous supply of nutrients that are necessary for it to carry out its functions. When the body does not receive sufficient amino acids from the food eaten, it affects its functioning leading to poor health. On the other hand too much protein in the body is also harmful. As the body makes its own proteins, a byproduct called ammonia is also produced in the liver as a waste product. Too much protein in the body results in high amount of ammonia as well. The kidneys and liver then have to work harder to flush this excess ammonia out of the body. Today amino acids can be taken as a supplement that is available commercially. Amino acid supplements are usually made from animal protein, vegetable protein, or yeast. While almost all amino acids can be produced in two forms – the L and D form, it is not so in the case of glycine. L and D basically refer to manner in which the amino acid is wound up. L is the left winding amino acid and D is the right winding amino acid. Human amino acids have been found to be the L type and this is usually the preferred supplement as well.
Importance of Amino Acids In dietary supplement programs amino acids are added and given due importance. Amino acids are said to be the building blocks for good health as they are comprised of essential proteins. Conversely it could be pointed out that the very existence of proteins is dependent on the specific combination of amino acids. When amino acids get reduced or are found to be missing, there is a commensurate reduction in the

effectiveness of other amino acids. The human body requires sufficient protein intake for almost every bit of development. It could be for healthy body fluids, hair growth, nails, glands, organs, tendons, ligaments and strong muscles. Skin and hair are provided with a protective coating. Bones and teeth attain their robustness through proteins. Proteins help in the regeneration of tissue. The water content and acid-balance is regulated through the presence of proteins. Antibodies are also produced in the body with the help of proteins.

III. MARKET DYNAMICS MARKET OVERVIEW Market Growth Factors There has been a substantial increase in the demand for amino acids in the last thirty years or so. There is a steady 5-10% growth rate in the market. It is estimated that in that last ten years the market demand for amino acids has doubled. L-lysine, which is used as an additive in animal feed, has shown a sharp increase in demand. It is estimated that the global market for L-lysine has increased almost 20 times in the past twenty years. There are other amino acids that are now available in the market such as L-threonine, Laspartate and L-phenylalanine. Specifically, L-aspartate and L-phenylalanine are used for the synthesis of a sweetener known as Aspartame. Among the amino acids available in the market, L-Glutamate is still the most popular one followed by Llysine and D,L-methionine. The prices of amino acids are often affected by the dynamics in the market. The increase in the efficiency of the fermentation technology can lead to the development of cheaper goods and thereby increase the overall demand. Subsequently, there is bound to be large-scale production of these products which will lower the costs even more. However, despite these trends in the market, the supply of amino acids such as L-lysine to be used as feed additives will compete with soybean meal which is a natural source of L-lysine. Therefore, there are bound to be fluctuations in the market demand for amino acids based on the yield of crops. The quantity of production of amino acids is also a determinant of its cost. Amino acids that are produced on a large-scale are bound to be inexpensive. The price factor also plays a role in the location of the production plants. The location of the production plants is governed by the chief dynamics of price of the carbon source and the local market. There are large L-glutamate production plants in different parts of the world specifically in the countries of the Far East such as Thailand and Indonesia. However, as far as the location of the production plants of L-lysine are concerned, the situation is different. Since one-third of the global market for this product is concentrated in North America, one-third of the L-lysine production plants are located there. The location of these plants in this area is also driven by the availability of maize as a feedstock material for the process of fermentation. Most of the time, the companies that are producers of L-lysine are linked to the maize milling industry in various capacities either as producers, in joint ventures or as suppliers of cheap sugar. This is indicative of the fact that commercialization of amino acid production is undergoing rapid change and growth under the influence of the various global interactions. Presently more and more people are making use of amino acids to maintain their figure. Beauty conscious people such as fashion models are resorting to them. Segmentation by Application Feed Additives Amino Acids in Animal Nutrition Intensive research is being carried on in the realm of nutrition of farm animals and amino acid metabolism. In 1994 a book was published entitled Amino Acids in Farm Animal Nutrition. During the period since its publication a lot of progress has been made and now the subject of amino acid nutrition encompasses a more comprehensive outlook. It now recognizes a more wide range of animals which includes companion animals. In the latest version of the book the addition of more chapters renders strength to the first version and the introduction of articles by authors brings fresh vision and concepts on pets such as dogs and cats. The thematically organized book has an addition of chapters by way of a general nature and in the introduction part of the book. Several animal species have been covered and the chapters give a new perspective to animals that include ruminants, poultry and pigs.
Food Ingredients Monosodium Glutamate Glutamate is a free amino acid found in ample quantities within the cytoplasm of bacteria. Despite this, the glutamate producers need to ensure that glutamate produced by the bacteria is more than the quantities

that are required for normal metabolic activities of the bacteria, and the bacteria eventually excretes this excess amount of glutamate into the culture broth. Even though researchers have put in forty years to understand the mechanism that prompts C. glutamicum to produce and excrete glutamate, the exact mechanism of the bioprocess is yet to be understood clearly. This research has, however, indicated involvement of some specific physiological reactions in the process. These traits include a conspicuous reduction in Îą- ketoglutarate dehydrogenase activity during production of glutamate, biotin auxotrophy of glutamate producing strains of bacteria, and increased tendency of the bacteria for exporting glutamate, possibly through a specific transporter.
MSG - Industrial Production Process MSG is produced through various processes by industries. The processes differ in each company manufacturing MSG. These processes are exclusive and proprietary in nature. There are a few general patterns in these processes. A fed-batch type process is used most often. Fermentation forms an integral part of this process. Sugar is added when the fermentation process is on, unlike in batch process, where all ingredients are present when the process starts.

A range of products are in the market including age reversing skin creams, collagen fillers, anti-wrinkle solutions, and many more to give them a face lift. Recent findings by researchers associated with skin care industry indicate that certain amino acids may prove to be effective in anti-aging. The latest product available for consumers is amino acid formulations that can combat aging process. But consumers of these varieties of skin care products containing amino acids must take enough precaution to discriminate between good and poor quality products. Some have been developed after intense research, while others are not.
Amino Acids in Cosmetology There is an increasing trend at present to incorporate amino acids in body soaps, rinses and shampoos. Such products that contain amino acids do certainly have advantages to improve the general fitness of the body. Therefore the importance of amino acids in cosmetics is heartening to women. Among NMFs or natural moisturizing factors amino acids do find an important niche. As the epidermal cells die they turn into the stratum corneum. Thus the proteins in the cells suffer degradation to amino acids and get moved to the stratum corneum. Approximately 50% of the NMF in the skin is comprised of amino acids and PCA or pyrrolidone carboxylic acid. PCA is extracted from glutamate which is an amino acid. The cosmetic ingredient known as collagen is said to contain several various amino acids and is thus the product of choice to keep the skin moisturized and supple.
Amino Acids and Environment Soaps and detergents are used and the discharge finds its way into sewage. This needs to be biodegradable. Amino Acid Supplements Under certain conditions, taking supplements containing amino acids becomes essential. They are usually available commercially in combination with multivitamin formulas. These amino acids are prepared in the pharmaceutical industry by hydrolyzing animal protein, vegetable protein, or yeast protein. The amino acid supplements should be in L-forms as found in the body. However, taking such amino acid formulations should not be continued for a prolonged period. Preferably, one can take them for two months, discontinue for the next two months, and then resume. This is, according to researchers, to avoid accumulation of certain amino acids to toxic levels. Therefore, the amino acid supplements should be taken only as per the specific directions of one’s physician. It is also important that such amino acid supplements should not be administered to a child. Amino acids that are present in their free form do not require digestion and are absorbed immediately into the body. However, this is not the case with amino acids that are taken as a supplement. When taking amino acid supplements it is best to take vitamin C or ascorbic acid and vitamin B 6 as well, as these vitamins aid in the absorption of the amino acid. Another factor to be noted is that amino acid supplements must not be taken in large doses, as this could result in toxicity thereby causing harm to the body.
