II. REPORT SYNOPSIS Biotechnology - A Brief Introduction Biotechnology is considered as a most promising technology which is very complex in nature and capable of taking mankind to new heights. In the next few decades it is expected to facilitate large-scale technological advancements. This advancement is expected to be of greater prominence and pervasive than the developments achieved by the IT field. The related developments of other fields such as life sciences are improving the opportunities of biotechnology. The combination of genomics, proteomics, biology and bioinformatics is considered as a driving force for the development of biotechnology. Some of the important areas which require to be focused for the comprehensive development of the biotech field are generation of excellent opportunities, proper wealth creation practices, expansion of commercial prospects and enhancing of industrial developments.
Biotechnology in India In India, the requirement for maintaining a separate department for the development and intensification of biology and biotechnology research was felt in the early 1980s. The government established a special institutional agenda for the development of biology and biotechnology in the country. Some of the governmental research organizations such as University Grants Commission (UGC), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR),Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science & Technology offer great support in the development of modern biology and biotechnology in India. The early major biotech organizations in India were Biocon, Panacea Biotech, Bharath Biotech, Bangalore Genei (which exploited recombinant DNA technology but not for human use) and the Serum Institute of India. Lot of research work carried out by the government organizations at that time was very useful for private and budding biotech companies. CCMB (Centre for cellular and molecular biology) located in Hyderabad played a major role in developing the hepatitis B vaccine for Shantha Biotech. Delhi based Centre for Biochemical Technology (CBT), a lab for developing and making different types of biochemicals, was established in 1997. This later became Frontier Biology Laboratory by reorienting its research activities. The research at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bangalore maintains international standards in research. Post genome sequencing, and the enthusiastic interests of venture capitalists, the biotech scene in India too has become very vibrant. Biocon was the first biotech company started in India (1978). The later period was wait and watch until 1997. Avestha Gengraine was set up in the year 1998, Strand Genomics in the year 2000 and Metahelix and Gangagen in the year 2001. Once Pharma companies started investing in biotech companies, there has been a boom in the field of biotechnology. India has strong biotechnological assets and human resources.
Highly qualified, efficient, and experienced pool of scientists and engineers; and exceptional R & D and cost effective manufacturing makes India a favorite market for the development of biotechnological fields.

Small and big national research laboratories employ thousands of scientists.
Approximately 300 college level educational centers and training establishments offer diplomas, degrees, and Masters degrees in bio-informatics, biotechnology, genetics and related biological sciences.
These colleges and educational institutions are responsible for churning out approximately a lakh biotechnological aspirants each year.
About 100 medical colleges cater to 16, 000 medical practitioners each year.
The vast knowledge pool of India further produces approximately 25,000 postgraduates in the field of biotechnology.
The number of people acquiring doctorates in biosciences and engineering is around 1500 each year.
The field of biotechnology has the potential to convert the vast biological resources present in the country into economic wealth and employment opportunities. The development of innovative products and availability of exceptional services can impact the renewable resources and bring about greater effectiveness in industrial practices. It can also restrict environmental degradation and provide more biobased economy to the country. The main problem with the Indian agricultural sector is the uncertainty of the rains and the requirement to produce more farm products to meet the requirements of the people from diminishing per capita arable land. The field of Biotechnology has the potential to accept this challenge and ensure the livelihood security of millions of agricultural families by following technological farming techniques. The efforts put in by the field in the last few decades have won applause from both the public and private sectors. These agencies have come forward to promote life sciences and biotechnology. The support rendered by these organizations has led to significant progress in the areas of R&D, HRD and development of infrastructure. The commencement of product patent formulation in early 2005 has enabled development of quality products and services in the field.
Research & Development Activities in the Field of Biotechnology In India, the R&D in the field of science and technology is being promoted and undertaken with the government’s intervention and sponsorships. There are various governmental research wings responsible for the enduring research in this field. Some of the government organizations playing a major role in biotechnology development in India:
Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR)
Centre for cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)
Department of Biotechnology (DBT)
Department of Science and Technology (DST)
Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
University Grants Commission (UGC)
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR)
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) UGC: Responsible for release of grants, determination, coordination and maintenance of standards
Department of Biotechnology: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is promoting the development of specialised degrees, such as MSc in Biotechnology or Bio-informatics in several institutions. The State

Governments are responsible for the establishment of State Universities and colleges, and provide plan grants for their development and non-plan grants for their maintenance. The introduction of the patent regime has encouraged a number of private institutions in the research front. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR): CSIR is a vast research organization in the governmental sector with approximately 40 laboratories and 81 field stations, numerous extension centers and regional centers spread across the country. The prime role is to carry out R&D in the various disciplines of biotechnology and life sciences. The organization consists of approximately 22,000 highly qualified professionals capable of carrying out multidisciplinary research activities. Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR): ICAR is involved in the research activities to promote science and technology programs in the agricultural sector. Like CSIR, it also has a number of institutes, national research centers, and project directorates. Apart form these, it is also involved in collaboration with the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) all over the country to study and understand the agricultural related problems of the individual states. This organization has an overall manpower of about 29,000 people, of which nearly 6,500 are involved in active research programs. The SAUs present in each state collectively have manpower of approximately 25,000 scientists who are actively involved in research, training and extension education. Further 5,500 scientists are involved in the various other projects looked after by ICAR.

III. MARKET DYNAMICS
Market Overview Biotechnology has great promise in India. Demand and availability of bio fertilizers is expected to increase as they are inexpensive, and are formed from renewable energy resources i.e. cultivable life forms compared to chemical fertilizers that are known to harm the environment and exhaust non-renewable energy sources. Biofertilizer production does not result in any toxic substances released into environment. Hence they are safe for both crops and the farmer, whereas production of chemical fertilizers causes environmental pollution. Unlike chemical fertilizers which lose their nutrient value with one crop, Biofertilizers are more long lasting as they improve the yields of subsequent crops as well, reducing the cost of agricultural produce. India’s energy needs will be met in the future through the use of biofuels reducing the dependence on the imported oil. By use of biofuels there is a reduction in emission of harmful pollutants i.e. reduction in green house emissions, thus leading to the growth of the Biofuel industry. Bio polymers though now account for a small share in the market, are expected to show an upward swing in their growth as they are found to have applications in many areas such as, food industry, medicine and material Science. India’s energy needs will be met through the use of biofuels in the near future.
Indian Market Analysis Indian Biotechnology market is projected to reach about US$ XX.XX billion by 2020 from a market of US$ XX.XX billion in 2015, and is estimated to reach XX.XX billion by 2012 growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.XX % during the analysis period 2005-2020.
