II. REPORT SYNOPSIS Solvents Solvents may be found in any of the three states and are capable of dissolving solutes which may be in any of the three states. The dissolution of a solute in the solvent results in the formation of a solution. This solution can again be dissolved in a particular amount of the solvent which has been used to form it and this dissolution is temperature specific. Solvents may be organic or inorganic in nature. Organic solvents find more general uses than inorganic ones. Organic solvents are used in chemical synthesis. The other uses of organic solvents include dry cleaning e.g. tetrachloroethylene, paint thinning e.g. turpentine, toluene, nail polish as well as nail polish removers for e.g. acetone, methyl acetate and ethyl acetate, glue solvents, spot removers for e.g. hexane and petrol ether, detergents e.g. citrus terpenes, perfumes e.g. ethanol.
Ethylene Ethylene or ethene is an organic compound, is the simplest of alkenes and is also the simplest unsaturated hydrocarbon after acetylene. It is represented by the formula C2H4 or H2C=CH2. It is a colorless, flammable gas with a sweet and musky odor in its pure form. Ethene finds use in the chemical industry and its production on a world–wide scale is greater than any other organic compound. Ethylene is oxidized to produce ethylene oxide which is used to produce surfactants and detergents by the process of ethoxylation. Ethylene oxide is used to produce ethylene glycol, higher molecular weight glycols and glycol ethers by hydrolysis.
Poly Ethers Poly ethers are polymers where the main chain has an ether functional group and there is more than one ether group. The nomenclature of ethers is based on the importance of the end-groups .The term Glycols is used for those low to medium molar mass polymers, which have a hydroxyl group as its end group which is an important determinant of its properties.
Dimethyl Ether Dimethyl ether or DME is the simplest ether and is a colorless gas. It is chemically methoxy methane and is represented as CH3OCH3. It is a starting compound for a large number of organic compounds and an aerosol propellant. DME can be synthesized through direct synthesis and indirect synthesis
Ethylene Oxide Ethylene Oxide is a building block of chemistry as this compound along with its derivatives is used to make many of the products that are used daily. Ethylene oxide is used for sterilization of medical devices, supplies and healthcare products like bandages. Ethylene oxide is essential in the manufacture of detergents, thickeners, solvents and chemicals like ethylene glycol, ethanol amines, simple and complex glycols, polyglycol ethers and other compounds.

Derivatives of Ethylene Oxide Polyethylene Glycol Polyethylene glycol, shortly referred to as PEG, is a polymer of ethylene oxide and possesses two OH [hydroxyl] groups in the terminus. Since the monomer ethylene glycol is also known as ethylene oxide or oxyethylene, PEG is also known by other names such as polyethylene oxide [PEO] or polyoxyethylene [POE]. PEG of different molecular weights has varying physical properties. This feature enables the application of PEG in the manufacture of a wide variety of pharmaceutical products. The addition of PEG to skin creams facilitates easy dispersion of the product over the skin when applied. PEG3350 is used as a laxative to help patients suffering from constipation For sustained delivery of a proteinaceous drug, it is combined with PEG so that it will remain in the blood stream for a prolonged period. In the laboratory preparation of monoclonal antibodies, PEG is used as an agent to promote fusion between B-lymphocytes and myeloma cells. In pesticide formulations, PEG finds use as anti-dusting substance.
Glycol Ethers Glycol ethers are typically classified into two types; either E-series glycol ethers or P-series glycol ethers. While E-series glycol ethers derive their name from ethylene oxide, the classification of P-series glycol ethers is based on propylene oxide. Glycol ethers are mostly utilized as solvents for producing paints, inks and cleaning solutions. Glycol ethers are useful for an extensive range of purposes in a wide spectrum of industries ranging from coatings, aeronautics, printing, electronics and others. Here are some of the notable functions of glycol ethers:
Polyethylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether (PEG DME) PEG DME is an aprotic solvent. That is, it does not contain dissociable H + and therefore cannot donate this proton. It has no hydroxyl functionality. Glymes exhibit thermal stability and miscibility with water as well as organic solvents with the exception of butyl glymes. Exhibit 1. IV. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH Polyethylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether (PEG DME) PEG DME is the acronym for polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The dimethyl ethers of PEG are often referred to as ‘polyglymes’ The commercial names of PEG DME are NHD and Genosorb. Synonyms: Dimethyl polyethylene glycol, PEG DME and Dimethoxy Polyethylene Glycol PEG DME is an aprotic solvent. That is, it does not contain dissociable H+ and therefore cannot donate this proton. It has no hydroxyl functionality. Glymes exhibit thermal stability and miscibility with water as well as organic solvents with the exception of butyl glymes. The inorganic solvents like NaBH4 and NaF are readily soluble in glymes. Non-toxicity and low inflammability are other merits of the glymes.

POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL DIMETHYL ETHER – OUTLOOK Global value market for PEG DME is projected to reach about US$ xx.xx million by 2020, from an estimated US$ xx.xx million in 2012, growing at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of xx.xx % (2005-2020).. North America is estimated as the largest global market for PEG DME, with a share of xx.xx % (2012) valued at US$ xx.xx million and is projected to reach US$ xx.xx million by 2020, retaining its position with a share of xx.xx %. Europe is projected to be the second largest (xx.xx % of market share in 2010), while Asia-Pacific is projected to be the fastest growing (xx.xx % during 2005-2020) market. Global volume market for PEG DME is projected to reach about xx.xx thousand metric tons by 2020, from an estimated xx.xx thousand metric tons in 2012. The market is growing at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of xx.xx % during the analysis period (2005-2020). Global PEG DME market in 2012 was estimated at xx.xx thousand metric tons. In the previous decade, there was an impressive growth of P-series glycol ethers, derived from propylene oxide, in the glycol ethers market and constituted 35% of the glycol ethers market in 1999. It is for this reason, though the demand for glycol ethers, especially in paints and coatings, has attained a sustained growth, the demand for E-series glycol for these products has shown a downward trend. This trend is likely to spill over into the next decade for two major reasons: 1. E-series glycol ethers will continue to be more and more substituted by P-series glycol ethers and various other solvents and 2. Paints and coatings products will continue to swift towards VOC (volatile organic compounds) and zero-VOC preparations…….
