2. REPORT SYNOPSIS Stem cells are highly capable of dividing into different types of cells in the body. The stem cell theory implies the unlimited division of the cell in order to replenish other cells of a live person or an animal. Hence the stem cell plays a role of a kind of repair system in a body. Each new cell formed is capable of converting either into a different type of cell with special features such as a brain cell or a muscle cell or remain as a stem cell. The science of stem cells is leading to evolution of cell-based therapies referred to as reparative or regenerative medicine for the treatment of diseases. The ongoing research on stem cells indicates the replenishment of damaged cells by healthy cells in adult organism and the origin of an organism through a single cell. Stem cell science is predicted to be the most promising field in Biology though it has its own share of queries and controversies. Stem cell research has picked up pace like never before now. The technology is leading to a new kind of cell-based medicine that is regenerative in nature. However, practicality and ethics dominate the ever controversial subject. Hence, it may take some more time, before a proper worldwide consensus emerges on the usage and procedures of stem cell research. While some countries approve, some oppose. Stem cell research is most likely to gather pace in countries with less regulatory controls. Of all the countries, China has the most favorable environment for research. The UK too has a strong research presence. The United States is the leader in stem cell research. However, the government controls the grants for research but places no restrictions on funds from private, state, or local government resources.

Adult Stem Cells Adult stem cells can be termed as undifferentiated cells found in isolated body parts or tissues. They possess the unique property of replenishing and undergoing self-division among themselves to produce specialized cell varieties of various body parts. The main aim of the adult stem cells in living organisms is to carry out the repair activities of the tissues that inhabit them. The term ‘somatic stem cell’ is also used by some of the scientists to express adult stem cells. The origin of embryonic stem cells is fully known, but this is not the case with adult stem cells.

Xenotransplantation The term Xenotransplantation refers to the transplantation or transferring of living cells, tissues, or organs from one species to another; for example grafting from pigs to humans. The tissues, cells, or organs that are used for the purpose are called xenografts or xenotransplants. Allotransplantation refers to transplantation that is done within the same species. Exhibit 4. 4. PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH The stem cells change to form various amazing arrangements of specific cells that constitute a human being. Stem cells of the human embryos are pluripotent (the cells give rise to various types of cells except the placental cells). Stem cells of the adult human are multipotent i.e., they develop into different types of cells. Pluripotency in adult human stem cells is not found. Human embryonic stem cells are the cells taken from a few days’ old embryo or stem cells taken from fetal tissue of more than eight weeks old. Adult embryonic stem cells are taken from adults. Aberrations in the arrangement or transformation of stem cells into specific cells results in severe birth defects or cancer. So, understanding the process of the development of stem cells helps prevent the earlier mentioned medical conditions by rectifying the anomalies. Hence, the study of stem cells proves to be useful in medical research. Research in stem cell has rapidly increased throughout the world in the previous decade. In India, the total investment in this field in India was approximately $540 million in 2010, with an annual growth rate of 15%. Presently, more than 30 institutions are performing stem cell research in India with the government investing almost $8 million in the previous two years. Stem cell research is primarily aimed at creation of tissues or organs as replacement for diseased or damaged tissues or organs. Creation of mature tissues is essential to this concept; hence researches are primarily focused on adult stem cells for treatment of diseases. Clinically, stem cells need transplantation into the affected region for growth into fresh, healthy tissues.

Further, the scope of healing inherited disorders of blood, acquired loss of bone marrow function and diseases occurring in the immune system is established. These can be successfully cured using stem cell therapies. When rigorous chemotherapy treatment or radiation therapy is imparted to cancer patients an adverse effect is created on the bone marrow leading to untimely destruction. Application of stem cell to replace the blood cells is effective in treatment of such cases. The use of stem cells has shown positive results in treatment of cases of blood cancers (leukemia), lymphoma and multiple myeloma, wherein the bone marrow gets destroyed due to radiation therapies. The latest variety of cancer that is being treated by using the stem cell transplantation is breast cancer. The latest entrant in the stem cell treatment therapy variety is the Mesenchymal stem cell. This cell has the unique ability of molding itself into the form of bone, cartilage, fat or any form of muscle. Further it can alter the immune function in some cases. This treatment has derived utmost attention and excitement in imparting treatment for muscoskeletal aberrations, cardiac disorders and irregularities pertaining to the immune system. The experiments to establish the veracity and practical applicability of these cells have rendered encouraging results. But its advantage over other existing therapies is still not proved completely. Scientists are currently involved in exploring various other applications and features of this cell. Hence it would be appropriate to address the current clinical therapy using stem cells as clinical research.
