f Shakespeare were enduring the pandemic of 2020, he might pen, “All the world’s a screen” — such is the virtual status of most human encounters these days. That’s only partially true, though, of this year’s South End Art Hop: There will be some in-person options, albeit carefully choreographed for physical distancing. At the center of this pullout is a guide to all things Hop. In addition, we pay a visit to the studios of Will Clingenpeel, who experiences color like … a vortex of kittens; and of Erin Bundock, the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Vaults. The three owners of brand-new Satellite Arts Productions explain how they’ll be lighting the Art Hop. And don’t be sad that no food trucks are allowed this year; a complete list of South End food and drink spots is within. Masks up, art on!

Will Clingenpeel in Burlington

Color Conduit

Painter Will Clingenpeel pushes beyond limits BY C H E L S E A E D G A R

S

even years ago, artist Will Clingenpeel dreamt he was hurtling face-first through a supernova of all the colors he had ever seen. When he woke up, the vision in his left eye had gone black-and-white and muddy-warped, like the view through a dirty window on a rainy winter day. At first, Clingenpeel felt like he’d developed a superpower, an ability to experience the world in multiple dimensions simultaneously.

6

SEVEN DAYS ART HOP GUIDE

2020

Eventually, his friends convinced him to see a doctor, which is how he learned he had multiple sclerosis, a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure for MS; its progression results in the gradual, often unpredictable loss of sensation and motor function. Clingenpeel, now 41, uses an electric wheelchair to get around and wears a patch over his left eye, which gives him a slightly mystical appearance. He lives in Cathedral Square, a senior apartment complex in downtown Burlington, where he is the youngest resident by several decades. Clingenpeel, who goes by the moniker Will C., rents an alcove at Green Door Studio, a warren of artist studios tucked behind the Howard Space in the South End. He enters the building through the garage, using a clicker on the arm of his wheelchair. (“It makes me feel like Batman,” he explained.) Even before his vision changed, Clingenpeel felt color in the same way other people feel warmth or boredom or hunger. Too much yellow and orange afflicts him like a fever; even with his color-blind eye, he experiences one particular shade of deep indigo blue as a luminous, almost ecstatic presence. When Clingenpeel works in his studio, his own paintings sometimes overwhelm him. “Think about kittens,” he said. “Say you love kittens, but you suddenly found yourself flying at Mach speed through a vortex of kittens. That’s what it feels

like for me to be surrounded by so much color. It’s a cacophony! It’s too much!” Clingenpeel’s paintings look like the kaleidoscopic montages that flash across the insides of your eyelids when you close your eyes in bright sunlight. They’re trippy and hypnagogic, fantasias of color and shadow and reticulated forms that seem to be floating to the surface of something murky and deep. He often makes his own paints from scratch, using UV-sensitive pigments and crushed crystals or mineral powders for texture. To create those partially submergedlooking mesh patterns, which have become a primary feature of his aesthetic, Clingenpeel uses fishnet stockings, torn garments or anything else he can manipulate as a vehicle for paint absorption. Standing slightly to the left or right of one of his canvases has the same effect as pulling one string in a cat’s cradle, warping the whole composition toward a different vanishing point. “I love creating things that are close to impossible to accurately capture on a camera,” he said. “I have actually gone out of my way to make colors and shifting pigments that would take two videos and five photos to show online.” Sometimes, Clingenpeel reverse-image searches his own paintings, just to see what Google’s algorithm makes of his work. “I love it when the things that come up are these insane, psychedelic, computer-generated images,” he said. “For me, the mesh is all about connection, and I love that it tricks the digital stuff. It goes back to the mathematical aspect of creation — like,

We’ve got you covered! computers and people aren’t different. Everything is literally, physically connected. We’re all just vibrating.” Clingenpeel grew up on a dirt road in Sunderland, a town of fewer than 1,000 people. To him, being an artist is an essentially spiritual vocation, an orientation to his entire life rather than a particular mode of expression. According to family mythology, he showed his first signs of creative ambition at age 3, when he invited his mother to behold the masterpiece he’d

props himself against the nearest tree and plays a few long notes. “I constantly feel like I’m suffocating in the city,” he said. “All I can hear is buzzing electric, but that flute is my pause and my grounding. I close my eyes. I see colors. It’s all resonance.” Clingenpeel isn’t particularly bummed about this year’s muted rendition of Art Hop. “The people who come will actually be coming for the art — and, in a sense, they’re kind of risking their lives to see it,” he said. “I love that

I CLOSE MY EYES. I SEE COLORS.

IT’S ALL RESONANCE. WILL CLINGENPEEL created on his bedroom wall, using the contents of his brother’s diaper as a medium and a stuffed animal as a paintbrush. At 16, Clingenpeel dropped out of high school, passed his General Educational Development test and drove to San Francisco with a few friends in a 1980 Dodge Aspen. (It croaked, poetically, just as they coasted through the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets.) At various points, Clingenpeel has chanted with the Hare Krishnas in Golden Gate Park (the Krishnas compensated him in the form of fruit), trimmed coconut trees in Maui, owned an organic flower farm and landscaping business in Stratton, and worked as a tattooist in Winooski. (His cousin, Andrew Clingenpeel, is a tattoo artist in Brandon.) He is fairly confident, though not completely certain, that he was once Burlington’s first insured fire performer. For several years, Clingenpeel was a buyer for Old Gold, a vintage clothing and costume shop in downtown Burlington; this spring, he painted a mural, reminiscent of shed python skin, on the façade of its new storefront SEE THE ART on Cherry Green Door Studio, Street. 4 Howard St., Suite Over G-1, Burlington. the years, Learn more at Clingenpeel willcstudio.com has given and on Instagram @wheelywillie. away or sold most of his possessions, except for a hand-carved cedar flute he bought from White Raven Drum Works in Bridgewater Corners when he was 15 years old. it’s not about the food and the booze, the spectacle.” From September 11 through 13, the current tenants of Green Door — Clingenpeel, painter Nicole Christman, jeweler Jon Black, and mixedmedia artists Steve Sharon and Scottie Raymond — will open their studio for a group show with several other Burlington artists, including Jelani O’Connor, Jeff Bruno and Jason Pappas. In the weeks leading up to Art Hop, Clingenpeel embarked on a series of paintings that appears to mark a radical departure from his dizzying pattern reveries. His most recent canvases are quieter, more reflective: a tall, brooding rectangle of off-white against a stormcloud blue background; a prismatic gradient of reds, yellows and cool greens with a rough, scalloped surface, a textural effect that Clingenpeel achieved by using his hand like a palette knife. This shift to minimalism is due in part to the progression of his MS. Over the last month, Clingenpeel has lost feeling in his left hand, making fine brushwork increasingly difficult. But his work doesn’t depend on any specific technique, nor does he even believe that “his” work belongs to him in a possessive, authorial sense. His art, Clingenpeel said, has always been about tapping into the cosmic, allowing himself to channel his wellspring of creativity, which always finds a new outlet. “Knowing that my vision and my abilities are finite doesn’t scare me; it pushes me,” he said. “So I allow myself to be an ever-changing conduit — just like a pipe slowly rusts and cracks, but it can still carry water.” m Contact: chelsea@sevendaysvt.com

Welcome to the 28th Annual South End Art Hop, a virtual and limited in-person, mask-on event! The South End Arts + Business Association (SEABA) is honored to represent the artist and business communities of the South End Arts District — while promoting a safe shopping experience for all. Supporting this unique area is our mission, and we welcome you to celebrate all that the district has to offer while encouraging growth to our creative economy. When you purchase artwork, you give your vote of confidence. When you order curbside and takeout, you convey that you believe in small businesses and want to see them thrive. SEABA will not be organizing evening events, outdoor food vending or street closures this year. Though we are closing earlier at night, we invite you to take a drive down Pine Street in Burlington as the sun goes down and enjoy beautiful lighting on historic buildings provided by Satellite Arts Productions, without ever leaving your cars! SEABA curates artwork in historical South End buildings year-round, and we have some extraordinary exhibitions for you that are on view for three months. All artwork is available for viewing and purchase at seaba.com/shop or for viewing in person in reserved self-guided tour times during the Art Hop weekend. Use this official program as a reference for where to visit now and where to check in and offer support later. There are artist studios, vintage shops, art galleries, breweries, coffee shops, restaurants, and stores filled with unique gifts and items for your home. Thank you for your support. Enjoy — safely!

hank you to all of the artists, businesses, organizers and members of SEABA since our inception in 1986! The South End Arts District is so unique, and we are continuously impressed by the strength and dedication shown by all, especially during this time. 2020 has had its challenges, and SEABA is still here in great part thanks to Burlington’s Community and Economic Deveopment Office, the Vermont Arts Council, the Vermont Economic Recovery Grant, the City of Burlington, and individual contributions. Building connections has been incredibly rewarding, and we look forward to continuing our relationship to this community for many years to come. Take good care, buy great art, and see you soon.

T

he SEABA Board of Directors, staff, sponsors and supporters knew that the 28th Annual South End Art Hop would be different this year. We have worked together to honor the spirit of the event and celebrate all that the South End Arts District has to offer to create a safe shopping and viewing experience for all.

What’s

new?

SEABA has a new website that features every curated piece of artwork in a buy-it-now marketplace for shopping from home at seaba.com/shop. SEABA-curated locations each have reservation policies in place to maintain capacities of 30 or fewer visitors per hour during the Art Hop weekend.

The SEABA Annual South End Art Hop Juried Show is now completely digital and online. Visit seaba.com/juried throughout the Art Hop weekend to vote for your People’s Choice selection (see page 14). The Kids Hop is now a pop-up tent inside the Saturday SEABA Artist Market. Northfield Savings Bank is hosting socially distanced pickup of goodie bags filled with activities for families to take home (see pages 12-13). Artist vending is now in a marked-off space at the corner of Howard and Pine streets on Saturday, September 12, 10 a.m.4 p.m. There is one entrance and one exit to keep the flow of customers moving. Ground markers indicate where to stand in case there’s a line. There have been fewer opportunities for artists this year, so let’s buy everything they have! See page13 and seaba.com/artist-market for partipating vendors. We are closing up early at night this year, though we encourage you to take a drive through the South End Arts District from sundown to 11 p.m. for a tour of historical buildings lit up at night by Satellite Arts Productions (locations marked on p. 13 map). The STRUT! Fashion Show will take place in March of 2021 at the new Hula building on Lakeside Avenue, if it is safe to do so at that time (details on p. 16).

TICKET RESERVATIONS

Art Hop participating sites and SEABA-curated buildings each have their own weekend hours and guidelines for entry, so plan ahead for your mask-on, in-person visit. SEABA-curated buildings (and also The Soda Plant) have a reservation system for you to select the hour that you would like to visit The Vaults, The Maltex Building, The Innovation Center and The Media Factory. This system will allow us to enact safety measures, capacities and contact tracing. Visit seaba.com/arthop for free reservation tickets. COVID-19 SAFETY

The entire State of Vermont has a mask-on mandate, and we take that guideline seriously. Utilize all posted hand-sanitizing stations, or bring your own hand sanitizer. If you are not feeling well or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, please stay home. You may enjoy the exhibitions online, and curated exhibitions are on view for up to three months. PARKING + TRANSPORTATION

Parking is available behind the Maltex building at 431 Pine Street, in the second lot at the Innovation Center at 128 Lakeside Avenue and at designated parking areas listed in each building reservation. We ask that you walk and bike when possible and be respectful of curbside business areas. HUNGRY?

Food this year is provided by all of the wonderful South End Arts District restaurants, food shops and breweries. Check their reservation policies before arriving. There will be no Art Hop food trucks on-site. See page17 for recommendations. TRASH & RESTROOMS

Please help us keep our city beautiful by taking your food items with you! Restrooms are located inside each SEABA-curated building. Each restaurant or bar you visit will have its own restroom policy, so follow along with the guidelines, and wash those hands!

TAKING PICTURES Finding work that you enjoy is a great reason to document. It’s what you do with that image that’s important. Ask whether you may take a picture in a gallery or studio. It is often encouraged that you tag the venue’s social media page if you choose to share the photo online. Take a picture of the label or signage while you are at it, and give more thought later on to purchasing work or following the artist online.

Thank you for supporting the arts anytime you need the perfect gift or piece of work for your home or office!

COMMISSION A CUSTOM WORK Artists may supplement their practice by taking on commission work. Collaborating with a patron can be rewarding though often challenging when artists are also living up to outside expectations. As a patron, know that your support is valuable and that being involved in the process may come with a higher price tag. Make sure you and the artist know the expectations when entering into the agreement!

SEABA CURATION The curation program does not stop with Art Hop. Historic buildings in the area that feature artwork year-round are the Vaults, the Innovation Center, the Media Factory, and Speeder & Earl’s on Pine Street. You may also stop by Noyes Automotive or the Technology Park at 30 Community Drive in South Burlington.

SEARS LANE

BUYING ART FROM SEABA’S CURATED EXHIBITIONS Purchasing artwork has never been easier, because each piece in a SEABAcurated building is now online for browsing from home at seaba. com/shop. Make a reservation online for selfguided tours during the Art Hop weekend. You can tell whether a work is for sale by the label next to it. Note that “NFS” means not for sale, and “POR” means price on request and that further dialogue is encouraged. A red dot on a label means that the artwork has sold, but follow the artist’s work for another opportunity! To pay for SEABA-curated work, simply go online to complete the transaction. If you are in attendance, we ask that you leave the piece on the wall. A representative will work with you on packing up the piece for local pickup or shipment within two weeks. SEABA is serving as a representative to these artists. If you have any questions, contact: info@seaba.com or 802-859-9222.

Van Wagner’s artworks reference and combine various geometric architectonic components, anthropomorphic characteristics, signage, and various investigations of the inner and outer landscape. Over the years, he has collected natural and pigmented sands from around the world, incorporating this substance into his layered relief paintings and sculptures. The reassembling of sand back into a concrete substance onto his canvases and cardboard boxes playfully reminds us of life’s cycles. In Bellport, N.Y., Van

Wagner opened Marquee Projects, an art gallery that exhibits and represents a cross-section of both accomplished emerging artists and established artists from around the U.S., all of whom push boundaries in concept, material and medium. Van Wagner comes to us by way of recommendation from Mark Waskow, a longtime arts supporter, collector and SEABA contributor. Waskow has an incredible knack for selecting a juror with a unique eye who is in step with the contemporary art world.

Bright Idea

Satellite Arts Productions shines a light on Art Hop BY D A N B O L L E S

he pandemic has dealt a critical blow to show business: Headlines mourn a darkened Broadway, stalled Hollywood productions and a live-concert industry teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, if not extinction. But the economic and emotional carnage wrought by the coronavirus in the entertainment industry goes far beyond who or what audiences see on stages and screens. For a sense of the real toll, take a peek behind the curtain at the thousands of largely unknown production workers who make all your favorite shows, movies and festivals happen.

People like Jason Liggett, Josh Rowe and Kyle Rose. “Everyone’s out of work. It’s heartbreaking,” Liggett said. Liggett is a Williston-based lighting designer who’s logged countless tour miles with the likes of Phish, Grace Potter, Nickel Creek and Wilco since getting his start at Higher Ground 20 years ago. For the past five years, he’s been making sure the right hues shine on Cecily Strong, Pete Davidson and the rest of the “Saturday Night Live” cast as best boy grip on the show’s film units. Sidelined because of the pandemic, Liggett and fellow erstwhile local lighting designers Rowe, who owns True Hue Concert Lighting, and Rose, owner of KTR Lighting, have embarked on 20

a new endeavor called Satellite Arts Productions. It’s so named because of its location in the Satellite Arts studios behind Feldman’s Bagels on Pine Street in Burlington. “There’s no work,” Liggett explained. “So we figured, let’s start a collective and make work.” Satellite Arts Productions might not have the high-wattage star power of SNL — or acts like Trombone Shorty or Twiddle, with whom Rowe and Rose had worked just before the coronavirus arrived. But the trio hopes to shine a spotlight — or several spotlights, and maybe some strobes and rad

nationwide initiative called We Make Events. That day, buildings across the country were lit up in red, along with the projected hashtags #wemakeevents and #redalertrestart. The goal was to raise awareness of the RESTART Act, a bill that would provide federal relief to entertainment industry workers. Rowe spearheaded We Make Events in Vermont, and Satellite Arts bathed local live-music venues such as Higher Ground, Nectar’s, Radio Bean and the Monkey House, among other locations, in red light. “It’s a solidarity statement,” Rowe explained.

J AS O N L I G G E T T lasers — on the artistic efforts of locals. That includes what promises to be an extensive presence at this year’s South End Art Hop. “I’ve always wanted to light the Art Hop,” Liggett said, noting that many of the artists he worked with while lighting Phish festivals, designed by local design wizard Russ Bennett, are based on Pine Street. Liggett conceded that the lighting company’s contributions to Art Hop this year might not be as grandiose as they’d typically craft. But it’s likely that he, Rowe and Rose will inspire attendees to see the annual arts fest in, ahem, a new light. Along Pine Street, from the S.P.A.C.E. Gallery in the Soda Plant to Switchback Brewing farther south, Satellite Arts Productions will present a constellation of luminous wonders. Socially distanced revelers through the South End Arts District can experience the collective’s glimmering handiwork at locations such as the Innovation Center of Vermont, the Dealer.com silos, the smokestack by ReSOURCE, the Unsworth Block and the Maltex Building. In the woods abutting the last, expect a Close Encounters of the Third Kind-inspired installation in line with the Art Hop’s alien theme this year. “You might get abducted,” Liggett joked. The Art Hop marks Satellite Arts Productions’ coming-out party, but the group introduced itself to the Burlington area earlier this month. On September 1, it took part in a

“It speaks to what we’re about,” Liggett added, noting the wide, closeknit community of arts production workers in Vermont. Thanks to the varied and complementary talents of its three founders, as well as the growing community of lighting artists and designers who are now members of the collective, Satellite Arts Productions is able to offer everything from small, arty lighting projects to virtual events to large-scale set design. The Pine Street studio, which is still a work in progress, will feature a visualization suite where the designers can map out productions using computer models. It will also have a “black box,” something like a theatrical laboratory where they can physically experiment with new ideas and designs. During Art Hop, Liggett said, he plans to host a lighting installation in the black-box space, though as of press time he was still plotting out what exactly that will be. “We’ll have something pretty crazy in there,” he said with a grin, explaining that the installation will occupy the entire space. Whatever Liggett, Rowe and Rose dream up for Art Hop, you can bet it will be illuminating. “We love what we do,” Liggett said. “It’s about creating those visual spaces, those feelings that people take home with them and don’t even realize it. And we really miss that.” m

he word “histology” doesn’t typically come up in an artist statement. And while feminist artists of the past have not shied away from blunt depictions of female anatomy, few get so intimate as, say, cellular structures in the uterine wall. For Erin Bundock, the microscopic gaze, if you will, is central to her fabric-based creations. Indeed, they fine-tune the meaning of the phrase “body of work.”

IF YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY,

YOU CAN HAVE MORE POWER. ERIN BUNDOCK

SEVEN DAYS ART HOP GUIDE

2020

Bundock, 22, is the recipient of the first-ever South End Arts District studio residency at the Vaults, a mixed-use building on Howard Street. The South End Arts + Business Association, which is sponsoring the yearlong residency, has an office there, as well. The residency officially debuts during the South End Art Hop, though Bundock has been ensconced in her new studio for several weeks. The recent University of Vermont graduate intends to continue her exploration of sexuality and reproductive health, themes evident in her thesis exhibition, titled “A Stitch Between.” Several large fabric pieces from that collection — repurposed bedsheets with figuration and patterning in marker, paint and stitching — adorn Bundock’s studio. Smaller fabric works, including a bold-hued facsimile of a sanitary pad, and drawings on paper are also tacked to the walls. Neatly folded lengths of screen-printed muslin are draped over a drying rack; vibrant screen-printed squares of cloth are arranged over her worktable, like puzzle pieces awaiting placement in future projects. Lacking screen-printing equipment at the Vaults, Bundock said she’ll get into low-tech block printing this coming year. During a recent interview in her studio, which features a garage-style roll-up wall on the west, Bundock further explained the foundations of her art. “Basically, the work is around conversations we have around human reproductive health and sexuality,” she said. “There are questions about sex and abortion … I started developing these textiles based on histology.” Though these are fairly universal concerns, for Bundock the pursuit isn’t just conceptual. “It’s personal work, related to my issues around birth control,” she said, noting that taking birth control pills caused her to experience complex migraines. She subsequently discovered that her mother had suffered from them, too, when she was pregnant. This shared health history in part informs the backstory for

Get your daily dose of positivity! Bundock’s large-scale wall hanging “Letter to My Mother.” Two figures — a woman and a younger girl — in orange swimsuits float in a tangle of amorphous shapes in blues and black, each of these patched and stitched onto a larger background cloth. The girl’s head “breaks” the surface, extending beyond the upper edge of the piece, as she reaches one hand toward the woman. In another large wall hanging, titled “Period Shower,” two somewhat cartoon-like people stand in said shower, rendered in electrified hues of orange, cerise and blue. Both face the water, its droplets a cascade of blue stitches. The shorter figure, a female, clutches at a black blob in her belly, as the seemingly male taller figure comforts her, touching her back and head. On the surface, the meaning of this piece might not be clear, but, learning its title, every woman on Earth would “get it.” Knowing and being comfortable with your body is paramount, according to Bundock. “It’s important because if you understand your body, you can have “Letter to My Mother” by Erin Bundock

more power,” she said, referencing both medical and policy arenas. “You can demand that you can make your own decisions.” After talking with her mother and other older women about these issues, Bundock said, “I feel lucky to be in the generation I’m in when there are more open conversations. Having to deal with this stuff is how we move through life.” Bundock’s interest in microanatomy isn’t random; her mother, Elizabeth Bundock, has had a career as a forensic pathologist. She previously worked as a forensic pathologist in Boston and is now one of two medical examiners for the State of Vermont. Erin’s father, Brett Bundock, a scenic designer and freelance carpenter, is ostensibly the artistic inspiration, but Erin said her mother and brother are also creative. The family relocated to Shelburne in 2008. “This work has influences from both of my parents,” Bundock said, gesturing around her studio. “Some [pieces] are like backdrops; my mom is the medical influence.” Exploring figuration stems from her fascination with “what’s inside a person and how that is expressed,” she commented. And Bundock, a former English minor, appreciates the value of storytelling. “Bringing that to fiber, a comfortable medium in everyday life, that interests me,” she said, acknowledging the long history of women’s textile-based art and traditional quilting circles. During her residency, Bundock intends to create more big pieces, which can take months to complete, and more drawings to “widen the pool” of possible narratives. “I’m very thankful for having this space and not having to pay for it,” she said. “This is definitely a big win.” Bundock’s studio will be open during the Art Hop, with limited occupancy and lots of hand sanitizer.
