ermonters don’t just shop local. They eat local, listen local and play local. So if you’re looking to do as the locals do — whether you live here or are just visiting — look no farther. For this annual best-of-Vermont guide, locals weighed in on exactly what they like. Brought to you by Seven Days, the state’s alternative newsweekly, these pages buzz with only the good stuff. We call this guide “the Daysies,” and our readers have been picking the best and the brightest in the field for 13 years. Nothin’ unlucky about that. Whittling down to the Daysies winners took two rounds of voting — from nearly 9,000 people who cast just shy of 590,000 individual votes. First, folks picked their favorites in 171 categories, ranging from brewpub to bank, ski slope to singer-songwriter. Second, we tallied the votes, selected up to five finalists in each category — or more, if there were .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ties — and asked readers to vote once again. Because who .......................... doesn’t like multiple choice? A note about the ... “Outside Chittenden County” sections. In Vermont, the .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . largest population is inside Chittenden County, so it’s .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . tough for anyone outside of it to top the Burlington area .......................... (unless the category involves mountains). But in some ... instances — say, bookstore or ’board shop — the swell of votes for places not in Chittenden County justified separating the category. So that’s what that means. With perennial winners, dark-horse challengers and new favorites, the competition always sparks good-natured rivalry and plenty of suspense. To keep things fresh as a Daysie, Seven Days writers named some favorites of their own this year. Best public bathroom for nooky? Look for that and other irreverent staff picks sprouting up throughout the guide. Congrats to all the Daysies winners (and almost-winners), and thanks to Seven Days readers for voting. You sure know how to pick ’em. —CAROLYN FOX

BEST NEW RESTAURANT

Waterworks Food+Drink

Food is a big deal in Vermont — so much so that we devoted a quarter of the Daysies awards to it this year. How could we not? Farmers markets are more like weekly food festivals around these parts, and Seven Days’ food coverage consistently gets among the most clicks online. When a restaurant opens, locals greet it like a new friend. When a beloved eatery closes, everyone laments. So try not to drool too much while reading the 42 categories that follow. These worthy winners will get you through breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and they represent the very best of our foodie and farm-totable culture. As always, we spiced up the ballot a bit, adding several new categories and doing away with a few old ones. “Best restaurant if you’re paying” and “best restaurant if they’re paying” became simply “best restaurant.” And with so many stellar institutions vying for the honor, it was a true culinary coup to reach the top. We also added “best family restaurant” to encompass more affordable, laid-back dining options. Another mouthwatering battle ensued. Speaking of food feuds, none rivals that of the Rovetto family, who run both Piecasso Pizzeria & Lounge and Positive Pie. Every year, cousins duke it out for best pizza restaurant outside Chittenden County. This year, Piecasso unseated Positive Pie to snag the Daysie. Nothin’ a few pints and pies can’t smooth over … we hope. For the rest of us, everything from sushi to cider doughnuts awaits. Eat up.

Chittenden County mourned Winooski’s original Waterworks Restaurant for years after it closed in the early aughts. When Pizzeria Verità co-owner David Abdoo announced plans to restore the restaurant in late 2014, Seven Days readers were so elated that a story about the revamp was one of the top-read articles of the year. Once opened, in December, the new Waterworks met with immediate fanfare: Prime-time reservations at the nearly 200-seat restaurant were a rare score for months. Early reviews raved about the gorgeous, wellappointed space and elegant cocktails, and during Vermont Restaurant Week in April, pastry chef Nicole Maddox took the grand prize at the Sweet Start Smackdown. So save room for dessert after enjoying the kitchen’s modern, approachable cooking with a mist-kissed view of the falls — if you can score a table. 20 Winooski Falls Way, Winooski, 497-3525, waterworksvt.com

BEST BREAKFAST/BRUNCH Outside Chittenden County

158 Main Restaurant & Bakery

Few dishes scream “VERMONT!” louder than Shit on a Shingle (less vulgarly known as chipped beef and gravy on toast), served from a farmhouse kitchen. At 158 Main, chef Jack Foley serves a bangin’ version of the old-timey staple — the perfect fuel for skiing — in a historic space in downtown Jeffersonville. If that’s not your steez, choose from a half dozen eggs Benedicts, which took this year’s Daysie for Vermont’s best beyond Chittenden County. While those items alone would make a respectable brunch menu, Foley’s weekend spread offers a sprawling selection of omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, southern-style biscuits and gravy, and healthy egg-white scrambles. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and at 158 Main, it’s also the most delicious. 158 Main St., Jeffersonville, 644-8100, 158main.com

BEST SMALL-TOWN RESTAURANT WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME

Hatch 31

Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The restaurant at 31 Main Street in Bristol has switched hands over the years — what was formerly ND’s is now the revamped bar and eatery Hatch 31. But the cozy spot has remained a family-run establishment where you never feel like just another face. Owned and operated by Matt Wisell, his daughters Kayla and KRISTEN RAVIN Sarah, and his niece CALENDAR Roberta Sinnock, WRITER Hatch offers weekly live music, classic pub fare and sweet-as-pie service that makes everyone feel like a regular — no matter how often you go. 31 Main St., Bristol, 453-2774 CALEB KENNA

What’s the first liquid everyone associates with the Green Mountain State? Sorry, maple syrup; Vermont’s craft beer is now bewitching the country. Between Hill Farmstead Brewery and the Alchemist — both of which have nabbed international awards and attention — and up-and-comers such as Fiddlehead and 14th Star Brewing, the state is a bona fide beer mecca. Is it something in the water? We suspect the credit simply goes to hardworking brewers. A number of Daysies categories recognize the beer craze. New this year, we asked readers to vote for the retailer with the best craft brew selection. Would people really be loyal enough to one store to justify the category? we wondered.

A staggering 3,182 votes answered a resounding yes. Congrats to Winooski’s Beverage Warehouse for snagging nearly half of those for the win. Of course, there’s more to beverages than beer; ciders, spirits and smoothies also vied for Daysies. And not everyone takes drinking as seriously as hop heads. Thanks for spiking the ballot with wit (we hope) in the category of best place to drink alone. Some of your suggestions: “in a puddle of my own tears,” “under a bridge” and “in the woods.” Another unconventional response made us smile, too. For the new category of best gay-friendly bar, someone wrote “All of them.” Yep, drinking — and living — in Vermont goes down easy.

BEST PLACE TO DRINK ALONE/BEST COCKTAILS

The Daily Planet

When it’s been a bad day and you just can’t even anymore, there’s no shame in grabbing a drink alone. But do yourself a favor and make sure it’s a good one. The Daily Planet’s polished potables have claimed the Daysie for best cocktail two years in a row. With a seasonal B.B.B. Smash in hand — an invigorating, summery mix of bourbon, blackberry and ginger beer — anyone can find their happy place, be it at the intimate bar, greenhouse or island-style outdoor patio. Or go sweeter with the BTVice, which fuses strawberry-peach coulis with vodka, St. Germain and a splash of Prosecco. There’s nothing like a little bubbly to lift your spirits. 15 Center St., Burlington, 862-9647, dailyplanetvt.com

BEST CRAFT BREW SELECTION

Beverage Warehouse

Beverage Warehouse carries wines and liquors, but folks come in droves for one thing: beer. The shop releases in-demand Heady Topper and Lawson’s Finest Liquids multiple times a week, but it also stocks 1,400 other unique brews. The rarest — including a lambic from Belgium’s Cantillon — age in a beer cave in anticipation of special releases. Need a last-minute keg for that party? The warehouse keeps 35 barrels on hand, with hundreds more available with a little notice. And if there’s a hot — er, cold — new Vermont brew coming out, beer geeks know the Bevie will have it. That’s because owner Jennifer Swiatek — who began her career here at age 15 in bottle redemption and ice bagging — is one of the state’s most passionate advocates of local beer. Her mission is not just to sell the stuff but to educate and enlighten the drinking public. 1 East St., Winooski, 655-2620, beveragewarehousevt.com

Just walking into Tomgirl Juice Co.’s sunny shop in Burlington’s South End feels like a treat. SEVEN DAYSIES 2015-16

MATTHEW THORSEN

24

Vermonters are a loyal bunch — as we’re reminded each year in the arts and entertainment section of the Daysies. The nightclub, theater, cinema and gallery finalists represented here are mostly perennial favorites. Unless some kick-ass new venues open, these guys will probably rule the ballot forever. Musicians, on the other hand, come and go — yet Grace Potter maintains her reign as Vermont’s best vocalist and singersongwriter. As does Kat Wright & the Indomitable Soul Band for best funk/R&B group and best jazz/blues group. Indomitable, indeed. (Also, perhaps it’s time for a little lesson on music genres, hmm?) Still, we’ve crowned some deserving new winners this year, in categories such as best large live music venue, best rock group and best actor. Let’s give ’em a big round of applause! In our book, everyone who made it into the finals is a star.

BEST AMERICANA ARTIST/GROUP

Starline Rhythm Boys

It’s hard to believe there was ever a time when the Starline Rhythm Boys weren’t rocking Green Mountain honky tonks and juke joints. There’s a timeless quality about the venerated rockabilly trio, which actually formed in 1998. That’s a testament both to the band’s blue-collar work ethic — they still average something like 100 gigs per year — and vintage twang that harks back to the dawn of rock and roll. “Big Al” Lemery’s stinging Telecaster licks are as identifiable as they are slick. And upright bassist Billy Bratcher’s percussive, slaphappy thumping is worth the price of admission on its own. But the key to SRB’s appeal is their ageless front man, Danny Coane, and his smooth Buck Owens-style croon. Put it all together and you get one of Vermont’s most beloved bands, in any genre. starlinerhythmboys.com

Off Center for the Dramatic Arts

At the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts in Burlington, I’ve seen wildly wacky romps such as Saints & Poets Production Company’s O, Caligula! I’ve taken in dark dramas by playwright Stephen Goldberg. BEST DAYSIES CAMPAIGN GIMMICK (THAT DIDN’T WORK)

DAN BOLLES MUSIC EDITOR

There is one thing about the Daysies awards that I find troubling: nominees groveling for votes. It’s gauche. It’s tacky. On the other hand, I love me a good gimmick. And the gimmick employed by Annie Russell, nominated for best standup comic, was great. When she’s not cracking jokes onstage, Russell is a producer at Vermont Public Radio. She used her multimedia savvy to craft the best campaign video this side of Bernie Sanders. Russell spliced together footage from celebrity interviews and testimonials, inserting her name, clumsily, into responses by George Clooney, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and even Honey Boo Boo. Said Wintour (sort of), “I’m so lucky in my work that I’m able to meet some of the most incredible women in the world, women like Sarah Jessica Parker and [ANNIE RUSSELL].” Gold. Russell lost the Daysie to the very deserving Josie Leavitt. But she’s a winner in my book. And also Honey Boo Boo’s. annierussell.org, @anniemrussell

When it comes to shopping, Vermonters know two things: 1. Bring your own bag (or face the disapproving glare of the checkout person), and 2. Buy local. While a handful of big-box stores and national chains made it onto the final ballot, not one of them scored a Daysie. In Davidand-Goliath showdowns, the little guys won time and time again. And not for the first year. Yep, Phoenix Books defended its Daysie from Barnes & Noble once again. (And can we all take a moment to appreciate the fact that print is not dead? Six Vermont-owned bookstores made it into the finals.) Homeport beat out Bed Bath & Beyond, and voters chose Woodbury Mountain Toys over Toys “R” Us. The list goes on. Another thrilling triumph: Sweet Lady Jane took back the Daysie in the highly competitive category of best women’s casual clothing store (inside Chittenden County), coming out ahead of neighboring Church Street boutiques. We’d like to award special honors to Buttered Noodles, a multi-year Daysies winner for best children’s toy store and best children’s clothing. The Williston shop easily made it into the finals this year, but we removed it from the running when owners Alan and Dande Levi announced their retirement and the store’s closing. We’ll miss you — and your noodles! The biggest congrats in this section go to the many perennial Daysies winners who, seemingly, will never be deflowered — er, you know. Those include Outdoor Gear Exchange, Eyes of the World, Mirror Mirror, Pet Food Warehouse, Bear Pond Books, Gardener’s Supply and Automaster. Don’t go changin’ — we love you just the way you are.

MOST ENTERTAINING RETAIL STORE

Buch Spieler Records and The Getup Vintage

LOCALS PICK THE BEST OF VERMONT SEVENDAYSVT.COM/DAYSIES

Montpelier is filled with unique boutiques, but the one that takes me to my happy place is Buch Spieler Records and, within it, the Getup Vintage. I browse the funny cards first — particularly the New Yorker cartoon selection. Overhead, leaning against a stained-glass window, is a giant cardboard cat that alarms visiting dogs. Vinyl records dangle from the ceiling like flat piñatas, and thousands of for-sale LPs span every genre and era. On the Getup side, colorful hanging dresses from yesteryear add festive frill. The record store, founded in 1973 by Fred Wilber and now co-owned by Xavier Jimenez and Knayte Lander, and the recycled-clothing enterprise, owned by Hannah Bean and Jeff Thomson, joined forces under one roof five years ago. It’s a simpatico relationship: Here, the past is a present.

SEVEN DAYSIES 2015-16

BEST RESORT SPA

40

Call us creatures of habit, but Vermonters know what we like in our banks, salons, gyms and other services. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Once you find someone who understands your hair, why go looking for another stylist? Playing favorites is fine by us — it means less counting on our end, for one thing. On the other hand, we like to keep things interesting, and that’s why we added several categories to the mix this year. For the first time, we differentiated between best day spa and best resort spa. Best marketing/advertising agency is new, too. Among the newbies in the winner’s circle are Oh my DOG, Oasis Day Spa, Perfect Nails by Thu, Girlington Garage and Fuse. Congrats! * = New category in 2015

Topnotch Resort & Spa

Here’s a healthy prescription for the blues: Book yourself an hourlong massage at the Topnotch Resort & Spa. Once the knots, aches and pains have been kneaded from your back and shoulders, slip into the hot tub for a relaxing soak. Then don one of the spa’s soft terrycloth robes, order yourself a poolside mojito, kick back and forget about email and Monday mornings. If a few hours at the aptly named Topnotch haven’t resulted in a significant attitude adjustment, check into a room and repeat as necessary. 4000 Mountain Rd., Stowe, 760-6330, topnotchresort.com

¡Duino! (Duende)/ Light Club Lamp Shop

When sparks fly fast and hot, few experiences are more thrilling than a freaky romp in a public bathroom. But not all bathrooms are created equal. You’ll need privacy — a single-occupancy situation — and space enough for two. There should also be other restrooms nearby. You don’t want to bogart the only toilet for your lovefest; it’s inconsiderate, and it vastly increases your risk of getting busted. (And imagine exiting, all hot and bothered, to a line of people waiting to pee.) Finally, you’ll need a little ambience. ¡Duino! (Duende)’s sparkling, copper-clad commode offers flattering, gold-tinged light and just enough space for a standing quickie. Need more room? Rendezvous in the adjacent Lamp Shop’s mirrored, low-lit lavatory for a more laid-back erotic encounter. 10-12 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington, 660-9346, radiobean.com

At this Burlington-based agency with a local history dating back to the 19th century, more than 65 Realtors and staff work with home buyers, market luxury homes, facilitate relocations, and provide rental assistance to both tenants and landlords. (863-1500, hickokandboardman.com)

BEST SOCIAL-MEDIA PERSONALITY

Bernie Sanders

In the past, a media organization has typically dominated this section of the Daysies. But this year there’s a clear individual winner: Sen. Bernie Sanders. Vermonters are feelin’ the Bern; voters awarded the 2016 presidential candidate not one but two Daysies, for best social media personality and best Vermont story of the year. All we’d like to know is: Senator, will you intone some folk songs for us at the Daysies awards party? Pretty please? We’d also like to award special posthumous honors to longtime WCAX anchor and news director Marselis Parsons. Many of you nominated him for best local TV journalist shortly before his death in May. RIP, Marselis. We miss you. Seven Days readers stayed loyal to the vast majority of last year’s media winners — including two of our own: Alice Levitt (for best print/online journalist) and Matthew Thorsen (for best photojournalist). They’re flattered! Other individuals returning to our media hall of fame: WCAX anchor Darren Perron, Vermont Public Radio host Jane Lindholm, Planet 96.7 radio DJ Craig Mitchell and WPTZ meteorologist Tom Messner. With such seasoned pros in Vermont media, the forecast is looking sunny.

He doesn’t tweet cat photos or Instagram his latest meal in the Senate cafeteria, but Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) certainly knows his way around social media. Or at least his tech-savvy staffers do: When the New York Times dubbed him “a king of social media” in May, the paper noted that the senator composes his posts on a yellow legal pad. Whatever the method, it works. More than 585,000 people follow his campaign and Senate Twitter accounts, while more than 2.2 million like him on Facebook. More so than any other candidate, he’s used Reddit to draw huge crowds to campaign rallies and to channel small-dollar contributions to his campaign. If only Grandpa could master social media the way this 73-year-old has! Facebook • @BernieSanders

BEST PUBLIC RELATIONS FLACK

Dorothy Schnure, Green Mountain Power Officially, they go by “corporate spokesperson,” “director of communications” or, if they’re cops or soldiers, “public information officer.” Journalists call them by one name: flack. It’s what they get when events go awry for their organization — and what they give reporters if we flub a story about them. Vermont’s press corps is blessed with many top-notch flacks, but few are as sharp as 33year Green Mountain Power veteran “Dotty” Schnure, who knows Vermont’s largest utility inside and out. It’s a wonder no one’s photographed her chain-sawing trees and reconnecting downed power lines after a major storm.

Can anyone ever “best” this cheerful TV weatherman, whose smile is always set to sunny? We forecast no. (@TomMessner)

Technically, Matthew Thorsen became Seven Days’ first-ever staff photographer in fall 2014. But the soft-spoken, fun-loving photog has been gracing our pages with his distinctly artistic viewpoint for all 20 years of the altweekly’s existence. Every week brings a new and unusual assignment (or three), be it photographing a group of Vermont furries or the food at a hot new restaurant. Thorsen has long been a fixture at local festivals — you’ve seen him as the seven-foot-tall, goldheaded skeleton with the camera strolling alongside the floats at Burlington’s Mardi Gras parade. His work has appeared in local art galleries, as well as in his book of black-andwhite portraits of ’90s-era Burlington bands. Thorsen even served as Bernie Sanders’ official 2006 campaign photographer. If he ever comes calling to take your picture, you better answer the phone.

FILE: MATTHEW THORSEN

Vermonters, by and large, are outdoorsy peeps and probably don’t need to be told where to hike, bike, ski and swim. But we still want to know everyone’s favorites. Some voters were not in sharing moods, however, and to those of you who wrote, “It’s a secret, and I’m not telling,” we say, “Bummer.” Luckily, other voters were far more forthcoming. (And, in case you’re curious, the first-ever Daysie for a swimming spot goes to the Bolton Potholes.) You guys spilled your secrets on everything from best day hike (Camel’s Hump) to best place to take your parents (Church Street Marketplace). (Side note to the person who suggested bringing the ’rents to Planet Rock, the state’s lone strip club: LOL.) In other exciting news, Smugglers’ Notch shredded the gnar all the way to the Daysie for best ski/ride slope, leaving previous winner Stowe Mountain Resort in the, um, powder. And, new this year, we asked you to name the best place to kayak or canoe. You answered in a landslide: Lake Champlain. Oopsie Daysie! That’s a very big lake. Next year we’ll ask you to be more specific.

In winter this 2,400-acre, Austrian-style resort is a cross-country ski center. In summer, it offers hiking, horse-drawn wagon rides, birdwatching tours and Sunday concerts in the meadow. (700 Trapp Hill Rd., Stowe, 253-8511, trappfamily.com)

BEST PLACE TO SWIM

Bolton Potholes

A tucked-away gem for folks looking to cool off on hot summer days, the beautiful Bolton Potholes draw visitors from Chittenden County and beyond. Upsides: This natural swimming spot, with waterfalls flowing into a series of deep blue-green pools, is less treacherous than Huntington Gorge, there’s no entry fee and visitors go home sans chlorine residue. Downsides: Parking on the curvy access road is a hassle at best and, at worst, potentially deadly. Plus, unruly and inconsiderate visitors have burned enough bridges with the neighbors to justify them towing your illegally parked car. So if you go, be kind, pick up after yourself and don’t dive in headfirst! Bolton Valley Access Rd., Bolton

The lake view isn’t the only distinguishing feature of this cityowned graveyard in Burlington. Established in 1871, Lakeview was designed as a “garden cemetery,” full of ornamental vegetation, fountains and winding paths, where townsfolk might enjoy a Sunday picnic. The fountains have disappeared, but the leafy lanes CATHY RESMER remain, meandering ASSOCIATE past tombstones of PUBLISHER Vermonters including Union General George Stannard, who commanded troops at Gettysburg, and Warren Austin, the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Painter Charles Louis Heyde, Walt Whitman’s brother-in-law, is buried here, too, along with unnamed paupers and orphans. Need to do some serious thinking?
