votes in 172 categories. Unless you’re allergic to flowers, that’s nothin’ to sneeze at! And we can add to those numbers the 15 categories that were separated into “Inside Chittenden County” and “Outside Chittenden County.” (About that: In Vermont, the largest population is inside Chittenden County, so it’s tough for anyone outside of it to break into the final ballot — unless the category involves mountains. So whenever we saw a surge of votes for places not in Chittenden County, we split the category in order to recognize some farther-flung faves.) To keep things as fresh as a Daysie, we sprouted some new categories this year and weeded out some old ones. And, to celebrate our big anniversary, we gifted you an entire special bonus section. We’re calling it the Daylilies — it’s like the Daysies, but with a twist. That’s just one of the many surprises sprinkled in these pages. Which newcomer took home the Daysie for best chef? Which slope reached new heights, running away with the award for best place to ski and ride? Flip ahead to find out. Congrats to all of the Daysies winners! We hope you feel the love. And thanks, Seven Days readers, for voting. Flower power to the people. CAROLYN FOX

o you believe in flower power? We do. At a time when so much in the world seems so uncertain, we’re embracing our inner flower children and spreading peace and love in our community. We can’t help it — Seven Daysies season just turns us into one big ol’ love machine. The Daysies are the locals’ guide to the best of Vermont. Think of this special 15thanniversary issue, brought to you by Seven Days, as a bouquet of flowers from your fellow Vermonters — they’ve picked you the prettiest petals in the patch. If you’re looking for the best bars, restaurants, museums, theaters, shops, services and bands in the land, you’ll find them in these pages. So, how did we come to Daysie-crown these winners? Great question! It took two rounds of voting. First, folks wrote in their favorites for everything from best bookstore to barber and best day hike to dive bar. We read every single one of your nominations — srsly, all of ’em — and tallied the votes, selecting the top finalists in each category. And then we asked you to vote again, multiple-choice style, to be sure it was true love and not some fling. This year’s Daysies were, in fact, a bona fide love fest: 9,385 people cast 572,306 individual

It’s been another banner year in Vermont food. Just look at the diverse finalists for best new restaurant: a “fine diner,” a funky neighborhood joint, a pioneer in northern cuisine, a butcher shop that’s also a bar, and a farm-to-table restaurant/yoga studio/ cultural center. Our chefs, farmers and food producers bring something new to the table every single year. Instead of so many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the broth, they elevate our entire food scene. And, yes, there are some Daysies shake-ups along the way. Take the best chef category, which represents a changing of the guard. A number of new entrants knocked perennial Daysies winner and James Beard Award nominee Eric Warnstedt out of the running, allowing Misery Loves Co.’s Aaron Josinsky and Nathaniel Wade to capture the Daysie. It’s in good hands — they’re James Beard-nominated, too. And not to worry: Warnstedt’s Hen of the Wood defended its status as best restaurant. Revolution Kitchen, August First Bakery ArtsRiot s & Café, Pizzeria Verità and ArtsRiot’ new food truck all rolled away with wins over longtime Daysies favorites. Speaking of: An honorable mention goes to Leunig’s Bistro & Café Café, which continued on its quest for world — er, Daysies — domination, scooping up more nominations than perhaps any other biz. Let’s dig in, shall we?

Hunger Mountain Coop
By the banks of the Winooski River, Montpelier’s Hunger Mountain Coop is a dream for those who want to buy food grown and produced by their neighbors. The co-op stocks its 20,000 square feet with national natural brands plus 1,800 Vermont products — from kombucha to granola to the kale we all need to eat more of — making it easy to be a locavore. There’s an extensive health and beauty department, too, chockfull of natural remedies. Don’t know which elderberry syrup to buy? Ask. Staffers are super-knowledgeable and friendly. Shopping hungry? Sample the kitchen’s expansive selection of prepared foods — don’t miss Indian week if you like chutney and raita. Get yours to go, or eat in the café and watch the river flow by. 623 Stone Cutters Way, Montpelier • 223-8000 • hungermountain.coop

BEST NEW RESTAURANT
Monarch + the Milkweed
When Monarch announced its intriguing restaurant concept — “a pastry shop fine diner” — the buzz was big. Thanks to a culinary dream team hailing from highflying local operations such as Hen of the Wood, the Farmhouse Group and Prohibition Pig, the fare has lived up to the lofty expectations. Right in the heart of downtown Burlington, the fledgling eatery has stretched its wings and soared. It serves up biscuit breakfast sandwiches and buttery glazed cinnamon buns to a devoted fan club by morn and smoky bluefish sandwiches, corn dogs and Waldorf salads by noon and night. Whenever you go, it’ll definitely be good. But be warned: Those pastries — some of which are now available laced with cannabidiol — may become as necessary to your diet as milkweed to monarchs. 111 St. Paul St., Burlington, 448-3367 • monarchandthemilkweed.com

BEST VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT
Revolution Kitchen
It seems impossible, but between 2008 and 2013, Vermont’s largest city didn’t have a strictly vegetarian restaurant. Then came Revolution Kitchen. Owners Debra and Peter Maisel had operated a successful veggie eatery in the Hudson Valley and brought their very best dishes to Burlington. Omnivorous diners won’t miss the meat in plates such as crispy scallion pancakes with spicy aioli; goat-cheese-and-fig wontons with pistachios and maple-citrus vinaigrette; and seitan piccata with piquant lemon-caper sauce. Throw in the modern décor and wellcurated drink list, and Revolution reaches beyond the ethical into the sensual: It’s a great spot for date night. Don’t leave without trying Debra’s famous banana cream pie. 9 Center St., Burlington • 448-3657 • revolutionkitchen.com

A combo platter is also the way to go at El Cortijo: Pair your chorizo, carnitas or frijoles tacos with sides such as Spanish rice and greens with citrus vinaigrette. The especiales board showcases even more creative options and local ingredients. If the booths are full — as they often are — park yourself at the beautiful, handcrafted bar. Three sips into your blood-orange margarita, you might wish you had more votes to throw at this charming cantina. 189 Bank St., Burlington • 497-1668 • cortijovt.com

BEST LUNCH INSIDE CHITTENDEN COUNTY
August First Bakery + Café
The people have spoken, and it turns out that they want to talk to each other at lunch — or at least not stare at a laptop. Screen-free August First is Chittenden County’s lunch destination of choice, a highceilinged hot spot for big salads, housemade soups, meals in bowls and sandwiches on bread fresh from the bakery oven. The menu is a mix of homespun (BLT on baguette) and on-trend (avocado toast with feta, basil and roasted red peppers on seven-grain bread). It all goes down easy, just like the breezy café vibe. If you’re addicted to your devices and discover you can’t eat without reading, turn your attention to the writing on the wall: “August First” by Hayden Carruth. If the tender poem makes you tear up, a fudge brownie will restore your smile. 149 S. Champlain St., Burlington • 540-0060 • augustfirstvt.com

SEVEN DAYSIES 2017-18
It seems there’s something new every week in Vermont’s beverage world: Another craft brewery! Aromatic cocktail sprays! Wine in cans! And the rest of the world is watching, if not drooling. Our spirits are scoring international recognition, our brews are drawing hopheads from across the globe, and our bartenders are competing in cocktail throwdowns across the pond. Appropriately, we’d also like to bestow some awards upon our liquid overlords, be they cocktail shakers, coffee roasters, cider pressers, grape stompers or juice squeezers. This year’s Daysies go to a delightful elixir of old reliables and deserving newbies. Among those making their Daysies debuts: Dedalus Wine Shop, Bar & Market, Upper Deck Pub and Misery Loves Co. bartender Mike Dunn. And, notably, a new bar swooped in to rule them all: Waterworks Food + Drink, unseating its ’roundthe-rotary neighbor Mule Bar. We’d joke that there’s something in Winooski’s water, but we know it’s just good ingredients and great barkeeps. We’ll drink to that! Read on for the rest, in categories covering brewpubs, bouncers, Bloody Marys, baristas and beans — of the coffee variety, that is.

BEST BARTENDER
Mike Dunn (Misery Loves Co.) Some bartenders banter back and forth with their customers — about beer, wine, the Red Sox, whatever. Others keep verbiage to a minimum, assiduously avoiding eye contact except when you need a refill or the tab. At Misery Loves Co., bearded and bespectacled barman Mike Dunn is neither social butterfly nor gushing conversationalist. But he usually knows what you’re drinking long before you’ve glanced at the cocktail menu, whether your preferred potion is on that list or not. As he expertly mixes up your Seville Orange Milk Punch or your My Uncle Oswald (the latter with a Roald Dahl-inspired “snozzberry” shrub), pay attention for his wry one-liners. Dunn exudes a strange and wholly irresistible charm. 46 Main St., Winooski • 497-3989 • miserylovescovt.com

BEST PICKUP BAR
Red Square
If you want to get picked up, you’ve gotta lie down — on the black and red couches outside of Red Square on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace. Oh, if only you could — these couches are hard to snag on a summer Saturday night. Luckily, Red Square is a maze of opportunity for squeezing in and coupling up. You can belly up to the bar and sip a drink from a cocktail glass with a slinky, twisty stem. You can check out the scene in the alley, where live bands play on a raised stage. You can sit at a sidewalk table in the glow of the club’s little red lights and the delicious haze of grill smoke wafting from the nearby cheesesteak stand. And, if you can sneak past security, you and your newfound date can canoodle by the dumpsters. 136 Church St., Burlington • 859-8909 • Facebook

BEST WINE LIST
Dedalus Wine Shop, Market + Wine Bar
OLIVER PARINI
For many Burlington oenophiles, Dedalus is the place to buy wine. Why’s that? Because the purchasing team at the South End’s new wine shop, market and bar only stocks bottles it stands behind, 100 percent. Those vintages — sold at a variety of price points and sourced from around the world — taste of care and place and transport the drinker to a world far beyond the four walls within which they’re drinking. Since moving from Battery Street to Pine Street earlier this year, the shop pours dozens of its carefully curated wines by the glass in a charming, low-lit wine bar. Pro tip: Buy a bottle from the bar’s list at its sales-floor retail price and pair it with a small plate or three from chef Max Mackinnon. 388 Pine St., Burlington • 865-2368 • dedaluswine.com

Capitol Grounds Café
In the evening, folks who live, work, legislate and lobby in Montpelier fraternize at various city bars, from Three Penny Taproom to Charlie-O’s World Famous. But in the morning, you’ll find ’em all at Capitol Grounds. The bustling café — which roasts its own beans as 802 Coffee — has been in business since 1998. Hobnob with bikers in spandex and local business owners while you grab a Green Eggs & Ham sandwich on Red Hen Baking’s Mad River Grain bread or a hearty bowl of chili. Or hunker down to eavesdrop on political conversations with a coffee drink — these come in sizes ranging from the eight-ounce “conservative” to the 20-ounce “radical.” Wonder which one Gov. Phil Scott gets. 27 State St., Montpelier • 223-7800 • capitolgrounds.com

or the 15th anniversary of the Daysies, we thought we’d sneak in a big surprise: the first-ever Daylilies. What are they, exactly? Seven Days staffers’ own personal picks for what’s best in Vermont. Sharing is caring, after all. The unofficial categories, created by our writers, cover everything from best show of Vermont spirit to best word to say with a Vermont accent. This silly section celebrates — and sometimes pokes fun at — some of the state’s hidden gems. Readers did not vote on these. These winners will not receive Daysies plaques. Like actual daylilies, whose flowers typically last only 24 hours, these made-up awards are fun but fleeting. Who knows if they’ll be back next year? Enjoy them while you can.

Billed as “Vermont’s only real castle,” this 1867 mansion near downtown Rutland is a gorgeous spot for a wedding, private party … or ghost hunt. While daily property tours run into the fall, “haunted castle tours” in October find spookiness in the lush Victorian décor: hand-stenciled ceilings, a mounted boar’s head. To see what paranormal investigators have found there, check out Dark Knights Paranormal’s YouTube channel. 2708 West St., Proctor • 773-3284 • wilsoncastle.com
Adamant Blackfly Festival
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When Vermont gives you a plague of bloodthirsty black flies … don your mosquito netting and throw those suckers a party. At least, that’s what the village of Adamant does at its annual Blackfly Festival. “After a long, cold winter here in Adamant, we need something to celebrate, and God only knows we have plenty of black flies,” explains the fest’s website. Every June for the past 14 years, the townsfolk have turned out for “general mayhem” ranging from a Blackfly Pie Contest (featuring “black- and blood-themed confections”) to a Blackfly Parade & Fashion Show (“the Macy’s Day Parade of the Insect World!”). When it comes to meeting Vermont’s various bugs with hugs, Adamant flies high. Early June • Adamant Co-op • 223-5760 • blackflyfestival.org

TOWN DOING THE BEST JOB OF KEEPING VERMONT WEIRD
Glover
Winooski traffic circle
Plenty of stuff is weird in Vermont, from Burlington’s so-called “Foreskin House” to Leicester’s “Queen Connie” gorilla sculpture. But if we had to pinpoint the epicenter of weirdness on a map, it would surely be in the Orleans County town of Glover. This honor is largely thanks to the resident Bread and Puppet Theater and its barn packed to the rafters with politically radical puppets — some more than 15 feet tall. A mere five minutes down the road, the Museum of Everyday Life (another “turn-the-lights-on-whenyou-enter-and-off-when-you-leave” venue) catalogs the quotidian in all its strange glory. Exhibits have featured dust bunnies, Halubian bell-ringer costumes and broken mirrors. Glover, your bucolic hills are bizarre indeed. Keep on keepin’ weird. Pittsford Ice Cave Afraid of cramped spaces? Slither and slide your way to chilly liberation in the Pittsford Ice Cave. Yes, you have to walk through a lagoon and then crawl on all fours, but there’s a big payoff: a cave stretching 100 feet in one direction and rising about 60 feet. The ice in this hideaway typically melts by midsummer, but the cavern remains cool year-round. If you go: Wear a helmet and headlamp and bring an experienced caver. Pittsford • vermontcavers.org
BEST DIRT ROAD
Piney Woods Road Even though it’s only a few minutes from major thoroughfares such as Routes 7 and 116, Piney Woods Road feels isolated AF — almost like it’s straight out of Westeros or Narnia. Its dense canopy, adjacent babbling brook and rapid drop in elevation make this beautiful country lane a thrilling and memorable excursion. Between Parks Hurlburt Rd. and Hardscrabble Rd. in Monkton

Willey’s Store & Barr Hill Natural Area
STAFF PICKS The best picnic package in Vermont begins at Willey’s Store in Greensboro. For 177 years, the general store has been supplying the village on Caspian Lake with clothing, tools, books and food. These days, it also stocks world-renowned beer and cheese from two local producers: Hill Farmstead Brewery and Jasper Hill Farm, respectively. According to Jasper Hill cofounder Mateo Kehler, one optimal summer pairing of the two is Arthur and Harbison: “No need for dragging up a knife and cutting board — just bring a spoon and a bottle opener,” he notes. Provisions in hand, in-the-know locals head to nearby Barr Hill Natural Area. Spectacular views of the mountains, lake, idyllic open fields and peaceful, mossy woods converge to make this one gem of a picnic spot. BIGGEST BUZZKILL
Gov. Phil Scott During his gubernatorial campaign, Phil Scott promised to make Vermont more affordable. Then, in May, he vetoed a bill that would have permitted Vermonters to grow their own weed — free of charge — and said he’d check out a revised bill during the legislature’s June veto session. That didn’t happen, and now Vermont’s tokers must continue paying dealers for their dope — or fines when they’re busted for growing, smoking or otherwise possessing it. So much for affordability.

Nestled among the Millstone Trails in Barre Town Forest is an 18-hole discgolf course. Also: lots and lots of stunningly beautiful abandoned, pond-like quarry holes left over from the Granite City’s rockmining heyday. By hole five, the course demands tossing a driver over open water to find the basket. Better hope your aim is true, and maybe bring an extra disc or two — or scuba gear, if you’ve got a mind to go after it. 44 Brook St., Websterville • millstonetrails.com

Welcome to the best of Vermont’s arts and entertainment. Now you can sit back, relax and enjoy the show. When it comes to naming local singers and standups, museums and music festivals, and cinemas and stages, you guys picked some real winners. And your write-ins entertained, too. Special shout-out to the person who responded to our best karaoke category with: “Contradiction in terms.” We get it; belting out Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” in front of a room full of strangers — or, worse, having to endure someone else bomb it — is not everyone’s idea of a good time. Thanks for keepin’ it real. This year, a new winner stepped into the spotlight in the coveted category of best small live music hot spot. There’s a new top dog in trivia, too. A number of new music makers sang for their suppers and came out victorious. But no spoilers — in a section filled with master storytellers of all stripes, we know better than to give away the ending. Without further ado, let’s raise the curtain on this year’s A&E Daysies stars.

Katharine Montstream Katharine Montstream has been capturing Vermont’s beauty since she moved here from Connecticut — her first solo show was at the Daily Planet in 1988. Today, Montstream Studio is just a few blocks from the site of that debut, across the street from Burlington City Hall Park. The inviting studio and gallery space offers everything from greeting cards of floral watercolors to large-scale abstract oils of rural landscapes and the waterfront’s Moran Plant. Both broadly appealing and timeless, Montstream’s work continues to charm. 129 St. Paul St., Burlington • 862-8752 • kmmstudio.com

BEST FOLK GROUP
The DuPont Brothers
There’s something truly magical about watching siblings play music together. But what is it, exactly, that makes it so special? Is it their innate ability to read each other’s nonverbal cues? Or maybe it’s something ineffable — the indefinable essence of two voices perfectly blended together to form a singular entity. Burlington’s DuPont Brothers embody this genetic phenomenon. Since 2013, Zack and Sam, along with longtime collaborator and bassist Robinson Morse, have been enchanting audiences near and far with their plaintive strains of modern folk-rock. Their most recent release, Live at Deepwells, is a raw and revealing entry in their ever-growing catalog. dupontbrothersmusic.com

BEST MUSEUM
Its mission statement is “Destroy apathy,” and, over the last few years, the multipurpose hub in Burlington’s South End has made good on that promise. When it’s not hosting community discussions, film screenings, storytelling events, poetry slams or its increasingly popular trivia nights, ArtsRiot has become the place for consistently ahead-of-the-curve, cutting-edge live music. Other larger venues in the area have a fix on your all-time favorite bands and artists, but here you’ll discover something new. Local, regional, national and international mavericks from across the genre galaxy regularly grace its stage. Add in the killer sound system, potent potables and flexible capacity — about 150 to 350 people, depending on the event — and ArtsRiot never fails to deliver a memorable evening.

BEST PLACE TO PLAY POOL
Three Needs Brewery + Taproom
When it comes to nightspots for pool, Three Needs Brewery & Taproom is running the table. For the fourth consecutive year, Seven Days readers have voted the popular Burlington watering hole the top location for bank shots and scratching the eight ball. Long wait to get your hustle on? Bide your time on the nearby foosball table. Or grab one of the beers — derived from the owner’s recipe archive and brewed across town at Queen City Brewery — and a slice of the secretly great pizza and chill on the spacious back deck until your name comes up. Bring your A game, though: The competition is always fierce. 185 Pearl St., Burlington • 497-0119 • Facebook

JEB WALLACE-BRODEUR
In the shopping section of the Daysies, we can count on two things: 1. Vermonters are loyal, largely bestowing their affections on the same stores year after year; and 2. Vermonters love Outdoor Gear Exchange. Like, really love it. And when push comes to shove, this year’s results show that OGE comes out on top. The Burlington shop has earned a Daysie every year since the competition started in 2003. This turn around the sun, it scored four of the eight for which it was nominated, blowing away the competition in two categories (best women’s casual clothing, best secondhand store) in which it was a first-time finalist. OGE, you’ve got Daysies for days. Where are you going to hang them all? Kudos to other longtime winners Mirror Mirror, Pet Food Warehouse and Gardener’s Supply Company. And let’s welcome to the winners’ club Jamie Two Coats’ Toy Shop, EyeCare of Vermont, Vermont Gift Barn and Barge Canal Market. You made it! One final note: No, you’re not seeing double in best ski/snowboard shop. There are two winners. It was a tie! Enough with the drama. Read on for the shops that can’t be topped.

Salaam Boutique
When it comes to comfort, Salaam has you covered — literally. Founder and designer Andrea Miksic works out of a converted barn in Plainfield creating a wide array of clothing in stretchy, comfortable materials designed to work with a woman’s body, not against it. Her go-with-the-flow fashions are easily explained: Miksic (pictured here with store manager Sarah Lesser) got her start designing for dancers. Her flagship store in Montpelier carries dresses, skirts and tops in more patterns than you could ever need. There’s something for everyone, from geometric abstractions to swirling floral designs. Bonus points: The fabrics are suited to all kinds of activities, so no matter where the day takes you, you’ll arrive in style. 40 State St., Montpelier • 223-4300 • salaamclothing.com

BEST PET DAYCARE & BEST PET GROOMER
Vermonters know what they love, so when it comes to categories regarding important things like banks, real estate agencies, lodging and, yes, tattoos, they’re unlikely to look around. Those tried-and-true winners — including New England Federal Credit Union, Coldwell Banker, Trapp Family Lodge and Yankee Tattoo — clearly know how to keep the spark alive. But votes show that locals did stray in a handful of categories this year. It’s OK. The heart wants what it wants. Their new flames include Silver Threads Tailoring, Old Soul Barbershop, Essex Resort & Spa and Green Cab VT. No matter the relationship status, you can rest assured: These are all fantastic businesses that’ll get just about any job done.
Woof, woof! Who let the dogs out? Not Oh my DOG. Its responsible caretakers pride themselves on providing topnotch daycare and grooming services for pooches of all shapes and sizes. The business was founded in 2011 with a mission of prioritizing the health, safety and overall well-being of every dog that walks through its door. Whether that means showering a lonely pooch in cuddles or remembering how Fido likes his pills, Oh my DOG does it all. Staff will even upload pics of your pup to Facebook and give you monthly video updates so you don’t experience separation anxiety. What more could a dog owner want? 18 Lime Rock Rd., South Burlington • 489-5273 • ohmydogvt.com

Old Soul Barbershop
If we had a Daysies category for best store logo, the one at Old Soul Barbershop in Winooski — featuring a skull with a pompadour above a pair of crossed straight razors — would be the odds-on favorite. Owner Christian DuBrul and his tattooed crew of badass barbers could double their income by hawking bowling shirts sporting that design. But it’s not the sign in the front window that keeps the fellas coming back for more. It’s the fact that Old Soul offers the sharpest flattops, high-and-tights, business trims and crew cuts around, with hot-towel treatments and facial-hair designs second to none. Props for offering discounts to kids, senior citizens and civil servants, too. This is as traditional as cutting-edge barbering gets. 164 Main St., Winooski • 399-2213 • oldsoulvt.com

Silver Threads Tailoring
Mark Twain (supposedly) once said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society.” Not included in that statement: People whose clothes fit their bodies feel and look more comfortable. We live in a world of fast fashion, but sartorial spirits know it’s better to find quality pieces that will last. Those threads often require a little nip and tuck — because, regardless of where they’re procured, most clothes don’t fit perfectly straight off the rack. That’s where Silver Threads comes in. Downtown tailor Mihn “Mindy” La will pinch in the waistline of that sheath dress you said you would wear last summer, shorten Dad’s suit jacket to fit your frame or hem those dress pants that drag around your heels. Don’t disappoint Mark Twain. Get ye to the tailor. 34 Church St., Suite 7, Burlington • 658-8050 • Facebook

BEST PLACE TO SWIM & BEST PLACE TO KAYAK/CANOE
Waterbury Reservoir
When Lake Champlain inevitably turns blue-green, savvy locals know where to go: Waterbury Reservoir. The state’s ninthlargest body of water is also among its prettiest and most accessible — and, just as importantly, cleanest. Nestled in the foothills of the Green Mountains, Little River and Waterbury Center state parks offer well-maintained swimming beaches and lots of amenities, including boat rentals. Whether you want to lounge in the lake or paddle on it, the reservoir has everything you need to enjoy those endless summer days — which are actually ending in, like, a month. 344 Little River Rd., Waterbury • 244-7103 • 177 Reservoir Rd., Waterbury Center • 244-1226 • vtstateparks.com
Whatever the weather, most Vermonters make it a point to get outside and play — on snow-covered slopes, freshly mown fairways, hiking and biking trails, and in sparkling swimming holes. While most of these special places don’t have a wall on which to hang an award, it’s important for us to recognize them nonetheless. Isn’t easy access to Mother Nature why we all live here, after all? So let’s celebrate our favorite spots to recreate — and perhaps discover some new ones, too. Perennial winners Mount Philo State Park, Lake Willoughby and Shelburne Farms remind us of what makes the great outdoors so great. And newcomer Waterbury Reservoir truly shined this year, earning not one but two Daysies for best place to swim and best place to kayak/ canoe. Finally, in the brand-new category of best guided tour, Ben & Jerry’s scooped up the win. Sweet.

Come for the comical fashion and marginal exercise, stay for the lush greens and fairways of the championship-length course at Kwiniaska Golf Club. The Shelburne course is a perennial local favorite, having scored nine Daysies wins since 2006. It’s not hard to see why. Once upon a time, in 1978, two regular guys named Ben and Jerry had an idea to sell homemade ice cream out of a renovated Burlington gas station. Their plan was so crazy that it worked — the original $12,005 investment blossomed into a business so successful that it became a subsidiary of Unilever, with plenty of exciting moments along the way. Immerse yourself in the company’s sweet story — and the magic of turning cream and sugar into a delectable cold confection — on a guided tour at Ben & Jerry’s Waterbury factory. Don’t miss the infamous Flavor Graveyard, honoring the terminated tenures of pints past. Economic Crunch, anyone? 1281 Route 100, Waterbury • 882-2047 • benjerry.com
