Survival Guide: Tessa Valyou Age: 33 Occupation: co-owner, New Duds Screen Printing & Illustration Town: Burlington

essa Valyou started New Duds Screen Printing & Illustration in 2008 with her beau, Torrey Valyou. The now-married college sweethearts — they met at the University of Vermont — have since grown their business into a five-person operation that prints dope illustrations on soft goods. You’ll spot their original designs on tees all around town and their custom printing on merch for area favorites such as Winooski restaurant Misery Loves Co., Four Quarters Brewing and punk-rock band Rough Francis.

Valyou, who learned to sew from her mom, began her own line of printed bags called Foliage Handbags shortly after New Duds opened. Muted colors and roughand-tumble fabrics designed to stand up to Vermont’s seasons are her stock-in-trade. When she’s not churning out printed products, Valyou can be found running, reading or hanging with her two tots, ages 4 and 2. Store I could spend all day in: Birdfolk Collective in Winooski. I sell my bags there, but every time I go in, it smells so good and it’s so lovely and fun to look at every little thing. I love seeing all the

hard work and product lines of domestic artists and craftspeople all in one place.

Local oddity I love: The Chief Grey Lock sculpture in Battery Park. The artists who did it in the 1970s created a series of sculptures — one in each state — as a tribute to local Native American history. My husband did a drawing and paper print of the sculpture that is a favorite of mine. Where you can find me on date night: We love to have our date nights be with a few friends. We love going to Pork & Pickles BBQ in Essex Junction or American Flatbread for drinks and pizza. We usually end up back at someone’s house or apartment to play games and chat. What’s your favorite way to get outside? I love running everywhere. From our house I can get to the Burlington Bike Path, the Intervale Center and Ethan Allen Park easily, so those are my go-to spots. But I also love to head down to Red Rocks Park for great trails with lots of hill work or my old UVM cross-country routes up Spear Street to Overlook Park. The view from the top is worth the traffic and the climb. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Slowing down and enjoying the sun on your cheeks and a breath of air is so essential. And, always, you need a sense of humor. From the weather to the people, the ability to laugh at whatever life throws at you around here is very helpful. — SADIE WILLIAMS

hen he took over the family business at age 21, Earl Handy became the third in three generations to man the counter — and flattop griddle — at Handy’s Lunch since it opened in 1945. His father, Robert, swapped the joint’s original counter for a U-shaped formica one in 1958. But the neighborhood diner on the corner of Maple and South Champlain streets still feels like a throwback. Its cream-and-red napkin dispensers advise patrons to “Have a Coke” — the classic cola helps wet whistles amid friendly banter about politics or the Red Sox and Yankees. (Earl is a Yankees fan, and he’s not shy about it.) For decades, Handy’s has been where Burlingtonians go for a cheap and filling breakfast — two eggs with home fries and toast run just $5.25. At lunch, there’s the Texas Cheeseburger smothered in American cheese and chili sauce, plus deli-style sandwiches and, most crucially, the crunchiest tater tots in town. Favorite day trip: Granby Zoo in Granby, Québec. We’ve gone there every year for the past four years with our twins. It’s our No. 1 destination, and it’s only an hour and a half away. I used to go there when I was little, so we’re bringing the tradition back. Best place for a summer dip: I love Shelburne Town Beach. It’s one of my favorite places. We had a cottage at Colchester Point when I was a kid, and it reminds me of there — the view, the water, everything about it. Favorite night out in Burlington: Vermont Lake Monsters games at Centennial Field. That is our go-to for a fun night out — watch a game and get a meal at the ballpark. I think last year we caught 20-something games. My son is a superfan — his room is Lake Monster green.

Preferred edible pick-me-up: A steak at the Upper Deck Pub at the Windjammer in South Burlington. I know it’s always going to be perfect, and it’s like going to a friend’s house over there. Never-fail family traditions: My twins and I always go to Shelburne Orchards for apples and to the Charlotte Berry Farm to pick berries in the summer. The berry farm has really great blueberry creemees. It’s a nice reward, like, After you pick blueberries for Dad’s diner, you can cool down with a creemee. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Handy’s, and more Handy's! No, just kidding. A good winter hat — I wear my winter hat all the time. And a sense of — just relax. Enjoy it. We’re not in a city. We don’t have bad traffic jams or millions of people or subways. hey may still be dealing with locker combinations, midterms and gym class, but the members of Muslim Girls Making Change are also making waves nationwide. Since 2016, young slam poets Hawa Adam, Balkisa Abdikadir, Lena Ginawi and Kiran Waqar — all seniors at Burlington and South Burlington high schools — have used their words to challenge gender roles, fight racism and stand up for social justice. In their short time together, the girls have competed at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, D.C., and earned a spot on the Huffington Post’s list of “17 Muslim American Women Who Made America Great in 2016.” “When we leave an event and a person tells us that they were inspired and want to make a change, it is the most amazing thing,” says Waqar. “If they take action, just imagine the ripple effect.” While we await that sea change, What’s Good quizzed Adam and Waqar on what they do in their downtime. Favorite thing to do in Burlington: KW: Enjoy the waterfront with a creemee. I get it from the creemee store near ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain or Burlington Bay Market & Café. Favorite place to write poetry: KW: The UVM green in front of the water fountain. It’s really pretty and relatively peaceful. On Facebook and Instagram, I follow: KW: For Vermonters, mostly

politicians. We have some good ones, so it’s nice to see them doing good in turbulent times. One prominent one would be Kesha Ram (@KeshaRam). We also follow and work with Emerge Vermont a lot, which promotes Democratic women. Favorite local performing-arts space: HA: I love the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. When I was younger and went there more frequently, they always had these really insane shows with amazing live music.

Favorite local artist: HA: Our coach, Rajnii Eddins, is very admirable. He speaks up about the same issues that I am passionate about and is always there at as many Vermont events as he possibly can commit to. Not to mention, he hosts poetry sessions every Friday at the Fletcher Free Library. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: KW: An open mind and creativity. Curator Chris Thompson (left) is the rogue mind operating this modest, transitory space on the second floor of the school’s Center for Communication & Creative Media. The gallery offers a peculiar breadth of works and workshops, from paper made with underwear by the Peace Paper Project to an interactive VR sculpture by “digital nomad” Fernando Ramallo. A small house on campus allows Thompson — who also runs the Generator, a nonprofit maker space in BTV's South End — to host national and international artists who may not otherwise find themselves in our fair city. What’s not a joke at the Vermont Comedy Club? Just one thing: its status as the state’s undisputed venue for all things funny. Hilarious husband-and-wife team Nathan Hartswick and Natalie Miller opened the 150-seat theater and bar in 2015; it's served as a catalyst for Vermont’s growing comedy scene ever since. In addition to showcasing major standups such as Kevin McDonald of the Kids in the Hall fame, Jen Kirkman and Nikki Glaser, VCC is home base for local improv troupe the Unmentionables. f you’ve ever set foot in a Burlington bar or club, you’ve likely encountered effervescent bouncer extraordinaire Mikey van Gulden. As the youngest of 10 children, he’s always been accustomed to crowds. Raised in Williston, his first jobs in Burlington included washing dishes at the long-gone Déjà Vu Café and working the elevator at the equally extinct Magram’s department store. He eventually settled into a career in event security: Van Gulden spent two decades working crowds and spotting

Fascinating local oddity: The hidden paintings that live behind the drop ceiling on the top floor of the Howard Opera House building on Church Street. In the last few years, Kat Wright has become one of the biggest and most sought-after acts in Vermont. Originally billed as Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band, the octet grew out of a weekly classicsoul jam session at Burlington’s Radio Bean. The sultry maven recently ditched the cumbersome extension for a few reasons. First, she was tired of being introduced as Kat Wright and the “Abominable Snow Band.” More importantly, she and her band don’t limit their repertoire to simply retro soul music. When brothers Julian, Urian and Bobby Hackney Jr. started Rough Francis, the band was meant to be a tribute to their father and uncles’ seminal 1970s Detroit proto-punk trio, Death. The young Hackneys soon began writing and recording their own music and fast became one of the loudest and rowdiest bands in the 05401. Death’s punk influence remains, but Rough Francis’ reach extends further into rock-and-roll history, mining the ’60s for a slightly looser, garagerock vibe.

Steamy, soulful and sensuous, Burlington’s smalltalker specialize in a sleek brand of neo-soul that might best be described as baby-makin’ music. The 10-person ensemble draws from a range of styles, including hip-hop, funk, jazz and R&B. While several members handle lead vocals, the star of the show is powerhouse Steph Heaghney, who is quickly ascending as one of Vermont’s most dynamic singers.

Originally from Connecticut, singersongwriter Hannah Fair developed a taste for Burlington while on her first monthlong tour at age 17. She told her bandmates then that she would live here someday. ollin Hale has lived in Vermont most of his life. But it was during a brief stint in Phoenix, Ariz. — in fourth through sixth grades — that he discovered skateboarding. By the time his family moved back to Underhill, Hale was hooked. “Skateboarding’s not for everyone, but the people that it is for, it really takes a hold of your life,” he explains. These days, Hale is one of just a handful of Vermont skaters who have gone pro — he joined LA’s Warco Skateboards in April 2016. While most in his industry make it big by moving out to California, Hale has stayed put. Why?

Plus, “Vermont, from a skateboarding perspective, is very different from anyplace else. It’s hard to do the sport from here. It’s rainy and it snows and it’s not the best pavement. When you can make it from here, it seems even more special.” When he’s not skating locally and at parks around the world, Hale can be found foraging for mushrooms, gathering his own spring water or pursuing his other passion — cooking — in the kitchen at Stowe’s Doc Ponds. Where to skate in Burlington: The “Jersey Barrier” on the unfinished section of the highway [off of Pine Street] — because of the do-it-yourself aspect. People have built concrete ramps there. It’s in a zone where you don’t really get

At 4,393 feet, Mount Mansfield is the tallest mountain in the state. There are numerous climbs to the summit, but we prefer the Sunset Ridge Trail from Underhill State Park. Much of the 3.3-mile trek is above the treeline, which guarantees truly jawdropping views.

Disc golf courses are popping up all over Vermont, but this spot is the gold standard. It was one of the first courses in the state, and it remains one of the most popular and best maintained. Plus, the mountain views are hard to beat.

Get a bird’s-eye view of the Green Mountains while shooting down 4,500 feet of zip lines at Smugglers’ Notch Resort. Don’t have a need for speed? Try the treetop obstacle course.

mily Packard has been gunning her engines since she was 9 years old. That was the first time she got behind the wheel of a race car — admittedly, a go-kart — and she’s rarely slowed down since. The 20-year-old Community College of Vermont business major is a thirdgeneration Vermonter. She’s also the youngest race-car driver to compete in the American Canadian Tour — and its only female. When she’s not on the track, Packard works in her family’s business, Packard Fuels in East Montpelier; she commutes there daily from her Granite State home just over the border. But 2017 has been a slow race season for Packard. Why? She’s been busy planning her September 2018 wedding to her fiancé — fellow driver and longtime competitor Shawn Swallow. Has Packard ever beaten him on the track? “Yeah,” she says with a smile. “Every time.” That explains why the couple won’t merge their pit crews after tying the knot. As Packard puts it, “We’re way too competitive for that.” Where you can find me on a Friday night: Because I have a really close family, we do a lot of family things together. One of our favorite places to go is the indoor go-kart track at Essex Speedway & Action Center. The facility can control our speed, you know. Sometimes I think that when they see all our racing shirts, they turn it down on us. But usually, we’re bumping and banging and get spoken to more than once. Favorite roads to drive in Vermont: One of my favorites is Route 14, the road from East Montpelier to Hardwick. I just find it a really peaceful ride, and I do my best thinking on that road. My other favorite would be Route 2 from

East Montpelier to Lancaster, N.H. I travel it every day. I think it’s really, really pretty, especially right before you get into New Hampshire where you can see the White Mountains. Preferred pit stop for a bite to eat: The Steak House Restaurant in Barre.

What every Vermonter should experience: Every Vermonter should go to Thunder Road SpeedBowl in Barre at least once. And if you have the opportunity to go in the pit, you should, because it’s such a nice atmosphere. It’s a little more close up with all the drivers and the pit crews. Anybody can go back there. There’s also Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven. Shorttrack racing is awesome!

Hello! We’re in Vermont. The question should really be, what can’t you do here? Springtime — aka mud season — is all about walking paved trails and riding the bike path. In summer, head down to the lake and try a paddleboarding class with Paddlesurf Champlain. Some yoga studios offer outdoor classes, and there’s always canoeing or kayaking. In the fall, hike up Mount Mansfield and surprise your sweetie with a favorite treat at the top. Skiing and snowboarding are the obvious winter choices — but you could also hit up Cairns Arena for ice skating or the Jay Peak indoor water park for those “too cold to go outside” days. Speaking of which… Sex. A stay-at-home date between the sheets? Now, that’s my kind of workout.

Start packing a lunch, I guess. Bring food from home or grab some of the amazing prepared eats from Healthy Living Market and Café on Dorset Street or City Market/Onion River Co-op downtown. When it’s warm, you can take your goodies to City Hall Park or the waterfront and soak up some sun. You just might meet someone new along the way! (Wink, wink.) That said, Burlington’s a small town, and it’s common to run into exes — so do yourself a favor and learn to deal. Don’t completely change your routine and let him monopolize your favorite places. And remember, he probably feels awkward about seeing you, too. So play nice when your paths cross and know that it’ll get easier. Just think: Soon you can skip the awkward chitchat and move on to a polite nod.

Can I get an STD from oral sex? And where can I get tested? — WORRYWART The short answer to your first question is yes. My girlfriend works super late downtown, and I worry about her safety. What can I do to help keep her safe? — SAFETY FIRST What a conscientious partner you are! It’s such a bummer that we even have to worry about this, but here are some tips: Encourage her to buddy up with a coworker — they can walk out together, head to one vehicle and drive to the other car. If she’s walking all the way home, she should keep to busy or well-lit paths and avoid distracting activities such as talking on the phone or listening to music. She should also text someone before she leaves work — and make sure her phone is charged. Additionally, she might want to consider carrying pepper spray and taking a self-defense class at the Safety Team in South Burlington. The upside? Rallying your partner to be empowered is way sexy.
