For the sake of justice and the local economy ...

Dearest studious students,

Hope you had a rad summer. We sure did. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” (Dr. Seuss) Thusly, we of pontificating Pancakia, us Cake Eaters and Creperoos, all of them localvorians and many-a-whosywho’s, we one and all, mellifluously submit to you:

LEGALIZE IT! We support local entrepreneurship, creativity, and a fair and just society. Prohibition has failed and is causing more damage than responsible legalization will. Vermonters should support artisanal cannabis just as we do brewers, distillers, farmers, musicians, and entrepreneurs of all kinds. Write your legislator: legislature.vermont.gov

Survival Training HOW TO STAY ALIVE — AND THRIVE — IN BURLINGTON BY DAN BOLLES

Residents of the idyllic hamlet of Burlington, Vt., firmly believe in that age-old Darwinian axiom: survival of the fittest.

WELCOME TO VT How can you tell? Well, not to get all braggy, but your newly adopted lakeside hometown annually ranks among the healthiest cities in the country. And thanks to Vermont’s famously back-to-the-land, selfsufficient ethos, BTV is a good place to be when the shit hits the fan. So if you’re here to hunker down — for college, for work, for zombie attacks, for a scary U.S. presidency — What’s Good has some survival advice for you. The WG staff has painstakingly combed the Queen City (that’s another nickname for BTV, BTW) to bring you the insider intel you need to stay alive and thrive in your new surroundings. This handy guide is packed with

8

WHAT’S GOOD

2017-18

preparedness pointers both practical (such as surviving the winter) and fun (where to get a craft beer buzz, shred mountains or lounge by the lake). You don’t have to thank us. But you’re welcome. In this book, you’ll find recommendations for what to do, see, eat, drink and hear. Which local restaurants should you frequent? Which Vermont bands do you need to add to your Spotify playlists? Which festivals should be on your calendar, stat? The answers are just pages away. You'll also discover dozens of ways to enjoy the great outdoors, from skiing and swimming to mini golf and disc golf. And get shopping suggestions for where to gear up — as well as where to snag cheap home goods and rare used records. And we’ll clue you into some

of the peculiarities of life in Vermont. Pop quiz: Raise your hand if you know what a “flatlander” is. (Hint: If you’re reading this, you probably are one. But turn to page 14 for the answer.) For newcomers and longtime residents alike, What’s Good aims to highlight the very best of Burlington (and beyond). But it won’t tell you everything — there’s much more to explore. By using this guide as a starting point to surviving the urban-ish wilds of Burlington, you’ll be well on your way to doing just that. wg

Survival Tips To point you in the right direction, we’ve sprinkled some life-saving tips throughout this book. Here’s the first.

In case of emergency, keep a “go bag”packed with essential items. Think clean water, duct tape and a can of Heady Topper. (JK about that last one.) Throughout What’s Good, we’ll introduce you to some “survival guides” — read: notable locals — who’ll tell you what to pack. And may we also recommend the following? Seven Days: Vermont’s award-winning newsweekly (and What’s Good’s sister publication) comes out every Wednesday and contains vital info on living here. You can pick up a copy — for free — at more than 1,100 locations. Each issue features music listings, album reviews, a calendar of local events, cartoons, political coverage, personals, food news, job ads, and in-depth stories and interviews. Download the Seven Days app, follow us on social media or visit sevendaysvt.com to keep up.

Survival Guide: Tessa Valyou Age: 33 Occupation: co-owner, New Duds Screen Printing & Illustration Town: Burlington

PPING T

essa Valyou started New Duds Screen Printing & Illustration in 2008 with her beau, Torrey Valyou. The now-married college sweethearts — they met at the University of Vermont — have since grown their business into a five-person operation that prints dope illustrations on soft goods. You’ll spot their original designs on tees all around town and their custom printing on merch for area favorites such as Winooski restaurant Misery Loves Co., Four Quarters Brewing and punk-rock band Rough Francis.

Valyou, who learned to sew from her mom, began her own line of printed bags called Foliage Handbags shortly after New Duds opened. Muted colors and roughand-tumble fabrics designed to stand up to Vermont’s seasons are her stock-in-trade. When she’s not churning out printed products, Valyou can be found running, reading or hanging with her two tots, ages 4 and 2. Store I could spend all day in: Birdfolk Collective in Winooski. I sell my bags there, but every time I go in, it smells so good and it’s so lovely and fun to look at every little thing. I love seeing all the

hard work and product lines of domestic artists and craftspeople all in one place.

GOOD DEAL

American-made products last longer, support our community, our economy, and the planet. Come discover the goods that’ll make mom proud and your friends jealous.

Local oddity I love: The Chief Grey Lock sculpture in Battery Park. The artists who did it in the 1970s created a series of sculptures — one in each state — as a tribute to local Native American history. My husband did a drawing and paper print of the sculpture that is a favorite of mine. Where you can find me on date night: We love to have our date nights be with a few friends. We love going to Pork & Pickles BBQ in Essex Junction or American Flatbread for drinks and pizza. We usually end up back at someone’s house or apartment to play games and chat. What’s your favorite way to get outside? I love running everywhere. From our house I can get to the Burlington Bike Path, the Intervale Center and Ethan Allen Park easily, so those are my go-to spots. But I also love to head down to Red Rocks Park for great trails with lots of hill work or my old UVM cross-country routes up Spear Street to Overlook Park. The view from the top is worth the traffic and the climb. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Slowing down and enjoying the sun on your cheeks and a breath of air is so essential. And, always, you need a sense of humor. From the weather to the people, the ability to laugh at whatever life throws at you around here is very helpful. — SADIE WILLIAMS

SCOUTING OUT BTV'S SECONDHAND SHOPS

Barge Canal Market

BY RACHEL ELIZABETH JONES & SADIE WILLIAMS Vermonters recycle pretty much everything — bottles, altweekly newspapers, significant others, etc. Clothing, décor and furniture are no exception. There are plenty of thrift and consignment stores around town to flex your creative muscles and scoop up fabulous finds on the cheap. Here’s our guide to tracking down treasures that'll save a pretty penny while reducing your environmental impact. They'll also keep you looking fresh — ethically.

Uptown Funk In and around the Queen City, there are a few clutch places to score designer names for cheap. SHALOM SHUK MARKETPLACE OF PEACE at the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue is the place to start — it tends to have bigname items in good-to-great condition. Commes des Garçons cape for $5, anyone? Plus, sales are donated to local nonprofits. If you’re looking for a funkier twist on designer resale, check out locally owned DIRT CHIC on Main Street. You’ll find a range of styles without having to do too much digging. RACKK & RUIN, in a small, second-story shop on Pine Street, carries a gorgeous selection of handmade Rackk & Ruin

Make off with college students’ unwanted household goods — think furniture, rugs, electronics and more — at the Chittenden Solid Waste District’s Spring Move Out Project, held on Buell and Loomis streets Barge every May. Canal Get the Market details at cswd.net. Thanks, college students!

jewelry plus a curated assortment of used naturalfiber clothing. Think silk and cotton blouses, deftly distressed denim, and too-cool-for-school leather jackets. The selection is small, but quality is high. And if you’re tragically hip, don’t miss PROJECT OBJECT VINTAGE, owner Sam duPont sells everything from silver Mexican jewelry to vintage Levis to tooled leather belts in his downtown studio and on Etsy. Pony-hair purse? Got it. Fringed leather jacket? Check. POV also occasionally organizes pop-up events around town.

Costume Party It’s Halloween. You’re not crafty. What do you do? Give up the (sheet) ghost and head to OLD GOLD or

BATTERY STREET JEANS.

The former carries an array of costumes that Old Gold will make your mouth water. Prices are a bit steeper at the Main Street boutique, but who can say no to cowboy boots that you’ll wear well into your eighties? Battery Street Jeans, on the other hand, is best for those with explosive style and pinched wallets. You’re sure to find glory in the racks of faux furs, primo men’s jackets and women’s dresses from the 1960s on up. VHS dorks won’t be disappointed by the selection here, either. F to College Street, neither of which are Battery Street. We know. It’s weird.) While you’re there, don’t miss WILD CAT SISTER’S HEARTSICK BOUTIQUE, the store-withina-store offering adorable folk kitsch for way below market value. If you insist on getting crafty, hit the POSSIBILITY SHOP at the First Congregational Church for dirt-cheap garb that you’ll have minimal guilt about chopping up or dyeing. Keep a lookout for the bag sales, too — whatever you can fit into a bag costs just a buck.

Mixed Media Dressing your body is important. But what about dressing your brain? Here are some tips for enriching your noggin. For books, the first stop is CROW BOOKSHOP. The cozy Church Street shop carries an assortment of new and used tomes. Also check Speaking out SPEAKING VOLUMES on Volumes Pine Street for thousands of titles on virtually any topic imaginable. Then head to SPEAKING VOLUMES’ second location, just across the way, for music media. Dig through the stacks for hipster records and jazzy vinyl, as well as record players and speakers. Over on South Winooski, PURE POP RECORDS is a basement record store dishing out quality secondhand tapes, records and CDs. Get in to get down.

EDGE SIMPLE PAY

Home Economics Your house is your temple — or something like that. So dress it accordingly. RESOURCE is ground zero for filling out that new pad, whether your taste is Ikea or Marie Antoinette. Vintage trunks at fair prices are not uncommon here, and the place is usually overflowing with fun fixer-uppers. If you’re looking for the odd door, knob or sconce, visit the RESOURCE BUILDING MATERIAL STORE just down Pine Street. Midcentury-modern geeks and those in search of upscale furniture should check out BARGE CANAL MARKET for well-loved (and well-cared-for) furniture and housewares from the 1950s onward. Good Buy A SAMPLING OF WHAT BURLINGTON HAS IN STORE

BY WHAT'S GOOD STAFF

Figuring out where to shop in Burlington isn’t rocket science: For the most part, you can just head to the Church Street Marketplace. But you work hard for the money — so hard for it, honey — so let’s get a little more specific about where to spend it. Once a year, Vermonters vote on everything from best furniture store to best shoe shop in the Seven Daysies readers’ picks. Shop the abridged list of past nominees and winners below knowing there’s not a dud in the bunch. Want more? Flip to page 85 for some stellar gear stores, and visit sevendaysvt.com/daysies for the complete Daysies guide. wg

Phoenix Books 191 Bank St., Burlington; 2 Carmichael St., Essex, phoenixbooks.biz Like a certain bird rising from the ashes of a decimated print media landscape — thnx, internet — Phoenix Books has been plying Vermonters with sweet, sweet paper pages since opening its Essex location in 2007. Since then, the badass bookstore has expanded to Burlington, Rutland and Chester. Judging by the growth of the mini-empire, it seems Vermonters have had their say: Books are here to stay. hen he took over the family business at age 21, Earl Handy became the third in three generations to man the counter — and flattop griddle — at Handy’s Lunch since it opened in 1945. His father, Robert, swapped the joint’s original counter for a U-shaped formica one in 1958. But the neighborhood diner on the corner of Maple and South Champlain streets still feels like a throwback. Its cream-and-red napkin dispensers advise patrons to “Have a Coke” — the classic cola helps wet whistles amid friendly banter about politics or the Red Sox and Yankees. (Earl is a Yankees fan, and he’s not shy about it.) For decades, Handy’s has been where Burlingtonians go for a cheap and filling breakfast — two eggs with home fries and toast run just $5.25. At lunch, there’s the Texas Cheeseburger smothered in American cheese and chili sauce, plus deli-style sandwiches and, most crucially, the crunchiest tater tots in town. Favorite day trip: Granby Zoo in Granby, Québec. We’ve gone there every year for the past four years with our twins. It’s our No. 1 destination, and it’s only an hour and a half away. I used to go there when I was little, so we’re bringing the tradition back. Best place for a summer dip: I love Shelburne Town Beach. It’s one of my favorite places. We had a cottage at Colchester Point when I was a kid, and it reminds me of there — the view, the water, everything about it. Favorite night out in Burlington: Vermont Lake Monsters games at Centennial Field. That is our go-to for a fun night out — watch a game and get a meal at the ballpark. I think last year we caught 20-something games. My son is a superfan — his room is Lake Monster green.

burritos quesadillas Tacos & Salads The Chuck Norris

Preferred edible pick-me-up: A steak at the Upper Deck Pub at the Windjammer in South Burlington. I know it’s always going to be perfect, and it’s like going to a friend’s house over there. Never-fail family traditions: My twins and I always go to Shelburne Orchards for apples and to the Charlotte Berry Farm to pick berries in the summer. The berry farm has really great blueberry creemees. It’s a nice reward, like, After you pick blueberries for Dad’s diner, you can cool down with a creemee. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Handy’s, and more Handy's! No, just kidding. A good winter hat — I wear my winter hat all the time. And a sense of — just relax. Enjoy it. We’re not in a city. We don’t have bad traffic jams or millions of people or subways. Just enjoy the fact that you can run into 10 people you know at the grocery store and have time to chat with them. — HANNAH PALMER EGAN

Meal Deals DINING AND DRINKING SPECIALS BY THE DAY

BY HANNAH PALMER EGAN

Eating out ain’t cheap — but sometimes it’s necessary. Empty fridge? Hot date? Just want to live a little? These can take a toll on your wallet. Avoid a state of emergency by familiarizing yourself with the Queen City's daily dining and drinking deals. This handy cheat sheet to "meals ready to eat" will help you track down $1 pints, $2 tacos, $3 maki rolls and more. wg

Wondering where to line up for Heady Topper? Don’t. Queueing up for beer is a sure sign that you’re a flatlander. Instead, order a can at most BTV restaurants, or sample Vermont’s many other delicious craft beers.

Daily Specials SOCIAL HOUR, ARTSRIOT: Select plates — including chef George Lambertson’s juicy 400 Burger and popular popcorn chicken — are half price from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Also weekdays: $3 beer specials. EARLY-BIRD SPECIAL, BLUEBIRD BARBECUE: From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. daily, $30 summons three smoked meats (half portions) and four sides at this barbecue joint. That’s a solid meal for two. Alternatively, $10 scores you a burger topped with bacon jam, cheddar, secret sauce and pickles — plus a side. DUFF HOUR, THREE NEEDS BREWERY & TAPROOM: Every weekday starting at 4 p.m., Three Needs taps a special Duff Hour keg. $1 pours last until the keg is kicked, and reruns of “The Simpsons” play on bar TVs for the duration. D’oh! Almost forgot: Some nights, the pub throws in $1 pizza slices, too. BISTRO DINNER, LEUNIG’S BISTRO & CAFÉ: Every day from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and the last hour before closing, Church Street’s Frenchiest spot offers two courses for $17.50. Start with a bowl of soup au pistou, then move on to salade Niçoise, steak frites or hearty boeuf Bourguignon. Can’t pronounce any of that? The delicious food and small(er) bill are worth the embarrassment of trying. OYSTER HOUR, HEN OF THE WOOD: Enjoy $1 oysters daily from 4 to 5 p.m. and 10 to 11 p.m. at Burlington’s farm-to-table hot spot.

So, it’s morning — or not — and you’re in need of a sleep-defying pick-me-up. Word to the wise: Don’t just curb that caffeine craving at the first coffeehouse you come across. Perhaps you’re looking for a quiet spot to sit and get some work done. Maybe it’s a more social sip that you seek — in the company of a colleague or among interesting strangers. Or let’s say you’re a nextlevel nerd on the hunt for obscure single-source beans known only to the coffee illuminati. Whatever your pleasure, Burlington’s got a café for you.

Go early and hole up near the picture windows overlooking Main Street — the high-traffic area provides a constant stream of local color. Drifter's 156 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington, driftersvt.com It took a while for Queen City residents to discover Drifter's, which opened in the Old North End in June 2016. From the kimchi ramen bowls made with duck broth and house-smoked bacon to the barbecue pulled-pork sliders, everything is top quality and made from scratch. The fun, laid-back vibe — not to mention the $5 cans of Citizen Cider — will make Drifter's your new favorite neighborhood hang.

This is a growler

This is growler central So, maybe you’re asking, “What’s a growler bar?” And if you’re asking that, you’re definitely asking, “What’s a growler?” Friend, you’re a lucky person because you’re about to be introduced to what we modestly believe is the world’s best way to enjoy your beer. Ready? Every week, we feature 8-12 different super-fresh beers (and sometimes cider!) that you cannot find in a bottle or can anywhere. It comes from Vermont or anywhere else in the world where somebody’s making a great brew we think you’ve gotta try. Sometimes it’s just out of the brewery, and sometimes we’ve specially-aged it for you. Quite simply, we think it’s the world’s best way to enjoy beer and cider. We serve up this truly wondrous stuff in a chilled 64-ounce growler, 32-ounce growlette and a 750-milliliter Squirt! Don’t forget to join our loyalty refill program for $1.00 off any size. It’s the environmentally-friendly way to buy beer because you just bring your growler back when you’re done. You’re happy, the environment’s happy, life’s good. And if you just happen to want to repeat that happy experience, we’ll provide you with a sanitized and wonderfully empty growler just waiting for you to point to one of the taps and say, “That one, please.” Bicycle benefits members get a dollar off their growler, and you can buy your sticker at PSB! (Convenient? Well, yeah.) Like us on Facebook and you’ll really like what you get: weekly updates on the latest insanely fresh beers and ciders at our growler bar. Grr.

CULTURE T

hey may still be dealing with locker combinations, midterms and gym class, but the members of Muslim Girls Making Change are also making waves nationwide. Since 2016, young slam poets Hawa Adam, Balkisa Abdikadir, Lena Ginawi and Kiran Waqar — all seniors at Burlington and South Burlington high schools — have used their words to challenge gender roles, fight racism and stand up for social justice. In their short time together, the girls have competed at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, D.C., and earned a spot on the Huffington Post’s list of “17 Muslim American Women Who Made America Great in 2016.” “When we leave an event and a person tells us that they were inspired and want to make a change, it is the most amazing thing,” says Waqar. “If they take action, just imagine the ripple effect.” While we await that sea change, What’s Good quizzed Adam and Waqar on what they do in their downtime. Favorite thing to do in Burlington: KW: Enjoy the waterfront with a creemee. I get it from the creemee store near ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain or Burlington Bay Market & Café. Favorite place to write poetry: KW: The UVM green in front of the water fountain. It’s really pretty and relatively peaceful. On Facebook and Instagram, I follow: KW: For Vermonters, mostly

politicians. We have some good ones, so it’s nice to see them doing good in turbulent times. One prominent one would be Kesha Ram (@KeshaRam). We also follow and work with Emerge Vermont a lot, which promotes Democratic women. Favorite local performing-arts space: HA: I love the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. When I was younger and went there more frequently, they always had these really insane shows with amazing live music.

Favorite local artist: HA: Our coach, Rajnii Eddins, is very admirable. He speaks up about the same issues that I am passionate about and is always there at as many Vermont events as he possibly can commit to. Not to mention, he hosts poetry sessions every Friday at the Fletcher Free Library. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: KW: An open mind and creativity. HA: A jacket and a book. — KYMELYA SARI

Lookin, Good SEVEN LOCAL ARTISTS TO WATCH BY RACHEL ELIZABETH JONES

Fun fact: Vermont has one of the highest percentages of artists per capita in the U.S. Evidence of this is rampant; just about every public space has art on display. (See page 55 for our guide to BTV galleries.) Want to put your finger on the creative pulse of the city? We’ve selected just a few up-and-comers to look out for. These fresh faces represent varied fields — from painting to printmaking — and just a fraction of the Queen City’s artistic output. But these ambitious originals stand out from the crowd.

Frank DeAngelis frankdeangelis.art, Insta: @frankdeangelisart The Burlington artist only took up painting in the last year or so — and has been producing work with a vengeance from his S.P.A.C.E. Gallery studio ever since. Seeming to use whatever surface provides itself, DeAngelis rocks an uncontrived, distinctly self-taught flair, filling up space with his own vocabulary of simple symbols and line work.

Sarah Letteney sarahletteney.com, Insta: @smallsuture

Matt Peterson matthewtakespictures.com, Insta: @matthewpeterson25 Publisher of seven issues of the Flatlander zine/art book, photographer Peterson is establishing FLTLNDPR, or Flatlander Press, to help other local artists make books. His own high-contrast film images explore social and physical landscapes with a tender and spontaneous gaze. 52 WHAT’S GOOD

2017-18

The Burlington artist’s clean lines, oft-gruesome subject matter and strategic, sparing use of bloodred ink have helped make her a local favorite. She’s lent her talents to Vermont food businesses Maglianero Café, ¡Duino! (Duende) and Pitchfork Farm, as well as BTV band Swale. Within her illustrations, ravens, hearts, skeletons and various dead things make frequent appearances.

Emily Anderson bluebirdfairies.com Anderson describes her oracle deck of Bluebird Fairies as “earnest little drawings that help people do big things.” Born from drawings done with her (non-dominant) left hand, the tarot-like cards feature inspirational, adorable and sometimes mysterious magical figures, such as the Fairy of Heart Thumping Love. Anderson offers full decks, as well as readings and intuitive fairy and demon drawing workshops, at various events around town, spreading joy and insight as far as she can.

Rachel Lindsay rachellivesherenow.com, Insta: @rachellivesherenow While she was a student at Columbia University, the graphic artist created the first graphic-novel thesis — like, ever. Having transplanted herself from New York to Burlington, Lindsay takes on many a Vermontism with her weekly Seven Days strip “Rachel Lives Here Now.” Her comics combine wit, humor and zaniness with raw — and sometimes dark — honesty. Look for her first graphic novel, Rx, in 2018.

Alissa Faber alissafaber.com, Insta: @alissafaber Melding form and function, Faber works primarily with glass, wood and clay, mining the creative possibilities of her materials. For her “Blackened Timber” series, Faber uses found wood as singular glass molds — the molten glass blackens the wood, and, once the two have cooled, they are reunited as a unique sculptural vessel. wg

Jackson Tupper jacksontupper.com, Insta: @jackson.tupper The designer at famous Burlington brand Burton Snowboards has movement on the brain. His “Boys & Girls” series of line drawings shows boys and girls on skateboards doing a variety of things that boys and girls do: high-fiving, drinking, getting married. Tupper’s larger, more colorful screen prints, in particular, have a California vibe. His minimal style is cheeky and warm, while always staying very cool.

Participating Burlington galleries are free during the First Friday Art walks — and some even offer complimentary snacks. See the art listings at sevendaysvt.com for details. 53

A LOOK AT BTV’S ARTSY DESTINATIONS BY RACHEL ELIZABETH JONES Burlington positively oozes creativity — like, in a good way. You can witness it at work in the city’s varied galleries and exhibition spaces, which showcase local, national and international artists alike. When you’re ready to feast your eyes, mind and soul — or just have a lazy, wander-y afternoon — check out one (or more!) of these art hubs. To stay up-to-date on openings and must-sees, turn to the Seven Days art listings in print or online at sevendaysvt.com and subscribe to the weekly re:View e-newsletter. wg

Curator Chris Thompson (left) is the rogue mind operating this modest, transitory space on the second floor of the school’s Center for Communication & Creative Media. The gallery offers a peculiar breadth of works and workshops, from paper made with underwear by the Peace Paper Project to an interactive VR sculpture by “digital nomad” Fernando Ramallo. A small house on campus allows Thompson — who also runs the Generator, a nonprofit maker space in BTV's South End — to host national and international artists who may not otherwise find themselves in our fair city. Plenty of locals show here, as well — including graduating students working in fine arts and game design.

MATTHEW THORSEN

1

Vermont Comedy Club 101 Main St., Burlington, vermontcomedyclub.com

Burlington may be small, but its performing-arts scene upstages that of many cities. (See what we did there?) Whether you’re a die-hard “Glee” fan looking for your musical fix or a comedy nut who loves the awkward thrills of improv, BTV won’t let you down. Want to see something truly weird? Don’t worry — we’ve got that, too. wg

What’s not a joke at the Vermont Comedy Club? Just one thing: its status as the state’s undisputed venue for all things funny. Hilarious husband-and-wife team Nathan Hartswick and Natalie Miller opened the 150-seat theater and bar in 2015; it's served as a catalyst for Vermont’s growing comedy scene ever since. In addition to showcasing major standups such as Kevin McDonald of the Kids in the Hall fame, Jen Kirkman and Nikki Glaser, VCC is home base for local improv troupe the Unmentionables. It also offers classes and workshops for locals who want to get silly. Speaking of silly, check out the club’s purple “unicow” mascot.

The adjacent FlynnSpace is a 180-seat venue for more intimate shows.

GOOD EATS?

THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT

HTLIFE I

f you’ve ever set foot in a Burlington bar or club, you’ve likely encountered effervescent bouncer extraordinaire Mikey van Gulden. As the youngest of 10 children, he’s always been accustomed to crowds. Raised in Williston, his first jobs in Burlington included washing dishes at the long-gone Déjà Vu Café and working the elevator at the equally extinct Magram’s department store. He eventually settled into a career in event security: Van Gulden spent two decades working crowds and spotting

Café, Leunig’s Bistro & Café. Burlington’s bar world is a salad that offers such tasty peoplewatching.

Favorite local band: Dwight & Nicole. All of their bells and whistles that attract me come from their raw vocal and guitar talent. Also, they’re both nice, selfless people. Something relatively new in Burlington that I love: The attention put into improving the bike path. I hope some solar LED lights are put out to assist riders. Fascinating local oddity: The hidden paintings that live behind the drop ceiling on the top floor of the Howard Opera House building on Church Street. Vermont destination worth driving for: Every apple orchard you can find. [Editor’s note: For a quick trip, try Shelburne Orchards. Three words: There’s a distillery.]

fake IDs with an eagle eye at Queen City hot spots such as Nectar’s and Higher Ground. He confiscated nitrous tanks at Phish’s famous 1997 festival the Great Went. In 2010, he started his own firm, Chocolate Thunder Security. Though he’s usually all smiles, don’t be fooled into thinking he’s a softy — van Gulden will sling you over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes and escort you to the curb if you don’t follow the rules. But in his words, “Public humiliation often goes further than physical exertion.” Best bars/clubs to hang out in: Three Needs Brewery & Taproom, Higher Ground, Club Metronome, Halvorson’s Upstreet

2 0 1 7 –2 0 18

Favorite street in Burlington: Depot Street. It’s the only street in town that has “Do Not Enter” and “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” signs on both ends. Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Optimism. And a second job. —JORDAN ADAMS

Well, the GET AIR TRAMPOLINE PARK in Williston is what happens when that friend grows up, buys a warehouse and fills it with thousands of square feet of trampolines. You can bounce for hours. LOCAL MUSIC YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO

BY JORDAN ADAMS

You could easily spend seven nights a week in Burlington checking out great live music and never encounter the same genre twice. We might advise a more even-keeled approached — sleep is important, y’know. The point is, the Queen City punches above its weight class when it comes to rock and/or roll — not to mention jazz, funk, hip-hop, reggae, folk, world music, metal, EDM, punk … You get the idea. Where to begin? Start by tuning into the seven notable local acts that follow. Then get out and explore — say, by turning to Seven Days’ weekly music coverage at sevendaysvt.com. You might well discover your new favorite band playing at that hole-in-the-wall club down the street. If you don’t believe us, just ask Phish or Grace Potter fans.

MATTHEW THORSEN

Kat Wright katwrightsoulband.com RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE (RIYL): Sharon Jones,

the New Review

In the last few years, Kat Wright has become one of the biggest and most sought-after acts in Vermont. Originally billed as Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band, the octet grew out of a weekly classicsoul jam session at Burlington’s Radio Bean. The sultry maven recently ditched the cumbersome extension for a few reasons. First, she was tired of being introduced as Kat Wright and the “Abominable Snow Band.” More importantly, she and her band don’t limit their repertoire to simply retro soul music. They serve up plenty of jazz, R&B and other styles in a hearty groove stew that’s sure to fog up the windowpanes. LIKED THAT? TRY THESE:

RIYL: the MC5, the Stooges

When brothers Julian, Urian and Bobby Hackney Jr. started Rough Francis, the band was meant to be a tribute to their father and uncles’ seminal 1970s Detroit proto-punk trio, Death. The young Hackneys soon began writing and recording their own music and fast became one of the loudest and rowdiest bands in the 05401. Death’s punk influence remains, but Rough Francis’ reach extends further into rock-and-roll history, mining the ’60s for a slightly looser, garagerock vibe.

Steamy, soulful and sensuous, Burlington’s smalltalker specialize in a sleek brand of neo-soul that might best be described as baby-makin’ music. The 10-person ensemble draws from a range of styles, including hip-hop, funk, jazz and R&B. While several members handle lead vocals, the star of the show is powerhouse Steph Heaghney, who is quickly ascending as one of Vermont’s most dynamic singers.

Originally from Connecticut, singersongwriter Hannah Fair developed a taste for Burlington while on her first monthlong tour at age 17. She told her bandmates then that she would live here someday. Five years later, depending on the night, you might catch her at clubs around town with a full backing band or strumming and singing all by her lonesome. Fair’s grizzled, bluesy songs lean toward the dark and gritty, and her voice zigzags between sounding wholly vulnerable and stalwart.

ollin Hale has lived in Vermont most of his life. But it was during a brief stint in Phoenix, Ariz. — in fourth through sixth grades — that he discovered skateboarding. By the time his family moved back to Underhill, Hale was hooked. “Skateboarding’s not for everyone, but the people that it is for, it really takes a hold of your life,” he explains. These days, Hale is one of just a handful of Vermont skaters who have gone pro — he joined LA’s Warco Skateboards in April 2016. While most in his industry make it big by moving out to California, Hale has stayed put. Why?

This one is definitely in the top five of the ones I’ve been to. Local band you’d like to soundtrack one of your skate videos: I want to get Rough Francis on the soundtrack. They’re awesome. Vermont restaurant worth driving for: Worthy Burger. I like that it’s far out from the normal areas I visit — gets you outta Chittenden County. You go there, and they have all the best beers on the list and the food is really high quality, sourced from the best farms. “I’ve grown up here, fallen in love with the food and the environment,” he says. Plus, “Vermont, from a skateboarding perspective, is very different from anyplace else. It’s hard to do the sport from here. It’s rainy and it snows and it’s not the best pavement. When you can make it from here, it seems even more special.” When he’s not skating locally and at parks around the world, Hale can be found foraging for mushrooms, gathering his own spring water or pursuing his other passion — cooking — in the kitchen at Stowe’s Doc Ponds. Where to skate in Burlington: The “Jersey Barrier” on the unfinished section of the highway [off of Pine Street] — because of the do-it-yourself aspect. People have built concrete ramps there. Lake Effect GET YOUR FEET WET WITH OUR LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRIMER BY DAN BOLLES

Just as mountain activities are a virtual prerequisite for surviving the winter months in Vermont, doing summer right in BTV means taking advantage of Lake Champlain. The best way, of course, is to own a boat — or befriend a sailor. But if those options are beyond your means — or social graces — don’t despair. There are still myriad ways to enjoy the state’s most precious natural resource that fit any budget or lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorites.

North Beach

By far the easiest and cheapest way to get some lake time is to hit the beach. Burlington’s coastline is teeming with a variety of sandy strips. LEDDY PARK’s shallow waters make it an ideal family spot. NORTH BEACH guarantees a lively atmosphere — and a snack bar! — and is popular with the young and beautiful. OAKLEDGE PARK offers a sandy beach and secluded rocky nooks. Wanna beat the crowds? Spring for a membership at the ST. JOHN’S CLUB. The blue-collar social club has cheap drinks and a private beach. FYI, alcohol is permitted at all public beaches — but glass bottles are not!

Blazing Paddles FILE: JOHN JAMES

If you’re looking for a more active approach to water recreation — and an ab-shredding core workout to boot — why not try standup paddleboarding? PADDLESURF CHAMPLAIN offers hourly, half-day and full-day rentals, plus lessons to help keep you upright — because no one wants to face-plant in front of throngs of Oakledge sunbathers.

Lake Champlain is home to zebra mussels with sharp shells. If you’re swimming or wading, beware — and protect your feet with water shoes.

If you like the pace and exertion of SUPing but could do without all that standing, UMIAK OUTDOOR OUTFITTERS at North Beach rents solo and tandem kayaks in addition to paddleboards. Or check out the canoe, kayak and rowboat fleet at the AUER FAMILY BOATHOUSE off North Avenue, where they’ll also sell you bait.

Sail Away

JAMES BUCK

Don’t know the difference between a mainsheet and a mainsail? Don’t sweat it. The seafaring folks at the COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER on the Burlington waterfront will show you the ropes — and knots and sails and keels — of sailing and have you tacking, jibing and talking like an old salt in no time. For experienced sailors, CSC offers a variety of dinghies and keelboats for rent, in addition to canoes and paddleboards. Would you rather let someone else do all the work while you sip wine spritzers? Grab 11 of your closest pals and book a charter sail with WHISTLING MAN SCHOONER aboard the woodenmasted sloop Friend Ship.

What Lies Beneath What’s the only thing cooler than being out on the water? Being under it — with a supply of oxygen, that is. The WATERFRONT DIVING

CENTER will teach you to avoid the bends with scuba lessons. The highly trained staff also leads diving excursions to check out the many shipwrecks resting at the bottom of the lake. Watch out for Champ, the storied local lake monster.

The Spirit That Moves You You can’t truly appreciate the beauty of Burlington until you’ve seen it from the middle of the lake. Docked by the Burlington Boathouse, the 363-passenger SPIRIT OF ETHAN ALLEN III offers narrated sightseeing cruises several times a day — we recommend the spectacular sunset cruise. Vermont’s largest cruise ship also hosts a variety of themed voyages, including the Captain’s Dinner Dance cruise, the Lobstah on the Lake Dinner cruise and, our favorite, the Murder Mystery Dinner cruise. wg

GOOD WAYS TO EMBRACE THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Waterfront Park, Burlington, enjoyburlington.com

Getting outside during Vermont’s six-month winter is critical. Trust us, seasonal affective disorder is real, and hitting the slopes will help ward it off. When the snow melts, you’ll be more than ready to catch some rays. To help you take advantage of your awesome natural surroundings yearround, here's a sampling of our favorite outdoor activities. We’ve also included some choice spots for gearing up — cuz you don’t want to be the chump skiing in jeans. wg

Bummed that you can’t skate down the Church Street Marketplace? Don’t worry, there’s a consolation prize. Hit up Burlington’s world-class concrete skate park, located just off the waterfront bike path, for its rails, ramps, boxes, half-bowl and half-pipe. In June 2016, skate legend Tony Hawk dropped in to help dedicate the park to late local DJ and skateboarder Andy “A-Dog” Williams. You might catch local pro Collin Hale (see page 76) here, too.

mily Packard has been gunning her engines since she was 9 years old. That was the first time she got behind the wheel of a race car — admittedly, a go-kart — and she’s rarely slowed down since. The 20-year-old Community College of Vermont business major is a thirdgeneration Vermonter. She’s also the youngest race-car driver to compete in the American Canadian Tour — and its only female. When she’s not on the track, Packard works in her family’s business, Packard Fuels in East Montpelier; she commutes there daily from her Granite State home just over the border. But 2017 has been a slow race season for Packard. Why? She’s been busy planning her September 2018 wedding to her fiancé — fellow driver and longtime competitor Shawn Swallow. Has Packard ever beaten him on the track? “Yeah,” she says with a smile. “Every time.” That explains why the couple won’t merge their pit crews after tying the knot. As Packard puts it, “We’re way too competitive for that.” Where you can find me on a Friday night: Because I have a really close family, we do a lot of family things together. One of our favorite places to go is the indoor go-kart track at Essex Speedway & Action Center. The facility can control our speed, you know. Sometimes I think that when they see all our racing shirts, they turn it down on us. But usually, we’re bumping and banging and get spoken to more than once. Favorite roads to drive in Vermont: One of my favorites is Route 14, the road from East Montpelier to Hardwick. I just find it a really peaceful ride, and I do my best thinking on that road. My other favorite would be Route 2 from

East Montpelier to Lancaster, N.H. I travel it every day. I think it’s really, really pretty, especially right before you get into New Hampshire where you can see the White Mountains. Preferred pit stop for a bite to eat: The Steak House Restaurant in Barre.

What every Vermonter should experience: Every Vermonter should go to Thunder Road SpeedBowl in Barre at least once. And if you have the opportunity to go in the pit, you should, because it’s such a nice atmosphere. It’s a little more close up with all the drivers and the pit crews. Anybody can go back there. There’s also Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven. Shorttrack racing is awesome!

Two things you need to survive in Vermont: Have a good heating source. You and your house won’t survive our winters without good heat. I prefer oil — and I’m kind of paid to say that! Also, make sure you get enough vitamin D, because by the end of the winter, there’s not a lot of sun and everybody’s pretty grumpy around here. You can definitely tell they’re not getting the vitamin D. — KEN PICARD

Drive Time ROUTING THE ROAD TRIP THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU BY CAROLYN FOX Burlington is a great place to live, work and play. But the fun doesn’t stop at the city limits. Whether you’re looking for beaches and snack bars, mountain peaks and pinescented forests, or skyscrapers and city streets, there’s a great escape just a short drive away. Take the quiz below, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

My favorite

SEASON is…

A) Winter! As soon as the snow flies, I strap into my snowboard to shred that sweet, sweet gnar. B) Summer! Bring on the creemees, kayaks and sunshine, please.

If I could

C) Um, pass? Whatever the weather, you can find me hangin’ out indoors.

VACATIONthe

anywhere in U.S., it would be…

A) In a rustic cabin in Boulder, Colo. Being so close to the mountains and Mother Nature makes me feel alive.

SATURDAYS

My usually go a little like this…

A) Wake up at the cra ck of down for an invigorating hik e. Hit the farmers market for lun ch, then it’s straight to the bik e path or swimming hole. The mo re my weekend resembles a triathlon, the better. B) Sleep in ’til noon, the n head outside with a blanke t, picnic basket and group of friends to straight-up chill. C) Brunch first, to kic k that hangover. Then I wande r in and out of shops and cafés and see where I end up. Chanc es are, it’ll be another late night of drinks and dancing.

B) In a beachside bungalow in the Florida Keys. I love waves, water and sand. C) In a high-rise hotel in New York City. There’s nothing like the hustle and bustle of a big city.

You might hear “802” as a nickname for Vermont (i.e., “Dang, it’s good to be back in the 802!”). It’s a reference to the state’s sole area code. 88 WHAT’S GOOD

STOWE

Winter wreaks havoc on Vermont roads. Months of snow and ice create frost heaves — broken pavement due to frozen water expanding in the soil beneath. It's especially a problem in early spring. So watch out! (And for the love of Old Man Winter, slow down.)

Just 45 minutes from Burlington, Stowe offers amazing, four-season access to Mother Nature. Since that’s what brought you here, let’s talk outdoor adventures first. STOWE MOUNTAIN RESORT is your spot for snow-season skiing and riding. The rest of the year, reverse your mountain course and hike up MOUNT MANSFIELD instead of sliding down it. Or drive the TOLL ROAD for a different kind of adrenaline rush — the unpaved zigzag to the summit is not for the faint of heart. At nearby TRAPP FAMILY LODGE — founded by the famous Austrian family of singers — the hills are alive with hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Make sure to visit the on-site VON TRAPP BREWING BIERHALL RESTAURANT for lagers and Linzertortes. Down in the village, there’s easy access to the 5.3mile STOWE RECREATION PATH. Spin your wheels along the west branch of the LITTLE RIVER, stopping for restaurants, galleries and gorgeous scenery along the way. For good eats, hit up the STOWE FARMERS MARKET, held every Sunday from May through October, or DOC PONDS, a gastropub serving everything from calamari to Cubans to craft beers. Speaking of adult bevvies, don’t miss STOWE CIDER and the world-famous ALCHEMIST brewery. Now that you’ve filled your belly, feast your eyes at the HELEN DAY ART CENTER or WEST BRANCH GALLERY & SCULPTURE PARK — follow the outdoor sculptures at the latter to the river. Then squeeze in some extra playtime — whether that’s a round of mini golf at STOWE GOLF PARK or striking out at STOWE BOWL. If you’ve done Stowe right, you won’t think about heading home until every single muscle aches. And for that, there’s the hydrotherapy waterfall at STOWEFLAKE MOUNTAIN RESORT & SPA.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN ISLANDS minutes from Burlington and boasts picnic grounds, boat rentals and warm, shallow waters. You’ve chosen to have a summertime adventure in the Lake Champlain Islands — now it’s time to choose how to get there. If you want to beach-bum ASAP, take a car and head straight for any one of these five island towns’ spectacular sandy stretches. SAND BAR STATE PARK, technically in Milton, is just 20

COLCHESTER CAUSEWAY, a former rail trail jutting out into the water. There, the ISLAND LINE BIKE FERRY will connect you to cycle-friendly South Hero, where food and farms await. Push your pedals to SEB’S, a snack bar known for fried fare and creemees as big as your face. Then sample wine and wander through vines at nearby SNOW FARM VINEYARD. Its Thursday evening concert series is alcohol-friendly picnicking at its finest, complete with eats from Pizza Papillo and locally churned Island Homemade Ice Cream. Or maybe take a trip to ALLENHOLM FARM for berry picking, cute farm animals and homemade pie. Finally, if you’re curious about the formation of this island archipelago, visit the GOODSELL RIDGE or FISK QUARRY preserves to walk the nature trails and learn about the 480-million-year-old CHAZY FOSSIL REEF — a true geologic wonder.

MONTRÉAL Just over an hour and a half from Burlington, Montréal offers young adults something they can’t find in Vermont: a drinking age of 18. But La Belle Ville’s bars are the least buzzworthy of its attractions. The cultural capital of Québec is your ticket to cosmopolitan sights and sounds, and it’s just one passport (or Enhanced ID) away. Begin by exploring the city’s old-world charms — that is, the cobblestone streets of OLD MONTRÉAL. Duck into the NOTRE-DAME BASILICA, an ornate Gothic-Revival masterpiece built in 1829. Then check out the unique boutiques and bar scene along the banks of the ST. LAWRENCE RIVER. In winter, this is a hot spot for massive music and arts festivals, Igloofest and Montréal en Lumière among them. Now that you’ve had a history lesson, get some culture at one of Montréal’s museums. The centrally located MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS houses one of Canada’s finest collections. The RIO TINTO ALCAN

PLANETARIUM, BIODOME, INSECTARIUM and BOTANICAL GARDEN are all located in the same district, just a stone’s throw from the MONTRÉAL TOWER OBSERVATORY, which offers a stunning panorama 500 feet over the city. Hungry? The open-air ATWATER and JEAN-TALON markets are stocked with gourmet edibles from around the globe. Don’t forget to sample some poutine — gravy fries with cheese curds! Called Montréal’s Central Park, MOUNT ROYAL PARK is a natural

The Bike Shop That Comes to You

oasis in the middle of this bustling metropolis. The TAM-TAMS hold an unofficial hand-drumming festival here every warm-weather Sunday, and the surrounding grounds are perfect for picnicking, jogging or ice-skating, depending on the season. But if the weather’s crappy, you can wander Montréal’s UNDERGROUND CITY — a subterranean network of shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and museums — for hours without setting foot outside. wg

If you’ve had a DUI, you can be barred from visiting Canada for 10 years. Just another good reason not to drink and drive.

ADVENTURES TO ADD TO YOUR VERMONT BUCKET LIST BY CAROLYN FOX Locals have this saying: “The best thing about Burlington is that it’s close to Vermont.” As awesome as BTV is (obvs — have you read the rest of this book?), we can’t help but agree: Getting out of town every so often is crucial. The following Green Mountain State destinations are good reason to leave Burlington — at least for the day. wg

Bread and Puppet Theater 753 Heights Rd., Glover, breadandpuppet.org Provocative German artist Peter Schumann brought his radical troupe of political puppeteers to Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom in 1974. The worldrenowned group houses its massive collection of giant puppets, masks and paintings in a 150-year-old barn/museum that’s open to visitors — just turn the lights on when you enter and off when you leave. Plan your trip for a summer Friday or Sunday, when you can enjoy a show in the Dirt Floor Theater with a slice of sourdough rye — underlining Bread and Puppet's belief that art is as basic to life as bread.

Sunset Lake, Brookfield One of just three such structures in the country (and the only one east of the Mississippi), Brookfield’s Floating Bridge is just what it sounds like: a bridge that floats on the surface of Sunset Lake. You can drive over it — but jumping off it in the summertime is more fun.

6

830 Jay Peak Rd., Jay, jaypeakresort.com

What kind of guide would we be if we didn’t tell you to visit the Wonkaesque HQ of Ben & Jerry’s? Yes, it’s super touristy. But a factory tour will give you the inside scoop on Vermont’s homegrown ice cream empire, the Flavor Graveyard will capture your imagination, and the cone counter will leave a sweet taste in your mouth.

BROOKFIELD FLOATING BRIDGE

PUMP HOUSE INDOOR WATERPARK Most people head to Jay Peak Resort to ski or ride. We go for La Chute, a 65-foot waterslide that drops you through a 360-degree loop at 45 mph in a terrifying six seconds. The cure for your winter woes, this water park also has a lazy river, poolside bar and Double Barrel Flowrider (read: surf station).

5

ROCK OF AGES GRANITE QUARRY

558 Graniteville Rd., Graniteville, rockofages.com Vermont’s granite quarries look so otherworldly that this one made a cameo in a Star Trek movie. Tour the world’s largest operational quarry — it’s nearly 600 feet deep — then roll a rubber ball down the outdoor granite bowling lane. Don’t miss nearby Hope Cemetery, where the headstones showcase local stone carvers’ unique artistry.

TUBING THE MAD RIVER Mad River, Waitsfield

With light rapids, smooth stretches and plenty of beaches for sunbathing, Waitsfield’s Mad River is a local favorite for summertime tubing. Make it easy by renting tubes from Clearwater Sports (clearwatersports.com). They’ll drop you off and shuttle you back — and even provide a float for your beverages.

WILSON CASTLE

2708 West Street, Proctor, wilsoncastle.com Built in 1867 for $1.3 million, this is Vermont’s only true castle. Admire the strikingly beautiful arches and turret, then head inside to feast your eyes on 32 rooms, 84 stainedglass windows, 13 fireplaces, and Far Eastern and European furnishings. Love getting the heebie-jeebies? Go in late October for a haunted tour.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ON LOVE AND LUST IN BURLINGTON

I go to the same bar all the time. There’s this hot chick who bartends there, but I can’t tell if she’s single. I get good vibes, so should I ask her out? — BARFLY ON THE WALL What’s life without a little risk, amirite? What’s the worst that could happen here? She says no, and it’s a little awkward the next time you go in. (Don’t let a “no” deter you from going back to the bar with your friends

— though there’s no shortage of fun nightspots in this town if you find it unbearable.) But I can’t help but ponder a better question: What if she says yes?

I’m a transitioning female, and I’m struggling to find other members of the trans community. Where should I be looking? — OUTSIDE LOOKING IN Look no further than the Pride Center of Vermont. Located on South Champlain Street in Burlington, the organization is a hub of community and support. Its motto is “Celebrate, educate, advocate.” As such, the center provides a variety of resources to people of all gender identities in a welcoming and nonjudgmental environment. Explore its calendar of events, and you’ll 94 WHAT’S GOOD

find a number of trans-focused support groups to attend in Burlington and beyond — plus fundraisers, seminars, and movie and game nights. Transitioning can be a complicated time, but there are many folks grappling with the same questions and ups and downs you are. I’m confident the Pride Center will connect you to soon-to-be friends and confidantes.

I just started dating someone who’s really into working out and being active. I need date ideas that are fun and physical. — LET’S GET PHYSICAL

My ex started working in my building on Church Street. He’s all over my favorite lunch spots and coffee shops. What should I do? — FEELING TERRITORIAL

Hello! We’re in Vermont. The question should really be, what can’t you do here? Springtime — aka mud season — is all about walking paved trails and riding the bike path. In summer, head down to the lake and try a paddleboarding class with Paddlesurf Champlain. Some yoga studios offer outdoor classes, and there’s always canoeing or kayaking. In the fall, hike up Mount Mansfield and surprise your sweetie with a favorite treat at the top. Skiing and snowboarding are the obvious winter choices — but you could also hit up Cairns Arena for ice skating or the Jay Peak indoor water park for those “too cold to go outside” days. Speaking of which… Sex. A stay-at-home date between the sheets? Now, that’s my kind of workout.

Start packing a lunch, I guess. Bring food from home or grab some of the amazing prepared eats from Healthy Living Market and Café on Dorset Street or City Market/Onion River Co-op downtown. When it’s warm, you can take your goodies to City Hall Park or the waterfront and soak up some sun. You just might meet someone new along the way! (Wink, wink.) That said, Burlington’s a small town, and it’s common to run into exes — so do yourself a favor and learn to deal. Don’t completely change your routine and let him monopolize your favorite places. And remember, he probably feels awkward about seeing you, too. So play nice when your paths cross and know that it’ll get easier. Just think: Soon you can skip the awkward chitchat and move on to a polite nod.

Can I get an STD from oral sex? And where can I get tested? — WORRYWART The short answer to your first question is yes. STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, hepatitis and even HIV can be transmitted by goin’ south. Before you freak out: Head to Planned Parenthood on St. Paul Street. The friendly and knowledgeable staff will answer your most, ahem, burning questions and perform tests to set your mind at ease. Kudos to you for making health and safety a priority. wg

My girlfriend works super late downtown, and I worry about her safety. What can I do to help keep her safe? — SAFETY FIRST What a conscientious partner you are! It’s such a bummer that we even have to worry about this, but here are some tips: Encourage her to buddy up with a coworker — they can walk out together, head to one vehicle and drive to the other car. If she’s walking all the way home, she should keep to busy or well-lit paths and avoid distracting activities such as talking on the phone or listening to music. She should also text someone before she leaves work — and make sure her phone is charged. Additionally, she might want to consider carrying pepper spray and taking a self-defense class at the Safety Team in South Burlington. The upside? Rallying your partner to be empowered is way sexy.
