The picture above is of 4 German soldiers. 1.5 million. What does that number mean to you? That is the estimated number of children who died during the holocaust of World War II. According to The History Learning Site “1.9 million children gathered at rail stations in early September not knowing where they were going or if they would be split from brothers and sisters who had gathered with them. Children accounted for one in ten of the deaths during the Blitz of London from 1940 to 1941. WW2 was a brutal time in world history because the Germans killed Jews, families were taken away from each other, and children were forced to work in labor camps.

Labor Camps

This picture above is a row of Jews at a Nazi work camp. WW2 was brutal because Germans killed Jews. The Germans believed that the Jews were trying to take over the world. Hitler’s ultimate goal of World War 2 was to create an Aryan race. An Aryan race is a pure race where people have blue eyes, blond hair, and white skin. This is interesting since Hitler may have had Jewish ancestors. Even through Germany and Italy were allies, the Germans took the Jews from Italy and sent them to die. Jews were found at German camps. When the USA found them, some were dead and others were as skinny as a popsicle stick. Roberto’s friend, Samuele, was given the name Enzo by his friends because the name Samuele was considered Jewish. Samuele says, “they might found out I’m a Jew. They would kill me for sure.” Hitler had many Jews killed but nobody knows what happened to his Jewish grandfather.

The Kindertransport

https://www.ushmm.org/lcmedia/photo/lc/image/44/44203.jpg The picture above shows many kids ready to be sent to the country

Not only did Germans kill Jews but they also took kids from families and forced them to work for them. At the labor camps, kids were forced to work under bad conditions. They were not well fed or taken care of. The children had so little food and worked such long hours, that many kids died from starvation and poor treatment. After WW2 most of the children went to orphanages because their families had died. Some children were saved by the Kindertransport. The Kindertransport was an effort to move kids to the country where they would be safe from bombs. 10,000 children were saved, but only 20% of kids were reunited with their real family. The U.K. “took in nearly 10,000 predominantly Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Free City of Danzig. The children were placed in British foster homes, hostels, schools and farms. Often they were the only members of their families who survived the Holocaust.
