Imagine being disrespected by the people in your own country after fighting in a war, when you should be honored instead. That is what it was like coming back from the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was a difficult time period for soldiers who got injured in the war, for soldiers who came back from the war, and for soldiers who had trauma from the war.

Vietnam war Protests

Injured Soldiers The Vietnam war was a difficult time period for soldiers who got injured in the war. About 150,000 injured Vietnam vets came home, but about 21,000 Vietnam vets weren’t able to work and were forever disabled. Most Vietnam vets came from poor communities so they didn’t have proper health care. According to the website The Vietnam War, “They could not even afford private health care services, thereby having no choice but to be treated in dirty public hospitals.” This shows that they were lower class citizens and should have gotten proper health care. Injured Vietnam vets weren’t treated with proper health care and in addition they couldn’t get jobs to pay for health care. People were negative towards them and treated them with disrespect. SOLDIERS RETURNING FROM VIETNAM The Vietnam war was a difficult time period for soldiers who came back from the war. When soldiers came back from Vietnam, people disrespected them and spit on them. Protesters called them “baby killers”. “I am not aware of many Vietnam vets who were not subjected to some disrespect, either personal or from the culture that called us ‘baby killers.’” said Star Tribune.

This is an example of how soldiers were treated when they came back from the war. The Vietnam war was difficult to be apart of and watch your friends get killed without knowing who the enemy really was. On top of that coming home to people disrespecting them was additionally difficult and retraumatizing for some.

SOLDIERS WITH TRAUMA The Vietnam war was a difficult time period for soldiers who had trauma from the war. After coming back from the war, soldiers had nightmares and flashbacks. About 700,000 vets suffered from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder which was not acknowledged by the Veterans Administration until 1979. “Because they had to endure so much pain and even felt abandoned by the their own people and country, more than 100,000 Vietnam veterans (the actual number would be much higher) committed suicide after the war, which is nearly two times the number of soldiers had died in Vietnam.” said the website The Vietnam War. This shows that they didn’t have the help they needed and people ignored that they needed help.

The Vietnam war was an unpopular war especially compared to World War II. The effects from the war were harsh especially for veterans returning from combat. In conclusion the vietnam war was a difficult time period for soldiers who got injured in the war, for soldiers who came back from the war, and for soldiers who had trauma from the war. Even today there are more than 100,000 Vietnam era vets living in the streets and homeless, does that seem fair to you?

Facts:

More Vietnam veterans committed suicide than the number of soldiers that  died in the war
