Our reputation for world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research, with strong links to business and industry, has seen sharp growth in applications to the Dubai Campus since it opened in 2005. It is of particular pleasure to me to be taking over as the Head of Dubai Campus during a period of significant development and expansion.
Reinforcing our commitment to providing high quality British education through programmes tailored to meet the demands of the UAE employment market, 2011 will see the opening of a new, purpose-built campus. This £35 million investment will treble the size of the university, enhance our world-class programme offering and provide much improved student support facilities and services. The academic performance of Dubai students has been exceptional. As well as winning more than their fair share of University prizes and degrees with distinction they have also generated
a reputation for winning a number of industry and design awards. This, combined with many undergraduates gaining their first taste of employment with world class ‘blue-chip’ companies, and postgraduates achieving career progression as a result of their degrees demonstrates the synergy between students and the University experience. By joining Heriot-Watt Dubai Campus you will be welcomed into a supportive learning environment and be taking your first step towards a successful career.

LIVING IN THE UAE Since its formation in 1971 Dubai has established a growing reputation as one of the world’s most attractive and rapidly developing destinations. Its transformation from a tranquil desert into the trading and commercial hub of the Middle East combines a prestigious business and tourist centre with the wide open spaces of a luxurious landscape.
It is an ambitious city with clear aspirations. This is reflected in its approach to education. Dubai International Academic City set itself the aim of conquering the education market by opening its doors to universities and institutions from every corner of the globe. Heriot–Watt University was the first UK university to open in Dubai International Academic City in 2005 bringing with it the prestige of a high quality British education offering flexible study options for ambitious students throughout the Gulf and beyond.
A word of caution though – it’s easy to get lost in Dubai, principally due to the scale of ongoing construction projects. It is strongly advised that students coming to the UAE for the first time familiarise themselves with local transport routes and customs. Another contrast is the weather. To cope with hot summers (45-55 °C) and mild winters we suggest you don’t leave home without something to cover your head and, of course, a light jacket to protect you from the sudden cool breezes.
Dubai is a region rich in contrasts. Located at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa, Dubai is a magnet for tourists. Weekends can be spent on safari, riding camels, enjoying traditional Arabic coffee or going dizzy watching belly-dancers. Alternatively you can have shopping weekends or relax to music in the vast array of clubs and nightlife. Yet the comforts of the 21st century co-exist comfortably with the region’s rich Arab-Islamic culture.

INTROdUCTION By DR SARIm nAjI AL-zuBAIDy
Engineers use their imagination and knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry to devise, apply and manage the technologies that are fundamental to the well-being and advancement of society. Taking Dubai as an example, the construction of iconic buildings such as Burj Al Arab, which reveals its supporting structure for all to see, and of course Burj Khalifa as it breaks world height records, would not be possible without significant input from well qualified, professional engineers. Engineers will be fundamental to the evolution of Dubai’s manufacturing industry, this being accelerated by the creation of Industrial City. Furthermore all this must be undertaken with due concern for the impact of our lifestyles on climate change. The provision of such well-qualified and able engineers is at the core of Heriot-Watt University’s 180 year heritage, and we are proud to be able to offer our internationally recognised and respected degrees here in Dubai through our School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We are now entering our fifth year of operation of our undergraduate Mechanical and Electronic and Electrical Engineering degrees, BSc in Engineering and Management and introduced in 2009, our BEng in Automotive Engineering.
The performance of our students has been outstanding - for the last two years running, a Dubai student has won the Gibbs Prize for overall “best student”. This type of achievement proves that Dubai students are making the best of the opportunity that studying engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai provides. All our students enjoy an intimate teaching environment which blends conventional lecturing and tutorials with interactive on-line material in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Labs and extra-curricular projects such as our “Robot Challenge” develop knowledge and practical skills. Our final year individual student projects are designed to establish contact with local industry, and we will favour projects that seek to minimise environmental issues.
Our Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the IMechE in the UK, on the basis that the learning outcomes, the academic quality control processes and the standards achieved are all the same in Dubai as in Edinburgh. Graduates of our postgraduate degree in Energy are able to gain membership of the professional association. We therefore welcome applications from well-qualified and motivated students who wish to benefit from a high-quality learning experience and gain a degree accredited by the appropriate British professional institutions. Such degrees will prepare them for employment in the engineering profession in Dubai, the region or beyond.
Furthermore we provide access to probably the best e-library in the region, the same e-library as our students in Edinburgh, enabled by the power of the internet. Access to the e-library and the VLE is possible from both the campus and the student’s home, optimising the use of study time and allowing our students’ families to see something of the teaching and learning process we provide.

THE PROGRAMME Modern society needs high quality Mechanical Engineering graduates for their professional mechanical engineering skills and expertise. Mechanical Engineering offers an exciting environment where many skills are brought together to enable the undergraduate student to understand how products are engineered, manufactured and supported through the technological impact on processes and infrastructure; how and where analytical engineering science and mathematics impact on these; how the use and management of resources is important to society and business competitiveness; and how it is necessary to communicate and present concepts to engineers and non-engineers alike. Mechanical engineers play key roles in all industrial sectors ranging from aerospace, oil and gas, through food and transport to manufacturing, chemical and entertainment industries. Professional mechanical engineers are at the forefront of the management of the earth’s natural resources by optimising the conflicting demands of the modern world. These challenges are clearest in the field of energy production where the long term supply of energy continues to be an issue of major technical and political importance. The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The School of Management and Languages, one of the largest in the University, is committed to providing our students with the education and personal development skills required to meet the needs of today’s international employers. The emphasis on student choice can be seen in the flexibility of the programmes we offer in Dubai. Currently, Management students can choose from four different undergraduate degrees and six postgraduate degrees. With the undergraduate degrees, there is a common first year where students take the same core courses allowing students to defer their ultimate subject choice beyond first year and effectively tailor their degrees to suit their needs and those of the modern business world. From the Academic Year 2011/12, we are introducing an MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management to support the need for well qualified professionals in logistics and supply chain management.
intErnAtionAl PErsPECtivE The School of Management and Languages in Dubai attracts applicants from across the Gulf region, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria and Kenya among other countries.
There is also the opportunity for all our undergraduate students to transfer to our main campus in Edinburgh after their first year of study here in Dubai.
EmPloymEnt sUCCEss Our excellent track record in graduate employment is proof that we produce graduates equipped with the skills and attributes required by employers in the Gulf Region and beyond. The MA in Accountancy and Finance, for example, is fully accredited by the ACCA, the global body for professional accountants, and many of our graduates are entering training contracts with professional firms and will qualify as chartered accountants.
are expected to have carried out independent study prior to the topic being discussed. We want our students to have views and opinions but these should be based on an understanding of the topic or issue before stating them. Students are encouraged to express themselves clearly and articulately as communication skills are increasingly important in graduate recruitment and hence the stress we place on presentations and group working. I look forward to welcoming you to the School of Management and Languages in Dubai in the near future.
Our Masters graduates have taken up various posts with an impressive list of companies and non-profit organisations and we hope that you will be joining them in pursuing a successful career after completion of your programme.
tEACHinG AnD lEArninG The emphasis in all our degrees is vocational and we endeavour to give students a broad-based education which reflects the British approach of critical enquiry and reflective learning. We encourage student participation in their classroom and tutorial environments and students

THE PROGRAMME Accountancy has often been described as the language of business and it has long been recognised that an understanding of accounting and finance is an essential prerequisite for those who intend to pursue a career in commerce, industry or public administration. The increasingly complex environment within which both financial and international business is conducted and the development and spread of computerised techniques continue to reinforce the need for such an understanding. The value of such studies is also recognised by professional accountancy and allied societies which offer, to approved graduates, substantial examination exemptions and reduced periods of pre-qualifying service. The Heriot-Watt programme in Accountancy and Finance is a specialist degree, particularly well suited to those seeking entry into the accountancy profession and careers in financial services or financial management. The aim of the programme is to encourage development of cognitive skills so that as students progress, they develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning, evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Successful completion of our Accountancy and Finance programme provides the maximum number of exemptions from professional examination bodies including the ACCA.
FIRST YEAR Students will follow introductory courses in four key subject themes of Accountancy and Finance, Economics and Management.
SECOND YEAR Students will begin to broaden their study of Accountancy and Finance. The accountancy subjects include Financial Accounting and Management Accounting. The finance subjects include Finance Theory and Markets.
THIRD YEAR Students undertake accounting studies in Auditing and Advanced Management Accounting. Finance subjects include Corporate Finance, Security Markets and Advanced Financial Accounting.
FOURTH YEAR The final year provides an opportunity for specialisation with studies in Accountancy Theory, International Accounting, Corporate Reporting and Managerial Accounting - Decision Making. Students must also undertake a dissertation in an area of accounting or finance that is of particular interest to them.

THE PROGRAMME The Management degree programme follows a number of guiding principles, which mirror the values of managers of leading organisations and reflect current management thinking. In the first two years on all Management degrees you follow a common programme which provides a strong grounding in the principles of modern business management and also introduces more functional areas of management including Marketing, Human Resource Management (HRM) and Organisational Behaviour. We believe that the real basis for management is experience. We will expose you to theories of management, case studies of companies, and give you the opportunity to work on specific management problems. For the Heriot-Watt programme in Management, students then choose from a broad range of subjects during their third and fourth year, allowing them to tailor their degree to meet their career needs and aspirations.

THE PROGRAMME The aim of this programme is to enhance the research and employment potential of students who seek to specialise in international accounting and finance. It is particularly suitable for those who seek to develop an academic career in research. It is also suitable for those seeking a professional career in this area, or for those already established in such a career who wish to extend their skill set and familiarise themselves with the latest themes of research in the areas of international accounting and finance. INTROdUCTION By RAjInDER kumAR SHARmA Many students in Dubai opt for the Degree Entry Programme as a sound means of bridging the qualification gap between school and university. There are many reasons why students decide to join our popular foundation year. Firstly, some students need to improve their English writing skills or gain a better understanding of UK study methods or it may be that the certificate obtained in their native country may not be accepted by Heriot-Watt University. Finally, the Degree Entry Programme will help if school leaving qualifications do not immediately qualify students for admission into the first year of our management, engineering or fashion degrees. Heriot-Watt offers three different one year Degree Entry Programmes that are specifically tailored to the Bachelor degrees that we teach, giving our Degree Entry Programme graduates the optimum start in their university career.
tHE tHrEE PAtHWAys ArE: Management Engineering Design Studies The programme is taught over two semesters, beginning in the middle of September and ending in June the following year. The students will be assessed through a combination of coursework, unit tests and exams. All three streams put strong emphasis on language skills – not only spoken English but also written and academic English. In addition to academic courses, the programme will include study skills where students will experience group work and improve their research skills. A combination of teaching and learning methods are used so that students will be prepared to progress onto an appropriate undergraduate programme following satisfactory completion of the Degree Entry Programme. I look forward to welcoming you to one of our three programmes, designed with you in mind.
