FOOD AND WATER RESOURCES

As Hurricane Harvey continues hovering over the state, the Texas Health and Human Services system has plans in place to help Texans. •

SNAP food recipients can now use their benefits for hot foods and ready-to-eat foods, such as rotisserie chicken or grocery store deli foods at retailers that accept SNAP. This will last until Sept. 30.

WIC participants can report lost cards by calling 800-942-3678. Dial 2-1-1 to find the closest WIC clinic that is open and get a replacement card and benefits. You will need to sign a self-declaration form saying you lost your card or benefits because of Hurricane Harvey.

If you need breastfeeding assistance please call our lactation support hotline 855-550-6667 for 24/7 support. Consultants also may be able to help if you are using formula to feed your baby and don’t have access to safe water or formula.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced programs to help Texans with home repairs, debris removal and other issues. Visit their website for details. (link is external)

Harvey is causing major flooding in Houston and along the Texas coast with flash food danger for most of the central and southeastern portions of Texas. Rain will continue falling across large sections of the state well into next week.

TEXAS EVENT RESOURCES

HARVEY 2017 HHS is prepared to offer emergency SNAP food benefits as soon as the federal government approves. System officials will be assessing damage to eligibility offices and are working to set up temporary offices where needed. If you or your family needs help from HHS, dial 2-1-1 or visit Your Texas Benefits (link is external) to apply for benefits. We are monitoring conditions at our state supported living centers and state hospitals and assessing the situation at nursing homes and assisted living facilities we license. The best way to protect your family from the effects of a disaster is to have a disaster plan. If you are a pet owner, that plan must include your pets. Being prepared can save their lives. If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND! Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
