PRESERVE THE IDENTITY This project is a regeneration of the local residential area in the historical old city district in Datong. It aims to advise the government to preserve local historical buildings and forms, and more importantly to protect local identity, community culture, resolve multiple problems through low-cost solutions and enhance the living environment to create a sustainable community.

02

Datong City is the second largest city in Shanxi Province of the China in the northern part. It has transformed from an industrial city into a tourist area, and has been vigorously repairing and reconstructing historical buildings and cultural relics. The government aims to develop the old city area into a tourist palace to grow the economy. That result in Some residents are facing the problem of housing renovation or demolition. The plan primarily is to demolish existing residential houses and rebuilt into old-style to improve living environment quality, which will cause those original residents not able to afford the prices and have to move out. That discretion not only will demolish the original building form, more importantly it will destroy the local identity and uniqueness. Simply renovating and rebuilding a building does not bring back the living habits of local residents. On the contrary, those new building weakens the character of the city.

UNIQUE CHARACTERS This place has unique characters. Over time, buildings have been constantly being demolished and rebuilt in local place. People reclaim the materials and rebuild building in another place by themselves with minimum skills in same texture. The Material be continuously recycled and reprocessed. That is low cost and sustainable for this place. It is clearly different from today’s unified construction.

SITE ANALYSIS Based on research, the existing houses, streets and living environment have many problems facing to the modern life. There are many historical courtyards in the old city, but due to the population increase in the 1960s and 1970s, a courtyard was shared by 6 to 8 families. For the sake of more living space, people have added many extended houses to the original building deconstruction. At the same time, this also leads to crowded spaces and narrow alleys and that could cause fire issue. Also, the toilet facilities are simple and crude which caused the dirty and unpleasant smell of the street. The area has the drainage system issue.

Semi-Private Multifunction Facility

This place was formed as a residential area around the Liao Dynasty (907-1125). There are many courtyards have historical value. Also, considering the local living habit, the coal storage rooms inside courtyards are not necessary when electric heating system takes place in. Remove those storage rooms could bring back the space inside courtyards for people to leisure. Some abandoned buildings could be demolished or reused as the toilet facility rooms and shared storage rooms.

Considered narrow street and low-income families mostly cannot afford cars. Therefore, cars could be banned in this place except emergency vehicles. The fire truck can access to main street from outside. For narrow alleys which only 3m width, the fire tricycles and hydrants in front of each courtyard are the fire problem solutions. And to encourage people cyclling. The street space will have more activities space, such as street market and vendors. Also, there could have space for plants.

REVITALIZING THE INDUSTRIAL AREA This project is a cooperate work, which is an industrial area redevelopment and based on the MYTO which is a research of relationship between people and space. We tracing our characters activities based on their social relations, place frequented and routine routes. We combine their routines and territorial feelings in the following MYTO map to show how the site will be used during different time of a week. Also, we separate the MINE feeling to positive and negative mine. Positive mine is when the people walk by the place, he feels the sense of ownership, feel of the possibility to change it. However, the negative mine means it’s a must have daily route, maybe they don’t like it but it’s a daily route so there is no choice.

Extend the space of the second floor to form a balcony space, which encourages people to watch the river view and increase the interaction with the first floor.

The second floor has different partitions and serves multiple purposes.

Connect the river to the road and create new building entrances to encourage small markets to use this area to boost their popularity.

The building at the entrance to the road can be connected inside and outside as a riverside bar.

The small space by the window provides the possibility of a partial view.

Extending the windows of the building enhances the connection between the interior and exterior, while at the same time illuminating the street at night.

The new entrance features graffiti art, which enhances the attributes of the art district.

The flexible interior seats offer a variety of features.

The artworks display.

The indoor coffee bar.

INTEGRATED URBAN DESIGN PROJECT The project is located at Nottingham. The regeneration aims to develop an urban park for both mixed functions residential and commercial. To create a place for people working in new employment space to enjoy, also provide a nice attractive residential neighborhood area with mix use open space for surrounding people. This project also plans to reduce the local flood risk issues on this area and the regeneration functions of the warehouses would be provided.
