Studio：Context & Grounding unsafe surroundings rely on volunteers totally forgotten history cracked walls a state of neglect

Granton Walled Garden has experienced a transformation of an overgrown corner into something magical, but there are still some problems, such as the perennial weeds, forgotten history and being on a state of neglect.

Problems summary: unmanaged plants

1. Granton Walled Garden is lack of a great irrigation system.

2. It relies totally on local community groups and volunteers.

3. It locates in an unsafe surrounding.

4. Some parts of the wall is cracked and needed to be repaired.

5. The history of the garden is forgotten.

6. Parts of the plants in the site are unmanaged.

7. The Granton walled garden is in a state of neglect and can have more people involved in.

The design preserves the original treatment of the site and its historical remains, combining the theory of healthy and wellbeing with a modern human touch. And by using the aim of attracting more visitors through the charm of the site itself and the production of the crops, in order to raise the awareness of the garden, making it better known and preserving the walled garden in return, it will also be a good virtuous circle, and it could provid funds or other eeconomic support for the long-term development of the garden based on the sale of the products.

Musselburgh, the largest town in East Lothian, is located about 8 km east of Edinburgh and forms an attractive coastline with a number of other towns. Easy access to major cities makes it a place of high human activity.

Musselburgh is lo cated at the mouth of the River Esk. This area are predicted to be vulnerable to flooding due to the effects of global warming.

For wildlife, the area in which Musselburgh is lo cated is quite attractive. The River Esk catchment has many SSSI sites and the coast around the estuary is also SSSI site, attracting migratory birds from the Atlantic, Arctic, Scandinavia, Africa etc., bringing high level of biodiversity.

There are many unique landscapes in musselburgh, such as rocks by the sea, dense plants and so on. Birds here have a lot of overlap with human habitation. Many people enjoy feeding seabirds and walking and walking their dogs along the beach.

This diagram lists the main species of shore birds and the seafood preyed upon by the birds, whose relationship forms part of the ecological food chain and therefore reflects the consideration of ecological design, a part of life that cannot be ignored.

COEXISTING—FOCUSED ON THE TENSION

Since industrialisation, humans and nature have entered into an increasingly fierce and uncontested war. As man invades the natural environment and wildlife territory with pollutants and noisy activities, nature is pulling back with flooding and rising sea levels.

In Musselburgh there is no longer the fierce medieval warfare and the whirring planes of World War II, but people still need to build huge defences - - sea walls along the coast in order to protect their territory in this "war".

We hope to propose a new future possibility that will put an end to this unsustainable model and create a dynamic balance between human communities, wild animal and nature.

To reduce the tension caused by flooding and sealevel rise, we designed an all-connected buffer system that emphasizes developing the rainwater treatment capacity of all kinds of urban green space and the urban streets, while protecting the natural buffer zones, and widening the river to increase its drainage capacity. The plan reduces the use of rigid defenders compared to the existing Marseburgh flood protection scheme and uses a variety of buffers to store and drain water and reduce the impact of flooding.

Sustainable Drainage System(SUDS) has been proposed and is widely used in the UK, and after field research and online research it is clear that it could also be used in Musselburgh to deal with potential flood hazards.

This system is also used in Musselburgh to deal with potential flood hazards, and is based on the division of urban green space into green roof areas, grassed street gullies and ecological retention ponds to meet the recycling of water and to reduce the risk of flooding to a certain extent.

In order to promote a more a sustainable touristic approach to alleviate the current pressure, should drew the scope of natural resources and human intervention on a map, and found the conflicting areas between the two. Those areas subjected to higher touristic pressure are identified through careful mapping, in order to come to conclusions, for example identifying which locations would benefit the most of more urgent intervention.

At last, I decided to choose Faial Island, because found that relatively speaking, the conflict area here is more concentrated and the problems are representative.

In order to promote a more a sustainable touristic approach to alleviate the current pressure, concluded the scope of natural resources and human intervention on the map, and found the conflicting areas between the two. Those areas subjected to higher touristic pressure.

The other reason for choosing these four sites is based on the background of the existing culture and history of the sites, to transform and upgrade the existing sites, and to integrate landscape theory.
