PIXELS BLOCKS COMMUNITY SPACE

CREATING INCLUSIVE AND VITAL PUBLIC SPACE THAT PROMOTES SOCIAL ACTIVITIES BETWEEN SKYSCRAPERS IN HONG KONG

The site, Wa-on Lane Sitting-out Area is located in Sheung Wan and is about 852 sq m with three different levels of space.Wa On Lane Sitting-Out Area is a public green space created in the cracks of high rise buildings in Hong Kong. The project is trying to enhance the sociability and individuality of the public space, using “pixel”as the design elements to create meaningful and profound plot experience and increase the possibility of socializing by maximizing the function of the public space.

Tang Lou is an important residence for the citizens of Hong Kong in the late 60th and the beginning of the 70th in 20 century. Nowadays, the disappearing Tang Lou is a symbol of traditional culture, it's crowded but filled with warmth and happiness. Compared to Tang Lou, the mordern and post-modern buildings are the products of spatial compression and contraction.

Hong Kong's culture has been deeply influenced by Western culture since modern times, but the traditional Chinese culture has never stopped influenced HongKong, especially Lingnan culture. So, Hong Kong is the combination of Chinese culture and western culture

The crowdness of physical space leads to a sense of squeezing in psychological space. And the living space of people in Hong Kong is constantly squeezed from surrounding high buildings, making people want to escape and create their own ideal spaces.

Hong Kong is a prosperous free port of trade and International metropolis, the third largest financial, trade and shipping center and International Center for Innovation and Technology.

Central District is located in the central and west parts of Hong kong, and it's the political and commercial center of the city. Central District is also one of the favorite spot for hundreds of tourists in Hong Kong to hang out.

Sheung Wan belongs to the Central and Western District of Hong Kong Island. It is the earliest developed area in Hong Kong. Sheung Wan maintains an ancient atmosphere and is also known for its providing a characteristic street for alternative shopping.

Wa-on Lane Sitting-out Area

Wa On Lane Sitting-Out Area is located in Sheung Wan, one of the older but very high density districts of Hong Kong. This almost hidden public open space has an area of 852 sq m, and is surrounded by residential buildings and is distributed on three levels that are interconnected by stairs and steps.

Especially on weekdays, most people who work nearby will come here to eat “dai pai dongs” during lunchtime.

Construction workers tend to have lunch and take a nap on the bench or the ground, even if here is not a popular place for having a rest.

The elderly are mainly users of the public space, and when the night comes, the place becomes very quiet with few users.

On Sunday, Filipino domestic helpers are the main users of public spaces. They usually eat their own food, chat, dance or sing.

The sitting-out area is not a vibrant space with very high density of use, and at night it becomes extremely quiet with very few visitors. On Sundays, the Filipino community would visit the place and spend most of their day there eating, chatting, dancing and singing.

HISTORY AND CULTURE OF PHILIPPINE DOMESTIC HELPERS IN HONGKONG

There are hundreds of thousands of Filipino maids in Hong Kong, accounting for 4% of the total population of Hong Kong. Filipino maids have become a part of Hong Kong culture, but both Hong Kong people and Philippine domestic servants ignore the important position that the other party occupies in the formation of their own subjects.

The Philippine economy faces difficulty , to reduce the national unemployment rate , Philippines using overseas Filipino worker remittances to improve national economy.

Domestic workers are an integral part of the Hong Kong society, foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong are mainly divided into: philipino, Indonesia,Thai workers.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

The problem of continuous high temperature in summer and lacking proper planting plants serve as shade, leading to unbearable hot environment in the field

WANJIALI SQUARE

Wanjiali Square is situated in Furong District, one of the core areas of the main urban area of Changsha.

The central building Wanjiali mall is the largest single high-rise building in the world with the main building covers an area of 426,000 square meters. The top floor of the centre mall is designed as a helipad that can accommodate 100 helicopters.

Wanjiali Square has many urban functions such as leisure, entertainment, business, hotel, tourism, shopping, and culture.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a kind of anxiety disorder. Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder usually have recurring thoughts or behaviors, even knowing them are unreasonable or excessive, patients still feel difficult to control and get rid of the thoughts or behaviors, instead, they need to be repeatedly confirmed to alleviate the pain. Red symbolizes danger and also represents warning and anxiety. Changing the direction of the door of every cube, and people who visit the site will lose direction of where they should go, which is similar to people with OCD feeling lost in their out of control mind maze.

Yellow symbolizes enthusiasm and hope, while dark blue symbolizes sadness and stillness. As the core symptom of bipolar disorder, experiencing depression and manic period are two opposite sides of emotions. DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

The core symptoms of depression are depressive thoughts, and loss of interest. On the one hand, the architecture uses a thin wall to symbolize the vulnerability of patients with depression, who need to be protected; on the other hand, a thick wall shows that they usually build high barriers that isolate themselves from others. The whole part of architecture has no windows, the only way that connects people in the room and the rest of the world is the pipe that come out from the room that turn left or right, staring at "outside world", which express patients with depressive disorder are calling out for help and care, while at the same time, they afraid to reach out.

A MODERN WINERY IN SOUTH AFRICA

FROM EXTRACTION TO SUBLIMATE - DESIGN

A winery is an exploration of boundaries between a man-made structure and natural landscape. Designing a unique modern winery for Kayamandi by telling stories of the hardworking farmers behind the scene and South African cultures will promote the development of local agriculture and boost the economy of South Africa.

19 CENTURY—CAPTURE

1795-1961: British colonization Slavery was abolished in 1833. The influx of British immigrants led to the development of the local economy, and the local people’s desire for political independence.

20 CENTURY—SEARCH

1910: The Union of South Africa

21 CENTURY—SUBLIME

In a country in which wine making is still predominantly a white, largely male profession, South Africa’s first black woman winemaker, Ntsiki Biyela, is a pioneer.

20 CENTURY—DIVIDE

1948-1994: Period of apartheid and racial discrimination in South Africa

21 CENTURY—STRIVE

Only by respecting their own painful memories and expressing them loudly is the greatest respect for themselves.

Walking down each vineyard and picking select clusters to take back to the winery for testing and tasting and this starts roughly four weeks before the expected harvest date.

Without fruit there would be no wine, and the process can be done mechanically or by hand.

In modern mechanized wine production, the grapes are normally crushed and stemmed at the same time by a crusher-stemmer.

once fermentation begins, it normally continues until all of the sugar is converted to alcohol and a dry wine is produced. Fermentation can require anywhere from ten days to a month or more.

The final stage of the wine making process involves the aging and bottling of wine.

Once fermentation is completed, the clarification process begins. Filtering and fining may also be done at this stage. Fining occurs when substances are added to a wine to clarify them.
