CREATING INCLUSIVE AND VITAL PUBLIC SPACE THAT PROMOTES SOCIAL ACTIVITIES BETWEEN SKYSCRAPERS IN HONG KONG

The site, Wa-on Lane Sitting-out Area is located in Sheung Wan and is about 852 sq m with three different levels of space. Wa On Lane Sitting-Out Area is a public green space created in the cracks of high rise buildings in Hong Kong. The project is trying to enhance the sociability and individuality of the public space, using “pixel”as the design elements to create meaningful and profound plot experience and increase the possibility of socializing by maximizing the function of the public space.

Hong Kong's culture has been deeply influenced by Western culture since modern times, but the traditional Chinese culture has never stopped influenced HongKong, especially Lingnan culture. So, Hong Kong is the combination of Chinese culture and western culture

Sheung Wan belongs to the Central and Western District of Hong Kong Island. It is the earliest developed area in Hong Kong. Sheung Wan maintains an ancient atmosphere and is also known for its providing a characteristic street for alternative shopping.

The crowdness of physical space leads to a sense of squeezing in psychological space. And the living space of people in Hong Kong is constantly squeezed from surrounding high buildings, making people want to escape and create their own ideal spaces.

Tang Lou is an important residence for the Hong Kong citizen in the late 60th and the beginning of the 70th in 20 century. Nowadays, the disappearing Tang Lou is a symbol of traditional culture, it's crowded but filled with warmth and happiness. Compared to Tang Lou, the mordern and post-modern buildings are the products of contemporary Hong Kong culture. Hong Kong is a prosperous free port of trade and International metropolis, the third largest financial, trade and shipping center in the world . Central District is located in the central and west parts of Hong kong, and it's the political and commercial center of the city. Central District is also one of the favorite spot for hundreds of tourists in Hong Kong to hang out.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND SURROUNDING CONDITIONS

THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF PHILIPPINE DOMESTIC HELPERS IN HONGKONG

The Philippine economy faces difficulty,to reduce the national unemployment rate , Philippines using overseas Filipino worker remittances to improve national economy.

DESIGN DERIVATION

The common phenomenon in modern cities: fast-paced city life and more homogeneous urban environment.

THE OVER CROWDED CITY

Wa On Lane Sitting-Out Area is located in Sheung Wan, one of the oldest but very high density districts in Hong Kong. This almost hidden public open space has an area of 852 sq m, and is surrounded by residential buildings and is distributed on three levels that are interconnected by stairs and steps.

POPULATION ACTIVITY ANALYSIS

The sitting-out area is not a vibrant space with very high density of use, and at night it becomes extremely quiet with very few visitors. On Sundays, the Filipino community would visit the place and spend most of their day there eating, chatting, dancing and singing.

Kin Sau Lane, which connects the site with many old buildings, is also a place with a unique cantonese food named “dai pai dongs”.

Especially on weekdays, most people who work nearby will come here to eat “dai pai dongs” during lunchtime.

Construction workers tend to have lunch and take a nap on the bench or the ground, even if here is not a popular place for having a rest.

The elderly are mainly users of the public space, and when the night comes, the place becomes very quiet with few users.

On Sunday, Filipino domestic helpers are the main users of public spaces. They usually eat their own food, chat, dance or sing.

people cower because their space is hollowed out, people need to open the window to breath because their minds are hollowed out.

The proposal of "slow city experience", space reflects sociality and individuality.

THE THRILL OF MATERIALISTIC THE NEED TO TAKD A BREAK SPACE OF SOCIABILITY SPACE OF INDIVIDUALITY FAST-PACED CITY LIFE

the living conditions and spiritual needs of foreign domestic helpers cannot be met.

Domestic workers are an integral part of the Hong Kong society, foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong are mainly divided into: philipino, Indonesia,Thai workers. There are approximately 223,394 foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong in 2005, and more than half of them come from Philippines. Meanwhile, Filipino maids in Hong Kong society is ensured by the unequal treatment which lacks of basic human rights.

There's always been a stereotype about philippine domestic helpers that in Hong Kong movies, most of the Fillipino maids are called Maria. It can also indicates that discrimination and the need for Philippine domestic helpers are at the same time in many people's minds.

Both Hong Kong people and Philippine domestic servants ignore the important position that the other party occupies in the formation of their own subjects.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a kind of anxiety disorder. Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder usually have recurring thoughts or behaviors, even knowing them are unreasonable or excessive, patients still feel difficult to control and get rid of the thoughts or behaviors, instead, they need to be repeatedly confirmed to alleviate the pain. Red symbolizes danger and also represents warning and anxiety. The core symptoms of depression are depressive thoughts, and loss of interest. On the one hand, the architecture uses a thin wall to symbolize the vulnerability of patients with depression, who need to be protected; on the other hand, a thick wall shows that they usually build high barriers that isolate themselves from others. The whole part of architecture has no windows, the only way that connects people in the room and the rest of the world is the pipe that come out from the room that turn left or right, staring at "outside world", which express patients with depressive disorder are calling out for help and care, while at the same time, they afraid to reach out. individual
