taipei port art center 1
This is a studio project in Taipei Port where has an impressive history of immigrants who brought the flourish for Taipei City, In this project, I tried to design an art center respecting the history and showing the spirit of the immigrants. Team memberďźšXiaoling XuďźŒ Yuqiang Ben. My work: Base investigation, conceptual design, modeling, rendering, plan drawing, video production.
The History “Bali”, formerly known as Bali Tapenkeng, formerly is the community land of Pingpu Ketagalan Bali Tapenkeng Club (Parrigon) . Due to its geographical location, it was the portal for mainland immigrants came to Taiwan in the 18th century. In 1683, Qing Empire occpupied Taiwan, and adapt restriction policies for entering Taiwan. So that it brought a large number of illegal immigrants.

The Site main facade
Due to difficulites of crossing the strait, nearly 60 percent of them will be drowning to death. However, Han Chinese still kept crossing the strait to Taiwan and settle in Taiwan. During the period Qing dynasty ruled Taiwan of two hundred years, Han Chinese immigrants shaped the social development graduatelly. Therefore, Taiwan has a saying: “six dead, three stay, one goes back.” Han Chinese immigrant community is gradually growing and setting root in Taiwan, which led to later development of Taiwan.

TAIBEI PORT ART CENTER The seashell shape of the building was meant to imitate the image of the painting of fish migration in the ocean. The spirit of the early immigrants to the Taiwan island is represented in this painting. They swum accross the ocean, fought with the mother sea, in order to get to a piece of the land where they can put the root and build their life on. They are the ones who brought the culture, the tradition and new life to Taiwan, and they should not be forgotten.
3
the INSPIRATION OF GEOMETRY
There is many advantages of implementing the seashell shape in our building which located in the middle of the ocean. They situated according to local mirco-climate and capture the primary wind to ventilate the building as well as providing great thermal performance in the humid and hot summer. Providing options to use the gradient angles walls in a variety of ways: 1. Close to the vertical angle is usually used as high windows, 2. At the low angle, it could be used as connection space of indoor and outdoor . 3. Low-angle slope roof can be used as outdoor performance space.
There is a bridge connecting the mainland and the island where the center is located. It is a vehicular and pedestrian bridge acrosing the water. The high speed vehicular flow is guided to go the lower floor of the building and get into the parking garage directly. It opens up a full floor of pedestrian walking deck on the upper floor.

cultural center design The project is to create a gathering place to the people who live in this city, to bring their life back to the nature, the artistic environment, the life stage and...
7
I was trying to create a very pleasant , open and interesting place for the people who come to the
cultural center.
I paid a lot of attention to the space between interior and exterior. In order to create a very interesting public space for the community. The platform created by cutting out the central portion of the massing, this central courtyard is a very great focus point of the project. On the other hand, the twisted shape also provide an opportunity for many huge sloped surface, which are accessible from the grade, through a walkable slope, which forms the stage
of the city
.
I also paid attention to the relationship between the building and the landscaping. And used very simple elevation articulation to make the building standsout as a clean and consise form. There are theaters, swimming pool and exhibition spaces in the building. They are allocated surrounding the central courtyard, which can be used as a outdoor stage. It is a perfect combination of form and function.
1 The Massing: The project is located at northeastern of China where is very cold in winter. For thermal consideration, the massing should be compact.
the problems
2 The Height: Rise the east side to increase river-facing building volume, and lower the west side to relieve the tension to the existing residential buildings.
3 Visual Connection: To create a platform and maintain the visual connection between the existing residential building to the canal.

2 The Sloped Roof: The sloped roof of the building itself is an open park for access.
3 The Sloped Roof and Central Court yard: The integration of interior and exterior spaces, to provide a central court yard to serve as the stage for the city.

This is a single building design derive from the urban design project I did for my thesis project (tractor factory master planning )in my fifth year. The design kept developing the concept brought up in the master plan and implemented into a architecture scale.
There are a lot of neighborhoods around the base but the lack of public sports and entertainment facilities. It brings the opportunities of sports consumption. The rise of online shopping have a huge impact for the retail store. The proposal for solving these problems is to design a space for both of sports and commercial. Combining sport space, commercial street and sport experience space, this sport-business experience center will sell sporting goods, provides exercise space, as well as offers great experience, and thus to become a hot spot for the community.

2. Take the advantages of using PV panel on the roof. The annual sunlight hours in Changchun is about 2200-3000. The energy each PV panel gain annually is 42005400MJ.

3. The elevator tower brings the chimney effect to the building to increase the natural ventilation of the building, so that to decrease the energy usage throughout the year. Closing up the semi outdoor space in winter, as well as using high-performance insulation also help for using less energy.

The site is a void of urbanization of Changchun city. With the relocation of the locomotive plant, workers/residents moved out. Year after year, the community going down turn. The community lose its vitality and attractiveness. Street is the most attractive part of urban life . Street, as the public space, is the skeleton of the city, as well as stage of urban public life. The colorful life of the city is the collective memory of its people, which has been lossing during the rapid urbanization.

The kaleidoscope is the Metaphor of rich public life. Streets become the stage, the people becomes the actors, actress and audience. The colorful
piece of kaleidoscope is the pieces of the events in the city life. Art is no longer distinguish from the daily, but to become numerous real clips of people’s life. In here, life and art collide, streets and theater coexist, which make people return to the public life, creating a kaleidoscope of the city. Street is the most attractive element in the city life.
1 Existing residents are: retired factory workers immigrate workers poor people
the problems
2 Existing site is: lack of public facilities full of non-permitted constructions with low land use efficiency
3 the open space is: occupied and boiler room cramped by storages in a triangle shape
4 the infrastructure is: old and lack of well maintainence lack of urban planning and no vibrant street lack of sanitary equipment
18
KALEIDOSCOPE - MIXED CITY HUB The concept of urban kaleidoscope, is to create a space to get people back to street life, to perceive the art of life , to inject new vitality to hte community. Transform the community into an urbanized, industrial, historical texture, reflecting the regional culture. Preserve most residential and add prefabricated housing units. And to complete the functionality of the community by introducing retail and commercial. After transformation, the upper part of the building turned into house, while the lower part maintain as the retail store. The multiple level of pedestrican that connect the whole community form a new way of shopping. Remove the temporary strucutures in the middle of the community, build a new theater, improve the pedestrian system, all of which contribute to make a new community space a kaleidoscope of contemporary city living. The nature of the architecture and the city is t provide a space for what occur within. I think caring for the people, and the place for people to meet, for event to occur are the eternal object for urbanism and architecture.

The rejuvenation of a run-down industrial community that brought its vital life back...
tractor factory master planning This is my thesis project in the fifth year. It is a very good conclusion for my undergraduate study, and also is the proof of my persuit of exploring the relationship between people and its city, the impact to human life by urbanization, the understanding of human scale, as well as the driving force that shape our community.
22
TRACTOR FACTORY MASTER PLANNING The site is located in the old town of Changchun City. The three axis of the city is the most upcoming development area of the city. The site is within 10km radius of the landscape corridor (Yitong River Wetland) and the commercial corridor. Under the new planning policy, this area has great potential to become the regional, cultural and commercial center. The goal of the project is to explore the possitibility
of the redevelopment of the site, by integrating new components systematically.
1 The traffic arround the site are very heavy. But the roads are narrow and congested.
23
2 The existing Diesel Engine Factory is a self-closed campus. It has lower density but not open to public.
3 Because of the enclosed campus, connection in the north-south direction is blocked by the factory.
4 The scale of the factory building is overwhleming to the residential neighborhoods.

In this thesis project, I explored a new form of skyway system in Hongkong. Combining the corridors with shopping malls, street market as well as public spaces. The skyway system link the buildings in different levels, creating a multi-level city.
City research — hong kong Urbanism Urbanism in Hong Kong is a result of a combination of top-down planning and bottom-up solutions, a unique collaboration between pargmatic thinking and comprehensive masterplanning, played out in threedimentional space. Footbridge networks throughout the city that grew piecemeal, built by different parties at different times to serve different immdiate needs, enventually formed an extensice network and became a prevailing development model for the city’s largescale urban projects. Ambiguous public space In Hong Kong, social space has been increasingly alienated from public control to the point that corporate power is close to being in command of all significant open spaces in urban areas. Public space are disapearing.

I learned so much during the internship. First of all, there was an insight into the top commercial design company working environment and atmosphere. It is a very great experience. Secondly, I learned a lot knowledge and experience beyond that of school books, including the real project submittal, as well as effective teamwork. Finally, of course, there is an opportunity to know a wide variety of very good designers, many of whom are graduates from GSD, as well as PHD candidates from Tongji University architecture school, and such.
29
Overall, I feel very grateful to our school for giving me this opportunity to take on a five months internship.
the internship program in GENSLER SHANGHAI 2013/06 - 2013/08 SHANGHAI GENSLER
I helped for two projects for preparing schematic design presentation package, And a very interesting group research for commercial office buildings. Besides that, I also got invloved to the construction documentation for a residential project. It was a very produtive internship program in Gensler and I was very lucky to be part of it.

建筑主要朝向效果图 BUILDING PERSPECTIVE I helped putting together the presentation package of the office tower project. It is the first time I ever worked on a real project. I was very nervous and afaird of making any mistakes. It is proved that extra attention to any technical detail is the only way to avoid mistakes. My supervisor taught me a lot, as well as how to work with other team member, as well as working in the office’s international wide server system. This is something you will never learn from a book, or school work.
