1.

DRIVERS ROLE: GENERAL

1.1

To drive a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) and operate ancillary equipment to load and discharge product safely from a road tanker.

1.2

This role will require the driver to collect, transport and deliver animal feed and products for human consumption between suppliers and customers. The work diversify between docks, farms, mills, depots, distribution centres all over the UK on a rolling four on, four off shift paten. This shift paten will require the driver to stay overnight in the vehicle 3 nights per week.

1.3

This role requires the driver to drive LGV commercials vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and up to 44 tonnes, including rigid trucks, articulated Lorries, tankers, and trailer wagons.

1.4

Additionally the driver will be required to use Information Communication Technology (ICT) to manage their own Safety, Health, Environment and Customer Service as part of their daily duties.

1.5

ICT shall also be used to monitor and measure conformity to compliance, job technical requirements, personal performance, risks reporting or other organisations requirements and statutory duties.

1.6

Health and Safety Policy and Codes of Practice that apply to the drivers working environment.

OTHER DUTIES: DEMONSTRATING ABILITY TO;

2.1

Plan routes to meet delivery schedules and customer demands given to the driver by load planners and/or transport manager

2.2

Keep written accurate and legible records of loads and products for delivery,

2.3

Use basic mathematics and conversion charts to calculate and communicate load transfer weights and discrepancies to weighbridge operator, customers and/or transport office in the event of a dispute,

2.4

Communicate and supervise the loading and/or unloading of a range of products and different configurations of loads at receiving and/or discharge points,

2.5

Calculate the distribution of the load to ensure the vehicle and/or trailer/tanker is used within the manufactures technical specifications,

2.6

Ensure loads are safely secured (security seals/lock attached where applicable) for transportation,

2.7

Comply with The Highway Code , Driving Standards Agency Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles and Transport regulations to minimum of a level 2 standard.

2.8

Source traffic information and changing route if necessary to meet delivery schedules,

2.9

Complete a) delivery documentation, b) load log books, c) records for recording vehicle and/or trailer use, to d) ensure they remain legible for audit and assessment purposes,

Manage own resource in order to meet EU Directive 2003/59 Initial Qualification and Periodic Training of “Drivers of certain types of vehicles. Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence� (CPC) and Industry Codes of Practice.

Manage risks arising from driving or work activities and report factors that may put the driver, others or the organisation at risk to the appropriate manager,

MANDATORY TRAINING FOR DRIVERS

7.1

Drivers are required to attend compulsory periodic training sessions as stated in Article 3(1)(b) of EU Directive 2003/59, Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Drivers CPC: the basics

7.2

Each compulsory periodic training course must be organised by an approved training centre. Each periodic training session must be of seven hour duration.

7.3

The must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years in order for me to retain a vocational license entitlement. The first period of compulsory periodic training will end in September 2014.

7.4

Should the driver failure to achieve the periodic training objectives by September 2014 it will result in the loss of their vocational license entitlement.

7.5

Compulsory periodic training is applicable to all drivers, whether they drive as selfemployed or salaried workers, and/or whether on own account or drive for hire or reward.

8

PERIODIC TRAINING REQUIREMENTS AND (Technical Regulations)

8.1

The knowledge for initial qualification and periodic training must include at least the subjects listed section 9. Trainee drivers must reach the level of knowledge and practical competence necessary to drive in all safety vehicles of the relevant license category.

8.2

The minimum level of knowledge for training may not be less than level 2 of the training-level structured to Decision 85/368/EEC(1), i.e. the level reached during compulsory education, supplemented by professional training.

ADVANCED TRAINING IN RATIONAL DRIVING BASED ON SAFETY REGULATIONS

9.1

MODULE 1: FUEL EFFICENT AND SAFE DRIVING

9.2

Objective 1: The driver is required to know the characteristics of the transmission system in order to make the best possible use of it: This includes curves relating to torque, power, and specific consumption of the engine. Area of optimum use of revolution counter, gearbox-ratio and cover diagrams.

9.3

Objective 2: The driver is required to know the technical characteristics and operation of the safety controls in order to control the vehicle minimise wear and tear and prevent failure: This includes specific features of; a) hydraulic vacuum servo brake circuit, b) limits to the use of brakes and retarder, c) combined use of brakes and retarder, d) making better use of speed and gear ratio, e) making use of vehicle inertia, f) using ways of slowing down and braking on downhill stretches, g) action in the event of failure.

MODULE 2 : LOADING/UNLOADING AND SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF LOADS

Objective 1: The driver is required to know how to load the vehicle with due regard for safety and hygiene rules, and proper vehicle use, this includes; a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i)

the forces affecting vehicles in motion, use of gearbox ratios according to vehicle load and road profile, calculation of payload of vehicle or assembly, calculation of total volume, load distribution, consequences of overloading the axle, vehicle stability and centre of gravity, types of packaging, pallets or liquids being transported. And Hygiene requirements and/or restrictions prior to load transfer.

Objective 2: The driver should know (where applicable to their role) how to; a) how to select the appropriate tools and/or equipment for main categories of goods/products needing securing, b) clamping and securing techniques, c) use of securing straps, d) checking of securing devices, e) use of handling equipment, f) placing and removal of tarpaulins,

MODULE 3: WORKING TIME and TACHOGRAPH

Objective 1: The driver is required to know the social environment of road transport and the rules governing it this includes; a) the required maximum working periods specific to the transport industry; b) principles, application and consequences of Regulations (EEC) No 3820/85 and (EEC) No 3821/85; c) penalties for failure to use, improper use of and tampering with the Tachograph or recording records. Additionally the driver is required to have knowledge of the social environment of road transport: rights and duties of drivers with regards to; d) initial qualification, and e) periodic training.

MODULE 4: CARRIAGE OF GOODS

Objective 1: The driver is required to know the regulations governing the carriage of goods, This also includes the; a) transport operating licences obligations under standard contracts for the carriage of goods, b) drafting of documents which form the transport contract, c) international transport permits and obligations under the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road, d) drafting of the international consignment note, crossing borders, freight forwarders, and e) special documents accompanying goods/products

HEALTH & SAFETY LAW

11.1

All managers, staff and contractors are required to know this information prior to training or working on site, Health and Safety Law “What you need to know”

11.2

All drivers of company vehicles are required to; a) Follow any training and/or instruction they have received. Use the Vehicle Operators Manual, Highway Code and Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles publications to update knowledge, skills and competencies in order to comply with the periodic training requirements of the drivers Certificate of Professional Competency (CPC). b) Follow any training and/or instruction they have received with regard to Transporting, delivering and /or collecting loads safely, efficiently with minimal fuel use and environmental damage.

11.3

Drivers are required to take care of their own safety and safety of other people who may be affected be their work activities.

11.4

Drivers are required to Co-operate with persons who issued and approved this job profile and on all health and safety.

11.5

If drivers feel inadequate precautions at load transfer points are putting anyone’s health and safety at serious risk or there is a risk of Environmental damage the driver should contact the persons named below immediately.

11.6

Drivers are required to follow policies and procedures which are located in the staff driver’s quality manual.

11.7

Insurance cover is provided and certification is located in the main office. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure all other legally required licenses and documents are displayed and/or complied for the benefit of road enforcement or audit officials as and when requested.
