Crochet Book No. 6 OING ·hac to the Sixteenth Century we find the art of lace making at its height, and just about this time deft, hands began to imitate the rich old laces in a crude way by _means of crocheting.

As

time went ()n tis method was .greatly improved; and today it is possible to produce exquisite specimens of the rarest designs with just a simple little hook and a high grade crochet cotton. Throughout this book will be found many delightful examples of Filet, Venise and Irish crochet with careful, concise instructions, but it must always be remembered that before beginning any piece of lace or crochet it is essential to have the proper working materials.

The

thread you use has as much, if· not more influence than your skill in effecting satisfactory results. A piece of lace,

for instance, is almost useless if it loses its shape or has that stiff, hard finish characteristic of laces made from inferior materials: . That Cordichet is so popular among needleworkers is due to its perfect manufacture. twisted crochet cotton of strength and lustre.

It is a six-cord, hard

Cordichet is made of long staple

Sea lslnd Cotton, beautifully mercerized and finished, and is unequalled for L;1ce making, Ta:tting, Crochet and Macrame.

every nation we find a distinctive type of embroidery or method of embellishing articles for either the home or person. In the Orient this art, perfected through ages and ages, is inherent and loved by both man and woman. China and Japan are quite without competition for the most elaborate decorative effects il). embroidery, and even today the frequent application of Grecian borders and designs, set in a separate sphere the particular style of work originated by the early Greeks and Egyptians. Again, we associate with Italy the most beautiful Venetian patterns, cut work and the like, while Spanish needlewomen have perfected to an un approachable degree the exquisite Madeira and drawn work. We again find still different and noticeably individual types of embroideries in F ranee and Germany, with entirely characteristic kinds in Ireland ; and so on throughout civilization, embroidery in one form or another becomes a medium for the outlet of what 'represents the artistic and beautiful. There is no method of embellishment that will so enrich the simplest garment as that of hand embroidery, and to assure the beauty and q uality of the finished work you have only to insist on Royal Society materials.
