£50m OSR threat as aphids turn up with turnip virus

As oilseed rape reaches its most vulnerable stages of early growth Karen Brewer reports that aphids on the wing from other crops threaten yield losses costing £50m from turnip yellow virus (TuYV) as the weather warms up. Monitoring of pest populations at Syngenta innovation centers across the UK has highlighted a huge increase in peach potato aphids (Myzus persicae) on the move in all the key arable growing areas. M. persicae, the primary transmitter of TuYV to oilseed rape plants, showed up in traps across all areas for the first time last week, increasing the risks to oilseed rape just when the crop is at its most vulnerable HGCA-funded monitoring work, carried out by Rothamsted Research, has shown up to 70% of the aphids could be carrying the virus, with early-season infection shown to have 4

the greatest impact on plant health, yield and oil production. Recalculating the work to a September 2014 crop value of £240/t, annual yield losses from TuYV of over 200,000t could be costing the industry approximately £50m a year, equating to nearly 10% of the total crop value. Growers are advised to take heed of the early warning, visually inspect their crops and be ready to spray where infestations are found. With pyrethroid resistance now so prevalent among M. persicae populations, Plenum is the only foliar insecticide currently available with a full label approval to control all aphids and minimize the risk of virus spread “It is important to get Plenum application timing as precise as possible,” advised Simon Roberts of Syngenta. “The aim is to prevent foci

of virus developing in the crop from the feeding activity of infected aphids, which could then spread further as the season progresses.” Plenum can give up to two weeks control of aphids feeding on treated plants and trials indicate the best results may be achieved from applications in conjunction with a high-quality methylated rapeseed oil adjuvant. “Aphids stop feeding almost immediately after ingesting Plenum; although they may remain alive on the plant for up to four days, they pose no further risk of virus spread.” Results from Syngenta’s innovation site aphid traps are published within hours of identification on the company’s website, along with latest results of the national aphid monitoring scheme.

Barley blow for British brewers

A record low nitrogen content in this year’s barley crop looks set to challenge British brewers who may have to switch to imported grains to keep the beer flowing this winter, reports Karen Brewer. But what’s bad for beer could be great news for whisky drinkers with the distilling industry delighted by the second set of results from HGCA’s cereal quality survey. So far 26,513 barley samples from across GB have been analysed, 32% from Scotland and 31% from Eastern England, showing an average nitrogen content of 1.53%. Some 10% down on the three-year average of 1.68% and the lowest result since records began in 1977. According to Amandeep Kaur Purewal, HGCA’s senior cereals and oilseeds analyst, overall British barley

quality is reasonable in terms of specific weight and grain size. She said: “The low average nitrogen levels this year will be beneficial to the distilling sector. However, for brewers, who require a higher nitrogen content, this could lead to a more challenging year ahead.” Average specific weight and nitrogen content for Scottish barley is lower than the GB average, at 65.1kg/hl and 1.45% respectively, but there is scope for these to change further as more samples are collated for the final release in around one month’s time. For wheat results from 71,106 samples, 52% from Eastern England and 18% from South East England, show specific weights and Hagbergs are close to or above average. Nabim Group 4 varieties account for the majority of the samples analysed

(37%) and the proportion of group 1 and 2 samples meeting the specification for high and medium quality milling wheat is currently lower than 2013, mainly due to the lower protein content. Dr Purewal said: “The average protein content remains the limiting factor in meeting milling specifications, although millers do have the option to compensate for this by adding further gluten or imported wheat to the flour mix at an extra cost. However, there are also some technical limitations with adding extra gluten depending on the end-use.” The final results of the Cereal Quality Survey will be published at the end of October or early November.

Arable efficiency focus for HGCA farms Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) is set to add eight new arable farms to its UK-wide monitor farm programme this winter, in a bid to help growers remain successful despite falling grain prices and increasing costs of production, reports Karen Brewer. Warwickshire grower Rob Fox, from Squab Hall near Leamington Spa, said: “With UK arable farms again under pressure from low prices and a large world harvest it is now as important as ever to really know your cost of production. Through the use of benchmarking and knowledge sharing the monitor farm programme is helping us to farm more efficiently.” Squab Hall is typical of the 12 existing monitor farms, commercial enterprises representative of conditions in their area, where the host farmer is prepared to allow neighbouring farms access to the farm and to their decision-making process. A proven, effective method of knowledge transfer with a farmerled, farmer-centred and farmerdriven agenda, the programme is to be expanded to a total of 20 farms with a series of launches running from York at the end of October, to Huntingdon in mid-December, taking in Wales and Scotland along the way. HGCA regional development head, Richard Laverick, described the move as: “A regional shift in our approach to engaging with cereals growers and a significant investment

8

in order to deliver it. It is farmer participation, collaboration and review of decision taking that makes this a successful approach. “Business improvement is a crucial part of the programme. With grain at prices not seen for four years, it has become even more important for farmers to understand their costs of production. A survey carried out by HGCA in 2013 indicated that, of growers questioned, only 13% knew their costs per tonne,” said Mr Laverick. Launch events for the eight new monitor farms are to be held as follows: • York: David Blacker, 31 October 2014 • Bath: Rob Addicott, 4 November 2014 • Winchester: Ian Cammack, 6 November 2014 • Stowmarket: Brian Barker, 14 November 2014

• Berwick-upon-Tweed: Richard Reed, 18 November 2014 • Newport, Shropshire: Sam Watson-Jones, 2 December 2014 • Cardiff: Julian Radcliffe, 4 December 2014 • Huntingdon: Russell McKenzie, 11 December 2014 Each monitor farmer will be in the scheme for three years, hosting meetings of local growers to share best practice and knowledge. The monitor farmers, their steering group and associated HGCA arable business groups will deliver benchmarking activity and peer review of decision-making on farm. While highlighting cost of production and efficiency, this will also bring a new focus on day-to-day farm decision-making. To attend one of these launch meetings, interested arable farmers should contact their HGCA regional manager.

Murray mints new name at CropTec Calum Murray, lead technologist for sustainable agriculture and food at Innovate UK, gives Karen Brewer the low-down on the recent name change, where funding is focussed and what information will be available to farmers at CropTec 2014 on the 19th and 20th November at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. “Innovate UK is the new name for the Technology Strategy Board, adopted this summer and intended to better reflect its role in supporting business-led innovation. Around 130 agricultural and food projects have been funded to date, with further significant investments made through the £70m AgriTech Catalyst, part of the UK Government’s AgriTech Strategy,” says Calum, who will be speaking at the Managing with Precision Seminar at CropTec.

areas: new methods of crop protection; sustainable protein production (reducing the UK’s reliance on imported protein crops); food processing; trait measurement technologies; agricultural engineering solutions and tackling animal and crop diseases. “We will also be supporting the R&D innovation hub that will demonstrate some of the projects that we have helped fund. Visitors will have the opportunity to give their feedback and suggest what might be needed in future projects. Since the beginning, our aim has been to support the development of innovative, business led solutions that will improve production on the ground; feedback from farmers is essential in this process.” To date, Innovate UK has supported six main food and farming

Calum explains: “Projects are identified through a competitive application process. They must be collaborative and have to be both led and match funded by industry. The need for sustainable intensification of agriculture is now an established concept with farmers challenged with feeding a growing UK and world population against a background of climate change and pressure on resources. At CropTec, we will demonstrate how Innovate UK is supporting agricultural technology and how farmers can help shape that technology.”

Innovation and Business features at Croptec CropTec 2014 to be held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough, 19-20 November, will provide access to some of the latest crop technology being researched and developed and give visitors the opportunity to influence future research priorities. They will also be able to discuss the business performance of their own farms and compare it with units of similar size. Two new features are the R&D Innovation Hub, supported by Innovate UK, which will showcase the latest technological developments for arable growers and give an insight into some of the novel ideas that are currently in the pipeline; and the Business Hub, which includes a business advice area and the CropTec cost clinic. The hub will allow visitors to discuss their farm business with a range of business experts and advisers.

“All the products and ideas on show at the Innovation Hub are designed to help UK growers become more competitive in an increasingly global marketplace and visitors will be asked for their views on which areas of technology deserve further development and investment,” says Stephen Howe, CropTec’s development director. “Managing the cost of production is essential in a short-term market where prices are volatile and there remains much political uncertainty. But growers need to take a strategic approach when they look at reducing unit costs of production to avoid any longterm damage to their businesses,” says Mr Howe. “Advisers at the business hub will help farmers ensure that the decisions they make are made in a way that strengthens their businesses for the future.”

Cost control critical to milk profit

Figures released at the Dairy Show on Wednesday 1 October reveal a significant return to profitability for UK milk producers but, as Karen Brewer reports, cost control will be critical in the coming months if they are to weather this autumn’s lower milk prices. A survey of clients’ accounts with year-ends in March and April this year by Old Mill, shows average dairy profits jumped by 4.54p/litre in 2013/14, to 3.41p/litre. However, since their peak in February, average UK milk prices have slumped by more than 2p/litre and with the possibility of further cuts on the horizon, producers are facing a difficult winter. “Milk price is, of course, an important driver of farm returns,” says Will Vincent, rural accountant at Old Mill. “But it is not the only

10

determinant of profitability. In 2013/14, our clients’ average milk price increased by 3.85p/litre, equating to 85% of improved profits. The remainder was made up of lower costs. “For the second year running, the top 25% of clients by retained profit actually received a slightly lower milk price than the bottom 25%,” says Mr Vincent. The bottom 25% also received more non-milk income, but the best performers had a better rein on inputs with overall cost of production almost 10p/litre below those in the bottom 25%. Although the whole range of farmers saw improved financial performance last year, the top quartile made profits of 6.54p/litre, while those at the lower end made a loss of 0.34p/litre. Excluding non-farm income, the top farmers’ gross margins averaged

17.18p/litre, with higher feed costs and lower milk yields eroding the lower quartile’s margin to 15.82p/litre. “When you look at farmers’ overheads, the difference is even more marked,” says Mr Vincent. “Labour and power costs were 3.89p/litre cheaper among the top quartile, with all overheads 6.33p/litre lower at 13.03p/litre.” Achieving such tight cost control is easier said than done. “The top farmers have attained better economies of scale, with an average herd size of 226 cows, 54 more than the bottom quartile and 12 head above our clients’ average. But it is not just about spreading the costs over a wider base. Personal drawings and tax were far lower among the top farmers, indicating greater investment in the business to improve future viability.”

Stop brome creep in winter barley firelds

New UK trials show application of selenium through fertiliser successfully raises grass supplies above guideline levels of 0.1ppm, overcoming the natural deficiency present in most UK soils and forage systems, reports Karen Brewer. Low fertility, high cell counts and a higher prevalence of mastitis outbreaks are common indicators of selenium deficiency on UK dairy farms, but white muscle disease, unthriftiness, growth depression, diarrhea, retained placenta, cystic ovarian disease and anaemia may also be symptoms. The traditional solution is to add selenium to the feed through inclusion of dietary supplements, but this is not always successful as inorganic sources may not allow efficient absorption by the animal, resulting in blood selenium

12

remaining below the critical level for a healthy immune system. Jez Wardman, agronomist at Yara UK, advises that some farms will need to reconsider their approach and switch to increasing the concentration in forage through fertiliser supplementation. “Grass takes up selenium during its normal growth pattern and incorporates it into its proteins. This is an important aspect as in this form it is more available than when in the inorganic salt forms associated with mineral licks and supplements.” Trials conducted at the Grasstech event near Elgin, Scotland have shown that where fertiliser with added selenium was applied, availability in the grass was consistently increased to above the guideline level. The eight trial plots all showed a significant increase in selenium availability after

fertilisation, with the greatest benefit was seen in long term grazing mixes and red clover, climbing from 0.06ppm and 0.14ppm to 1.16ppm and 1.17ppm respectively.

“Based on the deficiencies seen across all the trials we have conducted this year, it is essential to consider the level of all nutrients readily available in forage, in particular selenium, as most herds will not be gaining the concentrations required from forage alone,” explains Mr Wardman.

“Analysis of soil is recommended as deficiencies can vary on a field by field basis, this will allow decisions to be made based on all macro and micro nutrient availability that can impact upon animal health and production.”

FARMERS UK FARMING NEWS

Stop brome creep in winter barley fields

Sterile brome creeping in from field margins is causing problems for winter barley growers, becoming a significant nuisance in terms of yield and harvesting and causing some Scottish farmers to abandon the crop altogether reports Karen Brewer. According to Richard Allan, of Robertson Crop Services, sterile brome is found mostly around the headlands, but on some farms in Grampian and the Highlands it has spread right across the field. “In a few instances I have known farmers abandon winter barley as their brome problem has spread 20 to 30m into the field and control measures haven’t been adequate.”

To counter the problem the company, part of ProCam, has invested in a new Horstine TMA4 granule applicator which will enable them to use tri-allate granules in an anti-brome herbicide programme also including flufanecet. “We are hoping that a programme starting with Avadex Excel 15G granules (triallate), followed by Liberator (DFF and flufenacet) or Crystal (pendimethalin and flufenacet) at high rates will do a good job,” says Richard. Dr Dominic Lamb, of Gowan Group, reminds growers that drilling depth is crucial, 2.5-4cm for barley, 4cm for wheat, triticale and rye. “ A v a d e x

should be applied to well-prepared moist seedbeds. Avoid very cloddy seedbeds and consolidate loose and puffy seedbeds before drilling. Applied pre-emergence of weeds, you can expect useful control of annual broad-leaved weeds including cleavers, charlock, chickweed, common poppy, field pansy, field speedwell, forget-menot, fumitory, ivy leaved speedwell, mayweed and red dead-nettle. And Avadex is a non ALS herbicide if you are worried about poppy or chickweed resistance.” Avadex needs to be applied accurately, you can’t just get away with a spinner as this produces an uneven pattern on the soil and variable results. Robertsons will be offering Scottish growers a contract service, using the TM44 to apply the granules around the headlands or into the field depending on the level of infestation.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors

NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26

vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural

Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to

set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.

Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize

Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for

owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be

done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without

operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

Resistance movement in Yorkshire

Yorkshire farmer Nigel Durdy has had RRR blackgrass resistance confirmed on some of his land and ALS resistant poppy and possibly chickweed are also suspected. Karen Brewer reports on how he is adapting the way he farms to minimise the problem and increase his chances of controlling resistant weeds. “On land we contract farm, we’ve adopted a tight crop rotation of oilseed rape, wheat and wheat. The soil is heavy boulder clay and crops have been established by min-till for quite a few years now, so you could say that we have built up the blackgrass resistance problem ourselves, but I wanted to know the type of resistance we had, so that I could decide what to do next,” says Nigel. Tests showed the blackgrass resistant to Atlantis (iodosulfuronmethyl-sodium + mesosulfuronmethyl,) fops and dims, but knowing the resistance status helped decision making and longer term planning.

34

“We now do several different management approaches that we hope will help. The first is that we avoid min till and try to move the soil around quite a bit. As soon as the crop is harvested and straw removed, we work the land to a depth with a subsoiler, go in 7 to 8 inches deep with a Solo and then press down to make a good seedbed. As soon as possible we use stale seedbeds, at least twice and hopefully three times with glyphosate.

Broad-leaved weeds are also a problem, several fields with light land have a horrendous poppy population and chickweed is an issue on some sandy soil, both possibly a result of ALS resistance. Alternative herbicidal options include AstroKerb (propyzamide and aminopyralid) to control poppies in rape, Stomp Aqua (pendimethalin) for use in cereals or Shadow (quinmerac, metazachlor and dimethenamid-p) in oilseed rape.

“The second approach is that we delay drilling wheat until the end of September. Thirdly we have replaced the second wheat with forage rye destined for a local anaerobic digester. Forage rye is drilled in September and harvested in July, so it buys you valuable time at the end of the season to cultivate and use stale seed beds before the rape goes in. Giving yourself more time can really help. For this reason I wouldn’t consider growing forage maize as it is drilled in the spring and is harvested too late,” says Nigel.

Louis Wells, agronomy manager for BASF, has helped Nigel sample his weeds and manage resistance, sending poppies to Germany for resistance testing with results available early spring. “Nigel is making useful changes to the way he farms which should help. It is always useful to stand back and realistically assess what you can do to minimise weed resistance, by changing cultural practices as well as making different choices in the chemical armoury that you have.”

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.

36

A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure

is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before

the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every

month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

boost Farmer co-operative ACT sees 17.6% profit rgrowth CropTec 2014 to be held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough, 19-20 November, will provide access to some of the latest crop technology being researched and developed and give visitors the opportunity to influence future research priorities. They will also be able to discuss the business performance of their own farms and compare it with units of similar size. Two new features are the R&D Innovation Hub, supported by Innovate UK, which will showcase the latest technological developments for arable growers

and give an insight into some of the novel ideas that are currently in the pipeline; and the Business Hub, which includes a business advice area and the CropTec cost clinic. The hub will allow visitors to discuss their farm business with a range of business experts and advisers. “All the products and ideas on show at the Innovation Hub are designed to help UK growers become more competitive in an increasingly global marketplace and visitors will be asked for their views on which areas of technology deserve further development and investment,” says Stephen Howe, CropTec’s

development director. “Managing the cost of production is essential in a short-term market where prices are volatile and there remains much political uncertainty. But growers need to take a strategic approach when they look at reducing unit costs of production to avoid any long-term damage to their businesses,” says Mr Howe. “Advisers at the business hub will help farmers ensure that the decisions they make are made in a way that strengthens their businesses for the future.”

Farmer-owned agricultural supply co-operative ACT has boosted pretak profits by 17.6% for the year ending 30th June 2014, despite a £5m drop in turnover caused by

43

falling feed, fuel and fertiliser prices. Announcing a 20% increase in total year-end bonus payments to shareholders, up from £763,000 (0.8%) in 2013 to £918,000 (1%)

this year, managing director John Hamilton said the co-op experienced a record year for fertiliser sales, confirming ACT as a major distributor in the UK market. Commenting on the reduced turnover, down from £121m to £116m, Mr Hamilton said: “Feed and fuel demand suffered compared to the previous year, because of a much milder winter and spring and average fertiliser prices were about £30/tonne less.” Despite the fall in total trading for the nationally active co-op based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, pre-tax profits jumped £300,000 to top £2.0m for the year, up from £1.7m in 2013 and allowing the increased payout to member farmers.

No mistake from calf pen to dinner plate

Among 26 journalists from 14 nations at the IFAJ post-congress tour's first night dinner in Stratford-upon-Avon, there was unanimity in response to a question of fundamental importance to each country's farming industry. Reporters from 14 nations attending the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ post-congress dinner at Stratford-upon-Avon were served Aberdeen Angus ribeye steak courtesy of sponsors Sterling Sires, matched with a perfect red wine from sister company, Paul & Kirsty's Perfect Night In. "When this business started in 2012, we thought we were selling gourmet steaks and select wines to discerning, connoisseur consumers,"

46

said director, Phil Christopher. "But by analysing sales information and finding that 90% of sales have different purchaser and delivery addresses, we proved ourselves wrong. It turns out we're a gift company, competing with premium hampers, for example." As a result of seeing themselves from customers' rather than their own perspectives, the Perfect Night In team completely re-designed it's product range. Prime Angus steaks and carefully matched wines remain the centrepiece, with a focus on consistent meat quality, additional gift accessories have been added and presentation upgraded significantly. “Angus ribeye steaks served here are from the Blade Farming supply chain. From a calf's birth right

through to dinner plate, Blade's rearers and finishers of about 20,000 prime cattle annually all use the same production system,” said Mr Christopher. "So we know for sure the steaks will be the same premium quality at any time of year. They are always Angus-cross-Holsteins which have grazed for at least a six month period, were fed on a high quality forage based system and were protected against disease from birth by proven protocols. "When you buy a Coca-Cola, it's always exactly the same as last time. That's what customers want: Predictable and consistent quality. And that's one of the important things that livestock farmers around the world need to focus upon."

Mendham farming family so proud of champion Mystique A long-established farming family are proud to have won a string of prizes with their home-bred Limousin X, Mystique culminating in them sweeping the board at the Aylsham Show. Gary Kent, 47, a third generation farmer at Mendham, on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, returned from the bank holiday event jubilant after the 18-month-old heifer won commercial champion and interbreed continental champion awards before finally being crowned supreme beef interbreed champion. Earlier in the year the heifer won the commercial champion award at the Hadleigh Show in May and best Suffolk born and bred at the Suffolk Show. Next up was the Wayland Show, where Mystique claimed the commercial champion and reserve supreme champion trophies. Gary, whose father James, 76, moved to Mendham in 1939 at the age of one, said: “A friend persuaded me to start showing cattle seven years ago and told me I would quickly get hooked.

“I had always hoped that one day we would breed a champion and this year was our year. It is very unusual for a commercial animal to win such a prestigious award and the whole family are very proud of our achievements.” Showing cattle has become a real family affair with Gary’s son Hayden, 13, regularly taking part in young handlers’ events at shows in the region while his niece, Juliette Tompkins, has also had successes as

a young handler over the past few years. Kent beef is regularly available at Bramfield Meats, local butchers and restaurants in the Waveney Valley area, including the Sir Alfred Munnings Hotel and Public House in Mendham. Gary, who farms 650 acres, taking in both counties, said their plan now was to get Mystique in calf and hopefully breed the next generation champion.

New Welsh TB restrictions lifted New TB movement restrictions are to be introduced in Wales next month, although to minimise disruption to cattle keepers, the Welsh Government has introduced temporary measures called Interim Land Association Management (ILAM) arrangements. Cattle moving within Sole Occupancy Authorities (SOAs) will be subject to pre-movement testing from the 30 September 2014. However, herd keepers who previously had a SOA exemption may

now apply for permission to move their animals between linked pieces of land within a 10 mile radius, without testing, as long as certain criteria are met. Farmers wishing to apply for an ILAM should, in the first instance, contact their vet. All successful ILAM applications will continue until new arrangements come into force but farmers will be required to reapply for an ILAM if there are any changes in circumstance.

Reducing Ketosis Risk

A new liquid supplement for fresh calved cows is designed to deliver rapidly available energy and essential nutrients to reduce the risk of ketosis, an increasing problem in high yielders due to negative energy balance during the transition period. Farm-O-San Pro-Keto, a supplementary dietetic feed from Trouw Nutrition GB, provides extra energy from glycerine and propylene glycol plus niacin, choline and vitamin B12 to support liver function. An easily poured liquid, Pro-Keto should be fed during the last 10 days pre-calving and for the first 3-6 weeks of lactation at a rate of 250ml per cow per day. It can be top dressed onto forage, incorporated into mixed rations and is also suitable for feeding through robots.

Dairy & beef producers need BVD advice An inconsistent approach to the cattle disease Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) across England and Wales has raised veterinary concerns and brought a call for more targeted advice to help dairy and beef farmers tackle this complicated infection, reports Karen Brewer. James Russell, from independent vets McMurtry & Harding, said: “BVD is a serious, industry wide problem and one that farmers are clearly aware of, but much work needs to be done in providing practical advice about how they tackle the virus in their herds.“ Presenting results from the Farming Against BVD survey at Novartis Animal Health’s Surrey headquarters on Thursday 18 September 2014, Mr Russell said that while over 70% of respondents have a herd health plan incorporating BVD: “It is deeply concerning that 49% of farmers questioned had not tested their herd for BVD in the last 12 months and of those that did, 83% did not test their young stock. So whilst farmers may be aware of BVD, there appears to be a disconnect between awareness and practical activity in the detection and then eradication of infection from their herds.” Although effective vaccination against BVD has been available for the last two decades, the disease continues to cause significant problems; with infected cattle suffering from abortion, infertility and suppressed immune systems, leading to poor productivity. It was these issues that stimulated

54

Farming Against BVD panel members (L to R) James Russell (vet practitioner, McMurtry & Harding), Caroline Dawson (Novartis), Tony Brooks (herd manager, Brighthams Farm), Professor Joe Brownlie (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, chairman of BVD Scientific and Technical Working Group), Dr Peter Nettleton (fellow of the Moredun Research Institute – not pictured).

Novartis, in conjunction with the Royal Veterinary College and independent vets McMurtry & Harding, to initiate the Farming Against BVD survey, which questioned 301 dairy and beef farmers from every region of England and Wales, representing over 70,000 head of cattle. One of the most significant findings is the attitude of farmers towards testing and subsequent failure to identify Persistently Infected (PI) livestock within their herd. Any calf from a BVD PI cow will itself be born persistently infected with the virus and cannot be cured. As a result, future vaccination of this animal is rendered ineffective and it will become a source of the virus, spreading infection within the herd. Given the potential for such cattle to become reservoirs of infection within a herd, failure to test, identify and then deal with PI livestock represents the most significant problem facing the industry when trying to eradicate BVD.

Professor Joe Brownlie, from the Royal Veterinary College, voiced his worry that 39% of farmers who found BVD present in their herd did not then go on to test for PI’s. “Of the 61% of farmers that did do follow up tests, one third found one or more PI’s within the stock holding.” He said the disease can be hidden and farmers could be in the dangerous position of potentially missing PI animals that are in their herd; PI’s that can continue to spread the BVD virus amongst other cattle and pass on their PI status to any calves they produce. It is hugely important to be thorough and consistent in your testing as part of an agreed herd health plan.” The project, aimed at increasing farmer awareness and understanding of the virus, has been driven by a select panel of industry experts and indicates that action needs to be taken to educate farmers about what to do once BVD and, most significantly, PI's are discovered amongst a herd.

Fats get the cream Incorporating highly digestible fats into dairy cow rations will be an effective way to complement this year’s silages to increase production, make the most of milk contracts and reduce the risk of sub-acute rumen acidosis, reports Karen Brewer. Two new products available for the first time this autumn, are Venus and Omega Cream, both supplied as free-flowing palatable meals by feed supplement specialist UFAC UK. Venus is a blend of fatty acids derived from vegetable oils, combined with glycerine and omega-3 oils from marine sources, formulated for use with transition and early lactation cows. “Getting the cow established in lactation is

crucial for profitable milk production,” says UFAC’s Mike Chown. “Feeding glycerine increases liver function and helps limit body condition loss in early lactation, reducing the risk of fatty livers. In our rumen-inert form, the glycerine helps the cow meet its requirements for glucogenic energy. It also improves the utilisation of all fats in the diet, something that is further enhanced by the inclusion of blended unsaturated fats which are more digestible than hard fats. Feeding omega-3 oils from marine oils is the most effective source to help improve fertility and the immune system.” Omega Cream provides a precisely formulated balance of

essential fatty acids and C16 fat, designed to improve milk butterfat content and help farmers offset the decline in milk prices by exploiting milk quality payments within their contract. Inclusion of Marine omega 3 is also included to support fertility and the immune system.

According to Mr Chown: “Supplying a balanced range of fatty acids in a rumen-inert form will help ensure cows maximise butterfat production cost effectively. Omega Cream’s unique combination of highly digestible fats from vegetable sources, and added glycerine, ensure that the cows use the maximum amount of fat provided with less waste than with other fat sources.”

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

Orchard spraying technology comes to the broiler house

Mist sprayers originally designed for use in orchards and vineyards, where a 360-degree spread of mist is needed to apply pesticides to fruit and vines, can also significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of poultry shed disinfection routines, reports Karen Brewer. “Mist sprayers offer a fast, safe and effective alternative to more labour intensive methods of disinfecting broiler sheds,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn Farm Machinery. “What might take two or three people a whole day to do with knapsacks can easily be accomplished within a few hours with a suitable tank mister. This makes the use of a tractorpowered sprayer perfectly suited to sites with multiple sheds or where the availability of reliable labour is at a premium. “Misters are both more efficient

92

and more consistent,” adds Mr McLeish. “Their 360-degree spray pattern ensures all surfaces are thoroughly disinfected, thereby reducing the risk of disease and infection being spread by crosscontamination from one batch of birds to the next.” Kuhn’s GEO and GEO M range includes mounted machines equipped with polyethylene tanks of 300, 400 or 600 litres, and trailed models with a tank capacity of 1,000, 1,500 or 2,000. Turbine diameters range from 300, 400 or 600mm on mounted models and 750, 850 or 900mm on trailed models. All using proven crop sprayer technology and are fitted as standard with fresh-water rinsing and hand-wash tanks to comply with all applicable safety standards. Spraying function on the more basic GEO M models is controlled manually with valves mounted on a

single manifold. This manifold can be replaced by an electronic, in-cab controller (standard on the GEO range) for increased operator comfort and enhanced spraying precision. Both ranges have galvanised steel frames for greater resistance to corrosion and chemical attack and are equipped with piston-diaphragm pumps with a flow rate of 51, 71 or 89 litres per minute at operating pressures from 0 to 40 bar. They are available with air guiding vanes to ensure an even mist pattern and single or double vane mounted outlet jets to increase air flow and spray coverage by up to 20%. Kuhn’s smallest 550mm turbineequipped machines can be used with 15hp tractors while the largest 900mm turbine machines require 50hp.

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

Front-Mounted Shedder for Biomass Harvesting A new front-mounted shredder for harvesting high volume energy crops such as Miscanthus is now available to UK biomas growers. Kuhn’s WS 320 BIO can also be used as a reverse drive shredder and features a hydraulic reel and hood, which enable large volume plants and lodged crops to be shredded easily and efficiently. Designed for use in conjunction with a baler for shredding and harvesting in a single pass the WS 320 BIO has a central rear opening and hydraulically driven worm screw, for windrow formation. The 72 Yshaped shredding knives turn at a relatively low speed, on a 220mm rotor, to deliver a coarse shredding

action and a typical 15cmplus chop length for easier pick-up by the following baler. According to Kuhn’s Duncan McLeish: “The WS 320 BIO has been designed to offer maximum reliability and uses thick steel plates and two sturdy support beams to

create a robust machine with a 3.23 metre working width.” Cutting height can be adjusted from 4 to 15cm and the recommended tractor power requirement is 150-300hp

CHANGE AT THE TOP FOR KUHN French machinery manufacturer Kuhn, headquartered at Saverne but operating across five continents and with 12 production sites in Europe, North and South America, has a new man at the top.. To ensure continuity Mr Siebert, who has served Kuhn for more than thirty five years the last 15 as president will remain chairman of the board and conduct certain non-operational missions for some time. Under his leadership Kuhn developed annual revenues of 1 billion euros, 30% from North America, and employs 5,000 people. Mr Siebert said: “This promotion from within our own organisation serves as a testimony of our commitment towards an ambitious strategy of continuous growth.”

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

New McCormick dealer in Suffolk admits he was reluctant to even consider adding a tractor franchise to the business having dropped another make a few years ago. Agri-Hire is a family owned business, established in 1986 to hire out cultivation equipment to local farmers and now probably the largest muck spreader hire operation in the country.

Agri-Hire, currently based at Bramford, Ipswich, but soon moving to new premises close by,

is to be the Suffolk dealer for McCormick tractors, taking on sales, service and parts support.

Managing director Tim Hubert said McCormick compact and farm tractors will join the hire fleet. Tractor sales will run alongside Agri-Hire’s large Dowdeswell plough dealership and implements from several other manufacturers, including Standen Pearson, McConnel, Shelbourne Reynolds and Major Equipment.

Award for John Deere’s F1 gearbox John Deere’s innovative DirectDrive transmission was judged winner of the tractor category in the new International Machinery Manufacturers Awards (IMMA) presented at Cereals 2014 in June. Judges, drawn from the Agricultural Engineers’ Association, Institution of Agricultural Engineers and Royal Agricultural University, said: “The potential for greater efficiency and lower fuel use is great.” Significant fuel savings of up to four per cent, compared with currently available transmissions, have been measured on the test facilities at John Deere’s tractor factory in Mannheim and during independent field tests. The newly designed 24-speed DirectDrive transmission employs Formula 1 technology on John Deere’s six-cylinder 6R Series tractor range to combine the handling comfort of an infinitely variable shift transmission with exceptional efficiency. It is designed to deliver maximum

productivity with lower fuel consumption for tasks that need continuous power, such as ploughing and towing, pto work and road transport.
