SHAPE TO SHAPELESS Gelatin Used As A ‘Shapeless’ Formwork

This project focuses on shapeless materials, takes a potentially playful material, and approaches it very poetic and technical. Gelatin is used as a ‘shapeless’ formwork, something that allows the positive to form the negative as both change states. We used a hybrid of precise digital and experimental physical methods to get an increasingly layered feedback loop of design, discussed the pros and cons of the increase and decrease of material information in the process from manual to digital, and concerned with scaling intricate manual findings to something viable over a whole building or whole construction system. 这个项目以无定型的材料“明胶”为研究对象,通过既诗意又技术的方 式进行材料的研究。明胶被用作一种没有形状的模具,正形和负形的 材料在互相塑造对方形态的同时会伴随着自身状态的变化。我们采用 精确的数字技术和材料实验方法的组合来获得一种设计的反馈循环, 去讨论从手工实验到数字建造过程中材料信息的增减的利弊,并关注 如何将复杂的手工模型纹理扩展应用到整个建筑或整个建筑系统中。


Reference Shapeless materials are fluids that have no fixed shapes. Their shapes come from the container that carries them. Conventionally, cast materials like plaster, concrete and clay use restrictive formwork, fixing them into hard shapes. This is despite them having far more dynamic propensities.

Our project seeks to challenge the conventional perspective of architecture as a static and finite object, by proposing a new concept: the shapeless material.

At relatively low room temperature, the viscosity of gelatin changes with time and temperature as it solidifies.

Controlling Over Shapeless Materials Chemical factors such as the makeup of the material itself, and physical factors like temperature and surface tension, will affect the forming of shapeless materials. METHODS TO SCALE UP ONE PIECE Both manual fabrication and digital fabrication methods can scale up these blocks. These two methods are not contradictory and incompatible with each other. On the contrary, when manual fabrication and digital fabrication are combined, more changes and new possibilities can be created for the design. The procedural design steps and construction methods thus became our subsequent focus of discussion.

The planning of an university is always being developed and the additions or renovations last for decades. As the university is growing, it's necessary for students to use transportations such as bikes. So I invent a new kind of facade of the dormitories where students could spend most of their time. Students could enter each unit through windows. By using hydraulic system , Internet and smart phones, students can make each room larger. 大学校园的占地总是在持续扩张,伴随而来的是建筑的加建改 建。这样校园中的学生只能通过各种的交通工具来满足远距离出 行,才能使生活更加便捷。所以为了解决这样的问题,我提出了 这样一种新的宿舍模式:学生们在宿舍里通过窗户可以进入立面 上的模块,这些模块不但能提供公共服务同时还可以使每个宿 舍单元变大,并通过手机和互联网的应用可以调节模块的移动。

In this design, the boxes are storaged on the roof and could be delivered to each room.

It is not convenient for students to walk a long way to reach some public places in their schools. So I put forward an idea - Boxes which contain these functions are installed along the dormitory's facade.Boxes are connected with interior so that students could enter them and use the functions.

Site This dormitory is in HIT, Harbin,China, which is very old and modest. The new system delivers boxes to every room and make the inner space larger. This system could be used in any other dormitories. 这个很古老简陋的宿舍位于中国哈尔滨的一所大学。新的运送系统将模块送到每个房间,使宿舍内部空间更大。该系统也可用于其他类似的宿舍。

Modules There are 8 types of boxes in this system. They form a new kind of mutifuctional facade and give more space to each apartment. In this way, students would have a more convinient life. 此系统中有 8 种类型的模块。它们形成了一种新的立面,给每个公寓提供更多的使用空间。这样,学生的宿舍生活会更有活力。

Welcome to A World of Special Delivery This design could be used to reconstruct many other dormitories which seem to be made up of rooms of similar sizes. If possible, the dormitory buildings would change to a world of special delivery. 这种设计可以用来重建许多其他的宿舍,这些宿舍由尺寸相似的房间组成。如果可能的话,宿舍楼将变成一个‘特别快递’的世界。

Generally speaking, the function and space are the starting points of kindergarten design and children usually study in closed rooms. Sometimes violations and abuses might happen in the dark corner. However, in this kindergarten, by opening some space to the public, people outside could observe the situations inside. In order to organize the functions and circulations better, the public space of children is designed close to the outer boundary while private space is in the center. In addition, the children also like running around in such circlular space. 通 常 来 说, 幼 儿 园 的 设 计 是 以 功 能 布 局 和 流 线 组 织 为 出 发 点 并 且 教 室 通 常 是 封 闭 的 形 式。 这 样 就 导 致 了 一 些 对 儿 童 的 暴 力 或 者 侵 害 悄 然 而 生。 但 是 在 这 个 幼 儿 园 里 边, 通 过 某 些 空 间 的 开 放, 外 面 的 人 可 以 观 察 到 室 内 的 儿 童 活 动。 儿 童 的 公 共 活 动 空间安置在建筑的外边界一侧而私密的空间布置在建筑内部 中 心。 而 且, 这 样 的 环 绕 型 空 间 符 合 孩 子 绕 圈 奔 跑 的 天 性。

Site Map Overview

This design aims at creating a new type of kindergarten which is open to public space and citizens.People could see through public space but some private space such as bedroom is still in privacy.

The roofs and walls are made of concrete. Roofs are divided into 2 parts: one for children in the kindergarten and the other for citizens. They could rest or do some outdoor activities on the roofs.

这个设计旨在打造一种对公众和市民开放的新型幼儿园。 外面的人可以观察到公共的空间,但一些私人空间如卧室,仍然处于私密位置中。

屋顶和墙壁由混凝土制成。屋顶分为两部分:一部分用于幼儿园的儿童玩耍,另一部分由居民使用。他们可以在屋顶上休息或做一些户外活动。

Relashionship The small spaces for children have four types and create four kinds of relationship:men-nature,parentschildren,teachers-children and children-children. The scale correspond with the height relationship between adults and children, which makes the interior space attracting. 儿童的小空间有四种类型,并创造了四种关系:人与自然、父母与孩子、教师与孩子和儿童与儿童。比例尺度与成人和儿童之间的高度关系相对应, 这使得内部空间更有吸引力。

BEING-TOWARDS-DEATH Cemetery as a Kind of City Landscape

Project Final Instructor:Independent Individual Academic Work Location:Nanjing,China Duration:2017.2-2017.4

Through the reunderstanding of the cemetery building’s atmosphere, this design shortens the distance between the living and the dead, and puts forward ideas to make dense storage of ashes on the water. The pontoon device allows the building to float on the water, and people can walk or move on it. The people who want to mourn will pass through a series of monumental space and finally reach the end, taking a boat to the location of the pillar in which their relatives' ashes were buried. Ashes of a whole family could be buried in one pillar and the pillar's height will grow if more ashes will deliver to it. 这个设计通过对墓地建筑的再诠释,缩短了生者与死者之间的距离, 并且涵盖了集约化存储骨灰的想法。浮筒装置漂浮在水上,并且人们 可以在上边行走活动。来这里祭祀的人通过了一系列的纪念性空间后 来到最终的码头坐船到水中去祭祀。每一个柱子里可以容纳一个家 族的骨灰,所以随着去世的人数增加,柱子的高度也会产生变化。

4 Volumes 体量 Some parts are designed and become masses,which are related to the scenery around the lake.

Cemetery is always regarded as a depressed place with terrifing atomosphere. And it is also not open to city and people in Asian. 一般在亚洲,墓地总是被认为是一个可怕恐怖的地方,它也不向的城市和居民开放。

Background Research and Analysis

Perspective From the Land

In Asian,the cemetery is always located in the suburb and people usually don't want to be closed to it. So I try to make it in city,near residental area and close to daily life.

The process of memorial ceremony includes waiting, gathering, mourning, communicating and so on. These parts are held on some platforms of different sizes and atmosphere.

在亚洲,墓地总是位于郊区,人们通常不想与之亲近。所以我试图把它安放在城市,临近居民区和日常生活。

追悼仪式包括等待、聚会、悼念、沟通等。这些活动在一些大小和气氛不同的平台上进行。

A Pillar for A Family Ashes from a person or his family members are put into similar balls and the balls are fixed on a pillar one by one. As a result, the height of the pillar will rise and their heights are usually different. 一个人或他的家人的骨灰被放入类似的球并且球一 个接一个地固定在一个支柱上。因此,柱子的高度 会上升,不同柱子高度通常不同。

The Light of Pillar If someone comes here to mourn,the pillar will give out light. If they don't come, the pillar will be dark. 如果有人来这里进行哀悼,柱子就会发出光。如果 他们不来,柱子则不发光。

Platform and Lake People could choose the location of a pillar and its site is planed in advance. A pillar belongs to a family and the members could come here and mourn, which is a good way for a whole family to communicate. Starting from urban planning, this museum design creates a public space while reconstructing the place. The roofs with landscape provide public space for people to enjoy and walk around. People could choose to enter the museum or do outdoor activities only. The project is a combination of museum and park, not only respecting existing historic building but also creating pleasant indoor and outdoor spaces. 这 个 博 物 馆 设 计 从 城 市 设 计 出 发, 在 改 建 的 同 时 创 造 了 一 处 公 共 活 动 空 间。 上 人 屋 面 可 供 人 们 休 憩 行 走, 对 于 那 些 不 想 进 入 博 物 馆 的 人 他 们 可 以 选 择 只 停 留 在 室 外。 整 个 建 筑 是 公 园 与 博 物 馆 的 结 合, 在 尊 重 现 有 建 筑 的 同 时 也 创 造 了 好 的 室 内 外 空 间。

Background Introduction

Site Analysis and Volume Strategy of Honglou

The area of 'Honglou' locates in Anshan, Liaoning province, China. It has 18 Soviet style buildings. The government tends to reconstruct the southern and northern parts to a cultural innovation center.

Honglou is an important part to activate the town. It has 18 old dormitories for factory workers in 1950s. The government will change the functions to housing, commercial and plaza for people.

" 红楼 " 位于中国辽宁省鞍山市。由 18 座苏联风格的建筑组成。当地政府倾向于将该地区重建为文化创新中心。

红楼是激活该城镇的重要因素。在 20 世纪 50 年代是 18 栋工厂工人的旧宿舍。政府计划改变它的功能,为当地人民提供住房、商业空间和广场。

The roof covered by soil and grass is to keep warm and save energy in cold places. The sunken plaza provides a place for people's daily activities. This design reserves the shape of old square before while adding two new volumes and making the place more interesting. 被土壤和草覆盖的屋顶在寒冷的地方有助于保暖和节约能源。下沉的广场为人们的日常活动提供了场所。这种设计保留了广场之前的形状,同时 增加了两个新的体量,使这个地方更有趣。

View on The Steps This design takes the landscape into consideration. My idea is using green roof to change the atmosphere to a pleasing one, so that people could come here ,exercise and have a rest. 此设计考虑了自然景观。我的策略是用绿化屋顶把气氛改善周围的环境气氛,这样人们就可以来这里锻炼和休息。

1-1 Section Inside the museum, there are some exhibition halls with different heights while their roofs constitute the outside activity platform. Sometimes, people could walk from new volume to old buildings or from interior to exterior, which helps them to feel the contrast . 博物馆内有一些不同高度的展厅,而屋顶则构成外部活动平台。有时,人们可以从新建筑走到旧建筑,或从内部走到外部,这有助于他们感受到体量的对比。

View Inside The Museum The render gives informations about the interior design of the museum. The space inside is correspond with the space outside. From the first floor, people could see activities on the other floors. There is no restrict of sight or room, which stands for a new special type for exihibition. 这些效果图展示了博物馆室内部的设计。内外空间是相对应的。从一楼,人们可以看到其他楼层的活动,没有视线或空间的限制,这代表一种新 的展览空间类型。

The pavilion, located in Sheffield, England, exists as a secondary entrance to the Waitrose supermarket and provides a greenhouse for residents there. This design applies the 'Grid Shell' to the timber structure. We use grasshopper to simulate stress condition to find the shape, transforming the building conditions into the parameters of output. Finally we get a beautiful and practical roof system. At the same time , it is a connection between two existing buildings, which not only creates an abundant space but also combines with the old buildings well. 这 为 网 同

Details Construction Inserting steel in timber is beneficial for fireproofing and decreasing moisture corrosion.The roof and every side are also covered with glass to protect the inner space from water. 钢插入木材中有利于防火和减少水分腐蚀。屋顶和每一个侧面都覆盖着玻璃,以保护内部空间阻隔雨水。
