Happy Holidays!

A

lthough the weather is a bit colder in December, Los Gatos puts so much planning into the holiday season that it almost warms you up, and certainly makes downtown very welcoming. Holiday shopping with fabulous window displays, twinkling lights galore, and ‘Hallmark greeting card looking’ carriage rides meandering down the street, you wouldn’t think anything could be topped, but yes, they are adding valet parking as well. See the Save the Date page 23 for more information on these and other events, such as the Sunday Farmers Market. Speaking of the Farmers Market, make sure to drop by for a salad from Ecopia Farms as they offer a special savings for you to do so included in this issue. I have tasted their gourmet, easy to assemble, salad with organic ingredients and know you will be amazed and pleased. Ecopia Farms also welcomes you to their indoor ‘farm’ in Campbell not too far from Aldo’s and the Netflix location. They are open for shopping and you can even view their incredible LED indoor farming with ‘space age’ technology, so to speak, as one of their founders formerly ran Lockheed Missiles and Space. They provide sustainable and responsible organic farming.

This issue I also wrote about the Byron family, and they mention Kari Byron from the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters enjoys Sunday strolls at the LG Farmers Market, so maybe that is the new place to be. Kari is very talented and quite unique. Grant Atwell shares news of his amazing daughter Hayley Atwell who you might most recently recognize from her role in Captain America. She toggles between continents not only for work, but also to visit family with Mom in London and Dad in Los Gatos. Speaking of family and traveling, you can meet a family within this issue, who took the Travel Advisors of Los Gatos “Calling all Grandparents” advice and instead of a traditional present, took her family on a cruise together. They recommend calling Travel Advisors and doing something similar, as it has bonded them and provided a memory of a lifetime. This is a must read testimonial, and it is considerate of them to share their experience. I couldn’t get over the custom photo book gifted to the family after their cruise with so many pictures of each location visit and historical landmarks and dinners together, as they have officially documented their trip. Travel Advisors really does a fabulous job and they have a heartwarming staff with various expertises to customize your trip with first hand destination experience. Enjoy you family and friends over the holidays and be safe. You will hear from LG Magazine again in 2014 before Valentine’s Day. LG TM

Almaden Lifestyle Magazine Itinerary in Italy, Greece and Turkey gave us the opportunity to do something special and adventuresome. We would come to dinner wearing hats from Greece; the next formal night-celebrating the Patriarch’s 82nd birthday with hats from Turkey. Our last formal night we all wore Venetian Masks from Venice. Our waiters were wonderful. They were especially fond of the younger group. They knew all their names and made each child feel special. The adults chose the Beverage Packages so we always had wonderful wines with our delicious dinners. Celebrity managed to have all 29 of us dining at three separate tables set up together so that we were one large group and could move from table to table if we chose. We felt Celebrity offered a wide range of shore excursions for all ages and included history that all 29 had been exposed to through school or literature. One thing, against the advice of some, we chose to take the Donkey ride to the top of Santorini. Everyone loved it and laughed all the way. No one felt the animals were being mistreated. Of all the shore excursions, most felt Santorini was their favorite. We swam and had a great stop at Elia beach on Mykonos. Perfect for families and a short Celebrity bus ride from the Port. Ephesus was an overwhelming architectural sight filled with so much history. Be sure to wear a hat as the summer is warm. The Celebrity Silhouette has something for everyone-even if someone stays on board. They have an outstanding gym fitted with all of the up to date equipment and classes. Their Solarium pool area is very quiet and relaxing for adults due to an age limit of no one under 16. Sitting on the top deck in the lawn area provided nooks and places for privacy. Many of our group worked on jewelry projects made from stones that they were collecting along the beaches and pathways.

ur family-grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins— all 29 took a Mediterranean Cruise on Celebrity Cruise Line’s Silhouette for ten nights starting July 9, 2013. With the help of Travel Advisors of Los Gatos and Agent Linda Griffin, the journey began, keeping in mind it would take the cooperation of everyone to make this a wonderful trip. We spent 4 pre-cruise days in Rome. The Silhouette left Rome, and we continued on to Athens, Mykonos, Ephesus, Santorini and ended in Venice for a two night stay. Always a concern, with so many and a wide variety of ages, we planned our days in Rome as advenures for those who had never been there. Multigenerational could have been difficult, but everyone embraced the historical sights with excitement, laughter and joy. The 29 of us overwhelmed a Ristorante in Piazza Navona, and they welcomed us with delicious lasagna, pasta bolognese, pizzas and wine- twice. We stayed at Crowne Plaza Hotel, and our rooms included free passes in and out of the old city. It had a lovely pool and grounds for some lazy moments. We would recommend purchasing, on line, your Colosseum and Vatican tickets tickets before arriving as to save waiting in long summer lines. Some of the family have cruised on ships before this cruise. We feel that from the moment we stepped onto the Celebrity Silhouette the entire family was welcomed graciously by all the Silhouette’s staff. One of the most outstanding things happened for our group as we had all our Staterooms with Verandas booked in a row. Never having this happen before, we were delighted to find that the Verandas had sliding partitions that enabled us to open all rooms so that we had one large Veranda. We put name tags on partition so we knew who was in what room. All were able to connect at any time without knocking on doors, calling on phones, etc. Pre-dinner events took place on the long Veranda. It was truly a bonus we will never forget. Traveling with all generations on this ship was like a treasure chest. Each generation brought something special to the ship, and the ship had something special for everyone. The grandchildren danced into the late evenings, and the adults continued after that. The ship gave the grandchildren the opportunity to not be under constant supervision of the adults by having age related activities and vice versa for the adults. The

rant Atwell, a Los Gatos resident for decades, has grown to love the Town and settled into a comfortable lifestyle with a great group of friends and a career he loves, photography (looking forward to his first gallery exhibit) and massage therapy (has been a state certified massage therapist for 20 years). He has many interesting hobbies such as a history in martial arts and dabbling in the graphic arts, but today we focus on his father role and the joy his daughter Hayley brings to him as well as international audiences both watching her perform on stage as well as the silver screen. Grant’s father was a successful American businessman who transferred to London when Grant was a young child, so growing up inter-continentally was a part of life, rather than some exotic adventure most American children only dream of experiencing. When our local high schools receive a European foreign exchange student, they are treated like rock stars. Interestingly, the family tradition ultimately continued. Grant’s father with a flair for the dramatic, built a noticeably splendid home, and was known for expensive taste and expensive cigars. His flamboyant lifestyle made him well known in London, but he ended up moving back to America eventually. Returning to the USA, Grant served as a photographer in the US Navy. That included two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the flagship Aircraft Carrier

USS America and as photographer at the Naval Photo Center Washington, D.C. He returned to London again as an operations engineer at the beginning of the “home video” revolution. He worked providing video support to the BBC, ITV and many London advertising agencies. During this time, he met Barbara Walter, David Bowie, and many others. Grant met his wife Alison while taking a Dale Carnegie course in Effective Speaking and Human Relations. Alison, although quite young, was one of the presenters. It was love at first sight! Soon they were married and living in Notting Hill (yes, like the movie) which was middle class at the time, and now is considered quite posh. This is when he had his lovely daughter Hayley. After life changes and a separation, Grant returned to San Jose spending 6 years as a bay area, high school photographer, and thus began his long distance relationship with his daughter. Grant stayed involved in her life, enjoying summer visits and watched her grow within the acting realm and eventually rise as a star. We sat down together enjoying lunch at Andalé as Grant shared some personal ‘Hayley’ moments. As he looked around, he mentioned he often went there with Hayley when she visits. When I asked if she showed any signs of her future career as a child, he shared her knack for memorizing long scenes perfectly, her intelligence, and he also recalled her uncanny ability to follow him flawlessly when she was young, while he performed his martial arts’ katas.

Almaden Lifestyle Magazine ‘Discovered’ by Woody Allen in 2007 after appearing in lead roles in RoyalLos Gatos Lifestyle Magazine Shakespeare, National Theater London’s West End, television, and radio, Hayley is experiencing increasing success in the U.S. The 8-hour series Pillars of the Earth brought a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a television series, followed by a 3-hour mini series “Restless” with Charlotte Rampling on the Sundance channel. Her lead female role in Captain America, number one in the U.S. Box office in 2011 certainly helped too! She will have a cameo role in the next Captain America, The Winter Soldier next spring and more T.V. productions in the U.S. “I’m proud of Hayley’s success and even more proud of her compassion and focused, diamond sharp attitude that she expresses in a demanding career and personal life! Look out world here comes Hayley! No one gets a straight shot at life so thanks to her Mum for tireless pursuit of raising her so well.” As a therapist Grant tries to remind everyone he meets that “all our children are stars in their own way and every one of us is a unique and precious soul.” Some of Hayley’s series and movie accomplishments include: “The Line of Beauty” (2006), How About You... (2007), Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream (2007), The Duchess (2008), The Prisoner (TV Mini-Series 2009) The Pillars of the Earth (TV Mini-Series 2010) and recently in the mainstream Hollywood hero saga Hayley played the role of British agent Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Sweeney (2012)… I am a big fan and look forward to meeting Hayley during her next visit to Los Gatos, a town she has grown to love while visiting her father, during her next trip in February as she is working on her next movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Can’t wait for that! Might she also play Cinderella’s mother in Cinderella? She certainly graces the screen with her beauty and charm, and amazingly morphs to fit her characters’ profile convincingly to fit any era. She reminds me of Vivian Leigh. I am excited to follow her career, and best of all look forward to seeing her continue to rise as she has already proven her talent, and according to dad, is still just a regular girl without airs. “I gave Hayley what may have been her first “martial arts lesson” when she was age 12 in our London living room. I was a brown belt at the time role modeling (or maybe showing off!). She did the arduous warm up and exercises perfectly, surprising me with her attitude and developed into a great athlete. One year her rugby team placed 4th in the UK. She now follows a strict routine from her Hollywood coaches. In her film roles she does her own stunts dismissing her “stand ins” in order to make a better performance. During the Captain America filming, she had the same personal trainer as Daniel Craig the current James Bond. We both share a natural self-discipline regarding nutrition, and love cooking for family and friends. She currently attends the gym almost daily prior to two daily stage performances in her London theater production of The Pride.” When it was time for college, although Hayley considered Oxford, she attended King’s College (interestingly the Professors there are the authors of the books she would have studied in Oxford) to study philosophy and theology, but interestingly Hayley made a bold move and left there after only 10 days knowing she wanted to be an actor and would find better success elsewhere. She attended Guild Hall of Music and Drama, a 3-year course, and never looked back. She was immersed in live performances, and ultimately was noticed and interviewed in New York by none other than Woody Allen (There is a phone call you don’t get every day!). Grant’s greatest joy in life is the pleasure and happiness he experiences with his daughter he informed me as he shared another story. “Hayley and I hiked Yosemite’s Half Dome when she was 14. In preparation I showed her the map and the guidebook comments. I was trying to warn her of the long journey. ‘She said it’s ok Dad, do you think you can keep up with me?’ Five or so years later we hiked it again running out of batteries the last part of the journey back to Curry Village. We found a 45-year old woman visiting from Asia lost, scared and separated from her family. Rather than comment on my lack of battery preparation, Hayley hiked with her hand on the woman’s shoulder calming her as we walked back in almost total darkness the last 3 miles! Her only comment was, “Lucky we found her. She would have been really bad off; great adventure huh?”

Kari Byron

Who Myths Fear Most by Chrissy Derksen

S

ay hello to Kari Byron, the adorable and feisty, yet creative and inquisitive redheaded co-host of Discovery Channel’s MythBusters. As some of you may know, she grew up in Los Gatos, where her parents Dennis and Sue still call home, and attended Los Gatos High school. On the 11-year running show, Kari (who became a regular in 2003 during season 2 as she rose up from a behind-the-scenes intern status) teams up with Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara as the “build team” and together with Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (who began the show with his M5 Industries workshop) they test the plausibility of various myths. The joy of the show is the mix of personalities all passionate about their personal skills and respectful of each other’s, sharing a love of science as they get to prove or poke fun at particular myths. One that intrigued me (and Kari during her show) was when they proved the motion detector myth valid which is actually a concern for all of us relying on or feeling safe with our alarm systems, as Kari saunters awkwardly through a corridor holding a bed sheet in front of her and manages to not set off the motion alarm as she walks the complete length of the test lab hallway.

An episode I found particularly comical focused on a ‘beer goggle’ myth test, to find out if people become more attractive after consuming alcohol. You can watch a past episode if you want to know the answer – or wear your own GoPro during your next night out. The team synergy is apparent and they make the nutty seem rational as they creatively build props and sets to falsify or confirm a myth. I wondered about her childhood, so I asked mom and dad how she got the ability to weld, hammer, saw, craft and sculpt. When the kids (Kari has a younger sister named Summer) were very young, the family owned the downtown section of a small, historic town of Coulterville from about 1983 to 1987, (oddly only minutes from my Mom’s home so I knew immediately where Dennis was referring too) and quickly realized it wasn’t your average upbringing. When they visited they stayed in a ‘haunted’ hotel with 22 rooms, and Dad, Dennis, made their breakfast each morning in the saloon bar of the hotel. Unlike in the movie Sweet Home Alabama, the bar was closed at the time. This country town filled with history and romantic scenery also attracted quite the clientele. One afternoon Dennis and his assistant at the time Belinda had driven up to Coulterville to do the weekend inventory and collect the money to take back to

the bank in Merced. He put $3,000 on the counter. Quickly Belinda informed him that 11 customers in the bar now saw the money, mentioning that it was dangerous, and she had noticed Dennis’ coat open which gave her a glimpse of the .38 on his hip. Dennis told her the police are 45 minutes away, so yes, people take precautions in that town. To prove his point, Dennis announced, “Everyone with a gun gets a free drink.” Every customer and even his waitress with a tiny pearl-handled gun strapped to her leg hidden under her garb enjoyed their free drink that afternoon – even his contractor performing repairs pulled a semi-automatic out of his tool kit. It was very different from living in the city. Dad taught Kari how to throw knives and fence. This explains a lot, but I also wanted to know if there were times that Kari showed signs she would choose this or a similar career.

spending money inside and left town. Her sister joined herAlmaden in Europe for six Lifestyle Magazine months. In fact, David Letterman, whose son is a Kari fan, brought this up on his show. He enjoyed her recount of a night she was bored with insomnia and couldn’t sleep, so her artistic side kicked in and she began drawing on the walls of a hotel.” When Kari returned to the states, she took a position at an advertising agency and walked off the job knowing a desk job wasn’t for her, prior to visiting M5 and pursuing an internship, and ultimately becoming an official artist, star and household name. Kari, her husband Paul and child live in San Francisco which is cold in the summer, so she comes to LG to warm up (and maybe just to see family) early

When Kari was about 6 (Mom, Sue constantly corrected Dennis with ages and dates in a lighthearted and loving manner) her parents found her lining their laundry chute with pillows. She was dropping her doll Juju down the chute and when asked what she was doing, she replied, “I am seeing if the chute is safe enough to drop Summer down.” During elementary school Kari was involved in cheerleading with Pop Warner football and she was a flag girl in high school, which may have attributed to her lack of shyness and ability to perform. Interestingly, in high school, per mom, Kari wanted a video camera, rather than a car, so she could make and film clay-mations. “She was always involved with some type of special effects…” they reminisced, and she was also driven. When she was at San Francisco State, she studied film arts and graduated 4.3 magna cum laude, and she knew at that time wanted to get into special effects, but first she went on a “year-long, worldwide hike” according to Dad. “She showed kids how to brush their teeth in Egypt. In Thailand she ate a grasshopper, to experience the local customs. If they ate crickets she did, rice, she did... In Egypt, she ran into a mother and daughter and they made her a bowl of rice. She found out it was their complete ration for the week, so the next day she left them a book with all her

Sunday morning or Saturday night about once a month, and they eat huevos rancheros at the farmer’s market and let the kid run in the fountains. Lately she has been traveling a lot. She was in Russia for 4 days. She said her bodyguard was the size of a truck… Dennis and Sue shared many more fun stories about Kari, such as Kari installing hooker headers on his Heritage Springer Harley Davidson with fishtail pipes, when the crossover pipe cracked. He asks, “How many girls can do that?” Sorry men, she is taken, but perhaps she is a trendsetter. The pride and love among Kari’s parents was overflowing, and we closed with a corky story about Kari’s wedding with her wearing thug wife tennis shoes under her beautiful gown, and her request for Dad to wear a red accented zoot suit and fedora. What a fun family! LG
