CHOOSING BUCKLES BY HYO SILVER With so many options to choose from, we here at Hyo Silver want to share a few helpful hints that will ensure your members are awarded with a Champion buckle that they are proud to wear! We’ve also found that choosing a small to medium sized buckle shape with unique, detailed borders allows you to provide your members with both functionality and style. Choosing different buckle shapes for the 1st Go Champions and All Arounds is a great way to differentiate between the achievements, while still awarding each member with a top quality buckle. When working with a buckle company, be sure to ask the representative for suggestions on different buckle shapes to help separate the categories of competition. Buckle shapes that include an inner outline shape allow for combinations of a Retro and a Black Antique or Silver background. Using a combination of stone colors has also been gaining popularity as a way to add classy color combinations to the buckles. Try using combinations such as crystal clear accent stones with blue turquoise stones in the edge of the buckle to add a pop of color. Another great way to make your awards stand out is to add your region logo or other unique graphics to the buckle design. Not only will this add a unique element to the buckle, but it will also serve as a reminder of all the great memories the member had while competing to win the buckle. When a rodeo association spends approximately $20,000 on trophy saddles alone, it is serious business. Awards committee members lose sleep over their decisions trying to make all contestants and their parents happy. They go cross-eyed looking at bid after bid that appears to be written in a foreign language of breed this and combo-tooled that. To say it is overwhelming is quite the understatement. How do you make a decision? Everybody has an opinion about tooling, seat colors, price points, skirt styles, and tree fits, and none of them appear to jive with one single bid option you have in front of you. It is enough to make a sane person crazy all day every day! SADDLE STRUCTURE The bare bones of a saddle, known as the tree, have two extremely important components to consider when choosing a trophy saddle provider: FIT and STRENGTH. Each rodeo event has a different “style” of horse that works best. There is no “one size fits all” saddle tree. The bottom of the tree is designed to fit the horse, and the top of the tree is designed to fit the rider. A barrel horse and a team roping horse are not always built the same. You can say the same for the competitors of the events. We set up Tie-Down Ropers to get to the front and get off quickly and our Team Roping saddles are designed to be able to rope,

When selecting a trophy saddle provider, you want to choose a company that knows the ins and outs of what works and has trees designed to meet the specific needs of each event. In regard to saddle tree strength, you want to ask what the tree warranty is on the saddles being bid. Slone Saddles come with 10 Year Tree Warranties. When making a selection, red flags should be waved for any saddle with less than a seven year tree warranty. You also should be skeptical and ask for a definition when told a saddle tree has a “Life-Time Warranty.” We trust the FIT and STRENGTH of our trees more than any of our competitors. They are BUILT TO RIDE and not to sit in a living room, because we believe the amount of money associations spend on trophy saddles is the best advertising you do for your association. You want to see them in the arena and not locked up in a barn or living room! SADDLE STYLE This is the fun part and should definitely carry weight in your trophy saddle decision process. You want your trophy saddles to stand out in the arena; after all, this is a marketing expense as well as a prize! It can attract or deter future contestants. Use it to your advantage. Saddle design options are endless. There are hundreds of combinations of skirt styles, tooling patterns, seat colors and prints, conchos, spots, buck-stitching. The list goes on and on.
Here is what you need to know. Choose a saddle provider that is willing to work with your association to get the design you want that fits within your budget! This is an important note; all of these options have a cost associated with them because they take time and materials. Figure out what is important to your contestants. Would they rather have more floral tooling or an exotic print seat? Do they want a ranch-style look or is your region a little on the wild side? Find out! We have more experience in saddle design that anyone else in the industry. We turn in saddle bids that are unique to your association, but if there is a “must-have” that is not on the bid, ask for it! The saddle bid that is turned in to your region is just a “first shot”. The best advice is to have an open dialogue about price, design, and the wants and needs of your region! We work hard to make your saddle dreams a reality! SADDLE PRICE Saddle price is extremely important when selecting a trophy saddle provider. You want the most “bang for your buck!” You want the highest quality and best designed saddle you can get, which we know we have! The days of the $900 are over, and if you receive a bid in this price range, you need to question the aforementioned areas before making a selection.

This is the first buckle I won in Junior High / High School Rodeo. I worked hard for this buckle and wore it every day for about two years after that until I decided to retire it. It’s in my buckle case now, right in with everything else that I’ve won over the years. Sometimes I go shuffle through them to maybe switch one off my belt or something and every time I see that old buckle I smile. I smile because seeing that buckle reminds me of not only the awards ceremony, but of the life long friends I made during that first year. EXCITING CHANGES FOR REGION I

s we get close to kicking off out 2021-2022 rodeo semester, there has been some changes within region one. I would first like to inform you that we have a new secretary. Her name is Marcy Sessions and we are so excited to have her! I would also like to recognize all of the region one members that made it to nationals. All the competitors from region one worked hard all year long to qualify to state. After making it to state, they worked even harder to get a chance to compete at the National finals. Gus Galliard did an exceptional job at state and then had a really good ride in the first round at nationals. Sometimes, in rodeo, things don’t go our way and Gus had one of those days in the sec-
ond round. Gus has redeemed himself at some rodeos this summer. Braxton Hughes, and John Hisel worked hard on making it to Nationals, but unfortunately it didn’t go their way. All the region one members are excited and ready for this upcoming year. We had a big change this year with a new secretary. We are all so grateful GUS GALLIARD that Marcy Sessions photo by Acentric Rodeo is coming to region one to help put on the rodeos. She will be doing a lot for the kids of region one and helping the board a tremendous amount. There is no way we could have the great region one rodeos without the help of Marcy and the rest of the board. A few things that are a little different from the past years in region one. We are having both Jr High and High school runs at the same time. We did this last year, but it is still fairly new to some people. Running the region one rodeos like this will ensure that there is enough time in between events for all the competitors to change saddles, switch horses, ect. ith a passion to continually improve the Texas High School and Junior High Rodeo Association, Bloomer Trailers, Inc. has committed for the 12th year in a row to be sponsor THSRA/TJHRA. This announcement launches the Bloomer Trailer Giveaway Program, which raises funds by members receiving $50 donations from donors for a chance to win the Bloomer Two-Horse Trailer valued at $39,827. The trailer will be given away at the 2022 state finals in June. The Bloomer sponsorship raised an impressive $263,350 during the 2020-2021 rodeo season. This year it is estimated that Bloomer Trailers will hit another milestone, officially becoming a $2 million dollar sponsor over the course of their 12-year relationship with THSRA/TJHRA. region II: #tougherthanever

s the Summer rodeo season comes to a close, Region II competitors get ready for a full fall season of Region rodeos. Region II will start back the 2021-2022 rodeo season August 28-29 in San Angelo, Texas. The first rodeo is followed by 3 more rodeos within the next 60 days. This schedule mixed with first weeks back to school will make for a busy fall. Region II graduated a lot of Seniors this past year but the lower classmen showed they were just as worth at Nationals. Team Texas (as a whole) dominated the competition at Nationals with an impressive of 7
out of 13 event wins. The TJHRA also dominated at nationals. Team Texas surged above the rest and by 3000 points took the championship. The state of Texas has the toughest Jr Rodeo competitors of anywhere in the U.S. This is proven every year at Nationals by taking the Team Championship for the past 8, yes 8, years. In.a.row. Region II has some members that homeschool, some private school, and some public school. As high school rodeo athletes we will juggle our time between practice in the arena, practice on the football field, cross country, cheerleading, and more, but we will make it work and as always be #tougherthanever.

incoln, NE- In front of a rodeo loving crowd at the Lancaster Event Center, teens from the grades 9-12 globe wide competed for the opportunity to be crowned the National High School 2021 Champion. This event started July 18th, 2021 and ended July 24th, 2021. It included contestants from over 37 states and four countries. This is one of the biggest stages on the junior level that saw over 1,500 entries in the various events this year. Tyge Flowers, also known as TW is a 17 year old bronc rider from Old Glory, Texas. TW is the newly crowned 2021 National High School Saddle Bronc Champion. I had the privilege to speak to TW about his rodeo experience and current success. TW said, " I would like to give thanks to his parents,Wendy and Jay Flowers, and sister, Jaylee Flowers, for helping me along the way to become the saddle bronc rider I am today." He was also asked about how he got to where he is today. "I contribute my success at riding broncs to Jim Blane Kenny. He helped him when I rode steers, and then Cody Grove and Mark Owen when I transitioned to riding Saddle Broncs. TW was able to gain some momentum and confidence at the National Little Britches Finals in Guthrie, Ok before the National High School Finals, where he finished as reserve champion. While at the Finals, TW scored a 227 total that eventually secured him his spot as 2021 National High School Saddle Bronc Champion. TW stated that National High School Finals was an awesome experience, “I’ve never been to a high school rodeo with such an amazing crowd, and the stock was even and pretty rank”. When Tyge turns 18, he wants start rodeoing the UPRA, circuit. He dreams of making the NFR in Las Vegas.
There were other “Top Hand” competitors representing Region 3 at the National High School Finals. In the Saddle Bronc, Jase Stout (Decatur, Tx) finished in 24th spot with 67 points. In the Barrel Racing Jada Trosper (Ponder, Tx) finished 31st in the barrels with a total time of 36.22. After winning Region and State she fell short of making it back to the short go. This was definitely not how she wanted to end her 2021 High school run. In the Boys Cutting three of four people sent to Nationals were from region 3. Russel Bushawn (Weatherford, Tx) finished 3rd with 429 points, followed by Payden Rust (Gordon, Tx) who was 4th with 428.5 points, and Jake Shelton (Krum, Tx) tied for 6th with 427 points. In the Bull Riding John Crimber (Decatur, Tx) is our official “Triple Crown" winner. John was our Region, State, and National Champion. John secured the Bull Riding crown at Nationals with a total score of 173.5 after coming back number one in the short go round. He ended his 2021 high school run the dream way, and not many rodeo athletes can say that they did that in their career. In Girls Cutting, Jade Mitchell (Weatherford, Tx) after barely going to state from regions in the 7th spot and finishing in the top four to make nationals was 432 and finished 6th. Lizzy Webb (Grandview, Tx) was the reserve region champion and made the top four 25th with 18.61 on two in the Goat Tying. In the Pole Bending, Rylee Hardin (Newcastle, Tx) finished 4th in regions making top four at state headed to nationals with high hopes and was 61.207 and finished 4th. Reining Cow Horse Emily Kent (Jacksboro, Tx) who won regions was 13th with 860.5 and Madeline Horton (Fort Worth, Tx) finished 4th at regions was 18th with a score of 566. TW Flowers (Old Glory, Tx) region reserve champion made State and then won Nationals in the Saddle Bronc with 227, and Jase Stout (Decatur, Tx) winning regions followed up finishing 24th with 67 points. The Texas' girls and boys both won nationals; overall Texas was the national champion against all other states and countries. Region lll sent 12 representatives to compete at Nationals; all competitors represented Region III well and made us proud.

i my name is Lulu Eakes, and I am your 2021-2022 Region IV Ariat reporter. I have been a part of Region IV for 5 years, 2 of those being your Ariat news reporter. My favorite memory about Region IV is getting to see all of my friends together supporting one another in friendly competition despite all of the chaos in the world. I compete in barrels and poles at Region IV. When I graduate highschool in 2024, I would like to work towards my degree to become a Texas State Game Warden. A horse that I feel took me to another level has to be my old man King. King was my first true barrel horse. He really taught me how to step up my game and helped push me to be the rider I am today. As your Region IV reporter I plan to interview each of the seniors, and get their take on high school rodeo. I hope to show a little glimpse of our beloved Region IV through these articles. Let’s get to know our new Region IV secretary! Mrs. Kathy Johnson lives in Pickton, Texas with her husband of forty years. Mrs. Johnson and her husband have three kids and rodeo
is a family lifestyle. Even though Mr. and Mrs Johnson didn't rodeo in college each of their kids still competed in THSRA. Mrs Johnson's grandkids also rodeo. Levi and Cash are competing this year at Region IV in the Junior High division. Tristian, Kreece, True, and Alicie Joan have taken after their family and have started junior rodeos. Mrs. Johnson isn't exactly sure why she accepted the position of secretary. Being the secretary of the Four States High School Rodeo, getting to see all the smiling kids and their parents doing the sport they love, and her kids rodeoing at Region IV it seemed fitting to accept the position. Mrs Johnson might not have rodeoed, but she is quite the hand. She loves getting out and helping her kids, whether it is holding a goat, popping the chute, or even driving a trailer, she is always up for an adventure. As if three kids, six grandkids, and her new found love of sewing on top of being the Region rodeo secretary doesn’t keep her busy enough, she also runs an amazing embroidery and screen-printing business with her daughter. Mrs. Johnson does her best to make sure each contestant is taken care of, and works diligently with our state office to make sure that Region IV is run smoothly. We look forward to having Mrs. Johnson with us at Region IV.

s summer comes to an end, we are grateful to look back on the memories that were made for the summer of 2021. So many events were canceled for Summer 2020, we were thrilled to see the normalcy of this summer. What is 3410.83?? That is the point difference from Nationals that Team Texas left the week with. Congratulations Texas! As we all face our “Back to School” start dates, we also face
scheduling conflicts with our equine rodeo team. Since many of us are also in sports, after school practices mean later homework slots and ultimately later practice times at the rodeo pen. Academic success is important to us since good grades can lead to more scholarships. Prioritizing our education is something we learn at an early age. Getting accepted is one thing; receiving a scholarship is another matter entirely! Better grades, higher test scores, and involvement in a variety of activities tests your discipline and time management skills. The GPA you need to get a full ride scholarship varies from college to college. Admission offices pay attention to involvement in school and community activities as well as GPA. This is the time of year that college rodeo teams start looking at the next prospects. Most are looking for the whole package, a gritty contestant in the rodeo pen and an intellectual mind in the classroom. So freshman, listen up! Make sure your work in the classroom is just as important as your work in the practice pen. Deadlines are approaching for the 2021/2022 new year. Be sure and check your region dates and get your forms in. Looking forward to a region scholarship? Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer …make yourself known! Study up on the rules and make it happen for yourself!

PERFORMANCE REPORT 40 Years in the Making

hat can we say about someone who wins the first, second, and short round at State in cutting, wins State, wins the first and second round at Nationals, and wins Nationals? We can say she is our very own Faith Farris, Region 6 State and National Cutting Champ! This accomplishment for Faith’s family has been in the making for 40 years. Faith Farris is the 17-yearold daughter of Mitch and Tracy Farris from Midway, Texas and is a senior in high school this year. Faith grew up in a cutting horse family. Her father is a cutting horse trainer who won State when he was in high school. Faith’s mother showed cutters, reining, and cow horses. Faith has one brother, Kyle Farris, who is 10 years older than her. He was involved in cutting in high school. In fact, Kyle won State one year and won reserve at Nationals. Faith explained she practically began riding when she was in diapers!!! She began cutting at home at the age of 3 then began showing at the age of 7. Faith’s passion for cutting began at the age of 11. The surprise factor is what
intrigues Faith about cutting. In fact, she almost finds the sport addicting. She explains how every performance is never the same with so many variables involved. Faith goes on to share how there is always room for improvement and “not knowing the Lord’s plan brings me FAITH FARRIS comfort to continue working at my passion.” The excitement of a performance gives her an adrenaline rush that puts a smile on her face. Faith prepared for Nationals by utilizing an “it is what it is” mindset. She continued a normal work routine and found comfort in the thought that “the Lord had already decided my fate.” Faith continues “I was blessed to be there in the first place and even more so blessed that He allowed this dream to come true.” Region 6 attracted Faith because it is the location of some of her biggest National Cutting Horse Association shows. This year she rode Big Shoes To Phil, who is an 8-year-old High Brow Cat out of Ta pt Twice. Staying positive is one of the biggest challenges for Faith in cutting. According to Faith, this sport can be discouraging but she keeps her faith in God and stays determined. In addition to determination, she faces challenges by staying grounded. Faith believes “a want to” kind of attitude makes a difference. A person who feels like they are doing something because they have to will not excel. Faith believes working hard to achieve goals and dreams makes success mean so much more. Overwhelming indescribable emotions is how Faith explained winning Nationals. She thanks the Lord, her parents, her friends, and her show help for their support. Faith’s future goals include going to cosmetology school and next to Sam Houston State University topursue a business degree. She hopes to be come a professional Non-Pro in the National Cutting Horse Association. Faith recommends to those who have an interest in cutting to never give up on the sport because it is the most humbling and rewarding thing a person can ever do. FAITH FARRIS

egion VII couldn’t have been more proud of their fellow members on how well they performed during the NHSFR and NJHSFR. The High school team showed their hard work throughout the week and helped their fellow Texas team members to win another boys and girls individual team
titles and put themselves in the record books for the first state to win Nationals six times in a row. At the high school finals, Madison Outhier placed first in the 1st go round in the breakaway roping with a 1.92. Even after a long road of traveling to some of the pro rodeos, she still managed to come and support her Texas team. Colin Fox showed his amazing athleticism in the steer wrestling as he won the 1st go round with a 3.94. Jayci Byler also contributed some points to the Texas team by placing 7th in the 1st go round with a 17.8. At the junior high national finals, Kinley Shook and Holden Weaver placed 8th in the 1st round with a 8.6. Kami Klepac sweeps it up in the barrel racing, becoming the NJHSF Champion in the barrel racing. Team Texas finished the year off by winning the boys team, girls team, and overall team titles for high school and junior high. Congratulations to our fellow members for their hard work and winnings during the National finals. We are so proud of each and every one of you. s summer comes to an end, so does the 2020-2021 rodeo season, marked by the end of National Finals in July. After a hard-fought battle, Texas took home another win, for a total of a record breaking 6 championship titles in a row. and welcome in newcomers from across the state. Thanks to region president Tom Aasbo, last year saw many new additions to our region, including a jumbo screen to view runs and advertise sponsors, and a timer which displays contestants times for the audience. The ability to livestream Region VIII rodeos from anywhere on your mobile device was also added last year, and will continue to be in use this season. The region also has free sponsored clinics, last year we had Reined Cow Horse and Goat Tying clinics, that are available to the rodeo contestants at select rodeos. And as a finally way to end our rodeo season in 2021, Granger Smith came and put on a concert for the contestants and their families, free of charge. I am excited to see what free, fun events our region offers us contestants this year. One of the many things that separates Region VIII from other regions is our contestant led church service. At 8:00 AM, before our Sunday rodeos, students and their families gather around to hear what their peers have to say about the Word of God. Both junior high and high school students participate, starting with a high school boy and a junior high girl who each prepare a service to share with everyone. Before the next rodeo, the high school boy must ask a high school girl to do the next service, and the junior high girl must ask a junior high boy. So it continues back and forth at each rodeo. At our banquet at the end of the year, Chico Hines, who helped get the church service where it is today, picks one person to deliver the service at our awards banquet in front of the entire region. Good job this year THSRA contestants, and good luck in the upcoming season. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,” Colossians 3:23.

“Qualifying for Nationals was a goal I set for myself this year,” Lane said, when asked how he felt about being a National Qualifier. “It was exciting to become state champion and an honor to represent Texas at Nationals.” After asking if he’d gone to any other shoots between State and Nationals, he said, “Trap competitions are not really available where I live. Actually, Nationals was only the fifth time I’d ever competed in trap. So, I just kept up the good practice schedule prior to Nationals to stay sharp.” As for the rest of Region VIII, we hope to continue to make great changes to our region,

hile the summer rodeos may be coming to an end, the good news is that THSRA Region 9’s rodeos are going to be here before you know it. Mark the dates, October 16-17 at the Burleson County Saddle Club arena is where we will kick off the ‘21-‘22 rodeo season. Thrilled would be an understatement when describing the feeling of starting a new season, due to the fact that the competitors in this region are rich in talent. With that being said, let’s take a minute to brag on our Region 9 kiddos for how exceptional they did at one of the biggest summer rodeos, the National High School Finals Rodeo. Seven of our very own athletes made the long haul to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete for a national title. Comically, we were originally only sending six; I got a call a week before the finals letting me know that since I had finished 5th in the breakaway and someone drew out, that I was getting to go to the finals in the number 4 spot. I was so grateful to have the opportunity to represent Team Texas as well as Region 9 at my 3rd National Finals. I had an extremely blessed week and ended up 4th in the short go, but more importantly 4th in the world; not too
bad considering I was not even supposed to be there. However, I was not the only one to bring home some hardware. In fact, all seven of us made the short go (top 20), tie-down ropers Koby Douch and Tyler Calhoun finished 13th and 3rd, goat tyer Brooklyn Balch (NHSFR second round JAKE STARNS champion) and bareback rider Bradlee photo by Acentric Rodeo Miller both finished 10th, and we had two of our members completely demolish the competition and bring home world championships. Kiley Hargrave-Batten (THSRA State Champion) and Socks (the fastest pony in the world) lived up to their labels at the finals in the pole bending. This tiny but mighty duo won the first round, 4th in the KILEY HARGRAVE-BATTEN second round, and came into the short go in photo by Acentric Rodeo the number two spot. The pressure was on during her final run; she stayed calm, cool and collected in order to accomplish her goal. On the contrary, after her final run, there was no hiding the excitement and relief on Hargrave-Batten’s face when she realized she had just won an NHSRA world title with an outstanding time of 60.718 on three runs. Along with the pole bending championship, Jake Starns brought home the gold in the boy’s cutting. The senior team roper and cutter went out of his high school rodeo career with a bang. He and his equine partner marked a total of 436 points allowing him to finish four points ahead of second place. Along with the world title, Starns also won 5th in the first round and 1st in the second round. Without a doubt, the athletes of Region 9 contributed a generous amount of the 14,538.33 points towards the All-Around team competition. With great honor, I am happy to say that the seven kids from Region 9 had a lot to do with Team Texas winning their 6th consecutive NHSFR All-Around Team world title. Not only is this accomplishment great in itself, but this win made history and broke the record for most consecutive All-Around world titles won. Along with the All-Around title, Texas won the Girls’ and Boys’ Team world titles as well. Can you say clean sweep? Best of luck to all ten regions across the state as they begin a new season. We can’t wait to catch y’all in Abilene for the THSRA State Finals where I am expecting Region 9 to dominate once again. Safe travels and God bless.

ongratulations, to the Richard's Family, the McCoy's Farm and Ranch Family of the Month! Joe Richards and his wife Brandi and two daughters, Madalyn and Lucy are Region 2 members. The Richards have owned and operated the Diamond Cattle Feeders for twenty years in Hereford, Texas. The family-owned enterprise is a 17,000 head custom feedyard located in the heart of cattle feeding country, specializing in the best customer service from “the buy”, risk management to “the sell”, said Joe, "We believe in putting our customers and their cattle first, and we also help our customers maximize their particular position." Brandi is employed as an animal health sales representative for Boehringer Ingelheim, and she calls on feed yards and veterinarians in the panhandle. Her expertise is not only valuable in her outside employment; but is also utilized in the Richard's family-owned business as well. Their eldest daughter, Madalyn is a nineteen year old freshman at Texas A&M University studying engineering. She was the 2020 NHSRA World Champion Goat Tyer and the 2019 Texas State Champion Goat Tyer. Her sister Lucy is fifteen years old, and is a sophomore at Vega High School. She was the 2021 THSRA Rookie of the Year and a 2021 National qualifier in goat tying. Joe and Brandi shared that they love watching their girls compete in whatever sport they're involved in, whether it be playing basketball, roping, goat tying, breakaway, barrels or pole bending, or just playing a game of tiddly winks at home. The whole family cherishes their time in the truck hauling to rodeos, along with their time spent with family and friends on the rodeo trail. This family works together to make their family business successful through various means, including utilizing a custom calendar and advanced planning, which is vital to their success as a family business. Brandi and her daughters try to take care of everything at home from the horses to cattle, and Joe takes care of the feedyard. Madalyn and

Lucy are also depended upon as back-up help at the feedyard, doing anything they are told from riding pens to shipping and receiving cattle. But, speaking from a mother's heart, Brandi says, "The girls will do whatever we need, but it's not always willingly!" However, Madalyn and Lucy have been trained do anything around the yard from weighing silage trucks to cleaning water tanks. They are also called upon to check on outside cattle as well as feeding and putting out mineral. The women in this family are definitely multi-taskers and also help out in the office answering phones or inputting daily work. Brandi's quips, "About the only thing the females in this family don't do, is carry off dead skunks, that is Joe's job regardless!" Brandi further shared that the most important traits that Madalyn and Lucy have learned from their involvement at Diamond Cattle Feeders and at the ranch, is perseverance, communication and the value of our employees. Brandi elaborated on the fact, that the feedyard never stops. Their statistics consists of 34,000 of feeder cattle in a one year feedyard turn. From day to day we are busy buying cattle, selling cattle, hedging, feeding and caring for the cattle, as well as mixing feed, buying feed ingredients, making rations, and doing yard maintenance, as well as placing and caring for outside cattle on grass, as well as raising wheat and sorghum silage. Plus the cattle must be fed three times a day every single day and it takes more than just our family to get the job done. "Many of our employees from the pen riders to the feedtruck drivers have worked with us every day since we started", said Brandi , "This type of loyalty is a testament to how much our employees are valued and respected, which is one of the most important traits our girls can learn and carry with them through out their lifetime." The Richard's chose this lifestyle instead of the typical 8 to 5 job because Joe and Brandi were both raised on ranches. Brandi was raised in Northeastern New Mexico outside of Raton. Joe’s family has ranches outside of Fairfield, Texas, where his family had also owned Buffalo Livestock for many years. "Livestock and agriculture
is what we knew and where our network was so it only made since that we ended up here toghether," exclaimed Brandi. "Involvement in THSRA has further shaped our lives and has made the girls value their time and the power of setting goals and structuring a framework to achieve those goals," said Brandi, "Practice and getting ready for THSRA rodeos happens every day at our ranch, along with organizing our schedules and prioritizing our family time, in order to insure that the girls are able to get their horses exercised, calves roped, goats tied, homework completed, and basketball or track practice done, which to say the least is a constant juggle in our household." The Richard's further shared some of their thoughts on the commercialization of the farm and ranch industry, by explaining that commercialization is the process of managing or running something principally for financial gain and added, "We love the cattle business and are grateful for the life lessons and opportunities it provides us. Afterall, what other industry allows you to take your kids with you to work everyday, and pass down generations of memories or experiences from the front seat of a pickup truck?" However, to be able to continue to run their business efficiently and do all they possibly can to conserve their valuable resources, they elaborated on the fact that "Even though, we are a family business, that does not mean that we can use a big chief tablet and pencil to do
our financials, because agriculture is big business weather you are a small farm or a large corporate entity." "The idea that this way of life may sound romantic to many, the truth is at the end of the day, we all have to pay our bills and entry fees. We are surrounded by other family owned feed yards, farms and ranches, as many of our friends in THSRA are as well. It is our business and goal to continue feeding a growing population and we can’t do that unless we embrace technology, along with the best practices, and utilize our resources efficiently and conservatively," said Joe. The Richard family feels very honored to be selected as this month's McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family. Although, there is no McCoy's in close proximity, they make it a point to shop there as much as possible for many of their needs such as feedyard maintenance, water tanks reconstruction, building of pens both at the feedyard and on the ranch, and other items which they need to help them run their ranch and feedyard more efficiently. "We have seen how committed McCoy’s is to THSRA and it is that kind of commitment and loyalty that we respect and hope that we reflect in our own lives, said Brandi, "We are also grateful to THSRA for providing an incredible opportunity to compete against the very best high school rodeo athletes in the world."

A NEW SEASON IS UPON US

s the sunsets on summer, a new season is upon us. For some it is the end of their high school career, for others it is the beginning of theirs. Two of our Region 10 members got to finish their high school careers on a high note in Nebraska. Katy Webb said her experience at Nationals was a great one and noted the friendly people of Nebraska helped make it more so! Katy and her 14 year
old registered Quarter Horse, Ruby finished 3rd in the average in the pole bending. This is especially special to Katy as she trained Ruby. She excited to be continuing her rodeo career for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, on a rodeo scholarship, majoring in Business. Katy said what she will miss most about Region 10 is Mrs. Stephanie, friends, and the tough competition. Trevor Hale left his KATY WEBB name in the record books in photo by Acentric Rodeo Nebraska as the sun set on his high school career. He collected his THIRD Reining Cow Horse AND All-Around Cowboy titles at nationals! He did so competing on two different, obviously amazing, Reining Cow Horses over his 3 year reign and the same tiedown horse. He gave credit to great horse power and many great influences in his life to help him have the success he has had on such a high level. Trevor chose Cisco Junior College for the programs fit for him. He is on a rodeo scholarship competing in tiedown and team roping for them. He said he will miss Region 10’s good quality rodeos that he felt prepared him for tough competition. He would like everyone in the region and on the THSRA board for making things happen.
As their sun sets……the sun rises for two current members. One such member is Region 10 President, Makenzie Dowell. Makenzie is a 12th grader at Christian Academy of America and is excited about her leadership role in the coming year. Her favorite event is breakaway roping and admits to be a little on the superstitious side with her rodeo preparations. She chose Region 10 because of the tough competition which helps her to level up. She loves that we have a good board that works hard to give back to the kids with a great stock contractor and great payout. Makenzie’s sidekick this past year was Avery Foegelle, who served as the Region 10 Vice President. She is a 10th grader at White Horse Christian Academy. She competes in Team Roping and Breakaway, but admits Team Roping is her favorite event. When not rodeoing, she loves to fish. She came to Region 10 for the strong competition and big family atmosphere. We cannot be more excited about the new season! The thrill of the sunrise will be hard to control come September 18th19th. SEAVER RICHTON SENTER OF REGION II by Ava Anderson

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!
ongratulations to Seaver Richton Senter, this month's WHATAKID!" He is sixteen years old and a junior at Ropes High School. Seaver is a member of THSRA Region 2, and resides in his hometown of Ropesville, Texas. Some of his most memorable takeaways from being a member of THSRA organization are his achievements and the life-long friendships forged. In addition, to his rodeo awards and achievements, Senter has an impressive list of school awards and other distinguishments. Seaver takes his academic achievements very seriously, and which includes being honored with the Summa cum laude award (the highest honor awarded to students with the highest GPA). His favorite subject is Algebra II, and Seaver quipped, "It's my favorite class because Mrs. Caffey teaches our class and she is really fun!" Seaver's extracurricular activities not only includes the sport of rodeo, but he somehow finds time to play on his school's basketball team. He has also been active in FFA, and in the Future Business Leaders of America, and has further served as a wool judge in FFA. Now that school is back in session, Seaver shared that his typical day starts at home around 7:00 AM, but he likes to arrive at school to "socialize a little bit before class" that starts at 8:00 AM. In the afternoons after school he

grabs a snack and then heads straight to the barn to rope. Senter recalls going to rodeos in the third grade and furher reminisces about growing up in a long-line of rodeo contenders. Seaver is a competitor in breakaway roping, goat tying, steer breakaway, steer stopping and team roping. He has competed at HPJRA, Region 2 THSRA, as well as in AJRA rodeos and various jackpots. Throughout his extensive rodeo career, Seaver has qualified for HPJRA –13-15 Champion Heeler; AJRA – 13-15 Champion Heeler - Year End and Finals; and AJRA – 16-19 Champion Heeler - Year End and Finals. He was also a TJHRA – State Qualifier; and a THSRA – State Qualifier; as well as Junior NFR Qualifier. Senter likes to give honor where honor is due and said, "My partner is an awesome horse named Bart, and he is a twelve-year-old bay with a very thick mane and tail." Seaver went on to fondly share, "My favorite memory of Bart is when I tickled the end of his nose and he smiled back at me." Seaver recalls that when his former horse started to get older he was forced to look around for another good horse and explained, "Whenever I would hear of a horse that I thought might work, my family and I would go try out the horse to see if I could get along with it; and although, I had gotten on a few good horses, I finally decided Bart was the one I wanted to be my heel horse, and he has served me well in my current rodeo career!" Rodeo practice and animal care takes up a lot of his time, which Seaver says, "It's not really any sacrifice, but I do believe when it is time to step up to a different horse again, I will definitely have to make some sacrifices, but I believe in the long run, it'll made me a better roper." This aspiring roper gets his inspiration from Wesley Thorp, and said, “I consider Wesley to be my roping hero because is a good roping teacher and a really good person.” Seaver's future plans include attending Texas Tech University and majoring in an agricultural field. Another goal of his is to be on the college rodeo team because he said, "My grandfather was on the Tech rodeo team, so was my dad, and at this current time my twin brother and sister are also on the Tech rodeo teams, and I would like to continue in this family tradition." When asked what his motto in life is, Seaver said, “My motto is: Live life to the fullest!" After graduation from college, one of his life-long dreams is to one-day travel to Equador because in his own words, "It is a beautiful country that I would like to explore." This accomplished cowboy feels extremely honored to be selected as Region 2's Whatakid, and Seaver would like to thank everyone for this special honor. THSRA and Whataburger would like to wish all the best to Seaver during this current rodeo season, and in his future endeavors!

ello, I am Quay Lloyd, your 2021-2022 THSRA State President. I reside on a ranch south of Maryneal, Texas and attend Highland High School. I am an eighteen year old, senior class vice-president, who takes dual credit classes, competes in football, basketball, track, robotics, and FFA. This year in THSRA, I will compete in calf roping, steer wrestling and saddle bronc riding for Region 10. I am honored to serve as your president and excited to have the opportunity to grow the sport of rodeo, promote the athletes and stock along with celebrating the legacy of rodeo through sponsorships. Our world needs to see how the young men and women of rodeo are passionate about our sport and strive to display the talents and character that reflect the values our nation desperately needs at this time. I would like to be the first to wish you luck this season and safe travels down the road. I’ll see you at the next one.

JUNIOR HIGH
Region I at the national Junior high finals!
W
e had two Region 1 junior high members place in the top 10 at the National Junior High Finals this year, Jaxon Stoker and Flint Hill. We caught up with Region I Junior High Member, Jaxon Stoker, about his experience qualifying and competing at Nationals in the saddle bronc steers and team roping (with partner Ryan Timberlake). “My favorite part of nationals was hanging out and going up against all levels of talent across the country. I also enjoyed meeting new people and building friendships,” said Stoker. While he didn't have the luck he had hoped for in the team roping, he said that he had a great experience with his partner. The saddle bronc steer riding was one of the most competitive in recent years with all top 20 qualifying on 2 rides (versus just one in the past). Even with the tough competition, Jaxon successfully placed third in the 2nd round and fellow Region I member, Flint Hill placed 4th in the short round. Both capped the year with top 10 placing in the average; Jaxon ended up 7th and Flint 9th in the world. Congratulations to both of you and good luck in this next rodeo season.

M
y name is Avery Armstrong. I live on a ranch in Borger, Texas. I am in the 8th grade and attend a small Middle School where I enjoy basketball and track. I am also involved in my church youth group. On the ranch, my favorite things to do are work cows with my dad, ride my horses, or practice for my next rodeo. I compete in the breakaway, team roping, goat tying, and ribbon running. This year I am going to add barrels and poles since it’s my last year in Junior High Rodeo. I have many different horses and have learned so much from each of them. My head horse, Manny, is one of my favorites because he has taught me more about roping than any other horse. Rodeo truly is my favorite sport and I love other things about it besides just the competition. I have met some of my best friends in the arena who turned from competition into family over the years. My rodeo family is always there for me when I need them the most. During my time in the TJHRA, I have been lucky enough to rodeo in both Region 1 and Region 2. This has allowed me to compete in different towns, arenas, and against many tough kids. The competition has pushed me to improve in all of my events. I had the opportunity to compete at the TJHRA State finals this year and advance to Nationals on the Texas Team in the breakaway and team roping. This was an amazing experience and one I will remember forever. Being apart of such a talented team was the highlight of my summer. I am looking forward to this year of competition in the TJHRA. Being elected student president of this prestigious organization will make 2021-22 an even better rodeo season. I hope to learn new things, meet new people, and represent TJHRA in the best way possible.
