Despite the destruction of several factories by Korean war, the economic policy of the 1960s brought the development of the mecca era of manufacturing. Yeongdeungpo area Factories form traditional industrial areas, such as oil, food and machinery.

: ALLEY WIDTH COMPARISON The difference in alley width in the center of the steel industry establishes a hierarchy in the pedestrian and vehicular circulation, creating a difference in views and uses.

MOTORCYCLE/BICYCLE Small items; food delivery Alley width: 3-5m

The 9-12m road widths accommodates large trucks, lorries and other automobiles in the area concentrated with steel and metal processing companies, to facilitate the transportation of large-sized metal pieces. The

MULLAE ARTS VILLAGE

: USER EXPERIENCE 6-8m and 9-12m ALLEYS Spillage of work onto the roads occur mainly only during the day due to shortage of work space in their own workshops, causing the roads to appear narrower than actuality. Larger transport vehicles like forklifts, lorries and trucks are most commonly used to shift goods.

FACTORY FACTORY INDUSTRY

PROCESSING

Site Analysis_Steel Factory

: FACTORY Textile factories built in Mullae during the Japanese colonial period were transformed into steel mills since the 1970s. In the 90s, however, the number of iron factories decreased because of the importation of cheap Chinese steel. As a result, most of the steel factories were closed and vacant factories have increased.

From the 2000s, artists have come in to the vacant factories, where they have been given cheap land cost. Approximately 200 of the 6,000 residents have moved.

As these industries were concentrated, a network of artists and steelworkers was created and they created ‘A NEW PROCESS’.

Artists ask for custom-made work, and steel workers go through various stages of work. The work steps involve the smelting, processing, and finishing of the material. Each of the three large steps contains detailed steps.

COST REDUCTION

Because all the work process is done in Mullae, the cost of the process is reduced. For that reason, artists in Mullae make works using steel as main material and use this process of Mullae.

ISSUE ISSUE LACK OF SPACE

POLLUTION

PEDEST

MULLAE ARTS VILLAGE

: ISSUE no.1- LACK OF SPACE The site lacks green spaces, communal areas for interaction, and also working space. The need for space becomes evidently urgent, as spillage of workspaces onto vehicular and pedestrian access roads can be seen. Impromptu social spaces and mini-gardens also pepper the site, highlighting the locals’ desire to have some form of communal space.

MULLAE ARTS VILLAGE

: ISSUE no.2 - UNFRIENDLY PEDESTRIAN NETWORK The site does not have pedestrian friendly roads due to the absence of sidewalks and the presence of large scale vehicular access roads and buildings. Road width is also reduced due to the temporary extension of workspace and storage from the steel factories. Large trucks and forklifts often pass through this alley, making it difficult to transverse along these roads.

MULLAE ARTS VILLAGE

: ISSUE no.3 - SEGREGATION BETWEEN ARTIST AND STEEL WORKERS COMMUNITY Other than the occasional art mural appearing in random locations in the center of the steel industry, the art side of Mullae does not seem to actively engage or interact with the local workers, as these art traces only become more visible at night, when the workers have retired for the day.
