US EMBASSY IN MEXICO FALL 2017 SITE LOCATION: MEXICO CITY GUI COMPETITION TYPE: INDIVIDUAL ACADEMIC WORK
04
The idea is to create a space of unity, when people come to US embassy, no matter what country they from, or for what kind of purpose, they could gather together in central public open space with highly visual connection. When talking about embassy, people will think about the highly secured wall and endless waiting time for getting a visa. In order to challenge that, the concept is to design an embassy space with controllably open attitude, improved experience of getting a visa or working inside as an officer. Interacting with embassy will be more interesting as to visiting a theater. The site design bears recognition of the same center that generates it. The circular pond, the geometry patterns shading, the canopies, and the curved steps that leading the visitor to visit the embassy gradually. 05

Plan strategy is to extracting the formal elements and axis from the site to form a 2D graphic composition. Shifting and overlapping of geometries invites a compositional hierarchy. In the resulting composition, the circle, squares and axis are intended to both conceal and reveal the spaces.

The set back helps create pucblic space in front of the building. The whole volume shows its monumentality.
This height combination emphasizes the roof space of the building. It indicates the rood garden can be utilized in a high privacy.
This height combination is the final choice. This is similar to first one and the circular volume is lifted to further let the public space continue inside from the exterior.
This height combination creates a monumental tower in the front which enables visitors and officer can look down and see the graphic composition.
The height combination is rotating as it goes higher to provide more shadowing when confronting strong sunlight in Mexico.
The height combination make the building serve as a connecting/ transition hub from main street to residence area.

The center theater space can be appreciated by people from the site as well as at all floor levels and its formal language controls both the site and the circulation around the main building. Instead, the parking garage and office building help to conceal the backside of the project but also from the inside circulation to ensure a privacy and control the public flow.

THE HOLMES COUNTY ARTS & MEDICAL CENTER FALL 2016 SITE LOCATION: HOLMES COUNTY, OHIO INSTRUCTOR: TOM LEWIS INSPIRATION: BARN TYPE: INDIVIDUAL ACADEMIC WORK
012
The project is to be a combination of arts gallery, fitness, community center and medical center in Holmes County. Thoughts has been focused on how to design multi-function communicate with a way that is gentle, approachable and inspiring. The strategy is to imitate the barn structure in Holmes county, using wood beam and trusses structure to gather with the exterior wood “coat” and wood buggy parking(to the left) are designed to blend in the context of Holmes County. Ramp system is introduced to create visual interaction between different function areas. The public gathering space in both interior and exterior help convey a welcoming feeling to people from Holmes community. 013

Holmes County is noteworthy among Amish settlements in Ohio in that it is home to a very diverse group of Amish. BUILDING TYPOLOGY

DESIGN NOTES The site is located in Millersburg, OH 44654. The whole area is a hill topo. The site for the project is surrounded by some public gathering buildings like grocery store and library.
Typical gabled Roof with side shed roof
Continuous roof with direction rotation.
Two kinds of roof form combination
STRUCTURE
After close site investigation, different roof forms in Holmes draw my interest. As my initial concept is to design an art&medical center that is related to the surrounding context in a modern way, I decide to research on various forms and the structure of roof locally. The result of research lets me to think about logic relationship between functionality and form. This inspires me to design my final project in a more rational way. 014

The multi-faced envelope provides various light and shadow to the inside. Also the envelope imitates the roof form in the Holmes County to better blend in the surrounding context.
In terms of materiality, the metal truss structure is similar to wood truss, which is normally used in the barns in Holmes County. Relatively, Metal truss is more lightweight.
There are two kinds of paths in building. One is around the envelope whcih enables visitors to have great spatial experience in wood envelope, while one is in the center to have efficient circulation.

SURROUNDING SITE
The interior space takes advantage of the multi-face envelope. A walkway is below the rood top to let visitors to have a unique spatial experience.
There are two theaters. The one is in the basement and can be approached directly from the back. The other is inside the building below the giant wood roof.
The form of buggy parking shelter is similar to the building’s shape, The pedestrian path is organized along the architecture and connect context buildings.

With an intention to combine the study of architecture and landscape design together, this project is under the premise that this site needs to be fully utilized for the production of 100% of the university’s livestock demand. The concept is to create an interactive education program throughout to educate both the OSU community and the general public on the various livestock products they are consuming. The architecture program slaughter house, not only fulfills the university’s need for meat production, but also creates viewpoints and various visiting experience for visitors to engage in this interactive education program. 023

This will be achieved by featuring the contrast between the concentrated animal farming and free range animal farming practices of cattle, swine, and poultry. A slaughterhouse will bring the visitors, the inhabitants, and the utilities of the site together and allow visitors will be able to see the process from various provoking perspectives. The archiecture sits on the division center of the two sides to provide visitors an overall strong contrast of two raising methods.

VOTING BOOTH SPRING 2017 SITE LOCATION: OHIO STATE UNIVESITY THE PROJECT IS AWARDED 1 ST PLACE IN THE COMPETITION GROUP: THEO MASON ASHLEY YUAN ROLE: DRAWING , CONCEPT, HELP BUILD THE PROJECT
028
The issue that we are interested in is how to link ADA booth and regular booth in a form that can be appealing to voters to engage with. The form of the booth was derived from OMA’s CCTV building. To think out form, We made two small models of the projects and experimented with different ways to link ADA voting booth with the regular vote booth. The best solution was one component housing an ADA accessible desk with the other housing two standing desks. This approach was made into a malleable study model and further solidified in the mid review model. The desk was a product of the intersection, meant to mimic the upward arch on the interior of the ADA side. 029
The CCTV Building in Beijing is the prototype of our voting booth. As for architecture which uses light-weight diagonal bracing structure and at the same time, belongs to device design, we hope to highlight the design theme At the beginning of the design: openness, landmark, standardization and sustainability.

The voting collector area is shown the poche area of the section drawing. The whole area is covered and hidden to ensure privacy of votes. Our idea is to put in a removable triangular prism bucket. In this way, votes can be collected daily and the buckets can be reput in for second use.
EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC The main voting booth is made of white-painted chipboard. The material can be decomposited , recycled and reused. This is consistent with our initial idea of sustainablity and environmental friendly.

STRING
In this project we are looking into diagonal bracing structure method. The inclined columns are supported and connected by inserted horizontal bars. In this way, we are creating a mirage as if thin strings have the magic power to pull the heavy columns up. Also, with help of this structure method, the voting booth is going to have openess and to be a landmark.
