SAMUEL ALLERTON is a Cape-based sculptor working mainly in bronze. This particular series of sculptures is called ‘Warriors’ - small figurative works representing our generation of children and the enormous challenges they face.
CANDICE DAWN BLIGNAUT often depicts animals in her work, more so than human figures. They serve, however, as symbols of humans’ inner worlds. Animals, lacking egos, are the perfect carriers of projected meaning. These dark, unlovely animals are, for Candice, creatures that are misunderstood. To use them is to attempt to define the darker aspects of our selves.
BIANCA BRAND is a Pretoria-based illustrator whose dark subject matter is offset with bright colours. The figures that inhabit her vivid, surreal landscapes often appear masked or animalistic, in a spontaneous expression of the rebellious side of human nature
JONO DRY was raised in the beautiful seaside town of Hermanus, where he has lived, worked and exhibited for most of his young life. Entirely self-taught, his unique photorealistic-surrealist works are usually created on a large scale, using graphite on paper or board. He currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
LIZZA LITTLEWORT was born and lives in Cape Town, and uses experimental ways of working with oil paint to create unexpected, surreal accidents which she uses to express the essential absurdity of life. This particular piece is a reference to traditional Dutch still-lives from the Golden Age, in a comment on the accrual of wealth by the VOC and its impact on colonised states.
STEFAN SMIT is a painter & illustrator born in Johannesburg. This work is inspired by the impact we as individuals can possibly leave on the world around us – highlighted by the impermanence of graffiti and flesh.
GREGORY STOCK lives and works in Cape Town, where he is currently broadening his activity into investigating passion versus obsession in practising art. A consummate draughtsman and tinkerer, Stock’s work explores different states of being and periods of life.
CHRIS VALENTINE is an artist from Johannesburg. His work explores classical and contemporary painting through the lens of urban culture. Valentine is establishing a solid following for his bold portraits through which he questions the formation of identity in the age of the internet.
ALICE TOICH is a Cape Town artist, whose work draws on themes of ego, mortality, contemporary life and memory. Her work here refers to the traditional vanitas paintings of Dutch Golden Age art, an era of painting characterised by still-life compositions depicting objects that symbolise the darkness and solemn inevitability of death, though Toich uses objects of personal significance.
ADELE VAN HEERDEN is both an artist and curator, based in Cape Town, with degrees in Fine Arts, History & Politics and Honours in Curatorship under her belt. She is drawn in her choice of subject matter to the dark and unlovely, which she conveys with delicate lines and beautiful patterns.
NINA TORR uses bold hues and delicate lines against dark backgrounds to entice the viewer to look more closely at her work, convincing us to see the lighter aspects of her sombre subject-matter. She lives and works in Pretoria.
