New Jersey Pennsylvania

From The Publisher

Golfing Magazine Keeps You Engaged in Golf It’s been a unsettling and challenging first half of 2020 for many of us. But since re-opening in May, New Jersey golf courses have proved to be oases where we have been able to reconnect with friends and play the game we love, while enjoying the great outdoors in a safe fashion. More and more people are turning to golf as a way to keep fit and get out of their homes during the long days of summer. Golf, thankfully, seems to be doing quite well for itself. In this digital issue of Golfing Magazine we take you on a road trip to the Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, where you can get away and enjoy the fresh air of the Poconos and play one heck of a great golf course in a safe manner. We also have a feature on Harbor Pines Golf Club in South Jersey, one of the best tracks you will find anywhere. The course is annually rated as one of the best in the state and is only a short drive from Atlantic City. Crystal Springs Resort in the Sussex Highlands of northwest New Jersey is one of the premier golf and relaxation destinations in the Northeast, anywhere really. So why not visit and play one or all of the resort’s magnificent courses. We also give you the lowdown on the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented By Acer held in Galloway, New Jersey, which was postponed from earlier this year because of the COVID-19 shutdowns. It has been moved to October and will be played at the fabled Bay Course at Seaview, a Dolce Hotel, and golf fans should be able to attend and watch the best female players in the world battle it out. We also tell you about the newest golf balls, putters and wedges, as well as comprehensive information on new Wilson and SeeMore products. Hope you enjoy our digital magazine and you get to play at all of your favorite courses this Summer. And most importantly…keep it in the short grass. Cheers,

Sean Fitzsimmons

Chefs Corner

Culinary Creativity in the Age Of Coronavirus

By Chef Michael Weisshaupt, Fiddler’s Elbow

A

t Fiddler’s Elbow, we pride ourselves on being uniquely creative and inventive, in all phases of our operations but especially when it comes to food and beverage. Ours is not only one of the largest in New Jersey, but one of the largest for F&B in the country. I constantly am tested, and therefore am challenging my team, to come up with new ideas that set trends rather than following them. Yet, nothing could prepare us for the unprecedented challenges presented in early March as we prepared for the oncoming new golf and tennis season. While we are open yearround, the new seasons bring new energy. However, the year 2020 will forever be remembered for a horrific pandemic that gave us new words, like coronavirus, COBID-19, and social distancing, and challenges that would put safety ahead of all else. Normally this time of year we are running on full steam in our upscale Elbow Room & Bar, our 55th Hole Grill Room and patio, and at our poolside dining facility. Additionally, typically our banquet operation is in full swing at this time with golf and tennis outings , member-guests, weddings , parties and meetings and of course a full slate of member social events. New Jersey was hit incredibly hard by the pandemic, second only in the United States to New York, a state (and city) that is close by. Early on as we first heard about China it was clear that things needed to change in our approach and operations but exactly how and for how long was anything but clear. Our leadership team considered remaining open, with golf and a limited food service available to our large and enthusiastic membership. But in very short order, our governor issued a stay at home executive order that would change everything. While it was determined that 8

our course maintenance was “essential,” golf and tennis, as well as group gatherings were banned. We were allowed to offer food to go but how could I ask my team to risk coming to work. They feared for their jobs but many feared more for their safety. We made the decision to cease food and beverage operations. I set out while working from home to develop, along with my colleagues, new ways to provide value to our members while we are all at home. And I began work on a safety plan for what our kitchen would look like when we go back. While it has fast become the norm, we were among the first to offer our members a robust list of activities that they could enjoy online to stay in touch with their fellow members and our staff. Our members even took the initiative to start a GoFundMe effort to raise money for staff who suffered hardships. This was thoughtful and generous and very much representative of the culture at Fiddler’s. In turn our staff put together a heartfelt thank

Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section

you to the members and our ownership for their caring. We have featured two magicians, speakers, trivia nights, fitness classes, golf and tennis lessons, and of course cooking demos. My team has produced videos making breads, potato pancakes, and numerous entrees. For a culinary team, this gave new meaning to “production” and we have all become proficient at ZOOM. Is this the new normal, I hope not but it gave purpose to our staff and value to our members. More recently as golf was allowed to reopen, we decided to offer a to go program complete with dinners of the day and a robust list of “catered” items. Our curbside pickup with daily family meals plus an enhanced catering to go Menu has been well received and even included the opportunity for members to purchase meats direct from our outstanding vendor, Dartagnan. Our next step was to enhance our food to go program with the membership able to order their grill room favorites like wings, burgers,

salads and wood fired pizza via the club app. On June 2nd our governor announced that we could open outside dining on June 15th as our state entered phase 2 of “reopening.” Unfortunately, he provided almost no specifics to help us prepare, and interest and excitement was immediate from our membership. One thing we do know is that the experience at Fiddler’s will look much different than before. Our Elbow Room will feature a smaller more local, seasonal focused menu with our popular Sea to Table Night on Wednesdays and Steak Night on Thursdays and three nights of regular a la carte dinner. Our Grill Room will have reduced seating with tables 6 feet apart. It is important to keep the social distancing in place for the safety not only of our members but for our team in front of the house and back of the house as well. We will also be converting our ballroom, typically reserved for large events, to be used for a la carte dining in anticipation of the demands of our membership. The combination of safety precautions and high demand has pushed us to open a brand-new venue with 96 seats of outdoor dining adjacent to our ballroom that previously was not set up for a la carte service. Staff has to be retrained including banquet cooks now will need to adapt to a la carte style service at the highest level while still executing catering to go offerings. The challenges we face are immense but we are up for it. First, staff must feel safe in their work environment. We have a new, higher level of commitment to keeping up with additional daily and weekly sanitation programs. All staff must wear masks and gloves all day which certainly adds a level of discomfort for all. It is my duty as Executive Chef, and for all of our chefs, to keep our team positive and motivated. But it does not just stop here. Writing

new menus that makes sense and give the members enough offerings to satisfy their needs at a private club that has tremendously high standards, has always been a big challenge made event greater now. We now have to deal with product shortages, limited deliveries days, large price fluctuations of meats, fish, produce and dry goods. This tests our creativity and member pricing. Budgets are unpredictable at this time. The chef community is adapting to

As Ever.” This is true in all aspects of our operation. Chef Michael Weisshaupt is the highly regarded Executive Chef at Fiddler’s Elbow, a prestigious private club in Bedminster, New Jersey. He has been recognized internationally for his culinary excellence having begun his career in the Black Forest region of Germany where he attended culinary school before an apprenticeship in Switzerland. Michael has worked at many acclaimed

the new “normal” and looking at this as an opportunity to make a positive impact. Our members have been locked down for months and look to us for comfort. We are going to do everything within our power to keep them happy. After all that is “why” we are here. The safety and well-being of our staff and members has always been a priority but it has taken on the utmost of our attention. At Fiddler’s we strive to “wow” our members and guests and this will continue, with our new motto “Six Feet Apart… But As Close

ShopRite LPGA Classic

Slated for Seaview’s Bay Course October 2-4 By, JOHN TORSIELLO

W

hen the LPGA announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give would not be held in October it disappointed many fans. But the cancelation of the tourney had positive ramifications for the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented By Acer held in Galloway, New Jersey on the Bay Course at the Seaview, a Dolce Hotel. The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer, previously postponed from its May date because of the pandemic, was rescheduled for Oct. 2-4, the dates opened by the cancellation of the Meijer LPGA Classic. “Not playing the Meijer LPGA Classic is disappointing, but I am very excited that our partners at Meijer have extended their contract with the LPGA and that we’ll be coming back to Grand Rapids (Michigan) even further into the future,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “The flexibility and understanding from both Meijer and the leadership at ShopRite speak volumes to their dedication to our LPGA athletes and their charitable efforts. We look forward to visiting the Jersey Shore in October and continuing an incredible tradition of great championships and giving back to the local community.” Bill Hansen, ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer Tournament Director, said that like other sports leagues and events, the LPGA is taking direction from health organizations and governing bodies on a return to play. “The health and safety of our players and fans come first, so considering our original dates were in late May that meant very little deliberation took place,” said Hansen. “We’re living in uncertain times so there have definitely been doubts, at times, but we feel our postponement until early October gives us a great chance to host a successful event in 2020. By taking cues from heath organizations and governing bodies, the decision was largely made for us to move to October. As far as conducting this tournament in the fall, there are all 10

kinds of considerations such as course availability, playability and lodging needs. We have been fortunate in that everything has lined up very well for us.” Hansen said tournament officials have “worked side by side” with the LPGA, ShopRite, Seaview and other partners throughout the process and all have been supportive. “Sponsors are definitely on board. The fall season is a great time for golf in New Jersey and our partners are excited to come out and experience the tournament a little later in the year. The weather should be perfect, so we’re gearing up for a great event..” Organizers are planning for a full event, which includes the World’s Largest Pro-Am and welcoming fans to the course, said Hansen, while following the recommended guidance of health organizations. Hansen is confident that “We’ll pull off a smooth event because we’ve been doing it for many years. We’re also fortunate in that our event is being held in early October, so we have the ability to learn from the best

practices of both LPGA and PGA Tour events, as well as all of professional sports.” Last year’s ShopRite LPGA Classic was won by Lexi Thompson, whose calm demeanor paid off as she finished birdiepar-eagle on her last three holes in the final round on Sunday, and made a 20-foot putt for the eagle at the 18th to win the $1.75 million event on the Bay Course by one stroke over Jeongeun Lee. This year’s 54-hole event, which carries 500 points in the Race to the CME Globe for the winner, has a total purse of $2 million. The Donald Ross-designed Bay Course plays 6,217 yards for the LPGA pros with a par of 71. The event was held from 1986 to 2006 and returned to the schedule in 2010. Courses at Crystal Springs Resort Are Oases for Outdoor Enthusiasts

By, JOHN TORSIELLO

C

rystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey, considered the premier golf destination in the Northeast, is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in golf during its post COVID-19 reopening phase. Offering six championship-caliber courses within a five-mile radius, this golfing Mecca is witnessing record-breaking rounds at its unparalleled collection of upscale public courses. The Resort’s setting nestled in the Kittatinny mountain range of picturesque northwestern New Jersey has attracted many who have grown weary of sheltering in place during the pandemic. Crystal Springs is seeing many first-timers, youngsters, lapsed golfers and families playing more often. This represents a real positive aspect for a sport that witnessed several years of slow growth in participation and memberships. There has also been an increased demand for lessons and clinics at the renowned David Leadbetter Golf Academy, offering an elite staff of certified instructors. All Crystal Springs courses across the board are reporting increased demand. “Our rounds are through the roof,” said Art Walton, Vice President of Golf Operations at Crystal Springs. “We’re up 20 per cent over the prior year. Both our members and

12

public players are using the club more than ever before. We could not be more pleased to see the widespread interest from families playing together as well as new golfers who are trying their hand at the game”. Overall data shows a big leap in demand for public golf courses. Between April 23 and May 5, 2020, the number of rounds sold online at courses that remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic were up 60 per cent over the previous year, according to GolfNow, an online tee time reservations platform used at nearly 7,000 U.S. courses. Based on current activity and future bookings, Crystal Springs is anticipating that the heightened demand will continue to increase. According to Walton, “With our courses opened for about six weeks now, tee time bookings remain very strong. It seems that people are now placing a higher priority on healthy activities. Golf not only allows for social distancing, but it’s a great way to get exercise, fresh air and sunshine.” Given its outdoor and wide-open nature is conducive to social distancing practices To add to the positive outlook of the game, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced the lifting of key golf restrictions, which allows for a return to 10-minute intervals, two-player cart riding and use of caddies.

The Northeast’s largest four season golf, spa and culinary resort, Crystal Springs is only 43 miles from New York City. The two hotel resort (Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel) is known for its culinary program, hosting the internationally recognized New Jersey Wine & Food Festival and boasting 10 seasonally inspired dining venues that feature over 130 locally-sourced menu items, highlighted by 4-star Restaurant Latour and its world famous Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine cellar. Other amenities include two full-service luxury day spas; state-of-the-art Minerals Sports Club; multiple indoor and outdoor pools, including the tropical Biosphere Pool Complex with lush foliage and freeform nature pools, and six championship caliber golf courses including New Jersey’s number one public course, Ballyowen (Golf Week, Golf Advisor, NJ Monthly). In addition to serving thousands of hotel guests, Crystal Springs Resort annually hosts hundreds of weddings, special events and corporate meetings. Harbor Pines Golf Club Keeps Setting the Bar Higher

By, JOHN TORSIELLO

H

arbor Pines Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey is getting back to normal operations after the government ended closures of many businesses, including golf courses in early May. “We re-opened the day they said we could, which was May 2, with limited tee times, cart restrictions and all social distancing and safe touch guidelines in place,” said Debbie Stevenson, Director of Sales and Marketing. Since then, restrictions have been lifting including the most recent ability to accommodate outdoor dining. “The club is following all local and state guidelines for operating a business during this time. Our main concern is the safety and health of our guests and staff and we will continue to follow and enforce all policies

16 16 16

to ensure their comfort.” She continued, “Golfers were anxious to get back out on the course and our members and weekly leagues have also returned for the season. It’s great to welcome golfers back to the club and see everyone enjoying the fresh air.” The first public play was welcomed at the course in August of 1996 and Harbor Pines has remained a favorite place to play among visitors and locals. Next year the club will be celebrating 25 years of operation. When you look at the reviews online you will notice two things that are mentioned most often; customer service, and course conditions. From the moment you arrive at Harbor Pines, you know you’ve made the right choice; staff is friendly and accommodating making all guests feel like they’ve arrived at a private club. The course

Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section

is aesthetically pleasing, playable, and pace of play is around 4:15 minutes, making a round even more enjoyable. Ending the day at the club’s pub room for a great meal adds to the overall superb experience of playing at Harbor Pines. “We’ve always been known for our outstanding conditions, especially our fast and true-rolling greens,” said Stevenson. Harbor Pines is one of the best kept courses in South Jersey and a “must-play” for golfers from all over the tri-state region. The late opening aided course conditions, which, Stevenson said, this year are “supreme.” The layout at Harbor Pines offers a wonderful blend of holes, ranging from parkland style to those with more of a links feel to them. Water is a huge element that you’ll have to deal with at Harbor Pines,

which stretches to over 6,800 yards from the tips. And there are plenty of bunkers to make accuracy on your tee shots and irons to the rather large and somewhat undulating greens simply a must. The track starts with a nice, 505-yard par-five that big hitters can think about going for in two. But they must be very careful as the fairway is rather narrow, with golf-ball-eating trees to the right and water on the left that runs almost all the way to a deep green. Number five is considered the course’s toughest par-four. It plays 452 yards from the tips and bends slightly to the right. Water runs along the right side of the hole all the way to the putting surface and is situated so as to catch errant tee shots and short approaches to the green. Number eight is called “Have Mercy” and the 215-yard par-three is Harbor Pine’s signature hole and one of the toughest par-threes in South Jersey. It requires some short-game skill if your tee shot fails to find the well protected and devilishly difficult green. There is plenty of room to take an

extra club off the tee to help avert disaster. A three here is a very good score indeed. Number nine is another beast of a parfour, playing 460 yards with water left and woods right. You may need to approach the green with a long-iron or fairway wood in your hands, which will make the second shot even more dicey. Number 12 is perhaps the course’s signature hole. It is certainly the most photographed and visually stunning hole on the layout. The tee shot on this 339-yarder must clear a large pond and land in a small fairway that sits in front of the green. The putting surface is protected by bunkers and water to the rear. You can make birdie or double bogey here, depending upon your accuracy and length off the tee. Number 18 is a great finishing hole, playing 481 yards from the tips. A lusty drive that steers clear of a pond on the left and sand and trees to the right of the fairway will leave you with a perfect chance to go for the green in two and finish your round with a birdie or maybe even an eagle. For those who want to mix everyday liv-

ing with golf there are stunning homes to be found at Harbor Pines Estates. Harbor Pines Golf Club, which is also a great place to hold any type of outing or event, both big and small, offers memberships and daily fee play on one of South Jersey’s most beloved golf courses. Check out Harbor Pines for an exciting round of golf on one of the most playable and enjoyable courses in the Mid-Atlantic region. The club’s website, www.harborpines. com, offers “e-specials”, including offerings such as $10 off a round, free Titleist golf balls, complimentary lunch, and more. The club’s mobile app has its own set of offers that also change regularly. Golfers are encouraged to check often and before each booking to get the best deal available. Whether it is gaming, nightlife, fabulous cuisine, relaxing by the pool or in the spa, or enjoying a round of golf at a great golf course and other activities, there is never a dull moment when you visit this revitalized historic destination tucked into the bucolic hills of The Poconos. Pennsylvania’s first AAA Four Diamond Award casino, Mount Airy boasts over 1,800 slot machines, 80 table games and a recently opened Sportsbook, nearly 300 upscale guest rooms and suites complemented by a 20,000-square-foot convention center and ballroom that serve as a state-of-the-art venue for private and corporate events, weddings and entertainment. So, each hole replicates a famous golf hole in America, from Augusta National, Merion, Baltusrol, and more. For instance, our finishing hole replicates Pebble Beach’s famous 18th hole, a strong par-five.” Golf Course Architect Hal Purdy designed the course, which opened resort destination for outdoor enthusiasts in 1980 and plays around 6,500 yards and gaming enthusiasts alike features a from the tips. The third hole, modeled after Olympic Country Club in San Francisco, California, is a very tough, 388-yard par-four that has water along the right side of the fairway and a bunker on the right that must be avoided to set up a comfortable approach shot. Hole number seven, modeled after Pine Valley Golf Club in Clementon, New Jersey, is another challenging par-five, measuring 565 yards from the tips. The tee shot must clear a small pond and the second shot needs to find a narrow fairway and avoid a line of trees on the right that stand ready to gobble up errant shots to set up a clear third shot to the green. The ninth hole, modeled after Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas, is a very demanding, long, 219-yard parthree that has a bunker in front and bunkers guarding the flanks of the green. The 11th hole, takes you back to Merion Golf Club and is a short, 337-yard par-four that big hitters can approach off the tee. Don’t look at the scorecard and think is a piece of cake. The player must avoid trees to the right and bunkers that are scattered

If he or she does that, then birdie is an opportunity here, The 12th hole, modeled after Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia, is, quite naturally, a beautiful, 510-yard par-five where golfers can contemplate going for the green in two after a long tee shot. But he second shot demands a carry over wetlands and water, so the smarter play may be to lay up to the left side of the green and knock a wedge onto the putting surface. The 16th is patterned after Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is another shorter, 360-yard par-four where the player must get as close to a pond as possible off the tee to set up a short iron into the green. The 17th hole, inspired by Quail Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a pretty 123-yard-par three that is protected by sand traps. The green is long and narrow and not all that easy to find despite the short yardage from the teeing area. The clubhouse at the course at Mount Airy has the panache of a private club with a full service bar and restaurant, locker rooms and shower facility, and a fully-stocked

pro shop that carries many of golf ’s major brands. After your round, you can lounge about and enjoy a cold beverage and have lunch on an outdoor patio that overlooks a pond and the casino. There are several opportunities for golfers to experience this majestic course, from a casual round with friends to tournaments and special packages. At the time of this article’s publication, many of Mount Airy Casino Resort’s amenities were temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, with the exception of the golf course, which is open and operating with safety measures in place. Employees have been busy cleaning the property from top to bottom and getting it ready for guests when Mount Airy Casino Resort is able to open again. ou thought the Rutgers University Golf Course was good? Well, we’re here to tell you it’s getting even

better. In December, the club completed what was termed “a long overdue bunker and tee project”, by Lisa Jensen, PGA Professional/ Manager. “So that we didn’t have to close completely, we chose to break the project up and work on half the bunkers and the eight targeted tee boxes in the spring and complete the remaining bunkers in the fall. It will take a few years to integrate the new grass into the surrounding areas, but we are very pleased with the result.” OK, I told you management and the University are committed to making this Piscataway jewel shine even brighter. Rutgers GC is a unique public course in a collegiate setting, which is not something you get to experience on a regular basis. There are views of the surrounding academic and athletic communities on almost every hole, and the track, the golf one not the one for running and jumping, is a test for all skill levels. Said Jensen, “We look for a four-hour round of golf, and pace of play is monitored by our player assistants. I’m not sure that people are aware of this, but the timing data was developed through a review by the New Jersey State Golf Association, not just a random decision by the golf operations staff. We aren’t perfect, but we do try very hard to stick to our pace of play mission.” Jensen believes three distinct qualities separate Rutgers GC from other area courses. “We are a test for almost all level of golfer, our staff is engaged in providing great customer service, and we have an amazing group of core golfers. At 6,337 yards from the Scarlet tees, our yardage indicates that we are a short course that has little challenge; that is very far from the case. Our customers are from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds. In many ways we are the melting pot of New Jersey, and that is exactly how we like it.” Jensen said the club will continue to evaluate on an operational level what its next major improvement for the course will be, but most 22

plans are to help the course recover from the impacts that the weather had on the facility in 2018. That said, the course is in great shape. Jensen talked about some of her favorite holes on the course, picking numbers two, eight and 17. “The second hole seems like a pretty straightforward par-four, but you need to hit your drive on the right side of the fairway to have a more reasonable shot into the green, and the bunker on the right side of the fairway comes into play more than you think. The green is guarded by two well-placed bunkers that protect a narrow approach area. You have to hit a high, soft shot into this green as the day goes on, as the sun and the wind will dry it out very quickly. Most putts on the right side of the green move from right to left, opposite of what you see. The eighth is a tough par-three and always seems to play into the wind, regardless of the prevailing direction. “Whatever tee you play from on this hole, you need to hit a high shot onto this green to have it hold and have a chance at birdie. I believe that this hole plays

Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section

five to eight yards longer than the yardage indicates.” The 17th is a hole that people dread playing when they step onto the first tee box, said Jensen. From the tips it plays over 200 yards, and the green is one of the smallest on the golf course. “Players show up at this hole knowing that they need to have at least a par to walk to the 18th hole with confidence to finish a great round and bogey to salvage a good one. Water runs the whole length of the hole, and the two greenside bunkers add some anxiety to the tee shot. If you are not hitting the ball well, I would suggest you lay up in the fairway, chip on and try to make your par; otherwise choose and commit to your club and swing away.” Rutgers GC’s main tee time vendor, ForeUp, incurs no booking fees. The course also partners with Golf Now, Teeoff.com (part of the Golf 18 Network) and Victory Golf Pass to provide targeted discounts to players. Daily discounts are available after 1 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, and the course will offer specials throughout the year. Visit www.GolfCourse.Rutgers.edu.

Being Brought to a New Luster By, JOHN TORSIELLO

here are lots of changes taking place at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Branchburg, N.J. this year. There’s a new head professional, Chas Sarlund, PGA, formerly of Royce Brook Golf Club and Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club, and new teaching pros that will offer comprehensive instruction programs. In addition, the club has a new Director of Food and Beverage, TJ Farrell, who will work with new Chef, Joel Newcombe, formerly of Cherry Valley Country Club, to deliver what promises to be sensational food

and beverage offerings--from everyday grill items to special events. “We have $1 million in improvements planned including new carts, equipment and clubhouse renovations,” said Matthew Galvin, President of Morningstar Golf and Hospitality, LLC. “Some improvements will be visible to customers--from the club’s parking lot to bathrooms to the golf course-and some will be behind the scenes in technology, systems and equipment.” Galvin continued, “We are also making the club very family friendly. There is no additional charges to add a child or even a grandchild to membership. Children and

grandchildren golf and ride for free daily after 3 p.m. with a paying adult or member. Even for our public golfing guests, children and grandchildren ride and golf for free after 3 p.m., seven days a week” Galvin explained that the club is located near many businesses and offers a “Lunch Loop”, three to six holes, lunch, cart and the use of new TaylorMade rental clubs for $35, which can be fit into a busy day in under an hour on weekdays.. “The course is a hidden gem, with great holes that challenge you and will demand every club in your bag,” said Galvin. “However, it is user-friendly and

you can make it around in under four hours, not the long rounds found at other public courses. The scenery is breathtaking, especially on the ridge that runs along our back nine, without houses or highways crowding you.” Yes, Fox Hollow is simple, pure golf, no pretensions, with quick rounds, excellent greens and playing conditions, and is a superb value for both members and the public. “We draw from a wide region since we are so close to both I-78, U.S. 22, U.S. 206 and I-287 in central New Jersey,” said Galvin. “Our golfers come from all over central New Jersey and as close by as Staten Island, the Lehigh Valley, and Bergen and Mercer counties in New Jersey.” For most of Fox Hollow’s 50-year history it was a private club that drew members from the immediate area. Offered Galvin, “However, in the last four years, the club has opened to the public and we are still spreading that word and drawing from a wider area. We offer memberships without initiation fees, bonds or assessments with tee times as long as 28 days in advance in addition to being open for public play.” The members and public golfers who enjoy Fox Hollow have shared a variety of the holes they love, said Galvin. Both nine and 18 play over water and the 13th provides vistas of the Somerset Hills. “Our par-threes are a challenge. The second hole borders the Lamington River and there is no bail out spot. The 12th is a 200-yard par-three, a challenge similar to number three on the Banks Course at Forsgate Country Club and similar, but longer than number 16 at Somerset Hills Country Club. We have holes that require finesse and some where you can rip it as hard as you can.” Full and Corporate members at Fox Hollow can play either course at nearby Royce Brook Golf Club for a cart fee only up to 10 times per year. “That’s three courses for the price of one,” said Galvin.. A Special Experience at

Brigantine Golf Links By, JOHN TORSIELLO

B

rigantine Golf Links is special. Why? Well for starters Brigantine is not only New Jersey’s only authentic Scottish links golf course but also the closest course to Atlantic City, making it a homerun for any visiting guests. Brigantine also offers some of the most beautiful beaches, rich golf history dating back to the early professionals and a real comfortable feeling that is almost contagious. The island is coined as “An Island You’ll Love for Life”. It truly is something worth experiencing. The course was designed by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek. The pair had a hand in crafting a number of fine courses at the turn of the 20th century, and they instilled Brigantine with a very real sense of a traditional links layout. The track features berms, gently rolling fairways that are almost devoid of trees, tall grasses off the fairways, mounds and smallish, tricky greens so typical of links courses. Opened in 1927, Brigantine is rich in golf history. Walter Hagen and Harry Vardon reportedly played at Brigantine in order to acquire a feel for the links courses they would face at the British Open. The Links at Brigantine Beach underwent an almost $5 million upgrade during the last decade. The course has received a four-star rating in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” and is one of the best values you can find anywhere in Atlantic City, with a layout that is comparable to high-end facilities in the area. The Links Bar & Grille, has become a real staple for the area, offering one of the best burgers at the Jersey shore along with daily specials and events that cater to everyonegolfers and non-golfers alike. Although, don’t let the name fool you it is much more than just a “Bar & Grille.” Hosting private events is one of their specialties. With exceptional food, flexibility and a full hands-on approach the staff takes to ensure your worries are at ease it is a place where a return visit is almost a requirement. The “Links team” has a great history of focusing their time and energy on the important parts, the guests and guest satisfaction, and we really pride ourselves on having the friendliest staff. The facility has been improv28

ing year-by-year and its maintenance team has been doing an exceptional job with making sure that they offer some of the best putting surfaces in New Jersey. The staff also focuses its efforts on bringing back the history of golf and activities that promote the game and encourage the beginner golfer to get involved. If you like wide-open, eclectic golf courses where shot-making and short game skills are the order of the day you will love Brigantine. The course is not overly long--just 6,524 yards from the tips--but rather narrow fairways, hazards and well-protected greens make proper club selection and accurate shot-making a must to successfully navigate the track. There is a pleasing mix of holes at Brigantine, from the 541-yard par-five that can be reached in two by only the longest of hitters to the 330-yard par-four 11th hole that can almost be reached by big bombers. A

pond comes into play about 280 yards off the tee to the left side of the fairway and green on the 11th. Even if your drive does land safely, you are faced with a second shot to a severely sloped green from back to front with water surrounding the left, right and back of the green. This hole is generally recognized as the best short par-four in the South Jersey area. A Most Delightful Golfing Adventure at

The Golf Club at Manson Ridge By, JOHN TORSIELLO

I

f you like beauty, challenge and first-class treatment in your daily fee golf, then The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe, N.Y. is the place for you and your friends. Created by legendary golfer and world-renowned golf architect Jack Nicklaus, Mansion Ridge is a stunning track that was carved out of the mature forests and rolling hills of a 220-acre estate. It features rock formations, extreme elevation changes, and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Nicklaus designed this gem to test your shot-making skills and stamina, and you’ll be asked to negotiate wetlands and strike crisp shots over and around bunkers, as well as some water. The layout measures 6,899 yards from the tips and plays to a par of 72. “Mansion Ridge is all about the “member for a day” feel for our daily fee golfers,” said Patrick Wynn, General Manager of the property. “The warm and friendly staff, the fully stocked pro shop and excellent playing conditions help set us apart from our competition. Also, the delicious food and drinks help out as well. We attract most of our guests from Northern New Jersey, and Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties, as well as New York City.” Mansion Ridge’s golf course is such a unique golfing experience, with a layout and design that will challenge all individuals, regardless of handicap. In addition to the recreational golfer, the course draws metropolitan New York’s best players, PGA professionals, and even a few Tour players. Wynn considers the course’s signature hole is to be number 14, which is an uphill 30

dogleg right. “The tee shot needs to be in the left center of the fairway to have a look at the green, while avoiding the fairway bunkers left of the fairway. The approach plays uphill about two clubs to a fairly large green. A large rock wall guards the green to the left, and leaves a difficult chip. Second shots which are a little short find a pretty easy chip to help you walk away with par. This is the part of the property, which is very close to Harriman State Park, so during the fall you may even see a bear in the distance.” The course gives you a little time to warm up before you’re hit with a tough parfour, the sixth, measuring 422 yards. There’s a forced carry off the tee, and a good drive will leave you an exacting mid-iron to a kidney-shaped green. The eighth is a great, short par-four,

Golfing Magazine • New Jersey/E. Pennsylvania Section

playing 356 yards from the tips. Favor the left center of the fairway to avoid a sharp drop off to the right. Figure an extra club to the uphill green and watch out for a huge bunker that guards the right side of the putting surface. Number 10 gives you a bit of a rest as you open the inward nine. The 363yard par-four will leave you a short iron to a tired green, as long as you hit the fairway. Number 12 is a superb par-three. The 167-yarder plays over water to a wellprotected tabletop green. Short is trouble because of the water, and there’s OB beyond. The 18th is one of the best finishing holes in the region. It’s 478 yards, but a well struck drive will tumble down a hill and leave you a mid-iron to a green protected by a pond to the left. It is simply a super way to finish a memorable round. Said Wynn, “We are on year two of our new golf carts with fully equipped GPS and Bluetooth speakers that you can connect your phone.” The club offers a Monday Ladies Night and Tuesday Men’s Night, where you can play nine holes after 3:30 p.m. and get a burger and drink for a great rate. Mansion Ridge also specializes in group/ corporate golf outings, fundraisers, and charity events, with a full-service catering facility onsite. n a major step designed to give maximum support to the entire golf tourism industry, the Covid-19 Recovery Hub created by IAGTO, International Association of Golf Tour Operators, for its 2700 member companies is being made accessible, from today, to all golf courses and golf resorts worldwide that receive golf visitors, along with all hotels currently working with IAGTO golf tour operators. The Recovery Hub includes an Operational Status webpage that enables golf courses and hotels to upload and then regularly update their reopening schedule, current operational status and Covid-19 safety measures. Over 700 IAGTO-member golf tour operators in 62 countries receive a Daily Update notifying them of changes made to the site in the past 24 hours. Most importantly this means that there is now one global central resource for the golf tourism industry to keep track of the changes that are being implemented in golf destinations worldwide literally every hour, avoiding time-consuming administration and communication. IAGTO Chief Executive Peter Walton said: “We made the decision to extend this essential service beyond our membership in order to ensure that every golf destination on the planet now has a mechanism to keep golf tour operators informed of the precise operational conditions in place at every golf course in their region. Access to our Recovery Hub site is now entirely free of charge to nonmember golf courses and golf resorts.” Walton added: “In our role as the global trade association of the golf tourism industry, our entire focus since March has been to provide guidance and create tools that will 32

ensure that our tourism sector is the best prepared for the recovery from this unprecedented crisis.” The Operational Status section of the Recovery Hub focuses on five aspects of golf course and hotel operation: · Current status and conditions of current visitor access · Date and details for reopening or next phase of reopening/increasing visitor access · Compliance with local government standards and regulations relating to Covid-19 · Details of Covid-19 safety measures currently in place · Covid-19 safety certification To gain access to the Covid-19 Recovery Hub, golf courses and golf resorts that are not currently members of IAGTO must first

The Best Ball For you

By, DEAN SNELL SNELL GOLF Selecting the right golf ball is a critical step toward better golf. Unlike the rest of the equipment being used, the golf ball factors into every shot. In an instant gratification world, it’s understandable why the majority of golfers just grab a sleeve of balls at the course based on the golf staff’s recommendation. Instead, let’s review how Tour professionals test/fit their golf balls.

Performance Balls Bridgestone TOUR B x / XS $44.95

www.BridgestoneGolf.com

Unique Features: The TOUR B X & XS features a new REACTIV cover technology to combine distance and more spin. With REACTIV you can now get more distance and more spin out of the same golf ball. Designed to fit golfers with Tour-fast swing speeds of over 105 miles per hour. The TOUR B X is engineered for maximum distance as well as hit and sit performance on these close shots. The B X has been validated professionally by Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, and Lexi Thompson. The B XS has a softer feel and maximum greenside spin, allowing you to stop approach and pitch shots on a dime. The Tour B XS was designed and is played by Tiger Woods.

Start on the Putting Green Elite players all start on the putting green. Start by bouncing a few different types of golf balls off the face of your putter. By doing so, you will feel/hear how soft each one is. Today, there are a lot of 2-piece balls that are actually made softer than tour balls. A Tour-caliber ball with a thin cast urethane cover will be quieter and softer. It’s important to choose a ball that sounds & feels right. After all, more than 30 percent of your strokes will come off the putter face.

The Recovery Zone (Inside 40 Yards) I call this the “recovery zone,” because if a golfer is off the green 40 yards and using a wedge, he/she has missed the green in regulation and now needs to recover by getting up and down for par. Since an average 15-handicap golfer only hits about four greens per round, a lot of time should be spent in this zone when testing balls. Using the club you prefer on short pitch shots, hit a series of small chips and flops to evaluate the ball’s behavior. Did the ball stop immediately? Bounce once and check? Run out? This can be an arduous process, but will be one of the biggest determining factors in choosing the ball right for you.

The Scoring Zone (Inside 100 Yards) This is the distance where players are the most accurate. It is also where performance differs from ball-to-ball. In my experience with Tour pros and average players, the better player will spin the ball with their wedges twice as much and as a result, are able to zip the ball backward. Having a ball that will stop faster and reduce roll out may eliminate additional strokes. As a general rule, if the ball is settling near the pitch mark (and not running out), it is a good fit.

Approach Shots (Inside 165 Yards) The final step in finding the right golf ball is with mid and long irons shots to test the ball’s performance into a headwind. Which ball travels at the highest peak trajectory? If a ball is consistency shorter, it may be spinning too much.

Off The Tee All golf balls today travel the same distance, so I don’t advocate ball fitting with a driver. The proper loft, shaft selection and strength are the best ways to add extra distance! 38

Unique Features:

Unique Features: The Pro V1 features a more efficient design. A proprietary cast thermoset urethane elastomer cover system provides scoring control. From 2011 to 2016, golf balls with RZN Technology helped elite golf athletes claim more than 50 wins on professional golf tours around the world (PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, PGA European Tour, Ladies European Tour etc.), including 4 majors! That same RZN Technology is now available in the MS-TOUR golf ball. The MS-TOUR is a 3-Piece golf ball with a soft urethane cover. It provides long distance on all long irons, woods and driver, good control all around the green and reduced air drag due to its Micro Dimple Surface! Must Play

A Bit of the British Isles at

McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links By, JOHN TORSIELLO

A

wonderful course, designed by Stephan Kay to replicate the distinct Irish and Scottish golfing experience, McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links, located only minutes from Atlantic City, N.J., keeps improving like a top shelf single malt. Kay designed a course with wide fairways that are open to the tricky winds that sometimes assault the golfer, grass mounds and bunkers, vast natural waste areas, and undulating greens that test even the best players. You can’t help but to walk off after your round and feel that you may just have been in the British Isles rather than southern New Jersey. “McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links is a great place to play because of the unique layout, with each hole designed after a famed European hole,” said General Manager Tom Sullivan. “With holes inspired by Royal County Down, St. Andrews, Royal Troon, Carnoustie and others it’s like going across the pond without the long journey. We have a truly inspired links design with rolling hills, elevated tees, undulating greens, remarkable grass mounds and bunkers, tricky and powerful winds that remind players of the challenge and allure of true British Isles’ golf, all at an affordable price.” The club this year added new tee boxes on holes 1, 3, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 17. Said Sullivan, “These changes were made in an effort to make the game more fun at MEGL, as well as making our course more lady, senior and junior friendly. We also added a hybrid of the Gold and White tee boxes to add another alternative to those that may not want to play 100 percent of either one of those tee boxes for the reason of not being ready to move completely forward or back.” McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links plays 6,535 yards from the back tees, 6,132 from the white, 5,743 yards from the white/gold, 5,244 yards from the gold, and 4,462 yards from the front markers. The slope from the championship

tees is 135, denoting the difficulty of the course from that yardage. But the slope ratings for the other tee boxes are 129 and lower, showing the very approachable nature of the course from shorter overall distances. Added Sullivan, “Last fall, we added storm shutters and heat to our enclosed 2,000-squarefoot deck. This change has enabled our deck to be a four season room to host events and banquets anytime for up to 120 people.” Here’s just a sample of the very cool holes you will find at McCullough’s Emerald Links. McCullough’s par-three 206-yard second is a rendition of the famous Biarritz hole and has been redone many times by C.B. Macdonald and Charles Banks. The Biarritz hole has a very long green from front to back with a very deep and large valley in its center. The original hole had bunkers on both sides of the green, but again, McCullough’s decided not to penalize the golfer so early in the round. The only bunkers, therefore, are on the left side of the green. McCullough’s eighth, a 414-yard parfour, is based on the 10th hole at Turnberry.

Turnberry has the sea to the left, and McCullough’s has an enormous pond to replicate the water. The hole doglegs a little more right than at Turnberry, but plays comparably. The original tee at Turnberry is slightly elevated, the one at McCullough’s is even more so, with greater elevation change than other courses in southern New Jersey. The hole plays a little shorter than its yardage because of the downhill tee shot. McCullough’s 16th hole, a short, 136-yard par-three, is based on one of the most photographed holes in Scotland, number eight at Royal Troon, known as the “Postage Stamp”. It is called such because of the small narrow green. The hole is similar to Troon’s, except the green is a little larger. The bunkers are just about as deep and the green is partially hidden, as is the original. The 358-yard par-four 18th at McCullough’s is based on the great fourth hole at Scotland’s Prestwick. Along the right side of Prestwick, a long creek and an out of bounds area gobbles up many golf balls. McCullough’s pond will do the same. Fairway and greenside bunkers are placed exactly as they are at Prestwick. McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links is offering a number of fall specials, including: Mondays (Senior Day) green fee and cart for $39;Tuesdays, green fee, cart and sleeve of Titleist golf balls for $39;Wednesdays, green fee, cart and lunch for $39;and Thursdays (Hero Day--first responders, i.e. police, fire, EMTs, veterans and active military), green fee and cart for $39.
