"It's my private mountain. It belongs to me. God told me if I painted that mountain enough, I could have it." - Georgia O'Keeffe.
INTRODUCTION OF STUDY A healthy lifestyle is determined by the built environment where one resides. The motives behind how Georgia O’Keeffe chose to live has influenced this study to explore how architecture can sustain and improve a way of life. APPROACH Acquiring information from an array of studies depicting the psychological effects of the built environment has lead to the understanding of how to approach the design of a dwelling for a certain individual. REASONING Georgia O’Keeffe was known as the mother of modernist painters; for myself, O’Keeffe is a role model for her views on how lifestyle can influence a blissful exploration for ones self endeavors. By researching the health effects that are mirrored by a constructed dwelling, provides an answer to how a designed environment can sustain a healthy lifestyle and mindset.

STRATEGY The Mount Mitchel Visitor Centers’ presence takes into account the sensitivity of the site, considering that the architecture should pay respect to the endangered Tall Grass Prairie. This building is oriented with the topography as to avoid intruding on the site. The building pad is then sunken into the topography to lower its profile in elevation to the nearby structure, embedding the architecture into the surrounding site.

TAPIO WIRKKALA SCHEMATIC DESIGN | 2 WEEKS TYPE: PUBLIC USE SITE: HELSINKI, FINLAND YEAR: THIRD YEAR 2020

“ Material always entails opportunities, it is as “ if it urges one to create something out of it.
Tapio Wirkkala is a highly respected Scandinavian designer from Finland. He created the majority of his work from the 1940’s - 80’s crafting everlasting pieces that still inspire artists today. Wirkkala’s versatile career consisted of working with wood, plastic, silver, ceramic and his most iconic, glass. Here in this exhibition, specific pieces of Wirkkala’s glass work are honorably showcased. These pieces show his diverse understanding of the properties of glass. His work embodies inspiration gained from nature and popular trends he discovered while working in Italy under Paolo Venice. CHANTERELLE & BOLLE In this display case the Chanterelle and Bolle series are specificity chosen and displayed because of their color; clear, white and black. These pieces are brought to their full beauty by using contrast and enclosure to focus on the objects that are illuminated with a single light. BOLLE & COREANO The Bolle and Coreano collection were chosen to be displayed here because of their unique color. The LED light shelf illuminates the pieces showing the beautiful color and properties of glass.
INFOMATION WALL The information wall is a black wall of glass that is etched with a laser. The black coating is etched off by the laser to allow artificial light to shine through the glass. The viewers of the exhibition will have an image of Tapio Wirkkala, biography, information about the glassware as well as a list of awards Wirkkala has earned throughout his career.

DOWN LIGHT DISPLAY Once walking into this display peripheral views are blocked, focusing the visitor on a singular piece illuminated under one light. FRAMING VIEW The view focuses on displayed objects by framing them with the opening of a passage way. FOCUSING VIEW In section the display case creates an enclosure to focus on the object that is on display.

SKYLIGHT RELATIONSHIP The skylight and display case together unite giving importance to the display case and to look as if it fell from the ceiling, finding its place in the room. LED LIGHT SHELF The LED light shelf allows there to be an even glow through the whole display, illuminating the glass pieces.

STRATEGY The Kansas City Call is located on the eastern side of Kansas City in the 18th and vine District. This building is planning for an extension and renovation to a preexisting structure. The Call’s headquarters is a historic building in Kansas City and as well an international landmark for African American owned businesses. As the architect and designer of this project, my motive is to restore, adapt and reuse The Calls historical building. Moves have been made to restore The Calls exterior presence between the 1920’s through 1960;s with a little influence of 21’s century technology. With this renovation the goal is to preserve the industrial age of the building by the sustainable re-purposing of preexisting structure and materials

TYPOLOGY | SPACE | TOPOGRAPHY | TECTONICS | EXPRESSION Mass is extruded from the ground and swung out to hold program, creating space for the pool. The location of the pool is at the lowest elevation on site, idealizing the natural flow and pooling of water. Swimming and sunbathing is a primal activity so the mass extruded from the land and location of the pool relate to a idea of a natural place where one would go to swim. Carving through the mass creates a main entrance and ceremonial entrance that develops a relationship with the site through movement and moments that frame views. Carving through the masses and allowing the topography to interact with the pool house emphasizes the sense that it belongs within the land. From a distance the concrete mass extruded from the landscape relates to the topography, emphasizing the contrast of the white plaster roof to the natural site. Visually the roof evokes curiosity anticipating the experience within. The mass of the roof is punctured above to allow light within and proportioned to avoid harsh lighting creating ambient light. Detailing where roof meets the walls creates contrasts where large forms appear weightless.

MISCELLANEOUS
46 | Miscellaneous ARCHITECTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is a tool to show the world through my eyes. I tend to think of photography as a similar way to watching clouds change shape in the sky, at one moment there is a perspective or expression that composes itself. In that very second is the only moment in time to capture that image. Composing a photograph correctly will allow the space or object to dance.
