El templo Inmaculada Concepción de María, ubicado en aldea Paxixil, en San Francisco El Alto, Totonicapán, ha llamado la atención de cientos de turistas; esto no solo por el fervor que se vive en el lugar, sino por ser una pieza arquitectónica llena de arte que deslumbra a quienes lo visitan.

Estilo gótico

Esta iglesia se caracteriza por su estilo gótico. En su interior se destaca su bóveda ojival, muy característica de este tipo de arquitectura, originaria de Europa.

Los detalles se extienden a cada una de las columnas, así como las bancas elaboradas de madera. Además se pueden contemplar varios vitrales, donde puede apreciarse la imagen de San Francisco de Asís, entre otros.

Sin embargo, no es la única en su estilo en el occidente del país, pues también se encuentra la iglesia San Nicolás, en la cabecera departamental de Quetzaltenango,de la cual se finalizó su construcción en 1940.

This church features a gothic style. Inside, it stands out for its ogival vault, characteristic of this type of architecture from Europe.

Dedicada a la Inmaculada Concepción

En el centro del altar usted podrá contemplar la imagen de la Inmaculada Concepción, ya que el templo está dedicado a esa advocación. En Guatemala, la devoción a la Inmaculada Concepción fue instituida por la orden franciscana, después de su llegada a estas tierras, en el siglo XVI. Además, fue declarada patrona tutelar de la ciudad de Guatemala, en 1617.

El recinto fue inaugurado a mediados de febrero de este año, y fue construido por las donaciones de los habitantes del lugar.

¿Qué más hacer?

Además de visitar el templo, en San Francisco El Alto puede recorrer su mercado, el cual es considerado uno de los más grandes del país, ya que ocupa cerca del 80% del casco urbano de ese municipio. En el mercado encontrará textiles, verduras, frutas, y artesanías.

Asimismo, podrá visitar los riscos de Momostenango o bien las Cuevas de Chumundo, las cuales son consideradas sagradas.
