SHANAG, HIMACHAL PRADESH
GUIDE : A r . SHAHVEER IRANI & A r . CHAITALI MAHAJAN
The brief was to design an extension to the existing village, consists of four individual dwellings, an extension for an existing dwelling and a community school. Shanag, a village in Himachal Pradesh, which lies in seismic zone 4 and known for its kath-kuni style of architecture. Due to the lack of resources & the restriction on the cutting down of cedar trees for timber, its traditional style of building techniques is getting lost. The design challenge was to provide a housing typology which is extremely effective in seismic resistance & cater thermal insulation using locally available materials.

RESEARCH CENTER
KOCHI, KERALA
GUIDE : A r . JOYEETA SEN
The brief was to design a reasearch center which preserves the culture and biodervisity of Kochi. Inspires, promotes and appreciates its diversity of thoughts connecting different communities. Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India’s coastal state, kerala. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to arab, chinese and european merchants. Sites reflecting those influences include Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship. Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, typical of Kochi, have been in use for centuries. The flora of the region is predominantly tropical which helps in trees like coconut and banana to grow which comes handy for various purposes. It has many varieties of bananas like ‘Ethakka’ and ‘Pazham’ which further get used all over from its fibre (known as musa fibre) which helps in manufacturing of textile & handicraft to the leaves used for wrapping food andto its stems which serves as a vegetable food.

These shared workspaces offer a suite of office-like amenities such as hot-desks, private meeting rooms, kitchens, coffee, etc. The whole idea of co-working is to bring bright, creative people together and let the ideas collide.

The Kothi sector has another structure similar to Aurobindo Nivas. The Jaysinghrao public library with its exposed brick facade and Indo-saracenic style of architecture .The Wada style planning of the structure is inspired from Ambekar Wada and Bhavaskar Vithal Wada (both built in same time period). It is evident from the urban context that elements like these were popular during that era .

1. Built and Unbuilt:
2. Layout:
The ratio of built to unbuilt is 1:3. The landscape creates a spatial balance between the built form and enhances the spatial qualities of the structure. At the same time landscape forms the foreground of the structure which hinders the visual connection between the street and the structure. The soft scape helps in reflection of heat, which along with trees help in cooling the environment.
In the vedas, east direction is considered to be auspicious, the memorial of Shri Aurobindo Nivas faces towards the east making it receive morning sunlight. The memorial has been positioned adjacent to the structure in order to focus on semi sacred (ashram) more than the sacred (memorial). Hence, prioritizing the former.

Aurobindo spent 14 years in Baroda ostensibly as A professor of English in state college. He was also the brain behind the emerging national radical movement. The bungalow of Khaserao Jadhav acted as a platform for Sri Aurobindo to associate with the local people including his students and fellow professors of Baroda. This helped him instigate his ideas of spirituality and Nationalism within the native people. However, at present Aurobindo Nivas is locally neglected. Very few people apart from followers of Sri Aurobindo are aware about the existence and purpose of this structure.
