If the world suddenly stopped using labels I would be just as happy not being called a graphic designer. Graphic design is what I do, what I love and most importantly it’s who I am. But I simply like to think of myself, in the words of Albert Einstein, as passionately curious. Growing up in a single parent home I had to learn to be self sufficient at a young age and my mother rarely had a chance to spend the time she wanted helping me with schoolwork. Thankfully she is also the strongest, most selfless and passionate person I know. Her example motivated me to learn how to play chess when I was ten so I could learn the board’s coordinate system and eventually play without pieces. That drive was the reason I disassembled my first gaming console, to learn how to put it back together with predictably regrettable results. That curiosity led me through a path of career opportunities, dinosaur wrangler at Jurassic Park, architect, chess master, scientist, mathematician, architect again and computer engineer. Things inexplicably made sense when I reached graphic designer. I’ve always been driven by questions and the search for answers. When I discovered design I wasn’t initially drawn in by a love of art or graphics but rather the cognitive and emotional responses those visual aesthetics produced in people. For me, human psychology is the most intriguing aspect of graphic design--understanding how color, image, typography, materials and many other visuals generate specific reactions. Design is a series of equations with no single answer and I am passionately curious to discover the many possibilities.

SAN DIEGO CENTRAL LIBRARY Min Choi Branding Systems Identity | Environmental | Interactive Opening in Summer 2013, the new San Diego Central library is set to serve as a multi-dimensional learning platform to rival top institutions in the country. Facing the rapid pace of technological change, the library wanted to introduce a brand identity that embodies this new age of learning advancements. Connecting a diverse community with free educational and cultural resources the library enriches the lives of residents and 5.6 million visitors. The look and feel embodies the beauty of the architecture, wide open and radiant, fluidly touching all aspects of the user experience. The convivial aesthetic of the logo also reflects a state-of-the-art core with pieces coming together forming a metaphor for community gathering at the iconic dome. A dynamic color system gives the brand flexibility offering opportunities for innovation in the marketplace. A range of library card options is the first step to create an affable library experience with a variety of different colors and patterns. I created the “Libraries open windows to the world,� billboard campaign to catch the attention of commuters and graphic motifs are also applied to the trolley system. The brochure and website collectively attract users by providing information and visual systems representative of the technological age. Once inside, the brand becomes a large part of the user experience providing access to a library app with catalog information, video access, research resources, an interactive map and much more. Environmental branding immerses patrons through the use of colors, materials and furniture installations that create welcoming space spaces. The technological highlight of the new library are interactive information stations using the latest multi-touch display technology coupled with a research algorithm that gathers information from multiple databases, creating a four layer learning interface (user -> touch -> word -> visual).

BLOOM QUARTERLY MAGAZINE Sean Bacon & Candice Lopez Todd Selby Inspiring | Whimsical | Versatile A guide and insider’s look into the world of women in the creative field, Bloom Quarterly is a magazine that features articles about professionals, living and workspaces and healthy habits. The primary audience for this publication is upper income, educated, inventive women age 25-40 with an interest in health, decorating, and professional lifestyles from an imaginative point of view. The big idea of promoting creative vitality is the organizational focus for this publication’s strategy and communications. By narrowing the focus to this demographic the magazine creates a distinctive culture giving it a competitive advantage to help these women make informed choices for the ever day. At the core of this big idea is a commitment to delight readers by delivering the right mix of inspiring design, innovation and value to Bloom. This central idea is a unifying concept that delivers the brand essence through key messages, voice and tone. To communicate the spirit of this vibrant brand I designed a masthead monogram that is lively but refined. Each cover is minimal and sophisticated focusing on one creative individual who is also the subject of the lead story. I created a whimsical custom, display typeface called Polaris to complement the spirit of the feature article. Polaris is an inline semi-script font appropriate for headline and drop cap usage. The editorial layout is also kept minimal yet has dynamic movement to engage the reader creating a sense of movement through the spaces highlighted in the photographs. The crafting of white space is an integral element to the spreads and pull quotes are knocked out of rounded shapes that overlap artful photography, guiding the reader.

AIGA PORTFOLIO REVIEW 2012 Gary Benzel Design Studio Strategic | Conceptiual | Modular Portfolio reviews are a valuable resource providing students an opportunity to strive for their best work, building confidence and presentation skills. The purpose of this event is to gather feedback on current work and grow their networking skills as students work to define a sense of direction for the future. The annual portfolio review is the event of the year for students ready to set out into the professional world of graphic design. AIGA San Diego wanted to announce and embody the 2012 review to both professionals and students by appealing to their passion for design. With this in mind, I created an identity focused on creativity through structure by developing different typographic systems all from the same grid. Strategically I felt this approach would represent the diversity found in the varied work of student designers given the same guidelines. The new phone app makes it easy for organizers and students to easily find their table once at the event while providing information about all students participating. The judge’s badge serves as nameplate, event schedule and voting card with an intuitive layout that is both functional and compact. Likewise, the student name badge has the dual purpose allowing students to vote by tearing away part of the badge and writing in a number for the student choice selection. The AIGA San Diego awards are unique pieces of art made from translucent acrylic expanding on the brand while commemorating the accomplishments. A full way-finding system, complete with directional and aesthetic visuals, brings the event together by guiding participants and observers to the proper areas. The attention given to portfolio review branded materials shows respect to the efforts of students as the future of our industry who inspire the professional design community with their energy and fresh viewpoints.

LE CORBUSIER EXHIBITION Gary Benzel Design Studio Environmental | Typeface Design Corbusian is typeface inspired by the works of influential architect Le Corbusier and was created to serve as the primary typeface for an upcoming Le Corbusier exhibit at MoMA. The exhibit targets an educated audience with an interest in the history of architecture and design age 25-40. The typeface is highly influenced by both Le Corbusier’s architectural use of pilotis supports and his one of a kind furniture. The space itself is temporary structure located outside of the museum walls built especially for this exhibition, in the same spirit as the Barcelona Pavilion. In homage to the architect I took a twist on his fourth point towards new architecture by creating an experience where the walls are made of glass and the window frame becomes a lens into the world of Le Corbusier. Photography of some of his most famous buildings is shown in sequence, breaking down the structure from the exterior to interior details. The scale model used is created with acrylic walls and vinyl to help simulate the obscured view that a passerby would see. In true Corbusian fashion, the base of the structure is a foundation of untreated concrete. Unique billboards were created using hand drawn sketches of this pioneer of modern architecture that highlight his accomplishments in city planning. Both the guest admission tickets and exhibit program come with a broad format that hearkens back to the wide window frames often seen throughout his work. The exhibit program also expands into a keepsake commemorative poster.

KEY WORDS CONCEPT

Playful | Journey | Engaging Ethnotes is a unique compilation of diverse music that introduces the listener to the world’s cultures. Combining illustration, packaging and storytelling, this product is aimed at culturally creative women age 20-35 who want to stretch their music horizons or escape to another place through music. Each of the illustrations was first hand drawn with a simplistic, geometric style with a collage of subject matter that represented an ethnically rich, genre. They were then treated with hand painted watercolor washes to create texture and dimensionality adding a fresh and welcoming aura. The artful logo fuses together the three music styles to form a unique mark that works across all genres. The packaging is designed as an experience, from the use of materials and attention to detail to the layering. The exterior slipcase is printed and wrapped with canvas while the interior is lined with handmade paper. A minimalist vellum jacket holds everything in place. I used a vivid bright strip that invites the user to continue their journey, first revealing a vinyl record within a colorful slip case. Once removed, the interior case reveals a one of a kind handmade coptic-bound journal and accompanying pen. Removing the journal reveals another layer with the music in two digital deliveries, a traditional CD and a unique USB drive. The inside case is lined with lively handmade and corrugated wave paper. The brand is further applied in vinyl format throughout the packaging to give it a crafty, but professional quality.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LEARNING SERIES Amy Levine Advanced Typography Educational | Intuitive | Youthful

Inside is the name for a series of books by National Geographic working to provide educational information and ideas with a focus on language, literacy and content. This tagline captures the essence, personality and positioning of the textbooks and differentiates it from competitors. Each book in the series works as a stepping-stone for the next and targets public middle school students by using a graphic system that appeals to the current technology driven generation. The goal of the textbook series is to boost student performance and understanding. This program provides for whole-group instruction, flexible small-group activities, and partner practice that will engage students with DVDs, online learning activities, and instructional strategies focused on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing. With five volumes, the books are less dense than most textbooks providing a platform for a more dynamic learning experience. The designs represent the age of technology in a traditional format by using sans serif typography, a playful color palette and eclectic imagery that offers a peek into the content. Each volume is intended to visually interact with the previous one while providing more details and imagery. To connect the series I designed a honeycomb pattern that visually links each level A through E and suggests an information super highway of interchange and knowledge. The book title is highlighted inside a shape that relates to the overall pattern and when placed side by side the motif connects into a continuous form The digital tablet version of the book allows for further user interaction such as note taking on screen, learning videos and includes a custom National Geographic Inside series stylus.

SAKEMASU IDENITY MaeLin Levine Logo & Packaging Contemporary | Sensorial | Dynamic A modern twist on the traditional izakaya, Sakemasu features a wide selection of traditional sake along with other Japanese beverages accompanied by traditional cuisine. This establishment aims to attract men, ages 30-45, who enjoy gathering with friends for a sensorial sake experience. Inspired by the geometric wooden sake drink vessel, Sakemasu’s visual aesthetic is built around a unique interaction between materials, lighting and the guest. A minimalist color palette of bamboo green and indigo ink black form the foundation of the brand which is applied to a range of materials including acrylic, brushed steel, colored glass and dark wood. Attention to detail begins with the carefully crafted restaurant forms that immerse workers, patrons and potential employees into the brand. From the job application to inventory slips, feedback forms and guest receipts the identity is fully incorporated in every aspect of the establishment. Unique to-go food containers are designed to be an all-in-one package that includes eating utensils such as chopsticks making it easy to transport take home food. Pattern and color is used to brand eating utensils and sake sets that are a part of the dine-in experience. The highlight of the restaurant is the intelligent lighting system that runs throughout the exterior and interior of the building. At night, the signature awning light system demands attention from passersby while fluctuating light intensity relative to the number of patrons inside at the time. Smart sensors in the flooring help the system decide what intensity the exterior lighting system should be set at. When they detect little movement the brightness outside increases to increase attention while dimming for a packed house. Inside, the same floor system helps manage personal lighting so that empty areas do not waste electricity by dimming unused booths and hallways.

POSTER EXPLORATION Typography | Layout | Type & Image One of the most affordable and perfectly sized methods of print media, posters have become a staple throughout all disciplines of graphic communication. They have a unique ability to convey a wide range of visuals and information on almost any surface for minimal cost. Experimenting with the dynamics of a static medium where the goal is to grab the attention of a moving audience has helped me construct a foundation for the rest of my work. At their core, posters are the most basic form of environmental design with a multi-layered goal. First and foremost is the ability to catch the eye of pedestrians with an interesting quick read from afar. This is followed by a middle layer of information that engages the audience with a core idea they can potentially relate to. Once that is accomplished, the final layer acts as a friendly formality to a reader who has already decided to become involved in the content. I’m fascinated with the concept of creating a series of posters to help tell a compelling story. This acts as a fourth layer of communication by offering different views on the same point. A prime example of this in effect is my San Diego Central library poster series that uses a playful “peeling back” effect to intrigue and give viewers a peek into the adventures found when you enter the library. The TYPE series is a set of informative posters using found typography from the world around us to educate nondesigners about the subtleties of type. Focused on the power of letterforms that through the use of different classifications, speak with their unique weight and drawn characteristics and inform by serving utilitarian purposes. Creating typography that interacts with photography, as seen in The Greatest Barrier poster, uses unexpected imagery while the shifting type styles of the Peter Pan and Wendy poster not only tells a story but creates an intriguing texture from afar. The remaining posters were done for the SDSU School of Music and Dance and abstractly represent each performance without resorting to cliché images of instruments.
