LIAM SHOLICAR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Hello... I’m Liam Sholicar A third year Design for Industry student at Northumbria University

About me

I am a friendly and outgoing 21 year old Industrial Design student from Cambridge, currently in the third year of a four year degree at Northumbria University. During 2015, I completed a six month student placement with Bosch in Stowmarket. I am currently looking for a three to six month placement, starting at the end of March 2016. I am open to consider any challenging role where I can progress my career whilst having a positive impact on peoples’ lives through design.

Education

Degree BA (Hons) Design for Industry - Northumbria University, Newcastle (2013 - 2017) A-Levels Maths (B), Business (B), Physics (C), Product Design (C)

Experience

Bosch Lawn and Garden (March 2015 - September 2015) I spent six months working here for my year two placement as an engineering intern. This placement is covered in more detail on the next page. Cambridge Industrial Design (September 2013) I spent one week working here before I began university to gain experience in a consultancy. I learnt a lot during this week about how different ‘the real world’ is to work completed at GCSE or A levels.

Technical skills My education and work experience has greatly increased my skills in sketching, rendering, modelling, prototyping, CAD design, creative thinking and team work. Through my industrial placement I also feel I have a good appreciation of design for manufacture. I am confident in using SolidWorks, KeyShot, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows and Mac OS.

During the summer of 2015 I worked as an intern in the professional power tools division of Bosch in Stowmarket.

I was employed at the Bosch Stowmarket plant. This is a factory site with full inhouse manufacturing facilities. I was a member of a small design department working on next-generation battery powered professional garden tools. In addition to general training, I gained direct hands-on exposure to the manufacture and test of the Bosch “blue industries” products.

The feedback I received throughout my time at Bosch was incredibly positive. The Lead engineer (EPV) for the blower project is Robert Groenewald, he was also my mentor, and the EPV for the hedgecutter is Aaron Kelly. I spent almost all my time working alongside these two people and below is some feedback I received from them.

My responsibilities included the design of product tests, the completion of test reports, the design and construction of test rigs and the repair of products for field testers. I also contributed to design team meetings and gained direct experience of the production line to understand the impact of design decisions on the production efficiency and costs.

“Liam has been a great addition to the team. He has shown initiative through-out his time with Bosch. This has been very impressive to see from a student. I feel confident giving Liam many tasks and he will complete the job with minimal further input from myself or others. If he needs further information concerning a test for instance, he will reference the standards needed. If then he still does not feel he fully understands, the engineers will fully support him. Liam is not one to sit and wait for tasks. He often comes to a member of the team once tasks are complete and asks for more to do. He has also been found to look into test plans to see if there are any tasks he can complete without prompting.” - Aaron Kelly

Below are some images of work I completed, unfortunately I cannot show images of the products themselves as a confidentiality agreement was signed. The products are targeted to be released in early 2016. Starting from the bottom left, I undertook the following tasks: • Designed and built a vibration test rig to an engineer’s requirements • Constructed a control box for use on an endurance test rig • Multiple noise emission tests with Bosch and competitior products • Designed and made an electronics enclosure, including bead blasting and hand bending for use on a test rig constructed by a colleague and I • Designed, built and tested a hedgecutter rig for use at a conference in Germany • Machined parts of hedgecutter blades to be trialled in the field • Prepared and attached thermocouples to a product to measure any potential temperature rise during prolonged operation

“I can only agree with what Aaron has written. As mentioned before, we’ve seen many students come and go with different backgrounds of experience and knowledge. For Liam, I was very impressed with the confidence shown in his work and how he strived to do things independently as he took interest in the work we give him. Additionally, I have noticed that for many tasks Liam would always make an effort to find better ways of doing them, and to do it in a quicker/more efficient way. This shows initiative!” - Robert Groenwald

SPARK Spark was a project completed with the Northern Housing Consortium with the aim of designing a product or service to help dementia patients. In collaboration with Northern Housing Consortium

Spark is an app and tablet system designed to help and accompany those suffering various stages of dementia. Initially Spark would just be released in the app format, with the custom tablet and display stand shown on the right to be released later. Spark allows relatives and carers to upload images, music, calender events and reminders through a cloud accessed system. Relatives and carers can also video call the user.

WebEx Queue Pod When using WebEx it can become difficult to get a point across or hear others talking due to a bad microphone, connection and speakers. The queue pod aims to counter these issues. In collaboration with Seymour Powell

TRIO Consistent and efficient cutting was the aim of the Trio knife range. A combination of shredding scissors and kitchen knives led to this piece of design.

Trio is a knife designed to improve cutting efficiency and accuracy. Thought up through a brief which required the combination of two products, Trio combines a pair of shredding scissors and a knife.

Pink foam sketch models

Anodised blade indicator

Filleted elipses stop sticking

Engraved Trio logo

All knives modelled in SolidWorks and rendered in KeyShot

Additional work

The images on this page show CAD models designed by me for a variety of projects. Piega (bottom left) was modelled in SketchUp then rendered in KeyShot. This was a project to design furniture which adapts as a child ages. The Zippo and Parker pens were both modelled and assembled in SolidWorks as briefs to produce a realistic looking object constructed of multiple parts (the Zippo had 20 and the pen had 10). Both were then rendered using KeyShot Finally, the torches were done outside of University as a practice in the use of creating knurl patterns, threads and using the loft feature.

This page shows two examples of my degree course year two modelling briefs. The first is a scale model of a lego man at 3x its original size. We began by making technical drawings, then modelling the lego man from jelutong, MDF and pink foam. To create each individual part of the lego man meant using a variety of modelling techniques and workshop equipment. The second was for a brief titled “non-lit forms. The aim of this brief was to sketch and model something that looks as though it has electronic function, without the purpose of it being obvious. This was achieved by adding screw holes, speaker grills and split lines.

In November 2015, I started a company called FSB Digital Ltd. with two friends. We have done this to gain business experience rather than as a full time commercial venture. We are currently developing a game to be listed on the iOS app store in the near future. My role in the company is to provide all of the creative design input. This has included drafting game screens, creating brand identities, and designing in game characters and objects. I have also been assisting with some aspects of the coding and the business and marketing.
